To the amian populace,

Hello new and old players, over amia’s life span there have been many factions come and go. Some have stood the test of time some have slowly slipped into inactiveness, while some have remained open and public others have been secretive selective of their members. One of these factions is the Sharrans, as an ongoing faction that at times has been so secretive not even the DM team have known of us at times in our existance, we have come to realise that not all of the player base knows of our existence.

This is a public statement that we are here and we are as always recruiting and acting among you. Any players new or old who are interested in joining our ranks should Pm DM khylaria and your application will debated within the Sharran forums by all members of the cell.

That being said any players who consider joining the Sharran cell should know we are unlike the majority of factions that the player base knows of. We take pride in our achievements, we take pride in secrecy as such to reduce meta gaming and infiltration of our ranks we require an OOC agreement to be made. This agreement consists of the perma death of your character if they are ever found to be betraying the faction.

This is an ongoing system that has worked for a few years now for the sharrans, it will not change. Lastly, over the years we have come to know the player base very well, some of you will have a reputation for meta game, some of you will in our eyes not be suited for the faction, others might play in a style that is not suited for the Sharran Cell, this is just a small list of reasons as to why some of you will be rejected

Serious applications only please, if you have any questions post away there will come a response at some point.

Disclaimer: The poster is in no way endorsing, or affiliated with this faction! I am just an innocent chicken!

Color me intrigued. The only problem being, I don't know what the Sharrans are (although I gather that is good in the fact that their very successful at being secret). Not knowing who they are, nor would any of my characters, I haven't a clue as to whether or not any of my pc's would fit. :? But I am intrigued, and I love the perma-death, or potential of perma-death idea.

...Just because I've known it's exsisted almost since I joined Amia doesn't mean its not secret!

I meant it in the sense of; "We do secret things but we don't go to the square and scream 'Hahahahah we did X!' "

Bah, of course, I didn't make that particular connection for some reason  .Anyways, sounds like a whole lot of fun. Perhaps one day I'll come up with a character that would fit with the Sharrans. Until then, happy gaming.

Quote:
Faerunians, as a whole, generally fear and respect Shar as a Greater Deity. Sharran clergy in the FR setting are the ones who seek out people who've suffered losses great and small. They sow seeds of retribution in the unwary hearts and minds of commoners and nobles alike, and are often sough out by those seeking revenge for a slight, however great or small. Lay worshipers keep an eye out for others who might be susceptible to conversion or manipulation in such cases. There are even a couple of cities where Sharrans can be found quite easily, just by asking around, and publicly at that.

Quote:
How common are Priests of Shar?

Depending on the fearun city, depends on how common. However on amia they are few and far between, we often see other sharran PC's on amia who are open about there beliefs. These players are not part of our sharran cell.

This Sharran cell does not accept clergy straight into the ranks, all players who join start from the bottom up. Same oppertunities for everyone and perhaps in time players who started at the bottom can be at the top.

Are the Sharrans in league with the Knights Templar, is it true they caused the Tunguska incident and would the Cell like to comment on the irregular financial practises under the previous treasurer as revealed in this years financial year-end report?

You could submit a request via Pm, which can be sent to this account. We will let you know after your request has been looked at by the cell.

"Some time after the fall of Myth Drannor, Bast began to experiment with the darker side of pleasure and fell under the influence of Shar, Mistress of the Night. Known as the Maidens of the Forbidden Fruit, the two goddesses were strongly linked in the liturgy of the church of Shar until Bast was seen simply as an aspect of Shar known as Sharess, which could literally mean "Little Shar". The ranks of the Lustful Mistress's clergy slowly dwindled throughout the Realms as the Nightbringers spoke of her being a precursor to the despair and loss that all beings will eventually embrace. Sharess was never fully absorbed by Shar, however, and during the Time of Troubles she was released from this dark fate by Sune."

"Alignment restrictions for Sharess's clergy (particularly clerics) are weak, and a gentle slide toward evil is still often tolerated. Those priests who remain evil and seem unwilling or unable to drift back toward neutrality in their behavior are secretly entreated by agents of Shar to shift their worship to the Dark Maiden while maintaining their position within the clergy of Sharess. The Feline of Felicity seems unwilling or unable to prevent such defections at this time, rare though they may be."

