Ahead three dwarves and a human worked in front of a half finished wall; the human slouched over in the tight fitting area attempting to keep from stepping in the foul smelling water running though the small tunnel. The dwarves however went about their work, standing knee deep in the water without complaint, toiling at the wall, laying down cement. The human held a lantern up to the unfinished wall, “How long are y’all going to be” He enquired, “it smells like a bloody kobo.” A Dwarf, annoyed with the interruption, turned his ruddy face to the human, “It’all be done when it be gettin’ done boyo, so hold that light still I wan ta be outa ‘ere as much as ye do, but I aint leavin’ a job unfinished. Now, ye shut da hells up ‘er I’ll shut ye ta hells up.” The human grumbled but said no more.

Unbeknownst to the workers another figure watched them in that tunnel.

The human’s skin tingled and he looked about perturbed, “Look, can’t we come back, I got the heebie-jeebies, it’s like somethin’ bads goin’ to be happennen, you know?” The silent figure watched, normally this would be a simple exercise, rush in and overwhelm the crew before they realized what struck. However, its patron had explicitly said, “accident,” it examined the situation, and it wondered, what could go wrong in a cramped tunnel under-construction that didn’t harm said tunnel? The other dwarf turned to the human seriously, “Oy, lad, I be knowin jus’ what ye mean,” the three grew silent to listen to the speaker, ceasing work, “it be like dis time a bit ago, I be in Cordor in da second floor ah da Nomad, I be getting this very same feelin. Ye’ see, I was wit yer muther and that’s about da time she went and gave me sores, I just new sumtin was wrong ‘bout ‘er!” The dwarves roared with laughter; the human was not amused, the work continued.

The creature stalked forward, a plan already germinating in its mind. Creeping above their heads from behind it crept slowly forward, silently, even though it could have done it in a full plate given the amount of noise coming from the workers. Directly above the dwarves not a foot from the human it yanked a brick from the wall, a small speck of dust fell from the ceiling onto the dwarves’ head. Whipping it off the dwarf peered up at two flashing red eyes. He did not have time to scream as the creature descended on him, bringing the brick down over his head, caving the dwarves’ skull in. In the same motion it fell on the other dwarf, swinging its foot around to catch the human above the temple, crushing the side of his head. The creatures forced the final dwarf beneath him under the water, careful not to pierce his skin with its claws.

The bubbles ceased to rise and the body stopped struggling.

Dragging the corpses easily the creature brings them down the tunnel, it carefully kept the bodies in the water to keep the blood from showing an overt trail to the site of death. Reaching up it yanks several more bricks down from the wall and places them around the deceased, and, almost as an afterthought, giving the drowned dwarf a good whap with the flat of its palm, leading to a satisfying crack of the skull.

The creature then returned to the sight and began to brick in the wall at an incredible speed. Though with only trace amounts of cement so that a strong push would cave it all in. It returned to report completion.

Three days later the corpses were found and a tunnel two hundred feet away from where they died; the tunnel was reinforced by the Kohlingen build crews. A pension was sent to their family as part of the contract for dying on the job.

"It happened so fast... The explosions... So many dead..."

The Judicar sits on his throne, recieving a document stating casualties...

"So many dead," "All dead or injured."

A guard enters

"Sir! We... Have more problems."

"What? Sir Guard"

"The Earl, he... The area is blighted. We have no food, our animals are dead."

"I see... The manor then?"

"Yes sir"

The Jucidicar puts his face in his hands and sighs a great sigh.

Thilidar walks around aidding the injured and probably helping to burry the dead after the large battle. He shakes his head and pray to The Doombringer every time he saves another injured man or put another fire. "Those who do good recieve good" He tells himself with a sigh and lean back on the top hill of the manor at one of his patrols, wondering if asking Earl for tea again would be such a good idea.

"They attacked, killed and injured. We attacked back killed and injured"

Says Thilidar to himself as he clears the Manor himself after things begin to calm down... Slaying everyone until he catches Earl and punches his dead body mercilessly until it fades, only to "live" once more later on.

Last, he walks off to the Main Hall, looking at where the portal stood- he stares at it hard and sigh.

"Where are those mages when you need him?"

As much as he could, that's what he did... A tainted soul wishing nothing but justice on those who prevoke a Doombringer fist's revenge.

Daniel tried purifying the portal at the City Hall. It took some time, but eventually it disappeared. An archer helped him, but he forgot to ask his name.

