You should take into consideration that you are having a shifter, and shifters are the ace in "easy" mode. Just saying.

I also played a no shield melee for a while and can't think of a single time I was like "man there are serious gaps in leveling." Everything I was able to do on my main so far the no-shield melee alt has been at least as good at if not better than; it's actually 'easier' to level my fight-man then it was my main. It's even easier now that I actually know where stuff is and what's at my level. There are options at basically every level range, and once you can port to the giant-area in brog you can just sit there for a few minutes and a group will come to you, everyone does those things and there's three +5 bosses out there people go do. There's always groups and with the changes to partying there's no excuse anymore.
So back to the question again;
"The problem is that I used the system to fill leveling gaps where it was incredibly hard to find hunting parties or even areas to go to."

What leveling gaps?
Nobody else is you or your experiences. The man says it was hard to find a group, it was hard to find a group. Who are you to call him out in italicized words?
I'll take a stab in the dark, that it was somewhere between 22-30. I've had trouble there too, depending on build and my available times and a few other things. You're talking like there's no excuse to be able to find a group.

I'm going italics because I had to ask a question three times before someone gave me an answer.
Dingos are safe and easy from like 16-20. Brog orcs are easy peasy from 20-24 ish, easier with every level, trivial with mindblank pots. By the time you hit 25 and brog orcs stop giving good xp you should be able to plow through frost or even fire giants, solo. It's not hard, people do it all the time, every day. Pot up and go smack them around; you don't need a group, a group just makes it a little faster.
Edit; not to mention the spiders in the 'rift' in the desert or whatever and that mini-dungeon right after it, also easy as pie for mid 20's.
If by "a little faster" you mean "twice as fast" or even "exponentially faster" then that may be so, I personally don't have enough hours in the day to grind solo however.
... wtf are dingos doing on Toril btw? I feel like I missed something.

Dingos in the desert. Where you exit from the Minotaur dungeon.
Even working full-time I was solo grinding a level a day up until the late 20's and I just burned six DC's to finish it off. Don't say there aren't options when there are, in fact, several.
There might be options, but they're pretty crappy options. Personally, I just don't have it in me to endlessly repeat content just to get a single level. Some dungeons are better than others, but generally I'll be burned out by the third run, sometimes much sooner (you couldn't pay me to run the gibberlings or the new beastmen twice in a row).

So I guess re-spawning resource nodes over and over with no one around and you're all alone just so you can repeat the same loop of picking flowers or whatever, well, that DOESN'T count as "endlessly repeating content" to you? Is that what you're saying here now?
Because honestly I don't understand how going mining or picking flowers for 9 straight hours and walking out of the forest as an 'epic' weapon master or arch-druid or master-arcanist makes any sense, at all. Much less logical then grinding on enemies that can actually kill you and interacting with people you meet along the way.

We could go in circles about stuff that doesn't make sense here. His whole point is (I think) that taking away this option to level, despite it not making too much sense, is a poor choice for the server as a whole. It's not as easy to level for some people, as it was for you. Due to less skill, can't find anybody to help, can't solo, edge of madness, whatever. No matter what you think, there's no denying that fact (that it's hard for -some- people to level). In the same sense math is hard for some people.
I'd be all for this change, if there was some sort of compensation for other jobs that actually make sense to give quite a bit of XP. Such as bounty hunter, big game hunter, vigilante, and so on.

Are we really at the point where we're comparing grinding in an mmo on mobs that might have up to two abilities to being 'bad at math?'

It's not forgotten realms, but in the book "The Demon Awakens" by R. A. Salvatore that's exactly how the hero Elbryan Wyndon "levels" up in his ranger training. He runs down a path every day to gather up ingredients to make elven wine. The first time I read it I immediately compared it to grinding in mmo's.

