First, let me make it absolutely clear, the scenario discussed here is NOT about discussing in-game plots, nor is it sexual rp, or torture rp, or rp involving lewd inuendo, its just an ordinary private conversation between IC strangers.

Let me give an Real World example:

Say you’re sitting in a bar with some friends, or hey, even a mix of friends and strangers. There’s no-one else around. People are relaxed. You’re having a good time.

And then in the middle of a story you’re telling or a conversation you’re having, a voice comes from right behind you, from someone you can’t see, someone you don’t know, someone who is not part of the group or conversation and demands to know why you just said what you said. The voice does not introduce or explain itself, instead it questions you’re ability to judge the value of your own words and begins to criticise your speaking style, maybe even the vocabulary you use.

In Real Life if that happened, you’d get hold of the speaker, and shove his pretentious face so far down his throat that he would have to drink through a straw from his…

So when this happens to me in game, I’m not exactly excited about it.

Why? Well, apart from the fact that the rp I was trying to enjoy starts getting thrown all over the shop while I, with way more politeness than is merited, answer these unsolicited tells – it is also unbelievably arrogant of the RP policeman interfering to think that they have right to start sending the tells to me in the first place. Quite simply, who the Hell set you up with the right to play God?

If someone who is involved in rp is unhappy about the way it is going, I’m all for private tells to solve it with the other players involved. If you are an observer to some rp – a hidden observer I might add - and you disagree with it, either step IC into the rp, or keep your thoughts to yourself. In the extreme case that you really, really, really, really, really, really, really, think you are God and have to tell someone about it, flag a DM. Don’t bug me. Cos I’m not interested. And next time you pull that trick I’ll be way less polite than I have been so far.

Second peeve.

Someone’s going to tell me that it’s mechanically impossible. A pc or party is buffing by a portal crystal. While the buffing is going on an incoming portal arrives, but noone visible steps out of it. Party proceeds into the hunting area next to the crystal, only to find SD or SD’s there, just arrived – very strangely – when the party saw nothing. In this situation, I walk away. I can’t be arsed with the who was here first arguments, I’ll leave that to the kids. And of course, I can’t prove that they weren’t there first. However, if it is mechanically possible…as the empty incoming portal seems to point that it is, SD’s can port hidden…then it’s discourteous and rude. And those of you who do it, and read this, please cut it out.

Agreed with both points.

However there's also the other scenario, namely that this person or character does something that he couldn't. The RP is kept nicely between the select few who participate and you just watch as an outsider. And you see someone fly into the air without wings, part the ocean, turn water into wine, you get the idea. What do you do? Seeing someone RP like this brings the conclusion that he would do the same if your character was involved, or anybody else's. RP police is an awful thing, but rule police just has to be done sometimes in my humble one. Playing on Amia entails that you understand you're playing by a D&D ruleset.

I hope you took screenshots, otherwise, it makes no sense posting about it.

Probably the player who did both things doesn't even check the forums.

All of my characters that can sneak competently always go into ports stealthed; you never know if someone's lured a spawn over it, or if some enemy faction PC will be there.

Stop or I Cyber!

Wait, thats no theat.. Ehm..

Anycase, to the first part: Fully agreed with that. People shouldn't do that, they seriously got something stuck up their ass and think in a hoklier than thou attitude.

To the second point:
I would say that those who are there first claim the hunting ground, even while they buff. Running past them is a violation of the rules, so, violate them back.. in unspeakable manners! Mahaha.. Ahem.

Well, its not nice, they at least could've arsed themself to pose something, but just running past is stupid.

I have brilliant advice.

If the person who's being an ass with his policing is -not- a DM, ignore him/her. That simple! :D

As for the second part, you're right, just walk on and kill some baddies.

yeah, ignore any asshats you encounter.

and sneaking past someone to steal spawns isnt allowed. try and settle it IC, but they should always give in, because you are in the right, OOC.

I totally agree with all of Jan's points and would like to add another group of players who "boss camps" by logging in and out every 10 minutes a floor inside the dungeon. They'd technically hold the rights to the hunting ground on the merit that they're much far ahead than you are, and again there's no way prove otherwise without a long drawn out argument/dm supervision/ etc. Discourteous and rude.

