My Shaundakul cleric prays and enters the wastes of Zanshibon, but gets grabbed by a demonic hand. Freedom usually rids yourself of those pests, but the freedom from prayer doesn't, apparently.

I actually think those are mind affecting. I've always known that mind blank is what keeps you from being stuck by them, not prayer.

I did use mind protection, so that can't be it. It's paralysis.

Freedom from prayer doesn't grant you the visuals of the Freedom spell, so perhaps it's partial freedom only?

Okay, so here is the DL after digging into it.

The demonic hands are an effect that paralyzes. Mind Blank would work because paralysis is a mind effecting effect. While protection from evil would also grant that, it only grants it to effects that are cast by a creature of the targeted alignment. Since the demonic hands are applied from a trigger, which has no alignment, protection from evil would not work.
