Orcs = They're thugs, and seen as barbarians. They're probably lowest on the "OH MY GOD, AHH" totem pole. Still met with animousity though.
Half-Orcs = People are skeptical towards them, but not afraid, since almost all of them (both PC and NPC) take after their human elders.
Orogs = Hated due to their actions and behaviour, simply. They're seen as barbarians that shouldn't be allowed into the city anymore.
Kobolds/Goblins = Annoying little runts that should be tossed out, as far as Cordor is concerned

It pleases me to see you post this WonWon. Grimgor and his boys are trying to flare up the species barriers between the Pink-skins and the monstrous races so it's good to know that the hatred's going both ways.

And whoever tried to tell us that Racism/Speciesism was an evil act... I'm sorry I can't help but laugh at your attempt because the true epitome of "Good" characters in DnD, the Paladins, are the most prejudiced organisations you'll find.

If a Paladin sees an orc, they smite an orc. If they see a giant, they smite a giant. If they see someone breaking the laws, they smite the person breaking the laws. They don't fart around and ask questions, they smite their arses off because it's what they're commanded by oath to do. There's no grey, you're either an orc or you're not.

Honestly we can compare the racism of Amia to the racism in FR or in the real world, but honestly we shouldn't really be trying to completely emulate it.

As far as the real world is concerned, Though racism exists, there are not many countries that would toss you out simply because your race was one or another.

Though FR may have evil>good drow, Amia is not completely FR. It's Amia. And in Amia things are run differently.

But there are some points that need to be made.

1. Racism is an issue in Amia...and it exists. It may not be as RAMPANT as some players would like.....they'll live.

2. There are a lot of Surface Drow...but they are NOT all good. In fact many are considered traitors who are bitter, act bitter, and commit as much evil as any drow still down in Ultrinnan.

3. The idea that some creatures are not racist and do not simply cater to the ideas of those who play racist characters are not degrading the RP. They enhance it.

We are not FR. We do not have as many people as in the FR world to have as much rampant racism, but we do have it.

If you like the amount of racism there is..RP it.
If you don't....RP it.

In closing....RP it.

That's so not arrogant.... ;)

And I feel the need to say it once again, Racism is NOT evil folks. Is it wrong? A lot of times, yes. Sometimes, not really. It might even save your ass. Racism simply is, it's not good, it's not evil. Not inherently anyway.

To me, racism is simply treating someone differently (for good or ill) based solely on their race.

Okay, racism, eh?

I lead a faction that burned the temple in Winya and slaughtered all the priests inside. Yet, I'd bet my next two paychecks that I could get my Ilharess huggled by a Winya Councilor in less than an hour... all without changing who my character is.

The fact that drow are a little too accepted on Amia has been a topic of debate for as long as I've been on these forums and there has never been a resolution for the problem.

Yes, surface drow temper the overall perception of drow.

Yes, we UD drow should probably do a little more to further our own desires.

Yet, I can say from experience that there are a few things that turn us UD drow off from coming to the surface and messing with you surface players more than we do. I don't point any fingers or in anyway am I making generalities about surface PC's. This is strictly from my experience.

Some PC's love to run across a drow, just to attempt to PvP them. They bully you for a fight, meta-gaming who you are behind your layers of armor and whatnot, saying that you smell like the Underdark or something. Then, if/when they get beat they start a OOC rant about how you didn't follow all the rules of PvP when they were the ones starting the fight. The "random" dozen or so epics that happen across the place you're at just a few minutes after your altercation with another PC falls into this category, too.

The two main reasons drow raid the surface on Amia is for either slaves or sacrifices. This becomes a problem for several reasons. 1.) It really sucks to be a priestess and have the person you sacrificed just a few hours ago show up again. 2.) Due to the very strict rules on slaves in the UD, not too many people are willing to have their characters turned into slaves anymore.

The first reason is completely understandable, nobody can expect for another person to permakill their character just because they happened to get caught and sac'd by a drow.

The second reason makes sense too. The DM's are perfectly within reason to have the restrictions in place.

A third reason to toss into the mix is this: We are all real people and we all have some form of care for the others we RP with having fun playing this game, too. This, at least for me, tempers some of the things that my character would do.

You combine all three of these things together and you get a picture that makes it a little difficult to for us drowsie PC's to live up to.