"Sharess is reputed to be served by a secretive sisterhood of female werecats known as the Eyes of Evening who also pay tribute to Selûne. The aims and goals of this mysterious fellowship are unknown, although they are rumored to hunt cultists of Shar and Loviatar during nights of the full moon."

- from the Amiawiki entry on Sharess

First Rule of Harpers

Don't take Harper Scout.

Second Rule of Harpers

Pay attention to the first rule.

IDK really but Harpers seems the obvious choice.

I really don't like the RP elitism vibe this post is giving off.

I find it personally rude and maybe a little arrogant to ignore someone that RPs with you on the basis that they don't accept "perma death" or your own special rules.

I also fail to understand how opening up a call for applications to a player base you obviously find incompetent for role paying with is a good idea? To me, it seems as if you are advising your secret club and saying "Cool kids only!"

I really hate it when RP has to be neutralized or undone because feel they were metagamed or unhappy with the outcome and this faction seems to scream of this type of behavior.

I might be far off from the mark but the rampant distrust, open calls of player incompetence, and elitist tone seem to persuade me.

I am mostly concerned over this "RP Immunity" you seem to be touting by demanding non server rules to carry out RP. I would be rather angry if I started some RP and had someone message me that if we were to continue I would have to accept permanent death. I am assuming this is allowed by a Dm since they are the conduit of this message but I will at least voice my concerns.

I am posting mostly because I want my fears either confirmed or proven horribly false. I had just recently been thinking on hunting down the Sharrans or learning more about them ICly but this post changed my opinion of the faction. I hope my view is a distorted one.

It's not RP elitism. They are just going to weed out the metagamers from the people who will play this without problems. Totally within the rules!

We are sorry that this post came off this way to you, we do not deny anyone role play with our faction. However due to past experiences with regards to actual meta game we have had to adapt our style of play. Players who seek to infiltrate our ranks do so under the pretence that –if- they are ever caught they suffer one of two fates.

The reason being this faction this faith is based entirely around secrecy, if Amia was played in a more realistic setting we would be a more open faction.

But this is not the case, everyone on Amia knows all the lore on deities there secret agenda’s the true purpose, because of this we have to play in a different style as to what players may have read in FR novels.

Because of this we implemented a method we deem fit to give the player two ways out, infiltration has a high risk and substantial reward. We feel that this is a fair agreement and gives a true fear and true thought into ones actions. There have been many topics over the years of Amia’s existence of players complaining there is no fear, no respect within the community. This is our method of dealing with this issue.

This does not mean there are not other ways of looking into the sharrans, it just means that if you wish to infiltrate our ranks you do so at your own risk. This also does not mean we seek such agreements with factions who we have conflicts with, only those who wish to participate in the role play within our faction.

This has clarified things for me. I was under the impression that miscellaneous character that learned a little about the faction and confronted a faction member about it would get a "Accept permadeath or leave this RP" type tell during any confrontation. I am greatly relieved to know this is not true and look forward to any future intrigue.

Thanks for explaining it to me. I have no qualms with any requirements you do set forth. While I do sense a tinge of elitism I guess that if you provide quality RP for the masses then I can't complain much at all!

Despite saying that I wouldn't spam, I need to ask this.

Did you notice how every one of your questions/comments started with an "I", Phantom?

I'm pointing this out, because the post is in no way meant to offend you personally, but the way you responded to it seems like you took personal offence about the ways another faction wishes to handle its internal affairs, to which they have every right in the world.

Please, don't. If you don't agree with it, don't agree with it. You don't need to take part in the RP.

They surely don't mind some feedback, but perhaps it's better to take a bit less "I"-centered stance to constructive feedback, as well.

You noticed I took personal offense because I DID take personal offense. I at first thought they were going to ignore me because I wouldn't follow their own special rules, which perturbed me. I also took offense to their lack of trust since I am a opened doors policy proponent.

It isn't a big deal though. They have provided good RP for a very long time. I guess I felt like this hobby that I like, Amia, was being threatened. It is not and all is well!

I don't mind how people RP.
I don't mind draconian Faction rules.
I don't mind that you have the perma-death requirement.

Having moles is one thing, an IC mole isn't a Metagamer and I don't see the connect between the two.

I do have a issue with the phrasing of why you feel that this is necessary. I do not think it wins any friends, nor would or does it inspire me to wish to take part in this faction.

No one needs to be a lore-junkie IC to know: Shar = baaaad and secretive.

