Personally, I'd recommend changing your friends.......

... Now, that fact granted. Is it really so bad of those of us who enjoy trading words rather than dealing with a completely different system? Is it really so difficult, honestly, to humor us with Roleplay? To -get- that we came here to create a story for our characters, and we happen to be doing that by interacting with others, on a Non-Mechanical Level? It might take longer for you to win or lose, and it may look rather unrealistic when comparing levels. So? If you're so hung up on levels, I have no desire to fight you.
I think you're now trying to make me feel guilty about playing NWN, because you would rather it was an FR version of the Sims. I -get- that you'd rather it was FR-Sims, but it's not. This is a level 1-30 NWN server where PvM is your main source of levels, and PvP is enabled for 95% of its volume. I don't accept that I should feel any obligation to cater to you in this regard, since I did not log you in.
I'm glad you like the RP here, and I'm sorry that you don't like the action side, but I think it is unreasonable to ask that other players pretend it just doesn't exist, even if your IC action lead to it. Cake. Eating. Pick one.
Actually, even though I -did- quote your comment on that statement, that was in no way meant toward you. And I knew in the back of my head I should have said that, but I was hoping you'd catch it.
I was focusing more on the rest who don't -seem- to get it.
There's a difference between 'FR-Sims', where you eat, drink, sleep with and just try to stay alive, and 'FR-RP', where everything - including combat - is dealt with in text.
EDIT:
As for the rest, I don't think it's too much of an issue for me, one person out of... 175? ... To ask to be humored by RP-Fights. Again, I won't remember it tomorrow if it happens right now, it wasn't memorable and it won't show in my character. If it's roleplayed, not only will I remember it, that poor character's going to be injured for a week or two IRL.
[sarcasm] of course it is unfair in PvP, some builds are just way too powerful and we shouldn't consider the PvP part that happens IG and ICly as RP that happened, because they were powerbuild munchkins. I mean, it is unfair they can survie against a demon summoner and I can't. I should be able to survive against one and beat it in the name of my god, even though I am about level 16 and the demon summoner is maxed out. but that doesn't make a diffrence I should be able to kill it [/sarcasm off]
PvP is part of the game world, one of my main charachters often engages in PvP because of her belifes in others. Amareth is a sun elf, and she has very strict belifes on undead, feinds, drow, tieflings, orcish races, goblioniods and general other monsters, ie they deserve to be shot with her arrows. PvP is a part of her rp, and a good bit of importance to it. is it the only one? hell no, there is more to her then just killing the above mentioned things. but still PvP is part of the game world and thus IC.
i completely agree with you, and it seems that the rules are making PVP more and more difficult, as in 'you gotta have a good reason to attack something', but being drow isn't reason enough? how do you react to a mortal enemy you can't attack? sit there and have tea? wtf. PVP is apart of the game and it is slowly being degraded, take note of cordor as a non-pvp area. a level 30 can no longer blow shit up. i don't think the pvp rule needs to be more constricting than it already is. you have hostile creatures roaming the surface that paladins can't even attack. rules like that limit classes to extreme extents, in fact it morphs the classes into something they are not.