As for Xante's comments. I don't think we've ever RP'd with each other, but if we do, make sure to let me know that you really want to see an evil drow and I'll be more than happy to show you just why drow are supposed to be both hated and despised. Not to mention the real reasons why racial locks were placed on Winya and Cordor.

I'll take that bet, do you earn much?

You clearly have never roleplayed with any of our councilors.

Samantha's very racist... specist.. however you wanna say it. She's also seen as "crazy" by the much more so crazy people on Amia...... her life is hard.

Li'thani is hardly racist at all... but is very, very suspicious. Funnily enough, she's more suspicious of her own race than others... but yeah. Yoss is right. It gets boring after his post. People are much too concerned about modern media to actually delve into a fully hardcore RP environment.

But I will say, once, Estara started a horribly racist (at least in Cordor's terms) banning of drow. Haha! It worked. Bet ya'll didn't know that was MY doing! Bwa ha ha. And now Samantha is suffering the consequences of that first banning by being horrible shunned herself. Poor girl.

Anyway, yeah, I love racism. Hate my characters for what they are. I won't be upset! I only get upset when you hate my characters b/c you hate me OOCly.. I could care less if you hate my characters for their pointy ears or claws.

Oh, and if you don't wanna be racist..... at least have the common sense to realize loving an orc might classify you as a FREAK. And try to keep it on the down-low. Y'know? Loving orcs should.. well.. not be normal. Go Galenson.

I think racism/speciesim etc is good for the server. That is, it creates conflict and with conflict, you have story. With story, you can play a role. I'm sick of people telling me how nice tieflings really are. I'm sick of people telling me I should hug all surface drow or orogs and treating my characters as the evil ones when they do all they can to avoid said species or send them back into their holes.

I HATE racism in real life, but I am not my characters. One of my characters kills all life as a sacrifice to her god, wherever and whenever possible. All those not of her race are either ripe for conversion or are prey. She's playing up to her racial ideal by being the most xenophobic thing around. She makes most surface Drow look like paladins.

Drow, should be feared and hated by everyone and sundry on the surface. The fact that there are more surface Drow than Underdark Drow just shows there's something wrong with the current server culture. Same goes for the other Underdark races. Its the only thing that bugs me on this server, that Underdark Races don't stay mostly in the UD and come up to raid the surface from time to time. The body count for time spent on the surface to time spent underground for these races is...greatly skewed in favour of the surface. Its a perpetual cycle. I get sick of sitting in Underport and no one goes there, because all the duergar, drow, svirfneblins, orogs etc are in Cordor having crumpets and tea. The cycle continues and ruins any real RP going on down below ground, leaving Ultrinnan as the only exception.

Anyhow, rant over. ;)

Okay here's my list of things which make me, as a player of drow, utterly sick and tired of bothering with the surface.

1) Whinging. *see threead above. All of it.*

2) Mystery PvP and PvP Fanatics who just hafta kill drows at any cost no matter how dodgy ICly... *see ainjyll's post*

3) People wanting to hug my evil drow... YOU DIE!

4) People generally just not being reasonable even if there character would be. I'll give an example of a reasonable character with a reasonable player.

Malice - evil little conniving bitch that she was, once had to do a chore to enter house Qos'Yutsu. The chore? Meet and describe three eilistraeens. So, she goes up.. RP's with a few, under a false name and gets as far as two. A bit stuck for a third, she asked around Cordor (before the lame gates - but thats a rant for another day) and found someone to take her to the shrine...

...Next thing I know, Malice is drinking blood tea with Ravena(!) *and if you don't know who that is... well go and learn some server history* chit chattering about idle things... Until Ravena asks her why she's really here... things get so cold in the room for an instant as the young yath scrambles for an answer. So what does she do?

She just tells her why. The response? "Ah well. Pass my regards to Veh'dra.."

Class. >.>

PS. Stop beating the dead horse

Know what's odd? That's exactly why most surfacers don't bother with the Underdark! Isn't that amusing, and great food for thought? :D

Playing a Drow male can be a very humbling experience. Not saying that you fit into the categories you mentioned, but the general ambience is usually quite badly perceived when you only got the girl characters.

The problem is, not everyone is racist because a lot of people have spent time with those ‘loveable’ Ellistraeens and found them to be pretty nice. As a result of this, there is less prejudice towards surface drow as a whole. However if we want more discrimination against drow, were going to need people to start fearing them again. They are not really feared, since Amia is the server, where any drow raid on the surface is going to get stomped on by an immediately alerted army of epic level characters, who are all anxious to actually go out and stabbing things other then hang around in same damn city square for the next few hours. As a result, we don’t have any drow going out there, burning down farms and curb-stomping kittens.

