Hi!

I've been a long time player of nwn2, and I only sort of dipped my toe into nwn1 online PW:s yet, but I've looked at Amia in particular.
I found it kind of hard to navigate the nwn1 IG functions though, like sending tells/retells, how to create a "bio" = a descriptive text about your char to pop up when some examines them... In general I found it hard to concentrate on RP because I was so clumsy with/new to the nwn1 interface.
Is there some sort of inofficial guide for newbies to the different available functions in nwn1, particularly for online play?
Also, is there any type of third party programs that people use to enhance their online experience or expand the gameplay options? Like the Skywing Client Extension for nwn2?

Best regards

I'm actually creating something like this! I've been compiling notes of things that didn't seem too easy fro me to figure out and have been planning on making a thread with all the information laid out nice and neatly with an easy to use navigation to help newbie players out. Another thing that may help is asking other players a few things but that does tend to cut away from the immersive side of things.

Hey there and welcome!

I would be happy to help you learn these functions while IG (in game). Until PassionateShadow's thinger comes out:

My login is MadrikVale and am usually on a character named Madrik Street.

To see a list of players with their associated login name, pull up your Rest menu with the 'R' key. Option 12 is 'List Players on this server.'

In your battlelog (the screen on the bottom next to your dialogue screen, taking up half of the width of your screen) will display a list of currently logged in characters in teal and their logins in yellow.

Press 'P' to bring up the Player List (or use the Player List button beneath your portrait in the upper-right hand corner of your screen). Scroll to find the character you'd like to send a Tell to and click the character name. There are four buttons on the top of this list. The Tell button is the furthest on the left with two faces looking like they're about to make out and there ya go!

You'll notice the command placed in your text box! '/t' is to send a Tell and specify the character name with quotation marks but be mindful that many characters have periods or extra spaces in their names in light of character rebuilds (do overs). i.e: /t "Madrik Street" (two spaces between the first and surname).

If this was all blah blah then sorry!

--

A tip. Go to Controls in the Escape menu and go to Change Key Settings, and set my Drive Mode Forward to Spacebar. That way you can easily walk forward while using your W, A, S, and D directional keys.

Another tip. You know that Rest menu by pressing 'R'? Explore it!

And most helpful is to press 'J' for your Journal (or by clicking respective Journal icon under your portrait). There, under Completed Quests (the middle tab) are topics that contain short-and-sweet invaluable information concerning the server.

Some of what you are seeing is probably just from it being an old game, and every server seems to have a different way of handling some of the extra things that weren't included in the original game, like changing the bio section. In the base game, this cannot be changed by the player and is set to what you put in at character creation. Amia does have a function to change that via command line input, the details of which are in your journal (under 'additions to the game' or something similar I think).

The commands are (I think):
/s f_bio n [text] - this overwrites what was already there
/s f_bio a [text] - to add another line to what is already there
/s f_bio b [blank] - to add a line break
/s f_bio r [blank] - reverts what you might have changed this way to what you originally wrote in at character creation

It's useful, if you plan to change this much, to keep a separate text document on your computer for stuff on your character. I suggest this anyways as a way to keep track of things that might be going on or have happened.

The /s part send that input line to the shout channel, you can also change that by clicking on the button next to it and choosing the shout channel. /w used at the beginning is the quick/easy way to whisper as well. /p works for party chat.

The easiest way to handle tells are to click directly on the player's portrait. Anywhere you see their portrait (the tiny portraits next to their text work, as do their portraits on the side of the screen if you are in a party with them) you can click on it and the game automatically puts in the tell information. /t "exact character name" will work, but it's a bear to use that way with long or strange name. /tp "exact player login" works as well, if you know the players exact login. If you mess up on those whatever you type is lost though. There is no reply function.

One neat thing it took me a long time to figure out is that you can assign 'examine' to your quickbar. Right click an open slot, and follow the radial menu until you find examine. This lets you look at yourself and anything else that for some reason doesn't give you a radial menu option to examine it.

Another useful trick is that the third tab of your in game journal is editable in game, and saves across multiple log in/outs. This is a quick and easy way of keeping track of some things, without having to tab out of the game and check a separate document.

There's something of a learning curve, but most people are happy to help you along anywhere something isn't making sense. It might break the flow of RP a bit, but not as much as it would frustrate to you to try and figure out on your own.

Oh, I looked at the functions available through the Rest menu, and you can also make skill/save rolls with it, nice!

DC' Requesting Spell Slots
2 DCs multiplied exponentially for further spellslots above the first slot
So if you wanted an item with five spellslots, it'd be : 2 + 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 = 18 DC's
~any lvl spell slots~

How to save Log files

:You can save your client log if you have entirechatlogging set to on.
Before you open the game again.
It always writes automatically, but doesn't save automatically, and will be wiped when the game (but not server) is restarted
So as long as you remember to save it after the game crashed or the like..
You'll always have a log.
:ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=1
G o to your NWN folder. In the main folder, (You can get there by right clicking your short cut for NWN and hitting Open file location) there is a text document called nwnplayer

Paste that into your nwnplayer.ini
Under Game Options.
Anywhere under there but before Control Options.
:Now just remember to save a copy of that file before starting up the game again, and you'll have everything from your chat and system window.
I usually just copy+paste the file and then rename it whatever recap of what happened.
Itsaved to:
NWN > Logs > nwclientLog1
So you just copy and paste that file when you want to save the log.
It'll make a slightly differently named duplicate.
You can leave the original file alone, it will automatically wipe and re-write when you start the game next.
Even clicking the shortcut icon will refresh the log, though, so be sure you save it before going to start up the game at all.
You can also make copies to save while the game is active.

Thank you for all the tips, they have been very helpful.
Can I also ask where the OOC information is for the Underdark setting, particularly Nec'pereya/L'Obsul, and perhaps also other UD starting points like the duergar starting point? I mean where are the places situated in the Underdark, and perhaps other information if that is available too?
I looked around at the forums, but I probably didn't look in the right places. :)

If you're brand new to nwn1, the biggest tip I can give you is to go into your options menu and under graphics, turn off shiny water. You would be amazed at how many problems that solves.

Can I also ask just one more thing, specific to this server?

Upon death, I get the choice of a) either returning to the scene of the death, or b) "return home" or something like that. a) usually means a repeat of history :D , but b) does not seem to work, I'm still stuck in the land of the dead when trying to use this option.
Do I have to tie my character to some specific location and if so how/where, in order to use b)? Right now, there is no way of getting back from the "Fugue" except to certain death.

Best regards
