Quote:
Sitreere tuano; dric rudanto. Sithi murant, la mento ultair soba tua mo rudo. “A horse is tall and strong; a pony is short and nimble. Each is content with her lot, and neither feels the need to remind the other which is the taller or the shorter.” This saying is a reminder that different kinds of folk have different capabilities, and a warning against braggarts and folks who jeer. A horse knows it's taller than a pony, and a pony that it's smaller than a horse; each is the right size for what it is.

Here's a halfling phrase. Make your own questins and answer them.
Here's an examle:

"Does this mean that general hin wisdom lead hin characters to behave uncaring about height issues?"

In my view, yes. "Taller" is a term my halflings seldom use. In conversation Johanna, for example, might nod in agreement at a friend's view on a 'taller' after the term has been used. But rarely does she say it herself. Though she has when angered.

Halflings, for me, are welcoming and feel unchallenged/unintimidated by taller folk, but don't often height as a basis for anything. "Small folk are better" is nothing you'd hear.

Halflings generally shrug and smile when being referred to as "halfling". And halflings are generally more accepting to other (non-evil specific) races.

I totally agree. Willow doesn't say or use the word "taller" and I don't think she ever has, maybe once or twice but none that I can remember. She doesn't hold height against anyone. She doesn't think Hin are better than Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes or anyone else. She has experienced racism against herself for being short on many many occasions, even by her own people at the grove but she rarely strikes back with racism of her own unless pushed so far that she's in a fit of rage.

Benki o the other hand, being kind of Xenophobic because he's a Ghostwise, he does hold race against people. He calls the races by their name though. He will say "tall folk" but not "taller", as it just sounds a bit harsh and it's not meant that way.

I have to be honest in saying I don't like how it's popular among Amia Hin to use the term "Taller" and the general racism that seems to go along with it. Hin are generally loving and excepting not a bunch of short little bigot jerks. That's not to say there aren't any, just that there seems to be -too- many on Amia.

Anyway, those are my two cents for you this week ;)

This is generally my view too. It's something I'd comment on in-game in-character more but I always feel that it's not really my right to dictate how other people play their character.

Though at teh same time, if you're role playing, you're meant to play the role that you've chosen. In this case, a halfling. The less you play the role of a halfling, the less you are role playing. But, maybe that's too restrictive a policy. I dunno.

rollplaying just means you are playing a roll, you make him up.
would you yell at the people who made up Drizzt Do'Urden because he is playing his race wrong?

I dont view race as having much effect on how you should play a roll as much as a class would.

This, to me, is saying two opposing things.

It's like saying "I'm playing a halfling that's 10 ft tall"
Or saying "I have a Fighter that's never wielded a weapon and has always remained a pacifist"

We create limits to justify our choice and choices to come. The above thing I have mentioned is a cultural point that being a halfling one might know off-by-heart. A wisdom deep in halfling up-bringing. I'm not saying every halfling has to conform to a rigid set of opinions or behaviors. However, when everyone plays the exception, the original outlook of a race/class is lost and contradictory to what is accepted. If things reach that point, it must be addressed to see why, and if it is justified.

I know that some new players of halflings (for example) will use other players as a point of reference as what is acceptable behaviour. This continues a bad practice.

Society can also work in this way, so you might argue that these are just fitting in to what sort of feel is in Bendir Dale, and is a justified way for your halfling to behave. But it may very likely contradict teh background of their fresh character.

the playing a halfling that's 10 ft tall is a joke. personality does not effect hight

but the Fighter that's never wielded a weapon and has always remained a pacifist is 100% fine IC, you could train in all defence stoping both attackers for hurting eachother, your a wall that blocks conflict so they have to work it out.

so dont use a sword and sheild use a sheild(zero damage weapon maybe) and sheild, knockdown to subdue people,Disarm,Expertise you get the idea.

A pacifist would refuse to fight. A fighter for defence is not a pacifist. That is a defender.