This leads to no one hearing bad things about drow, or seeing them too often for that matter. With the Ellistraeen Shrine, there is a good deal of positive relations, presumably resulting in a reduction of prejudice.

Well, that’s my fancy explanation anyway.

Sure, but it applies to everything and everyone besides just Drow.

Paladins are seen as worse than Blackguards because of intolerance.

I know I have trouble playing my Lolthite Male, so much so he's not exactly my favourite character, dispite his RP potential being very high, the feeling that you can be bossed around, insulted and possiably even put to death, by the whim of a higher ranking female who may be in Thundermonth, is pretty daunting.

That's the fun. If you don't enjoy walking the fine line of Drow society, don't make a Drow. Sadly, too many people don't follow this advice.

If people want to play drow-lovers, I say let them. It makes it that much easier to stab them in the back later. The only thing I can say about it is this; don't all of the sudden stop huggling drow when you notice Tinnerai, Do'Veldran, Kil'ani or Xull'd'Vharcan tacked on to that little green name above a character's head. I know that should be common sense, but it never hurts to remind people.

I've noticed a lot more racist reactions to my surface drow lately. That is very nice, but it's also nice that others consider her harmless based on her behaviour. Nice to receive a variety of reactions, not just acceptance but not only racism, either.

its not that hard just a matter of knowing when to boil over and when not to. All one has to do is kiss enough ass until they icly get higher in rank and gather more power. They will always be second class citizens but they also wont half to take nearly as much crap from people as most seem to think they do.

I'm sure it sucks to play an openly evil character or one with advanced prejudice against them but, uh, you know what's worse? Playing an outwardly good character who people hate because he or she actually has the gall to--gasp!--react negatively towards openly hostile or dangerous races like anyone else in the Realms would.

Save puppies, control-burn some orphanages, and pee on jellyfish stings all you like, but God forbid a character looks at a huggie drow or giggling tiefling strangely.

Amen to that. Apparently, having a 'normal' Realmsian outlook on such is mortal sin.

Racism is one of the most important factors to any kind of character in a fantasy world. It is the widest, and most commonly used factor to determine a character's personality, and their behaviors. Racism is as big as religions in a fantasy world, and it is up to players to keep standards held high if they are looking for a character with advanced dynamics.

Feel free to RP racism, I know I do. Orcs literally rip people to shreds and feast on them. Drow place people through horrific, unrelenting torture sessions. Races are not something to be taken lightly, therefore you can have some racism. I see a lot of defense against any kind of 'monstrous' race because people don't want other people generalizing against others. There are several similarities between the actions of the people playing Amia, and that of modern day America, where everyone is free/fair and slavery is only in far off lands.

Racism RP is completely different then what we have in our own world here today. Right now, we are all humans, with different color skin, so what, different skin. In a fantasy world like Amia, you have the term 'race' which describes something utterly different. Humans with humans, elves with elves, dwarves with dwarves. It is different indeed.

Something about drow. There is like a good drow deity scrambling about, so I wouldn't call all drow evil, but that is certainly not an assumption you should try pulling at a first glance. After all, the base drow society is chaotic evil (the worst kind you can have). Something I can imagine happening is most drow in Cordor are perfectly allowed to go back underground to their own little drow world. This makes them capable of visiting all fronts of Amia. So in effect, they could be a choatic good alignment or something, but on double duty, they go back underground in a chaotic evil setting, with their chaotic good alignment. (I've not confirmed it or anything, maybe someone else could). Certainly not all drow, but some taking advantage of the fact that people won't kill them on sight.

but its getting to the point where its just rediculous.

MOST of the time, drow are huggled and cuddled on the surface, provided they are not Lolthite. Also, many seem to DEFEND the drow, and other widely hated races.

Thanks for posting this. I completely agree with it, and for my characters which have a completely defined fabric of RP to them, they can't react the way they normally would, because if they would, they'd probably be butchered. Ridiculous? I believe so.

Huggled and cuddled? Damn, lol. I truly do LOL at that. In return for that, I do act like a complete moron rampaging through the city. My standard of RP for Amia is truly lower than it is on other servers because of several factors.