I have a question for you, I'd be quite curious to see how as a faction you would deal with a situation:

Someone inside the faction set another PC up and successfully framed them for 'betraying' the organization. Would you invoke your Perma-death clause on that case?

What is the correct way to look at it, then? Or what we're suppose to know about Shar 'ICly' from a PC with decent lore then? Or 'low lore'.

I don't have a copy of the PHB, nor extensive working knowledge of all things D&D. Only what my main character has heard from others IC.

I'm honestly asking, because I don't know, and I'd like to. I'm not trying to be a smart-ass.

Edit: added some stuff

Speaking of "what Sharrans are known for".....not to sidetrack from your Shadow Weave topic, but what the Amian populace (PCs) think of Sharrans differs -greatly- from what the general Faerunian populace thinks of Sharrans. Both as a player, and a DM, I would like to see the two viewpoints come closer together than what they are now.

Amians characters, on the other hand, seem to instinctively "know" all about Shar and her secret agenda to revert everything back into oblivion, when in reality, not even all of her (FR) followers really understand even that wide-ranging ideal.

Shar is a goddess who essentially embodies the worst nightmare imaginable to the common folk of Faerun. They grow up hearing stories about your sins coming back on you, of revenge being taken for the merest slight, and are told to treat others as they would be treated....or else bad things will come back on you. All this they attribute to several deities, but the most widely known one is Shar. As such, the majority of the gods-fearing populace of Abeir-Toril pay at least lip-service to Shar to appease her, and keep from being sought out for revenge.

Ooooh. Thanks!

So sort of like.. 'Dude thats bad karma!', Instead is: "Shar's gonna get you for that!'

I suppose, this is the down-side of not having enough lore and people just going and reading the Forgotten Realms Wiki, or googling it, such 'not suppose to be known' info is known. As it only takes one person to say such things ICly, and it be passed around..

As often in the case of these things, its normally as -misunderstanding- or lack of information that lies at the root of these things, IMO.

It makes the point much clearer as to why people playing for the faction would be bummed at the difference. For some people NWN or Baldur's gate, or planescape torment summates their whole experience with D&D lore. I was/am one of those people that started with those games and am picking up on the lore years later, there's just so ..much to learn.

My own faction has several methods of protecting us against metagamers.

Firstly, the initiation ceremony includes self-sacrifice with the IC raise being offered by Ghaunadaur's divine spells...meaning, you'd have to be a true believer for it to work or you stay dead.

Secondly, our leadership position has a permadeath clause in it. Any leader taking on the role, knows that with a legitimate coup d'etat from a priest within the House/Sect, they voluntarily perma their PC. That's the risk you take when you become leader of the faction. Its a High Risk position. OOC though, the new leader needs to be the right person for the job and in a position with a majority of support by the faction behind him or her.

The rules are in place to stop metagaming and infiltration but also to give legitimate IC methods of Succession. The main method to infiltrate the faction is via turning one of our own members a double agent. To do that, you really have to -want- a long term RP. The initiation ceremony just prevents opportunist destructive RP which, sadly, I've experienced in the past with other metagamers when I've run a faction before.

The Nightshadows also have a permadeath clause. Any clause should really be in place to give legit opportunities for RP but also make you really put some effort in if you really want X event to happen.

I'm not sure, but I don't think raise dead work like that. I think it's the raisee, not the raiseer, who will gain insight about the patron deity and aligbment of the raiser and can refuse to be raised on those grounds. However, if he/she accepts, he will not carry with him/her that information back into life.

Nobody who is alive knows this either. So you can't go, "Well, he raised me, that means that my dead self approves of him; he can't be all that bad" either.

I think.

That's correct, if you'd've cited your sources you'd know but it is correct, having had a cursory glance at a few older threads this was the defined legit, DM team approved answer.

As for metagamers, I just avoid them. If I have to RP with one, I give them the absolute minimum of information.

Yup we've kind of changed it to suit the lore then. Basically, Ghaunadaur will bring you back if you're willing...err...after 5 RL minutes....XD

That ... shady raise by the god's will sounds like a way to metagame people. I always find it ironic that to avoid metagamers, most factions metagame. It is a catch 22 I'd wager.

If they've seen you, they know your name, everything about you that's stated in your description. o_o; Metagamers aren't metagaming! Their characters are all just psychic. Really.