A pacifist would not be trained in martial weapons. A fighter would.
A pacifist wouldn't have trained to get the d10 hit points per level. A fighter does. (on the note of HP. A defender might try to improve their CON. Though a pacifist wouldn't need to)
A pacifist would not get +1 BAB at level 1 like a Fighter does.

Using a shield can be got from shield proficiencey at level 1. This can be got by ANY race, ANY class as a feat choice in level 1 or multiple of 3.
The saves growth of a fighter is developed by fighting. Something a pacifist never does.

Pacifism "the opposition to war or violence as a means of settling disputes or gaining advantage"
Violence "the expression of physical force against self or other, compelling action against one's will on pain of being hurt"

SephiraAndy wrote:

trying to just throw out class mechanics does not mean anything, because NWN is flawed on alot of levels the idea of heavy armor making people hit you less offen is stupid its not hard to hit someone, the level 1 goblins should hit a big giant almost every attack but in NWN it wont.

SephiraAndy wrote:

knowing how to use a weapon does not mean you use it, I dont need to train with a mace to know I hit you with it.

this also means nothing because its more of how strong your body is, Gandhi was attacked by people but lived, just because you might not hit people does not mean they dont hit you, offen it just makes them more pissed and they hit you harder.

all things can have a diffrent roll, saves like fort fighters have, can be used for fighting off a sickness like the severe malaria attack Gandhi had.

I disagree loads. I will refrain from arguing such a matter further in this thread because it has flown off topic.

A large number of posters are spread through a variety of means - some were quite obviously deposited through portal in Amia forest, other apparently dropped from the sky, regardless of location, they all bear the same message:

A very well drawn sketch of Bella, obviously done by a practised hand, and probably quite expensive, since around the edges it becomes clear that it was actually printed. Beneath the chained girl, her face covered in tears, is a sentence in arching letters:
"Lyle, where are you?"
The face on the girl seems to almost weep these words, the artist having caught the horror of the scene almost perfectly.
The Hin is manacled by her hands and feet, naked except for a raged blanket that still leaves her exposed, her filthy face and body making just as larger change to the usual Belladonna as her missing ponytail.

Izzy is mentioned to have left the gates with a large pack on her back. She had let a guard know she was going to be a few days possibly weeks away, as she is going to experiment with magic that isn't ment for the Dale or around it, and that she will return after her practice and mastery of the said magic is complete.

The wizard poster is taken down and a letter is sent to Tommi. Lyle, of course, seems quite on edge.

Sasha if she can seems to take a kindred spirit to little Mezzu and would pad over to her and whilst not getting to close, would stare in understanding to her and nod her head slowly as she growls low but not in a threatening manner.

Willow sees Little Mezzu and begins to get the idea that Mezzu might be missing. Willow walks over and tries to speak with her through the "speak with animals" spell, asking her where Mezzu is, and also tries to convince her to eat.

She would also be seen trying to convince Sasha to eat, using the same spell.

A small candle flickers at the base of Urogalan's idol, set upon a saucer. There is no name, no description, no explanation. Though no one else would know beyond the eight who attended, this small candle was lit in the memory of a poor and lost soul. At least they could take comfort in that their kin was in the safety of He Who Must Be.

When asked, Ritty would reply that it was an unknown hin.

She wasn’t here, wasn’t there, wasn’t anywhere insofar as Serena could tell from within the strange never-never land of the portal wand’s teleportation field. She couldn’t see or hear anything, save a sense of dizzying velocity.

Serena Voi felt herself, once again, rush back together like a puzzle with a million pieces. She felt disoriented, nauseated…and angry.

A quick look around was sufficient to ascertain that she had made it safely back to Bendir Dale, and the man’s, next to her, comment was proof enough.

“You’re still not used to it, are you?” Jayek asked.

She didn’t answer him. Serena quickly went on with her usual business: sell the items she had found to Jayek, get out of town ASAP, and hopefully not meet with anyone.

Serena made a quick dash to the door, only to come to a skidding halt at the sight of the Dire Wolf lying near the windmill. Startled, she grabbed her sword's handle and looked around for any signs of its owner.

Nothing.

