I would like to start by saying that I am by no means telling anyone how to RP. This is more of a question and personal observation. I have noticed that many of the temples/ factions with leadership positions are currently held by somewhat inactive characters. I will not say players, as quite a few of them are around, they simply never get on said characters anymore. This creates a dillema for me because I often have musings of ambitious RP, but don't want to impede on pending/ pre existing plot lines. I would give specific examples, but I made that mistake before and would prefer not to alienate people I consider friends. My way of thinking is that if its a position that has to be put to a vote by other inactive characters, we are simply creating a problem. Winya, Runty town, Bendir, The Grove, Wiltun and Fort Summer...all safe. Hell even Belenoth is held down by one lonely trooper and he is up/down there generating all sorts of interesting RP if you have the inclination to find out. I'm talking about the Dead Zones here. Can we get a list of positions that need to filled? Also, as a courtesy, could players who get on less than once a month do the rest of us a solid and publicly vacate said positions so others can get a shot? If I'm wrong here, let me know, but otherwisr, I see tons of players who could have opportunities and give certain temples and the like a real presence on Amia. Game On.

I was rather hoping you were making a post suggesting people be allowed to take the Leadership Feat, and thus gain a reason to take some charisma mechanically, changing the power build game just a little and making it a little harder to get super high stats and cool stuff.
But to your actual post I will say a resounding: Screw the establishment. RP anyway, be ambitious, steal people's jobs. If a player isn't around to occupy a leadership position for a long period of time they have no place holding that seat and they've basically allowed their faction/area to be vacant. I realize that sounds cold but if someone is no longer playing time cannot stop for their benefit, and the world must keep turning in order for us to continue to enjoy this module.
Leadership must change hands in order to keep a dynamic setting just that, dynamic and ever changing.
And I also fully advocate that PC leadership rolls be filled by NPCs in absence of such player characters to allow for NPCs that can generate RP.

I hear what the op is saying. We have factions that their leaders are missing, part of why I personally have left factions and for the most part eschew joining one even now. I think what they want is to shake things up a bit, and remove these inactive people from these positions. I can think of one right off that hasn't been around in months, but I know there are more. A few factions have taken it upon themselves to fix the issue, some others can't, or won't. Then, there are some factions that became stagnant as a result. Just would be nice to see active peeps taking over.
My 2 cents.

I can say in my position it's been pretty annoying to be on the other side of things. Life happens and all that, so don't get me wrong I'm not upset with anyone or anything like that. I currently play the Ul'ath'tallar of Nec'perya, however we died out after a long period of inactivity on the part of our DM (no fault of his, RL comes first!), to the point I was the last person lingering around. There comes a point when you can't do anything on your own and posting on the forums just gets tedious. However I have always maintained to the drow players that if you need me at any time I love to get PMed to get IG for stuff. I'm actually working on making the time to bring her back to get involved with L'Obsul, and am going to try and get in touch with the drow players I have on Skype to see if we can get things kicked off again (to benefit both Nec'perya and L'obsul).
Sometimes a leader just needs a nudge, but it all depends on the situation. The one in Nec'perya is tricky just because we're totally inactive and trying to build up a city with just yourself is almost impossible (and boring to say that least). I'm probably going to, after I secure some DM and player aid, get a post back up about Nec'perya to try and spark some interest again. I'm not really a faction leader (as we have no faction), but I'm sort of a de facto one? It's weird, but hey I'll work with what I have.

Yeah if someone is "squatting" in a position of leadership, only logging on once in a blue moon so it can be verified they still exist, I'm 99% sure the DM's would back a coup or whatever it is you're trying to do. Hell, I don't think the biggest factions on the server are even player run, it's either Jarl or the Voice or a committee or whatever Cordor is, so talk to them. And if it's a player faction, just go take over if nobody is consistently around. It's a role play game. Sometimes you gotta be aggressive.

Once I created a character who was meant to be member of a faction, who fit there almost perfectly.... Then I waited 4 months for a player to log in (I didn't meet him/her) and I just gave up. So for me, that's the reason to not play in a faction even tho I'd love to.

