Running on your own towards a group of monsters can earn you several unfriendly Attacks of Opportunity, and if you're the squishiest and worst-armoured party member, you can and will get into trouble that you can't handle, meaning you have to run around like you're in a Benny Hill chase scene with other party members chasing the things that are chasing you and getting attacked in turn by anything that isn't pinned down in melee.
Please don't do this.
Wait until the monsters have started moving towards the people with heavy armour and lots of hitpoints, and then start attacking. By the time they realise (if they even realise) that the squishy party member is doing scads more damage than the tank, it's probably too late for them to scathe you and if they do switch targets they can incur more attacks of opportunity.
You will save everyone a lot of raise scrolls and yourself a heap of potions/healkits if you take a bit better care of your squishy bum.

Also, if for any reason you need to run away from monsters...
1. Do your best to stay close to your other party members. - This gives them a chance to attack the monsters chasing you. If you run too far away, they can't help you.
2. DO NOT run forwards through the map. - If you have to run, run the way you came. This way you will not spawn more monsters to kill you.
Both points are especially important for Yuan-ti.

Please also do not join a party, and then follow them around not doing anything. at all. apart from possibly the occasional heal kit which most can do them selves. Leeches stopped being used in most medicine most time ago.

Really depends on how much they use that Heal Kit. My Salandran refuses to fight, but when you have 100HP per heal kit ...

My favorite is probably when I watched Al'Tustra and Yossarin taking on the Snowbeast, during which when the aggro went onto Yoss he then, "Ran in terrified circles." But with Yoss-emote style.

Much as it's more efficient for a Cleric to be a frontliner and a mage to spam disables and debuffs, I'm happy enough for them to sit in GS as long as I've got half their spellbook sitting at the top of my screen.

Yes, and her level 5-9 spells are filled (when not with buffs) with "heal to full health"
But anyway, if you're squishy and fighting, wait for the fighters, and if you're squishy and not fighting definitely try to avoid the monster's attention and help in other ways.

As am I, I'm not complaining about that sort of thing, as I do that myself. I mean people joining a party, going invis/GS/HiPS, then not doing anything at all. or running along and giggling or whatever.

I have a suit of Mythaled gear that gives me full intelligence, and +50 to heal, so often when I'm in a party I put that on, along with max heal skill and act as a very effective healer (nearly 100 HP a kit, is a lot cheaper for your warriors, and they will thank you), as well as a debuffer, I find direct damage spells do very little in higher level areas, but disabling spell still work fairly effective. Blind, confusion, fear, even a darkness/ultravision combo, they all work much better then rolling the dice with a death spell for a few characters, (As fun as it is ). Also, Buff your teammates with the basics: Improved Invisibility, GMW, Flame Weapon, mind blank and Haste, any others are just fluff (Stoneskin is not that good, improved invisibility over stoneskin any day).
I often stay visible, since I have tumble points, AoO aren't that much trouble, and your mage buffs should protect you from a few blows before you bite the dust.
But still learn death circles, it's the best move, that goes for all characters not just mages, if you get in over your head, run in a circle, and see how they like AoO from your teammates. As was mention, running ahead is silly, so is running far away, unless it's a situation that warrants you run and never stop running .
Offensive spells can be good, if you pick the right ones for the enemy your fighting, get to learn them by testings stuff on them.
My 5 mage cents.

The best thing is to not become an object of fascination for monsters in the first place. Not every bit of terrain lends itself to Doom Circles and even if it does, you've got to contend with the odd bit of lag, ground decorations, and maybe a protruding wall.
I'm weary of these parties that have two or more capable frontliners, and yet the rest of the party insists on charging ahead of them. In a situation like that, it sucks to be any kind of frontline fighter carrying a great big heavy shield shield around since you're not really getting much use out of that weight on your arm.

Nice, can your character help at all though? i havent locked my keys in the car with the alarm on for quite a while
nahh im kiddin, those be handy things in a lot of area's, need more locks and more traps IMO
// additional: and more people actualy paying attention to the rogue when they say "let me go first and scout for traps" or "trap ahead" or "trap" instead of running past the trapper and seting it off in thier face.