Something had stirred up the undeath at the Manor. Some of the Defenders and adventurers were guessing (probably wild guesses, since there was not apparent proof), that Tarkuul had something to do with it. While Kohlingen was a Holy City, Tarkuul was an Unholy one. He wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

But he was more worried about the many innocent lives lost and kept praying and purifying the places he passed by, hoping none of those lost souls would feed the masterbrain or that their bodies wouldn't rise as undeath.

The Everguard and the Kohlingen guard seemed to be more worried about protecting the city and the Justicar than the people. He couldn't blame them. After all, it was the Defenders' job to protect the people. That was what the oath said, right?

And, yet... neither of the Defenders paid heed to his words of protecting the people. Now they were all gone. He was ashamed to carry his title, now that he failed.

Alone, after all the mess was reasonably sorted you, he went to the pond to pray for guidance, forgiveness and to that the deities of those poor innocent souls would come and snatch them before evil got their hands on them.

Torin arrived with the rest of the Salandrans, and did the "Salandran thing" as directed by the priestesses and officials of Kohlingen, healing, aiding the injured where needed. Easily picked out of the Salandrans by his token silver and blue armor (only set apart by a red and white sash the Salandrans made him wear when he was "officially" in their ranks), he moved from place to place, offering his skills where he was required.

~~~
Reinard sat quietly in the Nexus Hills, just west of Kohlingen, on top of a cliff. Occassionally a beastman patrolling would notice him, and Reinard would send his wraith to deal with the nuisance while he studied the city while it was ravaged. The devestation only served to cement in his mind even more the strength of undeath, even over the so called Bane of Undeath: clerics and paladins.
When the fight was over, Reinard cast an invisibility spell, and casually walked away west, towards the coast, making his way back to Tarkuul.
so it seems i missed everything, after hearing about the devastation Defender Guy D' Jocelyn went out to inspect the damage, finding the place ruined. On his wanderings just outside the city found the Stoneyface and Frey. Joining up with them they went up into the manor searching for evidence or reason behind the attack on the holy city, so many dead, so many corpses lying around the manor one room alone had at least 20 corpses piled under various hemp sacks the smell was putrid. they continued throughout the manor smiting the undead that they came across. On several corpses were found items that adventurers carry were found and are being kept for investigation. o0(all this death and destruction for what)0o
such a waste of life.
Aurora Starlight, Grand Master of the Defenders of Kohlingen stands and surveys the devastation. His normally lavender eyes red with anger as the wind blows the smell of smoke into his face.
With one hand he fiddled with the holy symbol that hung from a chain around his neck, praying for guidance to lead him to those responsible for this tradegy, Justice would not be soon in coming. His other hand rested on the hilt of his sword, reflecting this. Sighing he turns and makes his way back to the city, helping with the Injured and giving (To him) small amounts of gold to the refugees who because of the attack, needed to start again.
Justice will be done....
The day started as any normal day would for Metalien, he rose late in the afternoon and had 'breakfast' as usual.
"Ah, it's good to be back" he thought as he opened the window to let the sweet smell of the City he has called home for many years, Winya Ravana, not just any city, the only city that he has ever felt could compare to his home town.
Stepping out of the portal in the Temple of Waukeen he looked around for a bit and double checked the buckles on his armour before exiting the temple door and stepping out into Cordor.
Habit more than anything kept him standing in the same place he had stood when on Guard duty, nothing more than the security of the same routine.
Looking around it dawned on him.. "Something isn't right" People were running around like headless Chickens, young miss Sina Averest, the Salandran Cleric he had so cruely killed when he was in the service of Bane was running around gathering people, asking for help. "If you are what you say you are, Kohlingen needs you" was all she said to him as she ran up to him with a look of uncertainty on her face.
"I shall go on straight away" Metalien replied before running to the Ferry to Kohlingen, all the way casting spells upon himself to protect from whatever he might find.
Reaching the ferry he noticed Miss Averest already there, "Who is attacking Kholingen?" Metalien asked.
"We don't know, possibly Tarkuul" Was all he got as she departed on the boat.
Grimacing Metalien payed the Boat Captain and departed for Kohlingen.
Upon arrival the first thing that he noticed was the smell of burning and death, "This can't be good" he thought to himself as he ran into the city looking for people to help.
He almost stumbled over the group of people, some he knew, some he didn't, all of them angry and scared.