Somewhat related, I'm curious what steps DMs expect to be taken from someone wishing to fulfill a NPC's spot in say a settlement. I understand it can be different depending on the settlement/faction, but both times I tried my hand at it, I recall feeling like I was told "I hadn't done enough," yet without being told exactly what I needed to do to get there.
On topic, I've often seen players complain about leadership being missing. My suggestion was the same one that was told to me in my real life dealings with organizations: delegation. If So-and-so is not here, George is in charge. If he is not here, Jimmy calls the shots. Never have your organization so dependent upon one person that if they are not there, the entire group cannot function. You don't need a copy of Robert's Rules of Order to know that. Quite simply, have a chain of command. If Lieutenant makes a call or decision that the Captain doesn't agree with, then Captain can take that up with him if and when he comes back. But at least the group is able to move at all in the Captain's absence.
What I'm saying is, I don't think keeping factions from growing stagnant is something we should expect our DMs to help with. Not because it's something they shouldn't have to help you with, but because ideally, you don't need their help for anything internal. If someone isn't doing their job, your PC is free to call them out. To suggest reforms. Or mutiny. Let it be messy. Let it be violent. Have two popes, split Byzantium, the story will be better for it. My PC led a faction back in the day, and in his absence, some of his students started their own group. While I was sad that it had to happen, because I was gone due to RL happenings, the occurrence of schism and legacy and evolution certainly made for an awesome story. Maybe the Honorable Serpent would still be around had he given some standing orders for his absence, but that was not the type of person he was, and so the story did not progress that way. *shrug* Such is RP.

I agree, however, that REQUIRES said leader to actually delegate, not just say they do. That's been my personal experience, but... much has changed since then.

It is always the members'(and therefore the players') prerogative to vote with their feet. If the head honcho comes back and people have moved on without him as a group, he's got no recourse other than to go along. Or maybe find loyalist supporters and attempt to regain power. His authority, like most authority, comes from nothing but what other people are willing to allow him, what he can convince others to back him up on, or what he can physically beat others into accepting. And while the return of the king is always a cool story, so is the bloody civil war lead by loyalists, eventually ending in a coup and the schism of the group. Granted, from my general experience as an observer, players tend to take faction RP way too personal to ever actually enjoy it for what it could be. Empires rise, empires fall, your hand in either effort and the story you make of it being much more important than the actual survival of the fictional organization. People tend to allow IC hurt feelings to spill over into OoC, which makes about as much sense as being personally mad at J.K. Rowling for having Snape off Dumbledore or G. R. R. Martin for killing [insert literally anyone you ever liked from ASoIaF].

In my opinion, creating official factions is a bit too difficult on Amia. That is part of this problem. The other part of the problem, welp.

Could it be that we've outgrown the whole "official faction" thing in general? It seems to put so much more added stress on the thing. Granted, there are some benefits like sub-forums and having your information easily grab-able by a DM, but with fewer players and less actual members per faction, I'm wondering if we don't need to take some of the rigor out of it.
Get a party. Buy PC housing. Talk to an NPC. Congratulations, you're a faction. Given the turnover rate in how factions rise up today and are dead tomorrow, I don't see why a more non-official approach isn't the norm. Maybe it's the connotation that goes along with being an "official" faction. That somehow if you're not official, the RP and impacts you make on the world aren't as legitimate. Which I don't think any DM actually feels that way, but as a player I could understand it. I remember I was going to request the HS to be an official faction, but at the advice of a DM, I didn't. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't. Once we got going and were up and running, we got all the NPC backing and chance to impact the server as anyone else. This was years ago, mind you, but I'd like to think DMs and players alike realize that the official faction setup is there chiefly to help you in being a faction. If it's no longer helpful, then there's no reason for you to use it.