Does not change the fact it's still a nonsense. (btw, I really dislike Salvatore for what he's done to Drizzt. Just sayin')
I can see how, for example, a mage MAY progress by reading books instead of raiding dungeons, or how a druid progress through hugging trees and whatnot, but how exactly you are going to be a better fighter / weapon master / barbarian or any other "face to face" meleer if you pick flowers all day? Simple answer is - no way. It's just plain nonsense.
Like it or not, practice makes perfect. More you swing the sword better your arm is. Fighting characters should be primarily focused on combat.
That said, how exactly is different clicking on nodes and clicking on enemies? It's still a grind. And damn, I really thought people would find a combat more fun (as it includes interaction with AI, if nothing else), rather than a clicking on objects. It's like Minecraft for poor

I think you just have to reference the ground breaking piece of cinema realism: Katate Kid. Where the protagonist, Daniel-son, levels up to become a master karate fighter by continually painting the same fence and washing the same car for an old man who runs a bonsi tree shop.

I know a few farmers that would beg to differ the effects of "picking fruit to get stronger". Heck, try picking up hay out of a field one summer. Great workout!
Combat can be fun. However if you have a build that see's the respawn screen more often than not, there's not much fun in it. "Find a group" you say. Not everyone is in a timezone that is conducive to groups. I got on this morning and there were 4 people on A. 2 of which I know are maxed level. I dont know about you, but I dont like asking people to drag my lower characters who if a mob sneezes their way will die through dungeons. Gathering made it easier to be self reliant.

I thought I was clear about my point, but evidently not. So let's try it this way:
Who do you think would win? A mountain of meat guy gardener, or a skinny war veteran? That's what I am trying to say - you cannot expect someone who never fought in a battle to be an epic warrior because he was picking apples, pressing juices and harvesting herbs. Well, actually, here you can, but it still makes no sense.
Oh, and I'm CET timezone, so during my time, there is barely five people online. And also, my three characters I enjoy playing are two pure classes and one "mix", so really no hardcore builds. Yet I've managed, and I've managed BEFORE it was possible to venture in a party with much higher level characters. And not one of them ever touched the Job System. I can say that with an absolute clear conscience.

Nobody said it can't be done. Nobody disagrees it's a little silly. It's about taking away that alternative that upsets those that are against it, for reasons explained before. So what I'm getting at is, saying "I can do it so you should be able to as well" isn't really countering the point- rather, it knocks off one item from the list of complaints for those that can't/don't like grinding. And I'm one of those people. I could grind to 30 by slaying purely. But it's nice to lace in a little job xp too, for a change of pace. It's a mental block for me. I've already done so much monster slaying over the years, grinding for over an hour now is cancer. And solo grind? Even slower and worse, even though I -could- do it.
That's my personal experience and feeling.

Your point was clear, just not very convincing. Who would win? Well, seeing how a Barbarian will generally beat a Fighter pretty effortlessly, I'm going to say that the winner would be... whoever has the most epic gear.
Two things, though: First, why do you keep assuming people who use the job system for xp ONLY uses the job system for xp? That seems like a pretty extreme exaggeration to me. At least in my case, I'll mix it up, going hunting when I start to grow bored with job stuff, then switch over to job stuff when I grow bored with hunting (and logging off when I grow bored with both). You'd have to look for a long-ass time to find a character that's never been in a fight. Can we please put this tired strawman to rest?
Secondly, people keep arguing against the job system using only herbalist and orcharder as examples, but there's a ton of jobs on this server. Do you really think that a master lumberjack won't get a good feel for how to swing an axe? What about a miner? A butcher? A trapper? And that's not even going into the actual combat jobs, like mercenary, hired killer and witchhunter. Do you seriously believe that those activities shouldn't contribute towards building an experienced character?

Oh, well in that case I guess that intense boredom I keep feeling is just a trick of the mind.
Seriously, what's your point here? Obviously it's doable, it's just intensely boring.

They absolutely should.
Hence my point about mages doing research jobs and druids doing tree-hugging jobs. Unfortunate fact is that people are doing mostly jobs that were broken / are most xp rewarding. I wonder how many actual witch hunters are there. How many lumberjacks. On the other hand, how many herbalists, orchanders and juice makers are out there? I think we both know the answer.
I'd like to see a bonus xp for fighting characters picking the "fighting" jobs, like mentioned mercs or hired killers. Spellcasting characters for research jobs and sneaks for sneaky jobs, like burglar or gambler. Not-doable, I guess, but it would still make much more sense.