I think the best way to sum up my own view is I would appreciate a solid blend between action, and RP.
While at times I would love to be humoured in a pure RP fight (because I have a character for which it'd be damn interesting considering mechanically it's difficult to make the kind of fighting style he has though in the build he has now he comes as close as I reckon I'm getting without widget requests) , I know that the mechanics are there for a reason. More often then not, the mechanics beat me out.
It has made me bloody bitter sometime that someone who's a power build, can more get their way (even if they are doing something supremely idiotic and in any normal campaign should have something happen to cut them down to size) in some RPs especially those of a nature requiring conflict, but I have seen a number of more power built characters that are still RP'd according to stats and similar, and I appreciate that just as well.
i completely agree with you, and it seems that the rules are making PVP more and more difficult, as in 'you gotta have a good reason to attack something', but being drow isn't reason enough? how do you react to a mortal enemy you can't attack? sit there and have tea? wtf.
I don't know. What -do- you do to your 'mortal enemy' in a Roleplay Server? Hells, that's a tough one.
Why the Hell is it so difficult for you to understand: ROLEPLAY? Is it because you avoid -that- instead of -mechanical conflict-?
if you are casually walking along with someone who you deem a friend, and they pull a dagger out and stick it in your eye, I don't give a damn about your AC and DR(MAYBE your tumble, but thats a common skilldump that doesn't reflect much ICly) , there is a freakin dagger in your eye. RP fighting can be much more realistic. its real world fighting, not mechanics.
Well sure you just ignored natural armor class, deflection armor class, and probably a couple others that any mid level DnD character would have.
You can decide that you have 1000 ab and they have 0 AC in that situation but the rules consider them only flat footed and they lose their dodge AC.
Why the Hell is it so difficult for you to understand: ROLEPLAY? Is it because you avoid -that- instead of -mechanical conflict-?
I do understand what you are saying, and I don't actually engage in mechanical conflict unless someone approaches me. I play defensive, and that is how it is. Now, I'm pretty sure you haven't seen any of my -serious- roleplay, cuz I'm still working on a character idea/plot. In fact, I'm not sure you've seen me roleplay at all.

Granted, I don't even know who you are in-game. Doesn't mean that I can't judge my views based on what you've said on the forum, until I -do- see you in-game. After all, that's all I can logically go on.

Pretty funny this thread is littered with bickering from people that have i assume (thus making an ASS out of U and ME) been on this server for less than two months and have no idea how constricting pvp/evil rp used to be.

I hope all your characters are nice, cowards or that you hang out in no-pvp areas because frankly if i wanted to RP a fight i'd go to a chatbased RP. Sometimes i will humour myself with rolls and the like, normally i'll just hit up my DM and continue a pnp campaign if i am feeling so inclined.

Given the pvp rules are less constricting than 12-15 months ago i am at a loss as to what the premise of you derailing this topic is.
To the OP.
All is not entirely lost sir. Sure it can be a real bitch coming up with constructive evil RP given that Pridegamers and Winbuttons abound, but it can be very rewarding aswell. On my evil characters i've probably had a 10 to 1 loss - win ratio in terms of longterm plots and projects, most of which is the faction, characters or city targeted has the memory of a Goldfish so the RP falls on its arse due to lack of continuity.
The RP, plans and the like that have come off have been most fun though.
Also as a note. You can be a good antagonist, the Sun Elf Council, Qirlan, Lyle Torrowfire, as examples, can be extremely annoying (to my characters) and have my character reaching for their weapons.

Quite the assumption, and I'd be thrilled if you could prove the assumption. Unfortunately, you couldn't accurately do so.

Most of them are nice, sarcastic or make actions which could prove aggressive, but not in such a way they deal damage - or any real damage at the least - to the characters.
It pretty much doesn't strike anyone's attention unless they're looking for PvP, which is why I do things the way I do. Amia has a reputation of which, if it weren't for the number of players (Thus, testing my own abilities at keeping up with everyone), I'd have a lack of desire to remain.

Completely different characters agreed but when Bobo wants to or the RP takes him that way he can be just as antagonistic as Wyjyn.
Actually as a race i find the Hin to be pretty cool with the racial antagonism. Its rather nice to see that just because someone plays an elf doesn't automatically guarantee them a free pass when they walk through the gates.

If you're a talker, don't act like you're a fighter.
If your strength is diplomacy and words, use them to avoid getting into the situation that the lunkhead is going to smush you to pulp using.
I lose more than I win, in pvp. Its still part of the way it goes. Do I get frustrated sometimes? Yeah. Its all included, it builds character tho, and offers fun plots
I had a situation where someone was bothering my merchant PC..
Know what she did? She gave Va a little talking to, and he took care of the problem for her. Know what I felt then? Happy. Why? Talking and manipulating is her forte.
Also, HIRE lunkheads of your own. I did that with Xyr, why? Because, it was handy having them there. Plus it gives the players which enjoy playing the role. It was fun!
If you're a politician and suppose to be a rich bugger, act like it, hire people to do your heavy lifting..