As Yurell is so fond of saying... "This".
Normally, I address these issues in character. Depending on the character, some berating may be involved. But, in all honesty, it's an attempt to put some 'tough love' into things.
*Fighter sets trap off. Takes 20 Negative Energy damage*
Rogue: "Didn't feel so great, eh? Hang back. I'm on point. I know how to deal with this stuff an' all."
*Fighter does it again*
Rogue: "...Seriously. Hang back."
*Fighter does it again, dies.*
*Rogue sighs, produces and reads a scroll of Raise Dead*
Rogue: "Look- Next time, I won't bring you back from the Fugue. You're being a liability and costing me money."
*Fighter learns his lesson (Finally), and allows the rogue to take point.*

That works when the party is actually willing to stay at the speed of plot. Which, in the case of many flung-together groups, doesn't happen often.
Yeah, I know, it only happens if you want it to, but in the cases where you do and the four or five others just want to smash in monster brains, go figure.

Shadowdancers: You are worse than useless if you use HiPS as part of your normal party tactics.
A) When you go HiPS, the mobs will just swarm everyone else.
2) When you pop out of HiPS, people with old or fussy computers will get a lagspike and sometimes a full crash.
d) The round you spent going back into combat mode does zero Sneak Attack damage.
Fifthly) Parties who don't understand how much of a liability you are will go to more dangerous places on the assumption you will help, since you've boasted of being able to solo them.
Solution: Get a second gearset that is totally indifferent to Hide/MS and instead goes for full AC, STR, DR and Regen. Wear that when you're in a party and operate like a flanker Rogue. Unbind the Stealth key if you have to.
Competent Shadowdancers don't HiPS in party. Rubbish ones do.
Rubbish Shadowdancers don't get invited to my parties. I have lied many times and said we were full, when in actual fact we were only summons-full, and sometimes not even that. This isn't an apology; I was acting for the benefit of my partymates, I did the right thing and will likely do it again in the future.

That's not so bad; once they're out of stealth they're in battle fulltime and drawing aggro.
That said, what I find works best is to bowl into the spawn side by side; the tanks fights anything they want, and you backstab anything going for them.
You're in a funny position as a DEX/Sneaker. On one hand you're actually better at tanking than the guy who's normally called the tank, because you've got more AC than a fullplater. On the other, you need things to aggro the tank or else you do sod all damage.
Stealth's pretty hard to make work for your party in PvM, casters excepted. From time to time I'll slink up to the caster(and the Barbarian Boss with his annoying Terrifying Rage) to nobble him superfast, but that's about it.

In my experience as an SD, you want tanks at the front, sneakers in the middle, and casters/archers at the back. I do try and get my strength up (with bracers of might/belt of frost giant strength) but try and keep my dex enhancement bonus at +12 too, since you need that for weapon finesse and AC.
And yeah, only HiPsing if you have lots of monsters slapping you (which won't happen if tanks lead).

I believe he is referring t people who don't contribute at all, as opposed to those that try but can't make much of an impact.

Well, expecting people to carry around dozens of gearsets to minmax their characters is something I'd expect to see on a PvP server, not a rp one.

I expect a smart adventurer to be equipped for whatever known situation they might expect. It's called being prepared, ICly.
PvP/RP server has nothing to do with it.
I don't think anyone asked for dozens of gearsets.
I know I have several gear-sets on several of my wizards.
Usually a 'RP' oriented one, and a 'Combat' oriented one.
And on one I have a 'PvP' 'PvM' and 'Solo PvM' gearset.

I agree with that, but a lot of people do it - so long as they don't expect me to have different gearsets, we're fine.
Edit: By this, I am referring to a complete change of gear (well, three or more items) that changes depending on hunting ground, as opposed to RP set, Fighting set, or one or two items you have just in case you are fighting these creatures.

I don't mind at all even if all 5 of my party are 'leachers' or bad players, as long as they try and make it entertaining. Though I too get annoyed how a bad SD could sometimes screw over a party with their style. Then they'd be all cocky in PvPs because they think they're untouchable? Bad form.
And getting back on topic about squishy players.
When you're being suddenly nomnomnom-ed by monsters, don't freeze on your spot and heal kit yourself! Run instead. Run and get your party members free attacks! Learn to orbit and love it.
Partying with squishy players but know how to orbit my dwarf for free attacks of opportunities are more than welcome to my party.

