If you add a new bio you overwrite the old one, right? Well, if I add a new voice command that takes the old bio and glues your text at the end of it you can make longer bios.

Well, I know the theory of opening a safe. Doesn't help me a lot, does it? Can't even reach it because it's not in my home.

It's all 1:1. One "empty book" is made by combining one "empty pages" and one "bolt of cotton".

Doing the upgrade as we speak.

Folks, I think the system itself is rather finished now. There are a few bugs left, which will be fixed sooner or later, but the general idea is clear. I think I'll lower the XP you get from farming slightly, and increase the XP for some other jobs (trapping elementals comes to mind). That said, it's time to remove the Penguin, and I think I'll do that after the weekend.

So, make sure you choose your final layout of jobs now. After a few days you'll have to beg a DM to reset you.

One hint: from now on we'll ask for building materials if you want some IC building renovated or a new construction being built.

Keep this in mind, gonna take out the bird in a few hours.

good job. however there is one small thing. There should be a command which would erase for I cannot repair anything in append. It is not overwriting the old one but expanding it.

That's what you'd use "ds_j_bio" for. So...

ds_j_bio This is line one
ds_j_append This is Line two...
ds_j_append And this is line three!

Would put
Quote:
This is line one

This is Line two...

And this is line three!

in the description of an item, irrespective of what was on it before. Just use
"ds_j_bio This is just a random item." if you want to erase stuff.

Ts_, would you mind to make a FAQ for this? I guess it would be a nice addition to the manual.

*cough, some time later*

===================
1) Where do I start?
In general, you want to start by reading the main page of the job system. (LINK)

2) What is the Job System good for?
Mostly, it gives your character something to do. For example, many jobs collect resources somewhere on Amia. That gives you a new reason to explore all areas. You can then sell these resources to other players, which gives you many new role-play opportunities. Other jobs do not use resources, but require you to entertain other players, e.g., with preaching or a massage.

3) Do I have to have a job or use the job system to play on Amia?
Definitely not. The job system does not give mechanical advantages to those that use it.

4) So what do I get for doing my job?
Usually jobs result in a little bit of XP and gold. Under almost all circumstances, this will be less than what you can make by killing monster, but it's a nice alternative source of some XP once in a while. However, the general idea is that adventures make you an adventurer, not a full-time job as a tailor.

5) I've looked at the website and found a cool job. Where do I find the trainer for this job?
The job trainers are NPCs who are spread out over the entire world. In general, there is one trainer for each job on each server. However, some of the job system NPCs are where your character cannot go due to alignment or race restrictions, or maybe that area is simply to deadly for a low-level character. In that case, you can try looking on the other server. Probably the best way to find a trainer is to let your character ask around.

6) How do I change my jobs?
Jobs are meant to be permanent, but if you really messed up, you can try to find a helpful DM. (WHAT'S THE STATUS OF THE PENGUIN?)

7) What are all those entries in the Matrix on the job system web page?
The long table tells you how to make an item, and also the category the items belong to. A line might look like this:
428, Walnuts, Orcharder, Orchard, --- , ---, Ingredients, 31 GP.
From left to right: This is line 428 in the table, it tells you how to produce Walnuts. The job involved is Orcharder. You have to use some object "Orchard" (more specific, a Walnut tree in this case) to obtain 1 Walnut. Walnuts belong to the Ingredients category, so you can sell them to Ingredients Traders for about 31 GP.

A more complicated line could look like this:
40, Bench, Carpenter, Carpenter's Workbench, Pine Planks, Ash Planks, Furniture, 204 GP.
This tells us that 1 Bench can be made by a Carpenter by putting 1 Pine Planks and 1 Ash Planks into some object "Carpenter's Workbench" in the game. The resulting Bench belongs to the Furniture category, which means that it can be sold to a Furniture Merchant NPC. The value of the Bench would be about 204 gold pieces.

It's really not as complicated when you try it in the game. Just click on something that belongs to your job or bring the right ingredients to the right place and put them in the right object.

8) I know that I can sell Books to the Book Merchant NPC, and Ingredients to the Ingredients Merchant NPC and so on. Is there any other way to sell my items?
Yes. You are always encouraged to barter your items to other players for an agreed upon price. For some categories, players can even become traders. For example, all items in the "Metal" category can be sold to players with the Metal Trader job, almost as if they were NPCs. The player traders can also buy the metal to sell them to other players that refine metal.
Not all trader jobs are available, though. Furniture Trader, for example, cannot be taken as a player. (It's not in the list of available jobs.)
Lastly, you can always sell your items to regular shops, but they will pay you just 1 gold for your items that could be worth much more, so that is only slightly better than putting them in trash barrels.