"What is going on ?" he asked the group, not realy expecting an answer, a few people regarded him for a moment then noticed his faithful Efreeti, Tormak.
"What is that doing here?" Defender Daniel asked, "It is mine, you need help and he and I are here to help" Metalien replied.
A short discussion about the Efreeti ensued for a while before people relaxed a little to it's presense and everyone prepared for the next wave of attacks.
Half running half being pushed he followed the group to the gate where they found and fought off a wave of undead, most likely form the Manor outside of Kohlingen. Wave aupon wave of them came and were cut down before the attacks finaly ceased.
"Where are they coming from ?" a worried voice could be heard, though the owner Metalien never knew or cared to know, he had bigger things to deal with, healing the wounded and raising the dead.
Once the dead were raised and the injured tended to it was mutual agreed by all that they should check the West of Kohlingen for any further attacks.
Making his way through the gates an uneasy feeling started to come over Metalien, he was sensing something, something familiar, an aura he had hoped never to encounter again, least of all in the City of Kohlingen.
More undead, more fighting, more wounded to tend.. "Will they ever stop coming?" Metalien kept thinking to himself.
"To the Manor!" someone mentioned, though Metalien yet again never caught the name nor recognised the voice.
Following the crowd to the bridge the first person that caught Metalien's eyes was Nimien, her beauty had haunted him for months, since leaving the Banites she was still in his mind, how many times he had wished they had met in another place and time he could not count, but there she was, Stoney, Gurth, Shanna, Trent.. all ex colleagues and friends of Metalien's.. all now deadly foes.
"Well well, look what we have here ?" Metalien heard himself saying, though he wished he hadn't almost straight away...
"Oh, it's you" Nimien sneered at him. "Metalien..." Gurth said, with an air of utter dislike.
By now Metalien was all out of spells to protect and heal, uncertaintly was welling up inside of him, should he attack or hear them out, he could not decide, but before he could, another wave of undead fell upon the group that had gathered at the bridge, Defender of Kohlingen and citizen's of Tarkuul alike suddenly became momentary allies as the undead fell upon them all.
Wave upon wave of undead came and were killed, again.
Someone said something though Metalien didn't hear what they said, all he heard was Nimien's voice, swet to the ears like honey to the tongue...
"Ask the ex Banite" was all he heard Nimien say, though in answer to what he didn't catch. "Who is an ex Banite ?" he heard a voice ask, "I am" he heard himself reply, though why he dared openly admit it, he never knew.
He never got the question asked, nor did he answer, all he could think about was how he could get out of this day alive.
Somehow, though he wasn't sure how, he found himself a short while later arguing with Defender Trin Arneman "We had them all, why did we let them live?" Metalien half asked, half shouted at her.
"We had survivors to find, Metalien" Came the calm and peaceful reply from Trin, though Metalien had only know her and her husband Aurora a short while, he found himself very fond of them both and often wished that things had been different so he could have joined thier ranks.
A few more hours passed, Metalien and all the others present, Defenders, Adventurers and Citizens of Kholingen alike, all a band of brothers and sisters this one day, they all searched and recovered injured and dead alike, though sadly the dead seemed to outnumber the survivors.
"Such a terrible waste of lives, war is hell..." Metalien repeated to himself over and over again that day.
The images of the wounded and dying, dead and survivors will never leave his mind, that he knows.
"Well, time to chose a side" he thought to himself, "Time to openly declare my alliegance to Kholingen, time to make a stand, time to put words into action" He sadly thought to himself as he started to mentaly prepare himself for a long drawn out campaing of open warfare, who shall stand and who shall fall only time will tell, but whatever happens, Metalien will be there, with the Defenders and Citizens of Kohlingen and surrounding cities. To the end.
the initial explosions were huge, so large that the bells in winya ravana rang pure. stoneyface looked toward the "holy" city of kohlingen, his short time home upon arriving here in amia. the second explosion nearly knocked him off his feet, and made him miss a rather diffucult shot at the archery range.
the ruby given to him from lord frey glowed fiercely in his pouch like a dying ember in a campfire. he was being summoned. under the protection of his many bardic spells and invisibilty, stoneyface grouped together with his master and allies from tarkuul.
"it appears that kohlingen is under attack from undead forces." lord frey commented. "as a pre-eminate masters of the undead arts we must offer aid to the defenders in their time if need. we may be able to help."