It isn't fun when people keep dying every other spawn, in which case I'm much inclined to believe that it's time to stop the monster-slaying and time to release the gigglehugs.

QFE
I enjoy everyone that wants to come and have a blast in a party.
'Leech' or not. There's no such as leeching, unless someone is afk, imo.
If someone is actively even RPing along while adventuring, say as a bard singing for example, and horrible in combat..I couldn't care less.
Or if they're a pure RP stat build, I don't care as a player. ICly it may be a different matter, some of my PCs might complain...but I'm fine with it ooc. People play to have fun, and that is how it should be.
Adventuring is an IC activity.
Keeping in mind my first post in this thread was specifying a 'Smart adventurer'. There's plenty of PC's with plenty of levels of intelligence, experience, wisdom and such. Being unprepared, and having to get by on wits alone make the adventuring more dangerous, and more real, more fun.
I prefer to leave the discussion of Player skill, and insulting players in general out of any topic.

It's fun being the cleric sometimes. You can laugh at the squishy guy running around in circles followed by the thing trying to kill them... followed by the weaponmaster who supposedly has enough intelligence to get improved knockdown which you'd think they wouldnt run in circles, they's simply cut corners.

If your character is a rampage-carnage-blood-lusty barbarian, not running ahead before everyone else and getting killed too many times a day IS A SIN! Ya will go to Hell, I say!

Not all barbarians are stupid you know. They just have anger issues.

I've had a number of shifters before that I'd literally have to raise every mob. And I didn't mind one bit, didn't even asked her to pay me for the raise scrolls because she really tried and was bloody funny to have.
Maybe I do it because I too once was a newbie, my first character was a clueless recommended fighter. I died _a lot_, but my party didn't mind back then. I sure as hell wouldn't mind now.

Ditto for Ruce's SD post. How many times do you have to lose this argument before you give up on it? You started off this time by not even knowing the difference between 'two' and 'dozens' let alone gear'n'tactics versus build.

My Barb's always running ahead if his Rage hasn't run out before he's killed everything. So far he's got away with it except in the Manor. Kids, y'know.

"We just prefer to solve our problems with violence. ANY PROBLEMS!?!"
And hey, a SD jumping behind a mage foe and stabbing at him, hiding when he turns around and prepares to unleash a spell on them, just to come out when he is about to unleash spells on the party again is useful.

I don't think this was ever a topic that questioned anyones build (Until it got brought up by someone) I've seen some pretty useful tips for some classes to take to heart and use to help themselves contribute to the party as best they can.
Any build, no matter how "bad", how much of a "RP" build it is, etc., can contribute to a group if they are more mindful of how they can do so and don't kid themselves about what they can do.
I've never told someone to GTFO, aside from one shadowdancer who kept running ahead of the group while we would attempt to RP and such, grabbing agression of every mob in a spawn, then HIPS, letting them lose on your teamates, I died a few times, the archer died a few times, we told him IC to stop doing it, OOC to stop doing it, then finally, got fed up and removed him.
There isn't much wrong with HIPS in an encounter, just don't run around head first into mobs ahead of the tank, then letting mobs randomly drop down on your team.
If your bard is bad in combat, stay out of combat. If your wizard has Low AC and HP (Which he probably does) hang back, and wait a bit before you fireball something and tick them off. If your warrior needs mind protection and a haste, wait a bit for you mage to buff you before running ahead. If you rogue has low AC, wait till someone with high AC engages them before running in to a situation you should know you can't handle and know that you'll have to escape from, putting everyone else in danger. You don't need to gear up your character with stuff, just take a few tips from some of the posts, and try to play a bit smarter.
I'd love to travel with a bard who did the play-by-play of a fight, a wizard that blew himself up once or twice, a barbarian that decided walking backwards into battle was a good idea, etc.
Everyone makes mistakes as well, and those can be laughed off too, but it's better to be an asset in some way to a party, then a liability.

What's "aggro" in NWN terms and what are "doom circles"?
You people speak in tongues.