The Halfling looked back down at the Dire Wolf. For some reason, it looked oddly familiar...
Mezzu? No. Mezzu never leave friends behind. Mezzu always take this friend with him, she told herself.

She paused, letting the last sentence resonate in her mind. She remembered something else Mezzu had told her...something that bothered her and never understood.

Serena took one last look at the Dire Wolf before darting out the gate.

The gusting wind at the peak of the Skull Crags whipped violently around the small figure which was knelt down in the snow in the small courtyard there. Suzy's ponytail, icy with snow and sleet, thrashed around her face, whipping her skin like cold needles. Her trusted sword, Azura, lay in the snow before her, the handle stained with blood. Her helmet lay half sunk in a snowbank to her left.

"What is this coming to?"

Her eyes opened with some effort, breaking through the thin layer of ice which had formed over her lashes. She stared down at her hands, turned upward toward the sky, and then down to the small crimson pools which had collected in the snow beneath them. Her palms were shredded and broken, warm blood soaking into the fabric of her torn gloves and dripping into the snow. The cold of the environment stung them harshly. Her gaze drifted along her torn arms and torso, which bore poorly healed and badly scarred wounds from scythe and claw. Her armor was pierced and damaged, her padding and leggings ripped and torn, exposing more of her to the harsh cold.

"I'm supposed to be helping people, not killing them. Not taking innocent lives..."

She stared down at her bloodied hands and at the crimson pools in the snow beneath them. Blood of innocents, on her hands. It was her fault...

She carefully began to bandage her hands, and her other injuries.

"I won't wash my hands of it. Things aren't over yet. The Dale needs leaders and strong hands, not drama queens and cowards. One way or the other, those drow -will- pay the price for this."

She stood slowly, lifting her sword from its snowy bed and sliding it back into its sheath. She collected her helmet, staring into its blank eyes a moment before fitting it onto her head.

"Belladonna -will- be rescued. If I'm not the one to do it, then I'm damn sure gonna be one to help."

"No more innocents will die because of me..."

The cell door bangs open and dirty light floods into Bella’s cell. The mage steps into it with a brisk step and hauling the prone halfling to her feet and then up into his arms, caring little for her comfort.
Before she has any idea of what is happening the chain is taken from the wall brackets and into the mages hands as with a wave of his wand he disappears into a portal.

The images shift to reveal an icy plain barren and devoid of human life. There is another halfling there, standing resplendent in merry and flowing red material, with a twinkle in her voice when she speaks so pleasant on the ears. Another figure is there also, that of a drow female standing with bow ready as if they had both been waiting for the mage to return.

Their voices are obscured by the howling of the wind, carried away on its harsh course for none other to hear than those standing there.
The mage drops the bundle to the ground and hands the chain to the other drow woman. The halfling almost immediately pulls out a cloak to wrap around the naked form with a deep frown on her face. She takes a large bag from within another and passes it to the drow woman as she in turn passes the gold chain, still attached to the collar around the slave.

The bundle looks up, its confused expression clear as it listens to what the taller woman tells her. She shakes her head violently and crawls towards her again her moth opening as if she were screaming. The halfling dressed in red pulls out a portal wand and pulls the captive along into its embrace. The last thing she sees is of the taller woman reaching forward as if to grab her back.

Soon after the halflings disappear the two drow depart to leave only the howling off the wind and the snow beginning to slowly cover the footsteps and markings where they had stood.

A short while later two halfings appear at the outside entrance to Salandra, one dressed in red, the other wrapped in a cloak of blue and being led by a chain. A third joins them briefly who the captive shies away from as she cries for her lost mistress.
The third halfling obviously a mature halfling male, stops and talks to them both for a while but only seems to make the captive more distressed. He soon departs.

Eventually she is led inside the recovery wing of the temple and into the care of the Salandrans and one Doctor Franklin Stein (I did not choose the name).

Jhaelryna stands on the mountain peak at Brogendestein, the wind whistling around her, making her loincloth, marked with the Eight Tenets of Lloth, whip up like a flag, but she didn't mind.
She realised long before that the hin were not likely to give the price she asked, or even the compromise she made, so offloading the hin could only end one of two ways - violence or profit.