what armor covers your eyes? then you can't see and I'll stab you in the wherever your armor joints are. if you aren't expecting it, and it ends up in your eye, it should be no different for a lvl 3 or lvl 30.
Dwagin, how about we let people roleplay their characters' failures and not ridicule them over it like you just did? If a character is built like a talker but acts like a fighter, there's nothing wrong with that when the player intentionally has the character overstepping their boundaries. And no, the rich, wealthy politician PC doesn't have to always hire goons to do things for them. They can get red-faced and angry and even physically violent if they want to, and still get pushed over by those built to defend themselves. All it means is that the PC hasn't learned his IC lesson yet, not that the player is doing anything wrong, like you say.
According to you, I should never have played a PC of mine who was not built for combat or for intelligent talking, but suffered strong anger management issues that often turned to sudden, bare-fisted violence that couldn't be backed up in any truly harmful way. And after slapping somebody, and maybe getting slapped back even harder, just had to cry in frustration at her impotence in handling a situation, and her own stupidity at not just walking away.
clearly we all hate each other's style of play and its a wonder we bother ever logging in at all. and yet the server amazingly is still full. so lets just stop complaining, and go play, huh? the ranting isnt getting us anywhere. seriously.

S'a difference between playing and enjoying. Well, in my case at most times.

Magic armor because we are in a magic world.
You can get a humongous war hammer and use all the strength you had and slam it down on top of a lich's skull. The lich takes no damage unless the weapon is +4 or better...
You can ignore the rules and go for what makes sense at the time, but don't expect other people to always play along because there are rules for most of this stuff. Sometimes it does make sense but a level 3 really shouldn't be laying out a level 30 very often.
I think back to the best PvP/combat roleplay I have ever done and 9 times out of 10, its ones where the duel has lasted absolutely ages, with breaks in between to taunt each other with emotes and text.
This usually is somewhat staged. You find a class similar to yours and similar levels. That makes you fairly evenly matched. You agree to an agression pact and become each others nemesis. Your characters have deep respect for each other as rivals. You play up the jibes and taunts and soon learn when PvP is on and when its time to step back, throw some well placed verbal jibes before going for it again. Typically, when I've done it in the past, its around three of these such RP moments in the middle of combat. You can tell when they are because the person hits the S key and walks backwards.
The RP drives to the final battle moments where you then fight it out to the last.
Its a good little formula that incorporates all the PvP and RP one could need.

I usually find that in PvP I die due to my laggy internet connexion. Of course, 3/4 of those times I'd lose anyway, but my point is ... if they didn't break the rules, live with it.

What I was trying to say was, 'If you can't handle the IC concequences of your character picking a fight, don't have your character pick a fight. Or...
If your character is the type to talk big, but not want their face smashed in... then they should hire someone ICly who can fight for you your PC or protect them, to avoid it. '
Now if you as a player want your PC to get their face smashed in, that is fine by me, go right ahead, it builds character, I've done it before myself. I had thought I conveyed that in the 'I lose more than I win' blurb. That it would illustrate that my own PC had let her mouth get her in trouble and learned her lesson.

