So, I'm curious: what is happening in Amia today?
As I've played lately, I have begun to feel the world as more and more..static. Maybe it is seeing the same areas over and over again, maybe it is just bad luck with parties lately? But very often it seems like ..well. A video game.
This is not a flame or an attack on anyone in any way. I am just curious: what is going on in amia? I know there are more stories, movements, plot threads, etc.. going on. More recent events, more.. whatever. I just can't seem to find them in-character *dies*
I'd actually like to find something more to do in the game than run around and hunt.. and negotiate with others to go hunting... I'd my paladin to find more than "We must clear area X to save the local populous in case the gibbly beasts come down to the city" .. and I have another character who might like to get involved more politically.. to be moving or doing something for something greater than the next Boss loot..
So what movements are going down? What's happening in this vibrant living world?
Ideas, suggestions, stories.. anything is welcome as long as it is constructive.
Danke schon!

I often find myself having the same problem, which is also why I tend to take a lot of breaks from playing. Don't get me wrong, I love to RP with everyone, I just don't find it that exciting to do the same IC conversation every other day.
As for suggestions, try to find a faction that's to your liking, it helps. When you've become fart of a faction, try setting something in motion there.

As has just been said, this is a valid problem, but it usually means you either,
A) Need a break.
or
B) Need to get a fresh perspective. Join a new faction, or make an new character with a race and class outside of your comfort zone of play. You might find new circles of roleplay you otherwise didnt encounter, giving the game a fresh new feel.

Although I'm not exactly experienced, my suggestion would be to start some sort of project or activity that other people would have a reason to oppose, or decide to oppose some activity that other people are currently performing.

People who stay on Amia too long eventually turn into some form of bird.
Mc-chicken
Mother Goose
Seagull
To name a few examples. I would take a few weeks off for your own sanity.

Or instead of doing nothing but hunt and complain that's all you do, make an effort to do the contrary.
The day you stop complaining and start doing is the day you will enjoy Amia again.

Yeah, that's not so helpful. Seeing as it is a group activity, I can RP all i want, but without like-minded individuals I am talking to myself. No matter how enthusiastically I approach that it actually does get somewhat boring, it turns out.
That was kind of the reason for this post, asking general information about what is going on in the world because the groups I wind up in tend to have nothing more on their mind than hunt. You can decide that you aren't doing that anymore and hold out.. but it also might mean that a significant portion of your time is spent wandering more or less aimlessly.
But thank you for your answer. "Quit whining. If you acknowledge the problem it exists!" was exactly what I was looking for with my "asking for what people are up to" question.
Obviously the problem is that I secretly don't want to enjoy the server, which is why I continue to play on it.
Danke.

You missed the purpose of my post, you honestly did.
Part of "making an effort and doing something" is finding those like minded individuals, instead of complaining that you can't find any, on the forums.
Believe me, I quite know what you're talking about: It's the reason Torin exists.

Sadly, a lot of this might stem from what time you're logging on. Try sigining in at a different time, there'll be an entirely new group of people.
Besides that, give your character goals. Something he/she really wants to do- beyond hunting for loot and getting stronger. That goal creates a gateway to interacting with other players.
Another thing- make friends, AND enemies! Develop relationships for your character. If you've got nothing better to do and you get drug along in a hunt, RP the entire time. Flex your character traits. Make things more interesting yourself, and people will flock to you.
And if all else fails, make your own drama. I've seen several very succesful plots that involved one player using several of their own PCs to propagate an incredibly interesting story, with no DM help whatsoever.
If you take the initiative, eventually people will flock to you, and you'll have more things going on with your characters than you'll be able to keep track of.

It seems like you've just had the wrong sort of luck in hunting parties, IMO. Granted I haven't spent alot of time on the server yet, but in about 80 percent of the hunting parties I've been in, I found at least one person who RP'ed consistently with me throughout the duration of the hunt.
Also, maybe check the PC Notice Board/DM Event Stories and just grab at any event so as to get involved with the real plot on the island or meet new people?