That's just people cheesing, though. Powergamers are gonna powergame, it's the same way any schmoe with a blade is a ki-wielding weapon master.
You can't balance in a way that has cheese be the norm, that just makes the server worse for those of us that play "normally". I've never grinded herbalism or orchardry, doesn't stop this change from negatively affecting me.

I've heard from at least two reliable sources that people were using these jobs to grind 1-30 in the span of two resets by making juice and picking flowers. If that's not the epitome of power-gaming I don't know what is.
Sure, but why should that affect the rest of the jobs?
I still stand by the idea that the job system could do with a massive overhaul if we had the staff/time. The reason why Orcharder is so powerful for leveling is you can max it you then have 90% to pick a resource from in towns in large groups, and because it also makes the juice turn that into even more EXP.
But I also like the fact that Orcharder was used to collect and produce a product something the rest of the current system does very poorly given the games low numbers, and long time ago I compared it to world of warcraft that has around 1000x our player base per server and I think at the time 11 jobs, where you can max 2 but on the other hand we have a total of 95 jobs, you can sort of max 2 but if your a collecting job you also need to soak a bunch into the trader job that is needed to store anything you collect.

This is obviously too much. I seriously doubt one person here would debate that. But switching it so you can get xp once/2 minutes from all job sources (if I understand how the changes worked) is going to the opposite extreme. What's that, 2k/hour xp from a job?

You know, after having played in a NWN 2 server for a while where it was considerably fast to level to 25 (and then the "grind" started, grind meaning 20/30 XP per kill, in really hard areas) and seeing how that influenced the creation of characters, influx of new players, and establishment of characters, and considering the diminishing player numbers for NWN across the board AND considering that for players who already level fast it is, well, fast, and for players who have trouble leveling it is like pulling teeth, I am still of the opinion Amia could do with lots MORE xp, from kills and jobs. Of course lvl 30 in 2 resets is ridiculous, and those players should be found out and punished for exploiting. But something that diminishes xp across the board for all gathering jobs, when only Orcharder and Herbalist were the problems, is more detrimental than helpful IMHO.
PvP is a non issue, as Epic Items are a deciding factor and those are still connected to 5% drop chance (barring a certain class that needs less items than any other), faster leveling only means that PvP-wise characters are not absolute pushovers for a much longer time for SOME players, creating more "conflict" opportunities, which seems to be a popular demand.
I also see Job xp as representative of other forms of xp gain that are not present in NWN, like training by yourself, researching, doing "class-related" stuff, etc and as my less than 50 DCs gained in the course of 4 years can show, the people donating their time as DMs have many things to do and obviously cant be everywhere all the time, which is more than understandable*, and I think the Job xp makes up for some of that, it is xp that a DM would award you on a table, only automated. And as with every form of automated xp, its better to punish abusers than cut off an arm because of a gangrenous finger.
And it probably shows, but I will say anyway. I am biased, loathe leveling in NWN (really came to hate its combat mechanics), and 42 of those DCs went into xp/gold BEFORE their value was changed.
*please do not read this as a criticism in ANY way to DMs, and in retrospect it can also be attributed to my personal quality as RPer.