I think I will stop posting as some seem to be contrary, simply to be contrary. No. As a server we have not outgrown "Official Factions". There is still many robust examples of good RP still being done in some of the larger ones. Belenoth was a good example of a player faction that lost steam for various reasons. Not everyone wants to be a Pariah or "Beautiful Snowflake" We can't all be the hero of the story, but may enjoy becoming a guard captain, or the chosen representative of the Temple of Malar. Jace is often the most active member of the temple of love and simply claiming title over it would not be cool. I sought an answer to my question and I received it. Player factions are fun, but tend to go away as people make alts, leaving little infrastructure or lore to start over with. See: Sembian Trading Company. The driving force behind that bailed without ever even so much as passing off the ledgers or contacts.

Thunder,
I don't really think anyone is trying to be contrary, they are merely sharing their experiences and thoughts. What you asked is valid, and their opinions are as well. In general, everyone agreed with you! Yes, factions need people, they need active people. As has been suggested, whether an "official" faction or player run, really matters little. What seems to be the underlying core piece that makes a faction work is the people in it, running it, and roleplaying that faction. I know this doesn't apply directly to what you asked, but... as was said, there is no "list" of positions available, but there are many people squatting on positions, some of which can never be removed. I'm not going to name names or point people out, but if we think for a few seconds, we can come all come up with some, I'm sure.
That's just how it is. Yes, factions will rise and fall, but.. so don't stories, so don't our own characters. Why let this bother you? As DI said... it's part of the story. Every day I learn something new about roleplaying, and every day I realize that things I used to let bother me are really just spice for my character's story, not something to get upset about. I'm not saying you are upset, just that that is my experience.
I once left a faction due to it's leader never logging in, and the rest more or less going their separate ways. Chain of command? Well... to be honest, that was lacking as we needed that leader to do... anything. That leader hasn't been ingame in months to my knowledge, and holds a very, very prominent position that likely will never be refilled. I'm saddened that this had to occur, but, at the time, I let it get to ME, instead of acting out within my character. That was my fault, not theirs. My character could have gone with the story, taken a new direction, done something else, but instead... I more or less retired them. Yes, I've made many characters, but there are a bare few that meant as much as this one. I think I've spent the past 9 months making characters in an attempt to regain some of the "glory" that character once had.
That's my experience.... others may vary.

I just erased about 1100 words of pure vitriol, as I seem to be having one of those days. Here is an Example. If I was to roll a cleric if Eilistraee right now and set up camp in there l, at level 3 could I get some keys and the legitimate right to say that I am running things? I have been back for a few months and have seen neither hide, nor hair out of that place.

Well... I'd say with some consistent roleplay? Perhaps so. I do recall a new cleric coming in maybe a year ago and within weeks was running the place, so, yes, it can be done.

People do go to the Shrine of Eilistraee *shrugs* I know, I'm one of them.
And as said before, factions rise and fall, or just limp along until members gather and things happen. If your character wants some position of leadership, go through the IC hoops and try to make it happen, I'm sure the DM Team would be glad to assist in any endeavors. My main character has been part of the same faction for over 6 years, and I have seen it all, times of being the only member to log in, and seeing people come and go. A lot of it has to do with patience, which I see very little of on the server, everyone (not literally) wants their just desserts right now. Hell, to be honest, I see most positions of authority filled, and then within weeks, the characters are gone, or rarely around. They got what they wanted, now it's time to move on I guess. Patience, it's a virtue.

Otherwise DM's arn't going to waste their time on some transient player and/or just give them keys. Shake them down for some events and you'll be good. Also I cut through the Shrine to get to Kampos all the time, and have only one time ever seen actual Drow there talking about the shrines namesake. I've seen a few humans sitting on their bums, but only once have I actually seen anything even remotely Eilistraee related. So yeah I'd say that shrine is fair-game for a faction takeover, but lets see if some random characters crawl out of the aether to stop you if you try.

