I am excessively pleased to announce that some new BBCodes are being added.
You may notice new options beginning to appear next to the other BBCode button shortcuts.

At this point, the actual names of the codes (as they appear on the shortcuts, and how they are typed manually) can be changed. Shorter is better, and I'm open to suggestions as to what to call them. Best to do it sooner rather than later, because once they change, any posts with the old names will no longer display the code, properly, until the names are also changed in that post, naturally.

Let's start with...

Columns!
This awesome code allows us some new presentation options.
It may be a little tricky to figure out how to get it to do what you want at first, but just playing around with it, it becomes apparent pretty quick where you put the division line to designate which chunk of text should be on what side.
It allows you to put content into two columns to have it appear side by side. Each column is its own region, so you select text from one side or the other individually. You can also place images in one of the columns to be partnered up with some text. This might be especially handy for people who have artistic characters and want to describe a picture more in depth right next to it.

Image
For example, the image to the left is using both the img code (OBVIOUSLY) and the align-center code. Pretty much anything you can do in a post normally, you can do within a column code * (See below for exceptions). Feel free to use this thread to experiment and play around with the new codes being introduced here. The only "restriction" that I suggest for the column code is to be mindful of the size of images you use in it, as it could quickly turn into one of those crazy post-exploding scroll issues. That's the case anyway, but it could happen twice as fast using columns!

My hope is that this will prove a helpful formatting option for IC and OOC purposes alike, to give out forum some more dynamic ways of presenting information. So, enjoy!

Image

* Exceptions:
The vertical line "|" cannot be used within col code, since that is the character it uses to differentiate sides.
Sadly, another column code cannot be nested within a column for maximum column inception.

Behold the glory of the hquote.

This is one of the styles of expandable spoilers that is being added.
So named because it looks just like the normal quote box, but is hideable!
You can do just about anything in the hquote that you can do outside of the code.

LIKE ADD COLUMNS!WHAT MADNESS
(But you can't nest another hquote within itself. :( )

But, you can add pictures!
Image
So if you're posting a bunch of screenshots, you can nest them into a single hquote, or put each in their own.

The "More / Less" is set and unfortunately cannot be customized on the fly. But I'm taking suggestions for alternate words for the expand/hide options.

This is another option of an hquote: hquote2!

show
In case the button doesn't meet your fancy, or in case there is a need to differentiate between types of expandable content.
Hilariously, you can nest different styles of spoiler quotes.

The "Show/Hide" is set and unfortunately cannot be customized on the fly. But I'm taking suggestions for alternate words for the expand/hide options.

  The best version

This is ex, for expandable. It's pretty much the same as hquote2, except you can set a custom title for it just like you would in a normal quote code. There is a button, but we don't actually have the image installed for it, so it's just blank. (I honestly prefer that, it makes it much more trim and unobtrusive!) The other reason I like this one is that it isn't tied to the color scheme of the quote code, which means a nice, clean black background for the expanded window.

The custom title can't have punctuation marks in it, unfortunately. For instance, it won't allow you label it something like, "Character's training screenies" because of the apostrophe. But spaces are ok!

show
As with the others, you can next different styles of expandable codes, but not the same one within itself.

I'm intending to utilize these for the new FAQs that are being collated and answered, to help with forum organization, and of course, to help make any sort of IC things more organized and pretty, also! The expandable codes are ideal for any long lists that are boring as hell, but good to have reference of. For example, factions could keep track of a list of supplies without it scrolling on for miles; just could just open the expandable section to peek at what's there, as needed.

As with the others, I highly advocate the use of these for putting chat logs, screenshots, and other such things into to make things tidier and easier to sift through, without having to also link to an external place!

And, of course, you can customize the text within all of the expandable/quote codes.

Good for designating sections or the like, either OOCly or ICly!

Can be combined with other codes...LIKE COLUMNS!

This awesome is yay, indeed!

Finally, I bring you the "ohshit" code.

For when you just really gotta make a really intense statement. Color is still up for debate, although it's most likely to end up in the yellow-orange color of the forum theme. Can be used for headers, making "seriously, read this, it's super official" posts, or the like! This could also be a nice alternative option to making IC sections of quotes, instead of using the grey-background quotes like many of us do now.

Those are the new codes. As mentioned, feel free to play around with them and test them in this thread, but I don't recommend using them in common use until we've decided on what we'd like them to be named, to save from having to make edits.

The code names are currently (in order of their posted appearance):

    col
    hquote
    hquote2
    ex=
    olala=
    ohshit

Loving this! Don't suppose we'd be able to also get YouTube video embedding? Or would that be too much?

The whole thread, or a specific element when you interact with it? What's your browser and version?

Would that have any adverse effect on people with slower connections, like a page with several images does?

I would also only be in favor of that if it could be somehow limited to the Off-Topic forum and nowhere else.

I come from a forum with this feature and it affects people with slow net, so we have a one embed limit

Eih, honestly if that's the case, I'd rather just not worry about it, since it would only be used in off-topic anyway and is just as easy to link something.

I didn't do anything about it! I copied the code exactly as it was made and presented by the PHP3 people, who made the code. They called it Collumn, so Collumn it is.

I keep needing to find this thread again to refresh my memory on how to use the new BBCs properly under certain circumstances. Is this information placed in its own section now, or can we simply sticky this thread so it's easy to locate?

I would have noted some of them before I realized that the necessary information is actually provided by the tag shortcuts themselves above the text box when you make a post. Can I defend myself by noting that I've been working all night and it's an ungodly hour?

This is a valuable resource for the entire forum, not just me. Clearly you and the staff think so, too, or this thread wouldn't exist in the first place; the BBCodes would have simply appeared one day with perhaps a passing mention in Varia.