You just summed up the whole of my characters on Amia. Pretty much my life experience in any conflict situation excepting like 5 players. People of Amia: just because a character does something stupid does not mean the player of said character is OOCly that stupid.
I also wish other people would embrace some flaws for themselves. I think I kinda argued about this with Iron once, but it didn't exactly go how I planned. I've refined my argument quite a bit, now.
My main problem is that people on this server, when in IC conflicts, before making any decisions alone or ICly doing research on the decision... will go to any and all OOC sources to ask about it. Or they'll depend on their OOC friends because why would an OOC friend have a character that would ICly stab them in the back? That's why they're OOC friends! So that wouldn't ever happen!
Conflict has become OOC. That is why people equate my intelligence with the intelligence of my characters (admittedly, it's probably not MUCH more... but it is more... I guarantee you...) That is also why I get shit thrown in my face-- because people assume I do the same OOC conflict working that others are doing. Ugh.
I'm going to sound like a complete and total ass. But that's why I now have limited myself, for awhile, to a few select people with any Conflict RP. They play it right, they play it fun, and there's no hurt feelings. I love it. It's elitist and saddens me, but it's now what I've done... and surprisingly, the Amia-drama (I love the rhyme) in my life has ceased.
[/rant]
EDIT: I'm only lumping every player in Amia ("except for like 5") together right now because I'm kinda bitter. But I'm not really that ignorant (all the time). I know there are other fun Conflict RPers out there, I'm just sick of trying to find them.
I have a similiar view to estara, the difference being that I have an adamantine thick damage reduction to OOC insults so I just don't care about whinging that much.
One thing that will save you a lot of problems on amia is this: If someone is OOCly in your face, don't take it seriously because the chances are extremely high that in about 5 mins they will have calmed down and will be reasonable to talk to again. I personally found this to be true even for budly, I think the issues with him were people responding with aggression and fanning the flames.

I just have my characters do as they would. If fighting happens, it can be mechanical via normal combat or through emotes. I don't mind either way. Nor do I do conflicts for the sake of conflicts. It's all about character developement. Saris for instance is all about making dragons rule the world. And there will be alot of china plates broken to do it, since obviously people don't want to give up thier place.

I've never equated anything that any PC has done to their player judgmentally, nor do I think someone should ever do so. It is illogical..
I do on the other hand often cite examples on how I and my characters feel or would do things. This does not equate into me telling people that is how they have to do it or they are stupid, or wrong in their RP, though sometimes I feel it is taken that way. It is unintended to be taken that way. It is just how I communicate.

We can all wish and want varying things of other people or situations. Unless we communicate these they will not know them. What that has to do with your inferred intelligence I don't know. If people are treating you like you're stupid because your PC isn't bright, then they are jerks and you should not be around them.

Limiting yourself to playing with people you have fun with and staying away from people you do not is perfectly understandable of an action and reaction to uncomfortable situations. It is staying within a comfort zone, and normal.

I should specify that I mean "Conflict RP" as in sustained, on-going conflict... though I don't care if it's faction-faction, PC-faction, PC-PC... but it's not just a few PVP encounters.

Well, Dwagin, we all have preferences and such. There's nothing wrong with those. The problem is when you start judging those with other preferences as lesser. I do not think that if someone is playing a "flawless" PC (which I'm not quite sure exist) that they are less of an RPer... it is only in respect to Conflict RP that I wish for people to open themselves up to their own weaknesses. Instead of things like, "OMG, so, there's some dude chasing after Li'thani...... I can't tell you who 'cause that's Metagaming..... but if you were in my shoes, what would you do?" "OH, you'd set a trap and wait around with some Greater Sanctuary and Domination scrolls? That's a good idea....."

Umm... I'm not sure if you think I'm referring to you, but if you don't do these things, then I'm not. Nor am I sure if you think I am saying people purposefully Metagame. I don't necessarily label it as Metagaming. It's not exactly a matter of going to one another with all the details of a plot, or spying secrets...
More like... OOC peer pressure, in a way. Asking for advice in a certain IC situation your char is in. Or if the chance comes along to nearly destroy another PC's life, many people have been reluctant because of their OOC ties. Likewise, if you are the PC's life who gets destroyed, you are upset because on the OOC level you were having so much fun and now you're not, because your PC's life is nearly destroyed.
Does that make sense?

Hahaha. Yes, it is pretty sad. That is why it has gotten on my nerves many times. And naah, I'm pretty good at clearing things up myself, because there's really no reason for DMs to be involved in conflicts unless absolutely necessary. Usually DMs are not necessary, but if it gets to that point, if I just do as you say and slip away and not be around them, that's essentially what a DM's involvement would end in anyway. Someone banned or told to suck it up and then you're probably not going to be around them much anyway 'cause someone's mad at someone??
If someone blatantly breaks a rule, sure, I'll report them... sometimes. I'm also really lazy and don't always do that. But if it's a matter like this, where I think what is going on is OOC Conflict RP rather than IC fun, and there's really no way to prove it or to prove it's wrong... eh. What's the point?