Who do you play? I'll find some interesting things for you to do. Here's my thoughts though:
1. Up until level 30, most peeps are too busy hunting to get to level 30 and have no time for 'rp' except general convo's.
2. Then, when you finally get to said utopian number as my main finally did (after a year and several rebuilds) you have the opposite problem. No one to RP with because 90% of the server is out hunting or standing in Cordor Square talking small talk.
3. So even after you've a mission, got the faction you dreamed for, you'll still find half the time you're in a bind because there's no one around to forward said goals with/against.
Solutions?
Have some alts. to go hunting with...
find subplots to do.
Relationships? (can be quite problematic though as there's a lot of lonely people ooc who want to take it ooc).
DM events? (uncommon and usually faction based)
Deepen your character's personal goals beyond getting to 30 (eg., my paladin is off to find a holy grail, my assassin spends time planning the next major hit in infinite detail, tailing said person for days, looking for optimal time to strike).

Honestly, it becomes very difficult not to get bored very quickly with amia for the most part. I like the server, but when it comes to roleplay it can be very difficult to get into it because ultimately you know you can have little to no affect on amia. So whilst the "do something yourself" argument is nice, more often than not when you do you will find yourself facing the wrath of the DM team.
I think it can be summed up with: "Take matters into your own hands and generate your own roleplay...NO NOT THAT!"

Character development is awesome. I think RP is way more fun, and much more beneficial to your character than grinding. I know its taken longer for many, but it was atleast 6 months before I got my character max level. You don't always need to be in such a hurry to get to max level, if you spend more time RPing instead of hunting, who knows how many different doors of possibilities for RP you can open.

Like it was wrong with the Winyan Council's decision concerning fey? The elves take matters into their own hand, call a revote and elect a new council and start making decisions and all of a sudden their decisions are being overturned. Sure, its turning out to be alright IC roleplay atm but it could easily have turned into an OOC mess due to the overturning.

None of my PCs are max level, though. Not even my oldest PC, which is only level 27 or 28.
When your character has enough connections, he doesn't need to be almighty and a one man's army.
Developing their stories, participating on others' stories and stuff is always more important to me. Grinding is usually for when I am curious at a feat one of my PCs would get, or when I had a bad day and want to smack things around. Or when I didn't find RP, then I go hunting to see if my paths will cross someone else's and generate RP.

I've been playing on this server for four years with one character and she's still not level 30 I've had a -ton- of amazing RP, though.
As for the DM team always striking down anything anyone wants to do, that's just plain wrong. The situation in Winya was an exception, not the rule.
As I said before, don't wait for good RP to come to you, make it! Get a group together and go exploring in a little used area, see what hidden parts of the server you find, and RP accordingly.
The possibilities are only limited by your own imagination, really, and if you think something might be controversial, send a little PM to a DM and run it through.

There are some pretty cool stuff happening at the moment, namely with the Eternal Order. Really, if you want roleplay get associated in some way with the factions...even if you are not a part of them. Go visit the Eternal Order, Triadic Knights, Defenders, Winyans, Hin, etc. The evil factions tend to be a bit more secretive, but I am sure they are out there.

The Fey thing wasn't overturned, and look, you're getting a personalized DM plot regarding it.
I'd call it a resounding success.

How to pass the time on amia,(How I do it with a character ive been playing for years)
Start hunting epic bosses, on finding loot start selling, when selling make the rp fun try to go into detail. Learn more about your buyer, his past, make friends even of old enemies.
Give your character a skill, many a time I have simply invented gambling games with the die system. There are gamblers on amia and it is fun to throw away that gp for a laugh. Ive had some very very -very- fun times where once I was gripping my seat hopeing to roll a 15 out of d20.
Try and perform a song, organise a play, start riddle compitions. Gp atracts players, Players attract RP.
Go to lower hunting grounds, show lowbie hunters how to hunt give them your knowledge(within the rules).
Set up barackades and of seek money, or to stop evil undead etc, conflict generates rp, but also PvP be carefull.
Join a faction! or several, use the benifits from the all sell information or simply become enwrapped in the rp of a faction. If evil the banites are certainly a good one to go, if not evil perhaps the triadic knights or kellies.
Take that break 3 weeks 3 months? Coming back is always as addictive as when you first came. This time new faces and new oppertunities.
Be proactive say hi to those people standing around, maybe they are just like you and need someone to come along, be that someone. Just today I met a pirate who insulted me, I intended to scare him instead I ended up having a battle of rhymes. The player impressed me so much I would log on just to rp with him.
You dont need a DM to have fun on amia, You dont need to know the state of affairs, Create your own fun your own plots. Over time you will find people will ask about your plots. Instead of being on the outside you will be centre of attention.
Nothing gets handed too you, you need to work for it im currently finding AmiaB a whole new fresh start with lots of new faces.
Thats all im prepared to give out im afraid, if you cant find enjoyment from any of that then a break is certainly needed.
Regards
Craig

