I have one general opinion on this mess. I have said it before on these forums, and lo and behold, I shall say it again.

No matter who you are, no matter your job, no matter your character, just quit whining, eh? GS'ers? Death isn't the worst thing. I've had hilarious rp after I died. Just roll with it and don't get all irate cause your character doesn't seem to be quite the epic BA you thought it was.

Other side? Death isn't the worst thing. I've had hilarious rp after I died. Just roll with it and don't get all irate cause your character doesn't seem to be quite the epic BA you thought it was.

Pvp happens, bad rp happens, lotsa irritating things...happen. Know what makes them go smoothly? Stay pleasant, talk it out, and move on with your lives. I have -never- had an ooc problem with someone on my own, no matter how horrible the rp. I just let them know whats up and get their opinion on whats happening.

As far as the masses of pvp killings? Occasionally, characters come along that simply do that. And if you talk to them, it might turn out they are only following the rp of their character. This conflict creates things for us to do! It makes things interesting, even if you don't like being killed once in a wee bit.

Come on guys and gals. Just calm down, grab a dew and some ice cream, and watch them burn and hang your mangled corpse! IE...just talk to each other, and help one another play the game right.

Perhaps if the DM's weren't so overloaded with our bulls**t, maybe we'd have more epic events? *om noms the food for thought*

QFE! QFE! QFE!!!! AGGHHH.

I probably would have been alot angrier if not for this guy.
It is truth!

Dont whine, just roll with it.
Ironically, I've never got in a fight with a drow where I was treated OOCly badly, for stomping them, or. . .uh. .that one time
(shh! I thought I could take out a party of drow casters. They ate me for breakfast! Shhh! )

They're good sports.
Maybe the surface villans need to follow suit?

I dare to say it is because they are sort of elite. Not in a bad way, when you play a Drow you sort of accept that every non drow will hate and kill you, so why not make it most pleasent for everyone involved I ask?

That's alright.

We drow are elites. It's about time you all realised that.

Of course we're the most non-restrictive elite in the universe. I mean it's harder to become known on the surface than it is on the Underdark. Heck, I like to think of the drow as a big group which is subgroups because to be honest pretty much everyone is OOCly tolerant, and new players are 99% of the time helped out, and the 1% they aren't is usually when they're trying to abuse a power they do not yet have.

HOLY JESUS CHRIST!

i luv u for saying that.

I have to say that I see a lot of what I call 'impulse RPing'

this is simply just saying what you would say like in ur internet chatroom in game, very poor quality.

its almost as if the characters have no fabric of believability and most of them are childish teenagers in a minimal state of RP, only on for like a WoW substitute or something. Ex:

Oooo, pretty hair, mine is colored purple.
---
Pah! Banites! Thats original. //heavy sarcasm//
---
Mr. Skully skull wants to fight?
---
Use the teddy bear torture style!
---
Pretty colors.
---
many more

RP tips

pay good attention to these and you'll be pro.

http://nwvault.ign.com/?dir=thegame&content=roleplaying

that is one of the best/easy guides i've seen so far, read it and understand how to do some good rp

It's not that good at all, really. There's only 3 tips sections for players, with the rest meant for DMs, and 2 of those 3 are either misguiding, or just plain wrong.

Bad - Better - Best wrote:

"Thou", "thee", and "ye" doesn't improve roleplay whatsoever. You're no better if you say "thou" than you are if you say "you". Being able to amateurishly use same very basic Old English doesn't make you any better than anyone else, inherently.

Bad - Better - Best wrote:

This isn't so much wrong as it is misleading. Letting your character be killed doesn't make you a good roleplayer, either. While letting your character die might be good roleplay, it might also be back roleplay.

im sure you can replace the 'ooc' with the childish behavior and it'll fit in just nice

Correct. They still have their place, but IMO, it is a limited one, based solely around your own creativity. For example, one of my PCs does somewhat commonly use Old/Middle English pronouns and grammar, but I have one goal in doing so: it is the only way I know to show the English-speaking player's audience that the PC speaks in a manner that is completely archaic to modern Common, without "inventing" an archaic manner of speaking that no one player would ever grasp, or by being horrifically lame and writing "this character speaks in a long since outdated fashion" in the profile, or Gods forbid, in an emote. And even still, shamefully, I do that sometimes...just to make it hit home. The character speaks this way because his primary language is Celestial, and he was taught the "Common" tongue from some very, very, very outdated source materials.

The only other character I've seen do this religiously is Frey, even if he does butcher the correct pronouns in their grammatical forms. Though I've always assumed that to be intentional, his own means of distinguishing his use of language a step further away from "reality".

Suffice it to say, when I say that using modern conventions to convey meaning or create associations in the players' mind in a fantasy setting, this is exactly what I'm talking about.

If a person comes up to me and says, "Nuna yulo farimi ho!" and then tries to tell me that it is Common, but an old dialect that I should understand and send me a tell of what it means, I'm going to be like, "Wtf?"