Still, it makes me sad that this is so often times what is necessary.
Strictly RP'ing out a fight is somewhat pointless. The winner usually seems to be the one who can type faster than the other one. Disregarding level difference is also ridiculous. Anyone that tells me that a level 3 should have even a fighting chance against a level 30, I say pick out your choice of professional fighter.... MMA, boxer, fencer, you pick as long as they're professional.... now put that trained fighter next to Joe Everyman and have them fight. Yes, there is a minuscule chance that Joe Everyman will win, but there is an overwhelming chance that the trained fighter will win. So much of a chance that I don't think Vegas bookies would even give odds on the fight.
I'm all for round by round fights with a heavy RP element. We have dice bags for a reason. Roll out the initiative and take it old-school. Roll out each action of each round and emote heavily while you're doing it. If you're worried about cluttering up the text wall with number rolls, have a DM do the rolls for you and send tells to each player on what they rolled and what it means. Then, just like in a real fight, you have no idea what the other person is going to do until they do it.

the winner to an rp brawl would be the one with the more buff armor or race, builds don't mean shit.
anyway, for the people who said they 'tolerate' amia, and don't play here for fun.... umm.... why? (i think you secretly like amia)
turning down all action on amia except for monsters would make amia like.... go down the drain... just because amia has such crappy role-players doesn't mean you have to down the whole server, i recommend more threads with like rp tips and crap like that.

Am I to assume what I a interpreting from this is result of bad wording?

Cake. Eating. Pick one.

unless the trained fighter is just standing around taking a piss on a tree and Joe Everyman comes up behind him and kicks him in the nads as hard as he can. I don't care how trained you are. A shot there is a shot there.
Take it from me... kicking a guy in the twig and berries doesn't always work. Sometimes he looks at you funny for a second right before giving you a black eye.

In the real world, yes. In Amiaverse, the Bob the Epic has almost certainly taken Armourskin, so his delicate scrotum skin is actually as durable as a biker's jacket.
He's also wearing a magic raincoat that is as good at deflecting blows as a sit of scale mail is at absorbing them. Around his neck is an amulet that does the same thing as Armourskin, only twice as well. If Bob's a DEXer, then he's wearing Archmagi clothes that are as tough as chainmail. If he's a Bard then it's a scalemail that's as good as full plate. If he's in full plate, bwahahaha, he's wearing three sets of scalemail on top of each other.
Epic Dodge makes the entirity of the above academic, and 10 points of damage reduction from items or feats mean even a crit from 14STR Joe Everyman and his 1d3 feet is going to be absorbed.
So no. Bob can sleep with his legs splayed and Joe can break every bone in his foot trying to stamp on Bob's nuts, and Bob will wake up none the wiser. He's wrapped up like some industrialist's fetishised version of the Michelin Man's outfit, and it takes equally ridiculous magical weaponry to punch through.
I think a better analagy for real world arse-kickers and DnD is that they are the same level as us, except they're pure Fighters and we are Wizards, with the pretty big handicap that magic doesn't exist here.

Yep, it pumps testosterone through the male body. It can even send men into a rage, it is not a good self defense move at all.

Actually depending on how hard you kick, you could put the guy into a slow, painful and unpleasant death too.. *not sure the exact trigger but my Subject Control Tactics' teacher explained it's dangerous*

Natural AC may be "a harder shell" on paper, but in effect the more Nat. AC you have, the more often your enemy will miss. If it emulated the hardening of skin, it should give Damage Reduction or Resistance. It cannot soak blows because if it does, why would other blows hit? It cannot deflect the blow either because that is supposed to be Deflection AC.
I just find the whole AC routine hairy if you go at it logically and thus I think a level 3 with a mean leg muscle could destroy a level 30's nuts if he wasn't careful. If the level 30 was wearing any Damage Reduction or Resistance, it is a different story. AC has nothing to do with it IMO.