the group massed below the manor house of lord manfreid. being insane with power from his troubled dealings with the necronomicon, manfreid had obviously lost his tenuious grip on whatever reality he had and started pouring his undead minions out of the manor and into the kohlingen proper. the group from tarkuul stood in stunned silence hidden by their invisibility spells at the bridge. some quick scouting determined that there was not just a few undead, but indeed and army of raging maniacal undead, ravaging, burning...eating. the vision was horrible...
stoneyface stood in stunned shock. he knew they could not attack. any attack would instantly make them a target of the horde of bones and flesh that were killing everything in sight. stoneyface made a quick scout all the way to the west gate of kohlingen. there were no defenders in sight. the west gate had been completely and utterly destoyed. much of kohlingen proper was fine with only minor damage and burning, but the outskirts...were aflame....
entire farms were gone. crops burnt. livestock littered the fields, most had been knawed upon by the ravaging undead horde. the smell of burning flesh was overpowering. alarm bells could be heard from all the way to cordor.
stoneyface had seen the destruction of cordor and the attacks by the horde there. this was by far more atrocious. at least the horde had reason, order to their chaos. this was randomness. this was discord. chaos himself seemed to have descended upon kohlingen for a deadly dance of wholesale slaughter. the sight was too much to bear and he returned to the group of would be rescuers.
regrouping at the bridge, no words were needed amongst the group, they had all taken a peek. not even those familiar with the undead as servants could believe their eyes. this was indeed the day kohlingen was crippled and it took an insane lord manfreid to pull it off. the ground leading out of the manor was torn up like some insane farmer had taken the impliments of farming to the land. a wide swath of land lead to kohlingen like a line on a map. a huge hole in the protective wall of kohlingen proper was the undead entryway to the city. they were pouring into the city like ants on the hunt. in the distance the sounds of battle and screaming could readily be heard. the sound of animals, and citizens tore at the very heart of his elvish nature. finally some defenders were making their way slowly out of the dying city. heroicly beating back the undead mob, they were slowly taking back kohlingen from the brink of utter destruction.
still under the protection of invisibilty stoneyface was keeping an eye on the situation. cries of battle rang. weapons sang and rattled. he could hear wild accusations from some of the defenders and the other defending kohlingen.
"it must be tarkuul!" "they have attacked us!" finally, "to the manor!" and unknown voice cried out. back across the bridge stoneyface ran.
without even a word of warning able to cross his lips the large group of defenders crossed the bridge in their fury to reach the manor and came to shocked and complete stop at the feet of the tarkuul group.
"Well well, look what we have here ?" was heard from the ex-tarkuul guard metalien.
the two groups confronted each other and accusations flew at the tarkuul group. lord frey quickly explained their presence and their offer of help. it was obvious that the kohlingen defenders, in their bloodlust, would like nothing more than to wipe out the tarkuul group out of hand. reasoning with them was very difficult.
the undead came pouring upon them from the hillside ending the hasty negotiations, the manor still had some army left. side by side the defenders and the tarkuulians fought as uneasy allies in a frenzied fight for their very lives. wraiths, mohrgs, skeletons, and zombies all made their way at the battling group. many undead were slain and injuries taken. healing spells flew along side hellballs and icestorms. the insane lord manfreid himself finally descended the hill to attack the group. for a tense hour it seemed the battle raged but he was finally subdued and banished back to the manor and to his eternal haunting. finally the tide of undead ceased flowing the the group were left staring at each other unable to believe the circumstances that made them fight together as one.
the defenders had finally had enough and ordered the tarkuulians to leave the area as they "investigated" the cause of the attack and they proceeded to storm the mansion. their mission was clear, they intended to annialate every undead in or around the manor. again they ordered the tarkuul contingent to leave. frey again explained that the risen city of tarkuul was offering aid and would help investigate the matter once hostilites had ceased and the tempers of the defenders had calmed.
at that the group from tarkuul retreated back the the safety of tarkuul where the undead are controlled and serve the people and not destroy. there was time enough later to go back and investigate. perhaps they would be able to help the defenders determine the cause of this outrage. for now the dead needed tending to. the undead needed cleaned up and the land needed cleansing. so much devestation. the city of kohlingen was in serious trouble. stoneyface and frey vowed then to return later to investigate.
for the time being, kohlingen suffered it's wounds and began the long process of recovery...