One and one half million, Maelthra. I trust that you are capable of obtaining that sum? Expensive for a slave, but these half-people obviously care for her for some reason ... likely she's a consort of their male leader. A snort accompanied that idea, but the male bowed and departed anyway and, with the passing of a bell Jhae had made her way to the frozen peak.

As a soft, shimmering pillar of blue light appears before her she raises her hand, a prayer to Lloth on her lips and a death spell ready to be set off at a moments notice. As the drow and halfling appear Jhae glances between the two, having fully expected not to be trusted enough for the exchange to be handled remotely.

As the halfling nods, Jhae speaks. "Greetings. We shall be travelling to another region before making any form of arrangement.
You are prepared to step through a portal? "

As the halfling agrees Jhae opens a new portal, arcane runes appearing upon the ground as the they are all transited to a new location, somewhat darker and colder, the negative energy almost malodorous in the air, smothered by the stench of decay.

The male speaks once they are through the portal "The terms are five million common weight." Jhaelryna stiffens at this, surprise hidden entirely by her helm.

After a few more moments of discussion between the three, the mage departs and soon returns, unceremoniously dropping a bundle wrapped in a filthy blanket upon the ground, a chain leading from a collar around its neck to the mage's wrist, it's contents ... a bound hin.

"There she is. For the agreed price, you gain ownership of the girl. "

The little halfling looks up, shivering in the cold. "Eh... Ehmtua?" She asks, confused by the sudden change. Immediately Prescia covers her with a cloak and addresses Jhae.
"May I also ask for assurance of our safety in the future? "

"Assurances? I will not hunt down you creatures ... I was attacked, and took the opportunity that was presented. " Meanwhile, Belladonna crawls towards Jhae. "Wh...what is going on ... why is she here? Ehmtua? ... Bella'donna is a good girl" Jhae responds this by leaning down and stroking Bell's hair as if rewarding a well-behaved dog.

"Bella'donna not go back ... please."
"Shall we do the transfer of ownership then?"
Jhae bends down and whispers something to Bell, then nods. "Very well."

Bella, shivering in the snow, her teeth chattering violently, shouts "No!!! Bella'donna stay with Ehmtua .... she good girl she is." But as Jhae hands over her leash the hin prisoner's voice becomes a wretched whimper. "No !! Ehmtua ... please."

After the exchange is made and Jhae makes one last whispered promise to the slave, Belladonna is pulled towards the portal by Prescia, shouting "EHMMTUA!" With one last, calculated decision Jhae moves towards Bell, as if trying to 'rescue' her from her new captivity.

Stepping through another portal with the magus, the wasteland is left to brood as it always has in the desolate sound of the frozen wind.

In the recovery wing of the temple of Salandra a noise can be heard …

The soft sound of running footsteps drawing closer as a figure comes into view. The figure is that of a halfling female, it is obvious that she is crying the tear stains obvious on her face. She cries out a single word as she rushes for the doors “Ehmtua!!” She wearing what might almost be a cloth of gold outfit as it would seem she had been dressed to try and cheer her up. The skirt flaps wildly sending light shimmering off if it in all directions.

The pair of guards on duty there step in front of the doors, there faces cant help but soften, knowing that this is not the first time the halfling has attempted this and probably wont be the last, as they gently as they can reach out for the woman.
She shrieks and tries to duck away from them, but one manages to catch her arm and spinning her around as she gets restrained, gently, but firmly by them both.

Th nurse comes following sedately after, her face would look very sad, with moisture in her own eyes to see the halfling like that. She would nod quietly to them both as the one departs still holding Bella leading her back to her room, little more than a cell itself.
The nurse, satisfied that things are in order, shakes her head and departs once more to continue her duties.

The door shut behind her. Serena looked around at the casual, never-changing, Bendir Dale “Square”.

Well, it was always the same to her, every time she visited…

A small fairy hovered near the tree of the city hall. Not taking much interest in it, the Halfling went on to her usual, dull routine. At least, so she thought.