Yeah , yeah, I know, I know ignore the asshats...- but I have a suspicion that someone might actually read the forum - if they are so knowledgeable about what is and isn't good rp they must refer to a source...hence the post

Oh yeah, and about the sneaking past the buffers...You can't be sure that they do sneak past...that's the problem. I see an empty incoming portal arrive. I enter the hunting area. There's SD's there...who us? Port in and sneak past? No...we came from the other side of the entrance, not the crystal side..incoming portal, what incoming portal? blah, blah blah

screenies can't prove it. so I just shrugs and goes somewhere else and leaves this post in case the asshat knows how to read

Well, I agree witht rp police, but what happened to me the other day, I play mage.

I myself, as a caster, was hidden in invis. But my summon and familiar were perfectly visible. Then came a group of people who just rpied something like *passes the two* In IC mind its right. But OOCly it was rather rude because I was already hunting there and mages rather stay save than are visible to the monsters.

In this case, if you see the summons, please, even thought your char might take them like nothing, please bother yourself to wait a moment before you just walk pass.. As in invis it is rather hard to rp to those without see invis.

Well I said to them in PM that it wasnt really nicely done, but we got trought it.

In this situation you're in the right. I'm not allowed for forum rules to expand on my peeve - so I won't, but I can assure it wasn't like this.

Small comment about this. It could just be that the person sending you the tells is in his/her mind simply trying to help you, so the person might not have intended to appear all high and mighty. More likely than not it's someone new to NWN RP, since just a little time in any server will likely show you such things are not always well received. It's good you stayed polite, and if even after telling them that such tells are not appreciated (nicely), they continued, they don't deserve being listened to, as said.

For teh second part - the crystal outside of a hunting area bit...

Well, many crystals that are not specifically in a hunting area, are generally situated near several of them.

While I personally, if I came through and saw a group buffing, would be polite enough to ask where they were going (so that I wouldn't "steal" their hunt area, and hey, might even be able to join), really, if you choose to buff for a couple minutes not inside the hunt area, you can't really lay any sort of claim to it, or expect anyone else to just *know* that you were headed left, not right.

May not be the case with this specific incident, of course. I have no idea. Just saying, that before getting annoyed or angry about such things, port yourself into the other persons shoes, and think of how it might look to them.

'Cause frankly, I see people/groups buffing up all teh time, all over the place, even right inside towns, on a quite regular basis. And most of the time, they aren't going anywhere. And I frequently see buffed up groups rp'ing near or beside crystals, again, who don't go off to a hunt area because they are just having some rp. So that being the case, the odds are more for buffed/buffing people to *not* be going into a hunt area, than *to* be.

Though again....I'd have been polite and asked anyway. That's just what I do. More than likely, I'd have tried to make it IC, unless I was in a rush.

This is why I despise most of the law enforcement. Abusing their power, being arsehats, etc. Their focus should be keeping the public safe, not filling their quota of tickets and being on powertrips. There are so many minor things they focus on, when they could be focusing their attention on more important things. Some of them, however, are great. It just seems alot of them suck.

abuse of stealth mode is what the first one sounds like to me for the first one. or is it something different? it sounds very retarded RP to me from the abuser *sigh* send em a tell saying you see them), and if they refuse to show up, just ignore them. they wanna be special, but what they don't realize is that half of the server is made up of shadow dancers. what i usually do in those cases is say something along the lines of "your not special, i've seen the same trick thousands of times before" then i just walk away, or ignore them.

The dream police, they come to me in my bed.
The dream police, theyre coming to arrest me, oh no.

You know that talk is cheap, and those rumors aint nice.
And when I fall asleep I dont think Ill survive the night, the night.

cause theyre waiting for me.
Theyre looking for me.
Evry single night theyre driving me insane.
Those men inside my brain.

The dream police, they live inside of my head.

The dream police, theyre coming to arrest me, oh no.

Well, I cant tell lies, cause theyre listening to me.
And when I fall asleep, bet theyre spying on me tonight, tonight.

cause theyre waiting for me.
Theyre looking for me.
Evry single night theyre driving me insane.
Those men inside my brain.

I try to sleep, theyre wide awake, they wont leave me alone.
They dont get paid to take vacations, or let me alone.
They spy on me, I try to hide, they wont let me alone.
They persecute me, theyre the judge and jury all in one.

cause theyre waiting for me.
Theyre looking for me.
Evry single night theyre driving me insane.

Yeah, sometimes I watch RP that makes me whip out my DC wand almost immediately. Shortly thereafter I'll fire it off two or three times in quick succession. Nothing beats that.