I think the truth is actually somewhere in between. In some cases, DM team do knock back quite a lot of things. In other cases, they're quite happy to go along.
Kudos to all those whom rp between levels 1 to 30 btw! I think it was Hort who kept de-levelling to 9th level as he saw no point in going over that. But some of us do want to get to 30 too.
But, I think factions generate the best RP...they forward a plotline.

It doesn't have that much to do with me honestly, just the most recent example but the point isnt about a DM plot..the point is that the power that was supposodely given to the council to create roleplay wasnt really because when giving that power proved even remotely inconvenient it was near instantly revoked in a clearly OOC way.
There are some pretty cool stuff happening at the moment, namely with the Eternal Order. Really, if you want roleplay get associated in some way with the factions...even if you are not a part of them. I wouldn't call it an exception, I would say it was the rule in my experience...sometimes justified other times not. However, let's go along with your theory which can result in some good roleplay admittedly. So alright, let's say you're a wizard, you go exploring and come across some ruins or whatever and begin roleplaying. Now you have about three choices, you can call a DM and roll a lore check or whatever or the DM will give you some sort of clue. THis option requires a DM, and there just are not enough really I guess. The second is that you wing it, you make an educated guess and pretty well metagame the environment which will very likely get you into trouble. Third option is that you just make some vague statement "I shall further investigate back at the library" and there was no real plot progression whatsoever.
All these ideas hinge themselves on the fact that you haven't already been to the area and that the area has something which has an element of intrigue behind it.
I remember once I was in a library, just mucking around reading some game design books. I came across this book about online worlds, and it essentially arbituarily sorted the basic desires of those that play into four categories: Socializers, Optimisers, Explorers and Killers. The way I see it, the cordor crowd are basically socializer type players, the powergamers are basically optimisers. Amia caters very well to the first group, and pretty well to teh second. However, to the other two it kind of lets them down. Character backstory is cool, but its something I can do without being on amia. I personally want to see plot progression, which essentially puts me into the explorer category. I want to see real life issues explored in a fiction setting, I want to see wars etc, chances for the exploration of humanity and morality, or just stuff that is plain cool like a random necromancer attack. Truly, I see a reoccuring theme where the socializer roleplayers are given a huge representation in opposition to all the other types which sucks because they are the most likely to oppose conflict which is neccessary for plot change. So you end up in this stalemate where the DMs want us to make our own plot, but whenever we do is wrong because that plot inevitably involves a crisis of some kind, crisis is due to conflict and that conflict is what the DM team often opposes if only in action rather than belief about how the realms should be.

I think I fall into the category of Explorer too. Out of interest, what's the Killer type player?
Weirdly enough, I'd have to agree with you 100% Wyjjyn. Plots come to a stalemate because people can't seem to handle conflict well and take it OOC. For instance, we can't have a war because the socialisers will get upset.

Any time that you want us, the DMs, to change the world or to promote conflict, always know that you're asking us to piss somebody off, somewhere, so that you don't have to.

Believe me, I don't need someone to take a shot for me. I am perfectly fine with pissing people off, provided the end result is good roleplay. I want characters like Tellos, Dante, Vashen, Darthion, Trent and Budly back. Those guys had stuff going on, they seemed to always be in some fight or ready to enter one. I also would want their ideas listened to, I thought Darthion's idea of the items of power was great...nothing came of it.
I am not saying the socializer-type roleplay is bad, but its really ridiculous to cater to it above all others.
Sound: I guess a Killer would be pvper, probably powerbuild..maybe sorceror..definitely evil. Will have taken hellball.

So what's the solution?
I can understand both sides of the coin but by not doing something, you're equally pissing off those who tend to identify with the Explorer category of roleplay who just get frustrated with the status quo. Especially when we get to create conflict, make it interesting for people but those who hate change/conflict start complaining and getting annoyed.
I guess its a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't...as a DM team at least.