Serena Voi caught glimpse of motion near the fountain, a few feet from Jayek. Her eyes widened as a male Halfling materialized from thin air and turned to look at her. She froze.

“Miss Serena,” the male Halfling said.

Serena blinked. How did he know her? How did he know her name, especially the one not many people call her by?

She managed a dull “…huh?”

The male Halfling did not answer her. He reached out for a scroll and quickly handed it to her. “Take this scroll ta Captain Lyam,” he ordered.

Serena, clueless of what the man was talking about, simply took the scroll and opened it. It wasn’t like the usual scrolls she’d seen. No magic. It was all writing. A few paragraphs written lightly. Her eyes immediately locked on to the very fist word she recognized: Mezzu.

Serena looked back up, but just as quick as the Halfling was in given her the note, he was gone. She turned to look behind her, seeing nothing but the lone fairy dart off towards the gate. She frowned.

“Not know captain…” she spoke out loud to herself, lost.

She narrowed her eyes. Whether she knew him or not, it didn’t matter. The letter had Mezzu’s name on it, so that meant the man, the Shadowdancer claimed she had to look for, might know where Mezzu was.

Serena tapped the magical pendant on her chest, her armor flashed into place on her body, and then she set out to find this so-called “Captain Lyam”.

Prescia visits Salandra daily, bringing fresh food and soups.
She sometimes stays for hours on a stretch, singing songs and telling stories of past adventures.

In the room where Bella rests another cot is set up, a set of bags and other miscellaneous items cover the floor, it would seem as if the occupant intends on staying for some time. Suzy stays with Bella almost constantly now. She talks quietly and stays close to her and when she is sleeping she keeps watch and sees to it that she is not disturbed.

Her reasons for doing this are her own but she would seem to have made it her role to sit and help the badly damaged hin to recover. Bella for her part seems to accept Suzy’s presence with good grace though occasionally she would look a little lost. But others she can be seen hugging her closely as if she were the only thing in the world to hang on to.

Willow leaves a nice sheet of parchment posted on the board with sap from a pine tree. Written in green ink, it reads as follows:

To my friends,

I'm going to be leaving the Amia. I have some things I need to do on the mainland and I also feel a bit home sick so I'm going to go visit my family. I have some Drudic business to take care of in the city of Silverymoon. If you need anything from me, I will be spending most of my time there, in Silverymoon, at the Silverglen, which is a sacred grove of Silvanus, and Temple of Selune. Send word to me there if you need to get a hold of me for any reason. I will be gone for a month and a half's time at the very least and two and a half months time at the most.

My first stop from here is Waterdeep, for personal reasons. Next, I'll make my way to Neverwinter and Neverwinter Wood and then, Silverymoon. Once done, I'll be going to the High Forest. Lastly, I'll be porting home to Luiren to see my family. I'll be porting back to Amia from Lurien.

I wish you all the best while I'm gone. May the Oak Father, Moonmaiden, Green Sister and the Mother all protect you.

Before leaving on her long trip, Willow visits Bella to see how she's doing. She would find her sleeping in the dead of night. She smiles at seeing her safe at least. She leaves a note under her pillow and touches her head lightly, whispering a blessing.

Two figures hop off the cart at Bendir Dale, they would seem to have come from the direction of Kampo’s. They pass by the Dale gates and the guards eyes would widen in astonishment to see Bella. She looks so much more thin and drawn that they would have remembered her but that is nothing as she has been receiving the best of care from both the Salandrans and her friends. They stay quite silent as she is led past them towards the graveyard on the hill.

Bella dressed in her radiant sunburst robes once more, her bags and belongings having been returned to her it would seem, as she walks quietly but stoically up the hill.
A single candle burns there in front of the idol and with her feet feeling like they were encased in lead she is drawn ever closer to it. She drops down in front of the candle as if meditating her hands rest on the top of her thighs as she starts to whisper.