Likewise.
I'm going to dive straight in with brutal honesty on this one. Being lumped in with exploiters for having the same job system ranks but not actually USING the exploits offends the hell out of me. Rachel was originally slated to only have 2 ranks in Herbalist, but you know what? She's a pure wizard who, for IC reasons, cannot use any summoning spells. You're damn right I took a third rank so that I could actually GET anywhere. And expecting me to spend DCs - an effectively nonrenewable resource for someone who isn't in a faction - or spend ten times the time for half the reward instead? I feel like I'm being discriminated against for NOT grinding 150 hours straight with a powerbuild.
Using the dynamic areas to restart the gatherer systems is the issue this was meant to fix, if I understand correctly. I don't really think any of us saw that coming, and shame on those who saw what happened and deliberately abused it for their own gain. That's so laughably, obviously wrong that I'm shocked any of our playerbase even DID something like that. I'll be the first to admit that gathering jobs give us ludicrous amounts of xp per reset on their own. That wasn't enough? Come on.
There's something that bothers me more, though. Not supposed to be an alternative to hunting? What exactly does that prove? At the top of my availability for the server, I was never able to solo or party grind from level 3 to 30 in a week or so as is apparently the norm. If I had spent the same amount of time hunting as I did farming herbs, I'm forced to draw the conclusion that I would have so much xp flowing out of my pockets that even characters who didn't hunt would be epic level. Bear in mind that without the exploit, you can only farm for herbs or orchards once every eight hours. You can click on a giant all day long.
I suppose my real issue with the whole thing isn't the change. We'll adapt - we always do. It's the reasoning provided for the change. Comparing the legitimate gatherers to exploiters by proxy is horrifying. Comparing that system to conventional grinding is somehow even worse. Why, exactly, would it break server balance so badly for us to have something that gives us a return for time invested that ISN'T left-clicking on NPCs?
As for me, I don't know. I'll probably never know. I'm not a dev, and neither is anyone who is against the change, as I'll very vehemently point out. It just bothers me, is all. It feels like there's a broken trust there, now. But not from player to dev; the other way around.
I would kind of like my 9 job points back, though.

You can ask for that. It is not considered a exploit, just like dumping 33 points into a skill at lvl 30, or building your character with the meta-knowledge you can count on certain items. What IS considered an exploit tho is using the Job System for anything other than fluff, as we were reminded.

Anyone saying the job system was "never intended" for use as an alternative to hunting has a rather revisionist view of history. From its very implementation and even before that it has had a purpose as a alternate leveling means, and it has been discussed and used since its very creation for that purpose by many.
The job system was EXPLICITLY meant to replace hunting in the XP system, or more correctly to replace the grind only XP system with one that allowed grinding and/or the usage of the job system for leveling. (along with DCs, which I would point out that the recent increase in DC XP worth is far more "non-nonsensical" if that is your argument against job system XP.)

This is absolutely wrong.

Absolutely. One hundred percent. Wrong. This isnt revisionist history, this is straight from the mouth of a DM who was there when Disco made the system and added it. His opinion was that adventurers should be adventuring. Let's take a look a the job page....

These jobs are meant to flesh out a character, not to give you much of an advantage in playing the game. You will not get super weapons, great spells, decent protective auras, for instance. You will (probably) gain gold and xp and some simple items. A few jobs give ability boosts, but those are not spectacular (the jobs are, of course, the buffs are not). You should take a job because you think it fits your character, and perform the tasks because you feel that gives your character a place in Amia. You should not take a job if you are looking for an edge in combat, it will not give you any.

That is a good point to make, though perhaps in a more constructive way. This is a role playing server, not everyone wants to play the epic adventurer who goes out and commits genocide as a means to pass the time or for profit. We should be catering to nearly all forms of RP, making alternatives to endless slaughtering worthwhile, not pointless.
If I rolled up a herbalist PC, I'd enjoy it much more if I didn't spend weeks trying to get enough XP to take the second rank, then months after trying to get a third rank.

