Hardly inappropriate, because it's complete rubbish. If anything it's way too subtle.
Mush, do me a big, big favour. Roll a spellcaster and do what you are claiming to have witnessed. Hell, you know what - if you do half the list you've posted about epics killing, as you have claimed to witness, I'm paying your way up to lvl 30 in DCs.
Otherwise, please stop degrading this thread. The original question was about EMD summons balance.

I have done Epic Bosses with both the fully-buffed Geared Guardian, and a Monk-Shifter specced for Undead Shape in Spectre Form and Stone Golem (AC, immunities, HiPS, perma haste, sneak attack, etc) and can confirm that it is not quite so easy at it sounds. Many bosses can be solo-hunted but they require some strategy or another beyond "sit there and tank it." If a mage is killing a boss like Snowbeast in the time it takes for the Snowbeast to properly damage the construct EMD, that is something to say about mage damage and not the construct's abilities. Also, Beholders must be done with Construct / BBOD with some amount of care as not to die, and then I have still had the Majesty chain cast Greater Ruin up to 4 times. Undead summon? The little beholders cast HEAL. The biggest problem I can see is Construct vs The Loot/Pirate, but even then it is less a problem with EMD and more how hard The Loot doesn't hit. If anything should change, there should perhaps be a slight buff to Outsiders in their respective fields to make their specializations more apparent. Perfectly on topic, straight to the point, terse replies in image format rather than text. I would gather DM decorum to be a separate topic altogether.

Now, if your claim is "well you can't consider the summon when it's buffed! Whenever you think of these summons, you have to consider they automatically come with these buffs ESPECIALLY if we're talking pvm because mages will have these spells available and will put them on the summon before they fight. And with these buffs and raw stats, they are either too tanky or too damagy for the little investment this feat require. They're basically a walking / damaging / tanking 500+ HP damage buffer. This just depresses me into thinking that I seriously haven't got my shit together. I play an epic sorc with a Geared Guardian and have in no way seen this as an easy task.

Mushidoz is not entirely wrong. Some of the summons really are incredibly tanky, and that is all they need to be considering how good damage dealers mages can be. I used to solo most bosses with Gagis with just Gate back in the day, but Gagis makes for a better tank than any summon so he used it as a damage dealer against the Loot and other similar targets. Likewise, most mages would not even need epic summons to solo bosses, but they sure make their lives easier.
I kind of suspect the designer who made them undervalued the immunities, when immunities are actually some of the most powerful and hardest to balance things there are.
This however is a thing built in into Dungeons and Dragons and not something specific to NWN or our epic summons. Playing melee classes in PnP is pretty pointless as well, when arcane and divine spellcasters do everything better, and can summon creatures that are roughly equivalent to your melee character while they are at it. 3.X is one of the least balanced games I have ever seen, though I am not usually a big believer in balance efforts either.

Except that a summon is in no way even close to a melee character powerwise when said meleer reaches 30. In pvp you just ignore the summon, if the mage managed to buff it fully (and him/herself) then you are indeed too late.
It's a bit differant on level 21-22 perhaps as the EMD summons don't scale and are meant to service at lv 30 still so they tend to be very potent there.

Hudson wrote: Except that a summon is in no way even close to a melee character powerwise when said meleer reaches 30. Correct. A melee character does much MUCH more DPS. DPS however is not the most important thing a mage needs from a free party member. EDIT: Forgot to add that a non-dexterity-based melee'er is likely to tank less than the summon. In PnP, which is what I was talking about there, the summons literally are as good or often better than a melee character. Also, I do not comment on PvP balance, because I think trying to balance classes for one on one arena-style PvP is completely pointless and yet another design policy I strongly disagree with on Amia. I think it has led to many unfun changes and a lot of work put into a pointless and ultimately futile effort. Party balance for dungeons is what we should worry about, if anything, but even that is a mess I do not think we could ever actually perfectly fix.

I literally had a two page thesis on why the summons aren't overpowered.
This might be the greatest troll thread I've ever almost fallen into.
Simply put, it doesn't matter what you saw or think, the summons are not overpowered, the immunities are there so that they are even simply useful at all, and melee characters can easily solo things as well. It takes skill, not raw numbers, to solo. Sometimes, that means being skilled in how you build your numbers, and then skilled in how you execute them; sometimes it means knowing what spells to use. Either way, casters and their summons are not OMGWTFBBQ-level, and I personally believe melee is more powerful than a caster on average, including every summon you can think of, except for -exactly- one special summon, which is not an epic feat summon.

Yeah, well... unfortunately, but not suprisingly, this thread is now gone.
Before some nice DM will put this pain to an end and lock the Troll-land (thanks in advance) I ask only that someone with a bit of time and a bit of balance guru knowledge take a look on the current state of EMD and if he/she finds it appropriate - balance it out so we see something more than a damn golems and undead pharaon guards everywhere.

