I've been doing some research after considering what I could be doing to help Tarkuul by sailing around the local region on the Living Guard's Funboat, and trying to work out who exactly Cordor (a big city based on trade) had been trading with and where for the sake of Jannah being able to do her Cleric of Waukeen thing and shout "Exports! EEEEXPORTS!!". Basically I noticed that the local region around the sea of swords as portrayed in the maps, and as played out by most of the server so far has been missing at least two major islands in the vicinity, albeit ones that are a bit obscure in the lore department:

Gundarlun: An island approximately due west from Neverwinter, on about the same Longitude as Ruathym that's ice locked or shrouded by mist at any given point in the year, but is none the less a major port for trade ships throughout the region, and a regular haunt for adventurers looking for some high seas viking adventures (awesome).

And...

Tuern: An island in the frozenfar, far to the west of Faerun which I think places it about due West from Forstakkr. Known for its black beaches and heavy volcanic activity which makes it a regular haunt for red dragons, magic hating vikings who slaughter wizards and clerics on sight (which is troublesome considering how high magic Amia is), and fire giant viking raiders (now that's just awesome) who row out on giant sized longships to plunder and pillage across the sea of swords as far south as Gundarlun, which would mean that fire giant vikings could well have been plundering all over the place in Brogendenstein without us really noticing.

There's a few others floating around as well like Mintarn; a wretched hive of scum and villainy 400 miles off Waterdeep, populated entirely by fugitives and run by a benevolent Tyrant, Orlumbor; a port city state that's famous for having a really awful port that no one wants to sail through, and the Purple Rocks; major exporters of salted fish and pickled foods in the region. However Tuern and Gundarlun are the ones which really stuck out as being conspicuously absent.

These things are relatively minor since their main mention is in a book called "Savage Frontier" which was published in 1988, but both were mentioned again in a 2007 book titled "The Grand History of the Realms". Mentioned as having teamed up to conquer the northernmost isles of the Moonshaes a long time ago, with conflict only having ended in the last few decades through the Queen of the Ffolk having forced a lot of intermarriage between the Northmen and the Ffolk after surrendering the northern isles to them.

I don't have these books personally, I've only found mentions of this stuff in wikis and a lot of this is [citation needed]. But it really seems like this is a massive missing part of local history, and it may be sort of disturbing considering there's things like a giant magic hating viking empire waging a war of conquest through highly magical Kohlingen/Cordorian waters, and fire giants on longboats raiding all around Brogendenstein that we just never noticed before.

So I'm just asking if anyone with these books can fill me in for the lore fix, and if these places which have seemingly just never been mentioned or recognised before (at least not around me) in the canon are just things which were replaced with our Amia stuff, or if they were just standing in the background while we had blood magic stuff to deal with, going all "See? Magic ruins everything."

I also may just want to punch fire giant vikings in the face with my magic fists so I can plunder their island's rich veins of diamonds and pure adamantium... Maybe...

I'm sure a DM will have to confirm this but I'll rattle on anyway. My thinking would be that Gundarlun and possibly Tuern does not exist in the setting. My surmising is based off the maps. Looking at the Amia map with a FR setting map it seems that homebrew Brogendenstein is about were Gundarlun would be and homebrew Forrtakkr is in the vicinity of Tuern (and the Purple Rocks). When the Amia maps were drawn these islands were not included, but other islands were, such as the Ice Peak and the Whale Bones, so I can only assume they were intentionally retconned (or possibly forgotten about).

But a bit more helpful heres some excerpts from the Savage Frontier book:

Quote:
GUNDS
The folk of Gundarlun are excellent merchants and fishermen, more reverent to the gods than the average Northmen. They favor the sword over the axe and even poorer folk dress in garb made of colorful southern cloth. Gunds are found as adventurers or
mercenaries along the Sword Coast. They have only a 50% chance to gain the benefits of the barbarian character class and are rarely berserkers. The figureheads on their long ships often depict fish (perhaps marlins or swordfish) and predatory birds (such as ernes and ospreys).

TUERNISH
The isolated folk of Tuern worship no gods (and argue that none exist) and tolerate no magic-users in their midst, but give tribute to the red dragons of the mountains. They try to enslave all non-Northmen and, when visiting other lands, deface temples of the gods. They sail long ships big enough to house giants (which they often do), with figureheads that depict fierce warriors. Most have crews of over 100 warriors.

RUATHYN AND LUSKANITES
Though they are separated by 1,800 miles of open ocean, the Ruathyn (the people of Ruathym) and the Luskanites are closely related. They dress in furs, wear horned helmets, constantly raid settlements along the coast and on the Moonshaes, attack ships on the high seas, and hate Waterdhavians, elves, halflings, southerners, and each other. They trust only their weapons. The figureheads on their ships favor red and white dragons, as do their sails.

ROCKLANDERS
The people of the Purple Rocks were once a Gundarlun colony. There are no aged here and no children. The skins of all the people are
unusually scarred and weathered. For Northmen, the Rocklanders are unusually warm and friendly, though their smiles may seem fake. They appear to worship the usual Northman deities, but their graven images of those gods all show many, tentacle-like arms. Their long ships favor squid-like figure heads.

Quote:
Gundarlun
Government: Organized into 15 Jarl holds and ruled by King Olger Redaxe. Gundarlun is the only island member of the Lords’ Alliance.
Largest Settlement: Gundbarg (12,000 —the largest city in the islands)
Economy: Trade, fishing, farming, and mining.
Militia: Gundbarg has a standing army of 300 warriors who act as city guard and crews for the King’s six raker
warships. Each Jarl has 1d3 long ships crewed by 40 warriors.

Gundbarg ''Gateway Port”"
Nearly every ship crossing the Trackless Sea puts in here during its journey for fresh water, food, repairs, replacement crew or goods to carry. Huge warehouses, drydocks, sailmakers, inns, and taverns all provide necessary services to seafarers... and at reasonable prices. The Dragon Turtle Inn on the harbor is noted as an adventurers’ hangout and a place to find captains with ships for hire.

Tuern
Government: Five Northman kings, who recognize High King Threlked Ironfist of Uttersea as liege.
Largest Settlement: Uttersea (2,000)
Economy: Whaling, fishing, farming, diamond and admantite mining (which the Tuernish do not have the ability to
refine or use in their own weapons).
Militia: Each king has 1d3 longships, crewed by 50 warrior/archers.

Tuern is a rocky, but fertile land of black beaches and seething volcanoes. Conditions are harder on Tuern than on many of the other outer islands, but the Northmen here are among the wealthiest in the North. The island’s vulcanism produces two great treasures, huge diamonds and the valuable ore from which adamantite is refined (pure adamantite is magically alloyed with iron to create
+5 weapons and armor). This same geothermal activity creates a perfect home for fire giants and red dragons in the crevass called Flame Fault. The giants here are sea rovers who sail gargantuan long ships, but rarely raid farther east than Gundarlun.

That's mainly why I ask, to find out if it was an oversight or a retcon, either way knowing helps people wanting to do anything in the local region (like cordor getting back on its feet as a major trade port) and lends flavor to conflict in brogendenstein (those dwarves hate some fire giants)