9) I need some resources for my job but cannot make them myself. What do I do?
First of all, it is hardly a good idea to take rank 1 in some job because you want to make all ingredients yourself. Instead you should buy supplies from other players. Someone with a higher rank can produce what you need much quicker, and again, you get to interact with other people! The PC Notice forum contains the "Amian Services Directory" which might help you to find a supplier. You can also make a new post there.

10) I don't understand what I am supposed to do for my job. Help please?
If the job description on the job system web page does not explain things fully to you, you can ask for help in the General Discussion forum. Searching for the name of your job might already bring up some solution, too.

11) Where can I report a bug or make suggestions?
The Things to Change forum contains threads for job system bugs and suggestions.

===================

Any good? I had a hard time coming up with things that are not too redundant. The delay is totally not related to the fact that I'm lazy.

Regards,
Ts

Also check the object you use to process your resources (e.g. Scribe's Desk, Carpenter's Workbench) for instructions on how to use them.

Trying to do my due diligence on the Jobs thing... the FAQ helped above but the link to the Jobs description page is broken and I can't find the "sidebar" discussion....

Can we just make a "JOBS" posting area that goes along with Lore etc with stickies that describe the key points?

I'm finding more and more players using this as part of their characters and reasons to explore together. I think it's a great aspect of the game that should find more and more integration into RP

I have a couple questions about the Job Ranks.

1) Here's a quote from the Job System summary:

Quote:
Standard Roll

The standard roll in the Job System is simple: You roll a d100 and check if is is below 30 + 20 times the rank of the job involved. If you get a success you can roll again to see if you get bonus XP. This is once again a d100 but now against 10 times the rank of the job involved. Many resources and converters can be used with a 10% success rate if you don't have ranks in their related jobs. This results in the following table.
Rank Chance on success Chance on bonus
0 10% 0%
1 50% 10%
2 70% 20%
3 90% 30%

Wouldn't this mean that with 0 Ranks, the chance of success would be 30% (30+20x0 ranks), not 10% as listed in the table? (Sorry the table's all squeezed together, that's the way it copied.)

It makes it look like taking 1 Rank in a job is 40% better than having 0 Ranks (50% chance vs 10%). But if the chance is based on the given formula, 1 Rank is only 20% better than 0 Ranks. I'm confused. I would make a difference to me as to how I spent Ranks since it's 3 points to get that first Rank.

2) Another quote:

Quote:
Job Points

Every character gets 3 job points on character creation and then 1 per character level. This is not influenced by ECL (Effective Character Level), you simply use the levels you see on your character sheet. The maximum amount of job points you'll ever get is 30. This means that ECL has no effect on the job system at all

Wouldn't that mean a PC with 30 levels would have 32 points? (3 at 1st level and 1 for each 29 additional levels): 3+29=32.

And how is this not affected by ECL? It seems like a PC with ECL penalties from a subrace would end up with fewer Job Ranks since it has fewer levels. I'm confused.

edit: typos.

The first bit is likely a remnant from when it was introduced. I think it originally was 30% for no ranks, and got tweaked to be 10% with no ranks. Could be wrong though.

Either way, it's 10% chance with no ranks, and teh chart is correct for the rest as well. Ignore the formula.

For the second bit, it specifically says your answer right there. The maximum amount of job points you'll ever get is 30. As in, if there was no cap, yes a level 30 PC would end up with 32, but there *is* a cap, and teh cap is 30. The cap is there so that PCs with an ECL don't get shafted. Equally, PCs with an ECL don't benefit by "seeming" like a level 2 when they are level 1, because the job system ignore ECL, and goes by actual level, so ECL but actual level 1, is treated as a level 1.

So on creation you have 3 points. when you take level 2, you get a point, and have 4. When you take level 3, you get a point, and have 5. Etc until level 28, where you have 30 job points. When you take level 29, you do NOT get another point and have 31, because the cap is 30, and you already hit it. Thus, ECL does not count, because the highest ECL is +2, which would limit you to level 28, which is where you get your 30th and last job point.

Thank you for clearing that up. So it's definitely worth it to take 1 Rank in a job you want to do very often.

And I understand the 30 point cap now. Thanks.

I finally understand the matrix after reading this! ...can I ask a couple questions, though?

Is the jewelry that a goldsmith makes actually wearable? Does it do anything/have properties, etc.? I didn't see that it was useable for other crafts, and I knew there was a gem trader but didn't see a jewelry one per say.