Party balance for dungeons is what we should worry about, if anything, but even that is a mess I do not think we could ever actually perfectly fix. I have trouble with the PnP comparison here, as a 'round' in PnP is effectively a much shorter thing than it is in NWN. Not literally; A round is six seconds in both. But spells that count in rounds are essentially encounter spells, not things that cover an entire dungeon. A level 30 spell at round/level duration is only 180 seconds; 3 minutes. Yes I'm aware mummy dust is in turns (or hours), but that seemed to be talking about more than just mummy dust. Even in turns, that's only 30 minutes. Also, the mummy dust spell (assuming it is this one in the SRD: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/spells/mummyDust.htm , I never actually played an epic caster in tabletop...), is -quite- a bit weaker. Two CR8 mummies? 120 HP? I do agree with the balance thing though. No one class should be able to totally trump the others in all PvP cases, but as long as that's not the case PvP should mostly just favor the prepared (which it does). I find it sorta saddening 'prepared' in NWN mostly just means buffed (since the buffs mostly trump strategy), but it is what it is. PvE balance, where every class has a role and is fun to play, should be the goal. But the point some are making here is that the mages don't really need a party, they have a pocket tank (and a rogue familiar). That's basically what the entire argument against increasing the power of EMD boils down to: It's already badass, it doesn't need more. There is some difference of opinion on exactly how powerful it is (everyone said the summon fails compared to a level 30 melee-er... but then Hudson just posted if the EMD is fully buffed you're too late, which I take to mean he thinks a level 30 melee-er might have trouble with it). If anything, if the construct is that much better than the rest, it should probably be toned *down*, rather than the rest up. The summons, even fully buffed, should not be a replacement for a party member. The summons is NOT the main source of damage for a mage; The majority of it comes from the extra damage and attacks they are providing to the group they are with. The DPS their summons provides pales in comparison to the extra damage and survivability they provide to the party. The idea that a mage's DPS comes from their summons is, I think, part of the reason the summons are unbalanced in the first place.

Gagis's familiar is/was a pixie, and she made having rogues with me in dungeons redundant. That might make for an interesting discussion for some other thread. Having both a tank and a rogue at my disposal made playing a DPS-focused gunship sorcerer amusingly one-sided, though the summon system has been changed countless times since I leveled Gagis. The regular summons were tanky enough back then already.

We don't generally balance around PvP. Its far easier to balance around PvE. While some PvP considerations are nice, to help put things into perspective, its ultimately not what we look at.
If there's a glaring, broken ability that guarantees PvP success or something weird, we might look into it. But generally, there's far too many variables to balance against when you're considering another player, his gear sets, and his chosen combination of levels. ~~~~
There are admittedly places, even epic bosses, where an EMD will shine-- such as the Pirate and his Loot. And please don't misunderstand me, I'm fine with discussing the balance of these little guys, but it shouldn't be done through exaggerated examples.
I have to also generally agree with the pixie, having played both a rogue and a pixie-wielding saucerer. Would rightfully be a neat discussion elsewhere!

Curius how this turned out to be. First of, i dont agree that Epic summons are OP,bit unbalanced perhaps why? I play a wm,he has 52AB unbuft using standard gear and 50 ac, now count in bufs and INPR expertise +UMD and you have somting that can stand his own against 50% of the Epic bosses((without having epic items)) and dare i say, he kills normal mobs(fully hasted+buft)) allot faster then i'v Sean any mage do. Mages will always be able to SOLO epic bosses, i once followed a Spelsword around,he knew the server, knew every trick in the book and killed nearly all the epic bosses without even using epic summons to tank. Even beleave Hashim or whatever his name is,is a WM aswel and he aint done to poorly for himself ((could be wrong here)) Or Rolde and Jerand the boss hunting Paladins, i'm sure there laughing right now and hoping none noticed how easely they wipe bosses. My point is that if you know the server, know how to build a PC and the limitations of classes/Combo's you can build Powerful pc's that aren't mages or a combination of and still be able to hunt epic bosses. Thumps up for derailing my own topic there And i claim the LOOK i'm here from 2006 so all knowing price!! Dont you dare prove me wrong!! Jokes aside Perhaps i should refrase my question into this ---> is the Epic dragon knight/red dragon viable <---

Shifters are far stronger, yo. From what someone said above, with the summons soloing the elemental and taking little to no damage, That makes them equal. And that's with you a human directing the shifter (using what shape?), and the NWN engine directing the summon, which would lead me to believe the summon is stronger on paper than the similar shifter shape. This is not to say the shifter class isn't strong, btw. The versatility alone makes the class stronger than the summon, but comparing a class to a summon is silly. That should be no comparison. *poof* Did someone say shifter About to leave for work but summons are stronger on paper for some reasons, I thought I would bring up a quote from a old thread from sune where a player basicly wanted a copy of a epic SD summon feat form. Quote: I can't realistically make you a form worth it compared to your undead shapes; it's simply a nightmare to balance it well enough. Giving PCs the shade drain is simply too much as well, because it only works as it is does because of the restriction to 2 attacks per round and that it's not controlled by a human mind. The human mind plays a large factor vs a AI, for giggles a DM once spawned I think it was 40-50 Pirates on me at the same time.... I won, because with my DR/regen and human thinking... I ran to a location where I could only be attacked from the front so only about 3-5 could hit me at a time instead of like all of them, the AI cant do that. Yes Shifter forms on paper are weaker but summons/monsters cant swap gear or think. OK off to work.

There are arguments in this thread that state both sides of the story; the summon loses, and the summon wins. This sounds pretty balanced to me. It's not supposed to win all the time, nor is it supposed to lose all the time. But if your dice are good, and you know how to utilise skills and abilities your character has, you're going to be laughing your way through bosses. If not; you'll be bitching on the forum about it.

A lot of people talk about it, including myself at times. Its a more natural thing to think about. Its how most PvP compatible games tend to be balanced, and its also a potential scenario when a person can be very vulnerable or more helpless than a PvE scenario. But even though its mentioned, by both DM's and players alike, the end of the day solutions come from PvE balancing, with a few exceptions of abilities/classes/spells that become too consistently potent when against a player. ~~~ As for Epic Dragon Knight, it has become considerably more viable with its decreased size.