That's what I've always said, sound. The solution is that we take it in the face for you ungrateful bastards. At least that's my personal viewpoint, not necessarily shared by any of my fellow DMs.

To the original poster...
You know what I do? It's odd, but I have a blast doing it. I go everywhere. I talk to everyone, everything. Chickens, Cows, trees, NPC's, myself...everything. It helps I mostly play with a very social, very dink-minded character. But try it.
I also react. if I run into a spawn of goblins, I chop. Sweat. Say "pheew" afterwards.
Hell, onetime a Mylock bellowed at me "YOO WILL DIE NOW CHERRY DA BARD!" right before I killed him. Precious moments....
Lack of stories? Start one. Bearing in mind that Amia isn't the "Amia show, starring me!"
Get another player to be lost someplace dangerous..gather a group to save them!
Start a faction! Send other players on menial tasky missions to gather things and stuff. Information, Slaad tongues..underwear. Whatever.
Join a faction!
Summon an undead in the forest!
Act scared as hell when someone is scary!
Run with scissors!

I completely disagree in regards to Amia being boring.
I've got all of three characters on Amia.
Frey - Lvl 30 - my primary. 99% of my online hours are RP'ing him
Magnarion - Lvl 18 (and he's been lvl18 for min of 3 years)
Serious - Lvl 6 (and he's been level 6 for 2 years)
And I can tell you, I'm never bored on Amia... of course I create my own plots, I don't require the DM's to come up with something and get mad when they don't.
I also involve everyone I can think of.
Eternal Order? Pfffft, old news. It's teh same old same old. Do something DIFFERENT. Try something NEW.
Play a good guy?
Try playing an evil one.
Play a Bard?
Try playing someone who's mute.
The point is it's up to YOU, the player to come up with the plots here on Amia.
And I will strongly disagree with those who say that you can't make a mark on Amia with your PC.
Sure you can - but the reality is ONLY A FEW will ever do it, because that's LIFE.
So if your not "THE ONE" then don't spoil it for others because your jealous. LEARN from them. Talk to them. Find out what they did, and then do it in your own way.
You might not get what you want, but you'll get what you need.
Regards,

No, don't try something new, try something old! I think a clue is stop making a new character each week. If you stick with something, people will remember him/her and be able to include him/her in their plots.

That's also true. While Valkirya was my only PC, I was involved in more things than I could handle. ^^;
I would often get burn downs, but definitely couldn't complain of lack of RP.

Gotta say one thing here.
The whole you can't make a permanent mark on Amia is a load of horse dung.
The only time i complain is because i think the server as big as it is, has far to many soft areas which promote far too much soloing thus far too little RP.
I think the player base spends far to much time wasting energy on complaining that could be better spent creatively contacting DM's AND OTHER PLAYERS WHO AREN'T JUST FRIENDS through PM's and Tells to create roleplay situations. In every factional event i've been involved wih it took weeks of planning, sending tells to DM's and making requests but the EFFORT was well worth it.
In other words, stop being so ****ing lazy.

God I hope not. Easy roleplay is boring as hell.

I wonder how we can e so stagnant, really. We're having 50 people online now at a timeslot where there used to be 25 online half a year ago. That doesn't really suggest we're a boring place.

If you are bored on Amia, you are not doing enough to keep yourself and others amused. Look to yourself, not others to create the fun.

Well, that's one side of the issue.
I do think we (as the management) have been a bit too tight when it comes to player events in the past. However, can't say I will blame the DMs for that. It's a rather lousy task to facilitate player's events when you know that whatever you do you'll be sorry afterwards and you will be the one that has to clean up the mess too. It's not a matter of PvP-freaks vs RP-snobs, btw. Bad vibes are heard at the most unexpected places when people don't get their way.

Amia is what you make it.
You don't have to stand around doing nothing at all while whining in partychat that you're bored.
Because it turns to what you tell yourself, if you're looking to be bored, congratulations you succeeded.
If you want to have fun make impressions on people, go RP, go get involved.
RP is a give/take thing. The more you RP the more people will RP back and, well, I can't say I feel the urge to RP with someone standing in Cordor East who hasnt typed a IC thing for ages.