Quote:
"You're all doing it wrong"

For the dude who said that, and other who agree with him: I don't believe the poster of the thread had intentions of telling people to RP, just giving a few obvious, as well as noticeable faults about drow. There were no names mentioned or anything like that singling people out telling them they don't know how to RP and to correct it. Besides that, I have to agree with your statement. I see it in a lot of places, and a response to that is this:

Characters not following guidelines are characters without some good beef put into them. In other words, there are plenty of things with some basic requirements that need to be obeyed, and an example would be drow alignment, the way teiflings are RPed, and many more things such as the classes that people play. Without solid RP structures, RP can get pretty cruddy. So the 'you're doing it wrong' remark is for the players themselves to dictate on their own characters.

Quote:
a third try. FR is not real life. you cannot make comparisons.

For this dude: FR is not RL, your right about that, but it is a fantasy world. Amia and FR are different things entirely, but without FR, Amia probably wouldn't be here along with a lot of other servers/ideas of fantasy worlds in general. FR is a guideline for people to follow, just like guidelines most people follow to make their own NWN servers. It is a guideline for characters, deities, and many other things. Now, Amia is affected by RL decisions to RP hugging your own personal lesbian drow level 30 spellcaster that stands in broad daylight. RL impulses will affect the way things are played out to be. Take note of the NWN chat rooms when Amia is down. I see people there basically doing things they do IG. Example being the infamous *poke* emote. Is there a difference between RL and Amia's RP? Sure, but I am forced to say that I am not seeing the dividing line. Maybe in the future I'll see it, but certainly not right now.

Drow fall into evil races. Let's talk about evil. Evil "can" be used as a word to describe actions performed by another party. These actions can be assumed, or they can be witnessed. Another factor to take into effect when judging a race is what the race is. Certain races are inclined to perform evil. They don't have to be raised in a 'good human family', they are born evil, and they have a natural instinct to perform evil. There are many races like this, and it is quite evident that most people take into accord that you don't "judge a book by its cover". A drow raised in a human family? I believe the drow would take the opportunity it could to slaughter the human parents. Does that mean it would? No guarantees.

Quote:
Most Drow on the surface are Good

Hehe. On the surface? That is interesting, because drow are born with a natural darkvision with a negative reaction to light. According to another player that just happens to be my a homie, even the famous Drizzt had trouble dealing with sunlight after 60 years of practice. At Drizzt's birth, apparently a candle was held up to him because he had purple eyes or something like that. Drizzt's reaction for crying was a little later than the other drow babies because he was born different. Drizzt's father was one of a kind, his view in kindness was 'killing to survive'. Another thing on drow lolthites is that every third son is to be slaughtered as a sacrifice to Lolth. So more about drow on the surface? I'm told that they are exiles from the underdark, criminals that were caught, and things like that. The point being that drow on the surface are more likely to be evil than good.

I liek this thread. :)

I get a kick out of people hating Torin for being bigoted/whatever you want to call it.

It's funny. >.>

I actually think it's OK if racists get called out, but it should be like... for a short moment, and then move on to different things. Sometimes the whole course of RP gets disrupted as people begin the bigot/racist/liberal/hugger debate. Well, not only sometimes but oftentimes. It's nice for a moment but gets old.

meh, what is getting old is the lesbian drow/teifling 'huggling' each other right next to the temple of waukeen and calling people 'meanies' for making any remark about getting rid of evil creatures.

but hey, maybe that is new, I wouldn't know. I've only played for a few weeks.

i find it highly amusing that when the idea of racism comes up people get into such an uproar over it?

quit bringing the ooc ideals of lets everyone get along into the game. They have no place here. Nothing wrong with getting along as players, but everyone should expect that people will not get along icly.

when in regards to discussing in character reactions mind you, not the actual idea of it. People get upset when their characters get judged based upon the idea of the race they are playing, be it drow, elf, orc etc. I figured most would be intelligent enough to see what i was referring to.

and hells man its the weekend, naturally im tanked right now

People should just learn not to trust even a good drow. Not until they've been proven harmless.

And that's why you beat good Drow. For, Eilistraeens are like dogs, we pet them, play with them, allow off the leash for a while to run free and play with the other dogs. But when it comes down to it, by the end of the day they must be leashed, and scolded for their wrongs. It's the only way they'll learn. Good dog, yes.

truer words have not been spoken..

and as for elves and dwarves...im pretty sure thier panteons are allied and that there are no racial hatred between them..just the normal "i dont like you" hatred
