Dead wrote: A thread was opened less than 2 months ago. Searching lore forum ain't that hard. viewtopic.php?f=103&t=76235funny... this thread is actually a response to that thread! I didn't post there because it was too old. I completely disagree that a ranger can be of any deity.... but I can't find any lore on amia to back up my way of thinking.... and the post you are referring to reiterates my point.... there is no lore on amia to specifically state that rangers have to be of any specific deity. um... I'll just make a ranger of Orcus. Enjoy the RP.

Almost all deities have rangers. It'd be simpler to list those who don't support them, rather than those who do. Orcus, given he's a demon lord, is actually far more plausible than you'd think for granting vague, unspecified powers regarding stealth and dakka (a.k.a. 'ranger').

I can find you the page if you like but it's in the FRCS stating that a Ranger is not restricted to a limited list of deities. This isn't about Amia lore, it's about setting lore.

Actually, the F&P says that rangers are limited to nature deities like druids, but then that very same book (not to mention countless others) goes on to contradict it by listing rangers in several non-nature churches. (I'm not sure if FRCS say anything about it?) There are NPCs and orders in other books for rangers of Mystra, Bane, etc. WotC could not decide what they wanted with ranger. But yeah, the canon setting lore most consistent with the facts is that rangers can get their powers from any deity, despite some remarks to the contrary.

The ranger problem was around back in 2e as well, come to think. I'd go with the comprehensive setting sourcebook as well. It's by and large the baseline and coherent in itself.

There are dynamic and diverse interpretations of a Ranger, and the sources contradict themselves. What's set in stone, however, is that they are divinely granted. So as long as there are divine sources, you're fine.
You can be crass and sarcastic as you wish, but I've seen numerous non-nature Rangers played very well. I played a character who was a ranger of Asmodeus, and I count at least 1 other DM who's quality roleplay on his non-nature Ranger character helped earn his slot. I don't think it was nearly as cheesy or ill-received as you seem to believe is warranted.

If you want one example from FR lore. In 3rd ed. Faiths & Pantheons pg. 8, under the discription of deities abilities to grant spells it states: Quote: Most deities can grant spells from the cleric spell list, the ranger spell list and from three or more domains. Deities with levels in the druid class can grant spells from the druid spell list and deities with levels in the paladin class can grant spells from the paladin spell list. I would take that to mean that if most deities can grant ranger spells then most deities can have ranger followers. It would be safe to say you'd be fine with that ranger of Orcus