Her escort who had stayed close to her all this while, would be recognised as Suzy. She rests her hand on Bella’s right shoulder, simply being there for her. As Bella starts to whisper the onlooker would see Suzy wipe away a tear, the sadness on her face plain. Bella’s, her head bowed low, a single tear rolls down her right cheek to her chin and drops onto the waiting ground.

The heavens seem to open as if the gods wept with that single tear and the two of them begin to ge soaked through. Suzy drapes her cloak over Bella to keep the worst of the wet away from her. Finally she looks up and offers her hand to Suzy. Taking it in her own she leads Bella away and back to the temple to rest.

Suzy draws the blanket a bit higher over Bella's sleeping form while checking on her, as she often does. She ponders to herself, as she watches the sleeping girl, over this strong sense of protectiveness and caring she had come to feel over Bella. She couldn't help but feel that she'd come to know Bella as a sister figure as well as a friend. Having grown up with only brothers, the aspect of having a sister is warmly welcomed... No matter her motive for staying here with Belladonna, Suzy maintains a role of speaking with, caring for and tending to Bella and her needs. Once satisfied with knowing that Belle is fast asleep, she returns to the stool by the pool's edge. She sits down with a book and sheet of parchment, drawing a pencil from the book's spine.

She only writes for a few moments before she is interrupted by the sound of her stomach growling. She glances down at it, and then to the small wooden bowl next to her seat. She hasn't eaten much over her stay with Belladonna. She refuses to eat any food that Prescia brings, as it wasn't intended for her. By the same token, the temple's food is for patients who really need it. Instead, with the permission and guidance of the temple clerics, she has been living on a diet of herbs, nuts and the occasional small tomato she collects in moderation from the temple's gardens and forest areas.

She tips the bowl with a toe, watching as it totters about in a circle before coming to rest again. She shakes her head and chases away the thoughts of hunger. She'd resolved already to take only what was necessary to live, and there was no point in changing that now.

After some time of scribbling on the parchment, she reads over her letter. Satisfied, she slips it into an envelope and places it next to her on the floor. She then flips open the cover of the book she'd been using to write against, and turns to an empty page. Reaching back, she carefully unties the black ribbon from her hair and allows it to fall around her shoulders. After tying the ribbon around her wrist delicately, she begins to write on the blank page.

**********

Suzy spends the majority of her time with Bella, leaving only to collect herbs and nuts for food, which is usually while Belle is asleep. She also makes a point to make herself scarce when visitors come to see Belle, deciding to respect the privacy of her friend and her guests. When Bella is sleeping, Suzy keeps a day-by-day journal. She uses it to note Bella's progresses and backslides, as well as her own personal feelings about things. Tonight's entry tells of a trip to pay respects to a girl known only as "Blondie"...

And how she hasn't seen or heard from Isayah in weeks. She doesn't let her discouragement or worry show, though, and maintains a positive and caring attitude towards Belle. That is her top priority, and she has dedicated herself to it.

The bag is swiftly intercepted by Suzy as she runs her daily errands, and is kept hidden from Belladonna. She asks the templars and nurses to make no mention of its arrival, and returns to Bella's room immediately.

// It just occurred to me today, how come weapons are not allowed to be wielded in the Dale, but magical staffs are? I mean, isn't the premise the same? In fact, it seems more likely someone ICly could do more "damage" with a staff to the town and its residents, than someone with a sword could, before the militia subdued them.

anyway, just a question.

This is posted on the town hall.

Apparently, a giant eagle is nesting north of the graveyard, on a ledge above it. Avoid going out of the graveyard, until noted otherwise. We'll take care of it, one way or the other. Any incidents with the eagle should be reported to militia.

On the inn, the following notice is left. It is unsigned, though fairly obvious who put it there.

Mezzu is back safely. Please find the time to welcome him back.

It would be noted that Benki's semi-regular camp, that he sets up on next to the grave yard sometimes, would be moved near the Hol and his men. He would be asking about the eagle and telling people in Hin to stay away:

Don't get close! A eagle will fight to the death if it's about to lay or already has eggs!

He would be trying to make sure no one goes up so they don't get hurt, as well as so they don't disturb or try to hurt the massive winged beast.