That is objectively what you have always already gotten with the job system, an alternate means for leveling which even if it was at the same pace as grinding would still come out lesser due to the fact that you don't gain nearly as much in terms of items/gold.
Further your opinion on the matter might have always been that however there is still topics from even before its was implemented that show PROVABLY otherwise if you actually read what other people had to say in there. Further being a DM at the time is Irrelevent here Tormak so lets stop with that, since I was there at the time and remember that all just as clearly.
You can't say it was never intended for that purpose when that was openly discussed with a number even verbalizing the intent to use it to level entirely throught that system for "pacifist" characters, not to mention having myself leveled a Drow character almost entirely Through Job system supplemented by slight grinding and DC usage do to the fact that the noble bard spent most time RPing (And because of such talked with several DMs at that time none of which had issue with it)
Separate from all of that entirely, seems to be the assumption that Grinding (since that is what we are talking about when we talk "hunting" XP) is somehow the equivalent of "adventuring" and that that needs to be what XP is based around. Ignoring the simple fact that most significant XP gain done in "adventuring" is done with little to no RP and even more rarely any of decent quality.
Making "hunting" or "Adventuring" out to be more than the Grinding that they primarily are makes it seem like it is more deserving by means of rewarding "RP" or a sort of expectation of that based on nothing more than what seems to be certain groups opinions that it is XP is more deserved to be earn more quickly with the determining factor being simply build strength.
Arguably many classes it could be argued should gain XP far more quickly through certain jobs than through mindlessly killing things. And it seems senseless to overly deminish the ONLY real alternate leveling mechanism when it is already the lesser of killing stuff or running quests (usually killing stuff) in both xp gain speed as well as benefits.
A lot of you are making a big deal about having to wait 2 minutes to refine/convert one job system item into another for XP. Okay, yeah. I can understand that. But!
All this change did was make it where you can't massively use the job system to the point it could be consider abuse. Is it punishing people who were using it as it was intended? Of course not. Now it's just no different than being a master painter, where you only get 75XP or 150XP every 2 minutes. You can still go and refine all 100 of your friend's ore pieces into ingots in one large batch. You just won't get roughly 7,500XP in one large chunk for doing it all at once. For nothing more than clicking the mouse a few times without any real thought process.
Finding the resources isn't that hard. A few designers in the past were a little heavy handed with their placing of the job resource nodes. That's no one's fault! There wasn't exactly a guide of "Only put X job resource nodes in one area!"
If you take a quick walk around the servers you will find 3 iron ore deposits in an insanely easy place to get. You will find two copper ore deposits in another easy to get to place. Two silver in another, a couple more iron in another, mithral in one more place and so on. That's only on A. That's not including the mines on B. If you are a master miner who is buying ore from merchants as soon as the server crashes or resets, along with mining every single ore deposit you know of, you can easily get over 100 pieces of ore, if not upwards to 300.
I didn't pull those numbers out of my butt, either. I played a master miner before the server went dynamic and I was getting that many. That's not including the mine dwarves can only access in Barak Runedar, since my character wasn't a dwarf. When I would take another miner along for RP reasons, they would get just as many. If we both had a friend who was a master refiner, and dumped it all on them so we could get ingots, that master refiner would have had over 600 pieces of ore to refiner per reset/server crash. For a master that's roughly 45,000XP. Per reset. Perhaps more if they roll a lot of bonuses and get 150XP instead of 75XP.
Let me say that again.
Roughly 45,000XP or more per reset or server crash. That's far more than one run through in the Abyss.
Does this replacing adventuring? You bet it does.
So, please, tone it down a notch. We didn't take the easy way just to change things around and I find it quite offensive someone would say that. It was either do this or painstakingly go through each and every single area on both servers to massively reduce the number of job nodes they had, which would have totaled to possibly over 1,000 areas combined. People would have been able to get a large chunk of XP all in one go, but they wouldn't of had the amount of resources they do now.
But we probably would have been having people get angry at us for that, too.
Just let me add that I had something wrote up for a lot of the other conversion jobs, but it made the post far too long. What I do want to say, though, is that a lot of the other conversion jobs are on par with miner and refiner. This change just wasn't made because of one job, but quite a few of them.
Those of you who have no idea what we're talking about? Good! That means you weren't abusing the job system! For those of you that do understand and still want the change back, even have done it yourself to quickly level your characters or your friends characters, shame on you. You ruined it for the rest of the server.

This sounds exactly like regular hunting.

So what? You can run through the Abyss several times in one reset, so it's still a more time-efficient way of leveling. Even for the refiner, that xp would have required several hours of work to set it up beforehand.

I'm sorry, but what you're saying here is basically "we didn't take the easy way, it's just that the other solution would have been too hard". There are less drastic solutions to this "issue" (and that's assuming that it is an issue in the first place).

No, to hell with that. I'd use the job system for both roleplay and a pittance of experience on the side of hunting, and I'm supposed to feel bad about that? For using the system for its intended purpose? No!

That attitude was uncalled for. She saying that if you were abusing the job system you should feel bad. You said that you haven't. So why are you pissed off with what she said? Perhaps you should step back from posting here for a moment.

Because by her standards I was abusing the system.

I understand, I just disagree, and therefore I should be ashamed, and I ruined it for everyone. That's not a loose interpretation, those are her words.
