So I've installed windows 8.1 on my laptop, and I can't seem to run NwN on it.

It has weird texture behavior and about 3 FPS (after fiddling with it, it was originally like 0.5 FPS), as seen here:

http://i.imgur.com/XKkwU4z.png

I've tried compatibility mode for Windows 8, vista, and windows XP with both service pack 2 and 3. None of those settings worked. It's set to run on one processor, not two, because that was one problem (it raised the FPS -slightly- when I changed that), and I have the HotU update installed and everything - but it still runs abysmally slow, and the textures for the tileset seem to not load, as seen in the picture.

What have I done wrong?

:( Wish I knew how to fix it. Unfortunately I don't know a thing about Windows 8.1 as I still use XP. Hey Leathan?! Do you know anything about this? Pweeze?!

MOD

p.s. welcome back ML... wondered where you ran off to :) *hugs*

Do you have any other operating systems available? XP, Vista, 8? It sounds like you would do better off by reverting to previous Windows systems instead.

No, I did not partition my system, I installed 8.1 on my computer and left 7 behind. It was for work purposes.

Does nobody have any advice for this? Supposedly compatibility mode is supposed to be the same as using the old OS, but clearly something else is at work here.

Look here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=70310

To quote myself...

I just fixed my NWN/WIN8 problems like WOAH.

I was getting terrible lag, reaching to unplayable levels if there was anything going on. Did all the normal stuff with the .ini, which helped but not as much as I was hoping. But I made do. When I tried to hunt more though (new character), it just was not working. So I looked around a bit, and found a few other things to try I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere else.

I did three things at once, so I'm not sure which worked the magic. I set audio to a 2D option (which I've seen mentioned, but apparently I forgot to try before), downloaded and installed the DirectX9c (I swear I did that before too... but here: http://tinyurl.com/mruqufc, and having the more updated DriectX10/11 isn't enough it seems), and changed the color setting on the application (right click on the application, properties, use the compatibility mode for XPsp3, then 'reduced color mode' to 16bit).

Something in that fixed me getting lag at the lowest settings and smallest resolution, to running everything on max full screen with no problems. I haven't seen anything really spell heavy yet, but the instant change from what it was doing, to how it runs now is -amazing-. If anyone is still having Win8 issues, try that. The color thing was actually mentioned as a fix for a Win7 issue someone had, so that might all help for Win7 too.
.

that texture thing looks like a problem elsewhere... did you update the haks?

OK, so it made the game faster, but the tileset still isn't loading, and that is likely contributing a large portion of the remaining lag. I've just re-updated the hak, and have the current overrides for shit, and the current tlk files. I'm unsure of what to do now.

Just top check, did you get the critical rebuild?

Does the single player game run?

The critical rebuild is the 1.69 HotU update I was speaking of, I installed it the first thing after I installed the game itself; and no, single player still has severe lag.

I have gotten the texture packs to work, by converting all the normal textures to .tga format (or rather, downloading an override that did that for me), but the FPS is still like, 3. Not really playable by any means.

EDIT: Maybe it'd help if I posted what my graphics card is. It's an ATI mobility radeon 4650. I've read that both turning off thread optimization/hyperthreading/whatever (which I cannot figure out to do on my computer apparently, not sure my graphics card even has it), and downloading and sticking into the NwN folder an older version of my card's OpenGL driver, might help. I also can't find the driver though...

Maybe I'm just retarded from working on my server all day today and the fact that it's 3 AM here? I dunno. If anyone can tell me how to turn off thread optimization and/or gimme a link to the older openGL driver for my card, that'd be amazing.

It didn't help; I extracted the OpenGL Haxxing.zip folder into NwN's folder, but it didn't do anything noticeable. Still about 2-3 FPS.

I also tried something Gerald's player suggested, which was turning off all the movies in the game (done in the nwn.ini file), but it also didn't help.

Maybe I just can't play NwN on this computer anymore?

The only thing that's changed since I last played NwN successfully is that I installed windows 8.1, my computer blows NwN's requirements away.

If installing 8.1 is the only thing you have changed, I would suggest trying to find a copy of Windows 8 online or somewhere. I run NwN perfectly fine on it.

Yep, after updating I couldn't get it to run either, suddenly the application would not even open. For me compatibility mode Windows 8 fixed it though...

Yeah, the windows 8 compatibility mode didn't help. I can't play it on windows 8.1.

Just some random ideas to try:
* run as administrator, with win7 compatibility and disable the fancy window border scheme (aero or whatever it's called on win 8.1)
* there's a lot of posts on the net talking about turning off graphics option -> advanced -> Environment mapping on creatures. (or generally anything that sounds advanced ;)
* try renaming the nwmain.exe (see http://www.gog.com/support/neverwinter_ ... iamd_cards )
* Install the latest graphics driver (and if that doesn't help, an older version).

Good luck.

Did all of what you suggested (the environment mapping was already disabled though), still didn't seem to help :/

I will search for a way to dual-boot with windows 7, so I can use it to play NwN and stuff.

I HAVE WONNNN

I AM SO FUCKING HIGH RIGHT NOW

Ahem.

So.

The problem, for future generations to learn from, was that Windows 8.1 gave me shitty, Microsoft-created default display drivers for my graphics card, an ATI mobility radeon HD 4650. Microsoft sucks at making drivers. I got the latest ones for my graphics card (which is an admittedly old card), from AMD's website, and I have like, 60+ FPS easy, on high settings.

Thanks to everyone who helped, even though my computer ignore all your help anyway! I really appreciate it.

For the record I despise windows 8 as well. I feel your pain. I had to reconfigure and install various third party applications to get the damn thing working how an out the box operating system should be. So many hours of my life wasted for something is supposed to be designed to make life easier.

Well done to you for defeating the beast. If I were a DM I would issue you 1000 xp points.