Whan that April with his showres soote
The droughte of March hath perced to the root
And bathed every veine in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flowr

That said, "thou", etc., doesn't make someone a bad roleplayer, and it can have it's occasional place. I just meant that someone could easily use it, and other Old English words, and still be a terrible roleplayer, while someone could never use them once, and be the best roleplayer in the history of the world.

That passage from Chaucer is even more obscure when you read original text. But yeah, they don't make or break. In fact, they really don't have anything to do with great RP themselves, thou fucking knave!

I had to read most of the Canterbury Tales in Chaucer's original style for one of my classes, once. Fun times.

Isn't that Early Modern English? What is the difference between someone using archaic grammar in the form of 'thou' and a drow being flamed for using 'dos'?

Drow is kind of its own thing. It is at least somewhat recognizable. I think much of the flaming comes from this:

You should naut be here.

[Drow] You should naut be here.

And people generally assume that when you have the second instance, it should just be:

[Drow] You should not be here.

Or: Dos zhal'la naut tl'uchado =)

Personally I love antiquated verb forms and spellings, but people often use them incorrectly e.g. "'tis a dangerous place it is", and that makes me wince.

Oooh man, you just used the real drow language. I used to RP on a chat-based server where there were drow characters, and these players - whom I admired for their tenacity, if nothing else - had memorized this language. They typed far too fast to be using a translator, IMO. It was interesting to watch, but totally impossible for me to RP with them because I didn't know what they were saying!

People using any form of language that is not modern is to add some flavor to the RP. Be that smattering Old English, drow, elven, whatever... the only thing that gets me... and this is just a pet peeve, mind you. Is when people use thee's and thou's with contractions such as isn't, won't, can't, don't or the absolute worst ain't. It just kind of contradicts itself, ya know?

"Thou ain't a real knight." just sounds like I was talking with Bubba from backwoods West Virginia who somehow got hit in the head and thought he was in Medieval England.

So, I suppose my real complaint here is proper grammar... or at least an attempt at it.

You do realise Old English is nearly impossible to understand, right?
Read this if you don't believe me.

And I agree with you about the grammar - if one is going to use antiquated words, please use them correctly.

Unless you're an actual linguistic historian, the chances are you're horribly wrong about how old a word is.

The classic example is people saying 'okay' and causing winces. It predates the word 'hello' by about fifty years.

I am confident that a linguistic historian(which I am not) could piece together a sentence that sounds to me like Henry VIII would have said it, but is in fact composed entirely of words spawned after the Second World War.

The setting of DnD is a giant botch of anachronisms anyway, so I'd not fuss unduly about it. Just make sure you don't sound like a surf bum and you'll be fine.

I tried learning it with someone. I gave up on using the Ogham alphabet quite quickly, followed by the entire language.

In the part of the Pennines where I used to live many people commonly use thee and thou, pronounced thaa. Tis a sign o tha midden thaa wer born in.

I used this accent on one of the first dwarfs I played - but dropped it soon after. I was new to the server and rp. And receiving party comments, OOC tells and dressed up IC put downs gets boring real fast. Sure, I knew there was nothing wrong with the way I spoke...but it gets yawn filled tiring telling the umpteenth sugared up teen to stuff it and learn to speak like what the English do....Now I wouldn't drop it. Though I never cease to be amazed how a game constituted at its base of nothing more than zeros and ones can still produce so much snobishness about the way it should and shouldn't be played. Alas for the human race.

Ayup!

Ah 'avent 'ad any negative responses from trying to convey an accent like that.....questions, and puzzled looks, yes, but no negativity.

How does "I'm Henry VIII, I am, I am" rub you?

Anyway, Ky'irael uses "thee", "thou", etc. in the same way as Phearnun's stupid ugly giant. In prayers. Why? I don't know, it sounds nicer, somehow, like how all the prayers in the hymnal say "thou". It makes it sound more prayer-like!

In honesty folks, and TC, I think you take things far to seriously some times. Espically with RP. RP can be silly, it can be some what abusive towards given themes, and yet it can be perfectly entertaining, and simply harmless towards others.

Not everyone wishes to roleplay everything so seriously, sometimes people enjoy a bit of fleeting sillyness, and I feel if someone wants to crack down the old "RP Nazi" stick, they should instead place said stick some where else.

Hmmm, but, it doesn't sound like that applies to anything the OP is saying (not trying to flame, say you're 'wrong' in your attitude, or anything negative, just that your very sound advice doesn't seem applicable to the situation(s) stated).

It's more directed to a few posts by people above, but also applies to a few small bits the TC said. Such looking for attention, or ignoring attributes and such. Not really directed at him specfically, but applies none the less.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHA

OOooh.

Thank you.

I needed that.

Ahaha I just read this. And I thought it should be highlighted one more time.... because it's so full of.... idiosyncrasies....
