I have been encountering this issue with Neverwinter Nights for years now and I'm finally sick of it.
My problem is twofold:

 1. If I'm playing with an older version of my video card driver, the game runs pretty well, except my framerate is really, really horrible. It is not an issue when I am standing in Tarkuul and chatting, but as soon as I start moving, it turns into a framerate nightmare. So having an old driver is really not an option.

 2. When I update my drivers, the game (you just lost it!) framerate is perfect, even in the most crowded areas, except I am encountering crashes to desktop, and game becoming non-responsive.
    - I played around a bit with resolution and settings and there are ways to play it without crashing, as long as I am not switching between full screen and windowed. Also if I push my settings too high, the game will just crash to desktop.
    - I pushed the anti-aliasing and now the game crashes to desktop immediately upon it being started via any shortcut. Now I cannot even access the options menu to drop down the anti-aliasing.

System: Windows XP SP3
Graphic: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (that's 1gb DDR5)
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 250
RAM: 4GB

Hey Dead,

What's the settings you have in your nwn.ini and nwnplayer.ini?
Does your Graphics Card have a specific program for controlling it as well? Since there could be an option using that to minimise all the settings actually used by outside sources (i.e not the ingame settings) to make it somewhat more stable?

If this isn't clear lemme know and we can go through things a bit more.

I have ATI catalyst. I did push up the settings, and on the old driver it literally makes no difference. My FPS will be as it is. To solve the anti aliasing crash I rolled back the driver, entered the game normally and toned down the game settings. When I get back home I'll update the driver to a newer versio and will have to check those files out.

Is there something specific that I should c/p here from it?

For Nwnplayer.ini
Everything under "Game Options"
For nwn.ini
Everything under "Display Options"
Everything under "Video Options"

That should cover what is needed.

What Direct X version do you currently have installed? As a side thought.

I tried toning down everything in catalyst to a minimum and it still crashes immediately upon clicking on the icon.

I'm using DirectX 9.0c

Okay, looking up a few things.

Just disable Shiny Water and see if that solves it maybe?

The edit I made yes that's true but you said it crashed it?
So ignore the rest of the changes I made and just focus on the ShinyWater one.

mhm, your CPU is dual core, so the Client CPU Affinity in nwnplayer.ini should not be higher than 1. Try that value, just in case?

Any chance you can roll back to an older version of the driver (yet newer than your buggy old one) ?
There are reports of broken OpenGL in some versions of ATI 5700 drivers.

Someone also posted a fix for a similar bug with NwN2 which involves reinstalling the game in XPSP2 compatibility mode. would that help?

Tried with CPU affinity 1, no change.

I can roll back for sure. But I'm not sure whether it will help. I remember when I was playing on my old AGP computer, the driver I got with my PC was working fine for nwn. As soon as I updated it, my FPS dropped to something truly horrible. I was using ATI 3850 which is a top notch AGP video card.

can you try to switch to Dolby Surround in the Advance Sound Options?

Edit : when you right-click the shortcut to the .exe, what do you have in the Compatibility tab? can you try changing a few options here?

I don't know how to do that dolby thing.

I can run in win 95, win 98, win 2000, and win NT 4.0 (service pack 5)

In the main game screen (nwnmain.exe, or clicking Play on nwn.exe), You have the following buttons :
New / Load / Multiplayers / Movies / Options / Exit

When you enter the Options, select Sound Options then click on Advanced Sound Options and click on Dolby Surround
(The MilesFast 2D emulation may cause a glitch)

Did you try to perform a new "Scan" in the nwnconfig.exe application?

For some reason that worked on my test PC when i was having similar issues.