I wasn't posting to be contrary. It was suggested that making a faction might have become too hard, and all I said was maybe having to "make" an official faction was part of that problem. Back when we made our rules for factions, it's no secret that we had more players. There were more people to share the workload, more people to be on consistently, more people to rise into place should other people step out.
Now that might be a little much to ask of us. There aren't as large groups as the Horsemen, the Banites, and the EO around any more. Most of what I've seen over the past few years has been just pcs grouping up and calling themselves whatever, and that has seemed to work. I'm not saying factions aren't needed, or official factions are bad, I'm saying maybe our definition of what a faction is needs no change with our player base so people feel less daunted by the task of running one and more free to make their faction work however they please. Again, I'm just offering my observation.
Regarding your question about the shrine, I'd echo Kudark and say yes, with time and RP you could. The Shrine in particular a place that's had a lot of turnover in the past few years. Setting up shop and taking the reigns of a faction pcs had forgotten was exactly what some people did with it not too long ago.

That's a cynical way to look at it. If a faction has died, I can understand someone not playing the character regularly. But that PC still exists in the world theoretically. If someone wants to interact with the remnants of a faction, surely those PCs come out of retirement to see what the hubbub is about. Resistance could be part of the process. I wanted so badly when the Doomguides became a thing that some EO veterans would come back, if only for a while, to have some sort of interaction there. People wanting to move forward and people wanting to hold on to the past can and should be allowed to be part of the story. I'd never want to hear a DM tell me I couldn't interact with any attempts to resurrect Kjetta's Hoarite church, simply because my monks story kind of lost its way when he left. Now if someone comes back and gives him reason to be around again, I have to act in a way differently than he would? No one should be a dick about letting new things happen, but we can't ask people to censor their PCs for the sake of OOC feelings. People taking faction dynamics too personally is where most of the drama starts anyway from all that I've seen. It's funny in a way. You can kill my character, and I'll probably get over it because lol death. But disagree with who should lead my faction, and apparently I have OOC beef with you now. xS

I meant more in a "come back and cockblock" or show up, remind whoever that positions are "for life" and then vanish again.
I didn't mean show up and play along. That's fun.

Eloquent as always Commie, but 100% accurate and totally the purpose of this thread. If you hold a position and are largely inactive, you should be a responsible adult and cough it up. The RP you did in the past should not prevent others from forging a future. If for some odd reason you even think that notion is fair, you suffer from delusions of grandeur. If you like the position so much, play the character. I am asking for a set of conditions or rules that should be observed. Shelving a character and then popping them back out because ( and pay attention to this part because it's important) OOCly you saw someone moving in on a position your character covets is just that. An act of OOC douchebaggery. Your characters theoretical existence does little to add anything to the current state of the server and advancment of plotlines. Theoretical existence or observation from another character and then templating that knowledge to another character is an example of Metagaming. To avoid this I avoid posting happenings on the the threads, because it gives knowledge to a character that has little if not zero physical presence on the server. I apologize if my wording appears combative. I typically only post anymore when I see an area that, (and I do understand it is mine) in my opinion could use clarification or improvement. I'm not in the habit of ruining other people's fun. If that was my aim, I would make a lengthy thread on how HiPS doesn't work anywhere near the way it is supposed to. Or how nerfing True Seeing had made adding 6 levels of Shadow Dancer to any caster class the new gold standard. Nope instead I'm asking for a little consideration from the player base, that complains about dead factions and a dwindling server population, but has largely done it to themselves by camping on FUN positions that others could enjoy while your character is sipping on hypothetical margeritas on a hypothetical beach, while hypothetically running something from afar.

Also. Dark. This isn't a stab at you man, and I appreciate your input. I just want to clarify that and thank you for providing some additional insight.

Also. Fort Summer works because the leader puts a substantial amount of effort into it. With and without DM support. If anything, use Gribbo as an example of how to lead properly. Look at Xy up in Belenoth. He didn't quit because 9/10ths of the faction did. He is literally quite active and generates good RP opportunities that others can enjoy. Both of these people do what they do to make things interesting for others. That is what is needed and will keep people around.

Been there, done that. And yes, some characters crawled out of their holes for it. Did you say crawl out of their holes? Crow? CROW? Did you?

Its a good example of what you can do on the server and why Amia keeps shit interesting. You do stuff. Sometimes a DM helps. You make storylines organically instead of forced via some "ongoing plot." Actual espionage. Actual intrigue. Actual server landscape changes. It's great. Anyone can do it if they just try as well.
