I think almost everyone on the plannet has their own perspective on charisma, and I keep seeing other threads being thwarted again and again my intense charisma discussions... and there's plenty of other threads that talk about charisma that are 10 years old....

I just thought it was time to start another one. yay.

Here's my take on charisma:

Charisma is personal magnetism. The wonderful thing about magnetism is that there is a positive and a negative side to it. Someone with natural charisma can attract people or repel them. You know that guy that walks into a room and you hate that he's there and you wish you could ignore the fact that he's there, but you can't and it makes you really really really really mad? That guy has charisma. You know that guy that just makes your entire life feel better when you have a conversation with him, or maybe just spend some time in the same room with him listening to him talk? That guy has charisma. Those are the two sides of the magnet.

My two cents. enjoy.

charisma as previously stated is subjective given it's "eye of the beholder" thus should be entirely RPed, kind of like your skills in regard to player to player interaction

PHb 3.5 says

"Charisma measures a character's force of personality, persuasiveness, personal magnetism, ability to lead and physical attractiveness"

now this can be seen as subjective, that physical attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder, but the fashion industry and movies I go see tell me this isnt as much the case as I would like it to be.

Even less so in d20, where stats define almost all aspects of your char, in charismas case this includes if you are smoking hot.

according to th phb, you cant be pretty without charisma, you can be ugly, say your charisma is represented by gravitas or what have you, but appearence is a factor in the stat and thus must be accounted for if it is rp'ed


all this ofcause, is moot if it is not the case that we want to enforce all aspects of stats and skills, which I doubt we will, as the stats are restrictive mechanics for rp, thus some aspects are ignored for the sake of a good time.

Just wanna point out that normaly people that are very charismatic are usually percieved as more beautiful than someone with amazing looks but a dead face and nothing to say.

Sorta. The *most* charismatic people I've met in my life have -all- been rather unattractive. The charismatic types that have been attractive, often rely on their looks to get by. The two often overlap, and sometimes have similar effects, but are very different. But if you want to see how often appearance trumps substance, take a look through American celebrity culture.
