So then, I'll be the one to say this in a dedicated thread. We have concerns that involve the DMs that we are not very good at voicing for whatever reason, and that needs to change.
I know what the main concern is: "I am worried that my point is just going to annoy the staff member in question and be dismissed."
But the problem is that if we maintain this attitude then all that it is going to foster between the DM staff and player base is resentment. The players are going to treat the team poorly in the end and the team is just going to avoid us for it, because we really don't want to hang out with people whom treat us badly.
I would like not to see this happen. There are people whom are annoyed/frustrated/disappointed in one another and it could have been by way of communication and dialogue. I just had this problem personally and I've spoken to a DM regarding it. They aren't going to bite and if these problems exist they want to know so that they can resolve them for the enjoyment of their player base.
So I'm going to say this: If you are worried that you are not going to be acknowledged and your concerns dismissed outright, please don't be. Speak up to a member of staff in private whom is most relevant to the problem. You will get an actual discussion and you may very well walk out of it feeling like you've done some good for the player base.
And I've said that, so I'm going to do this: If you have a concern you're just to worried about bringing up and you're of the opinion that talking about it will just make you a nervous wreck or cause more problems for you personally than it solved shoot me a PM. I will be the voice them for you in a way that will provide dialogue and see what happens. I can't guarantee that I'm going to be solving everyone's problems or anything like that, but I think this animosity that some of the players and staff feel needs to stop.
I think we need to not worry so much about it and get back to enjoying ourselves.

Every DM interaction I have ever had on Amia has been neutral at worst, but the majority has been positive. I guess I just haven't been hanging around the right (wrong?) people these past weeks?

I admit that this trend is making me worried that people are neglecting the game in favor of the forum dramatics, or getting so involved in Improving Amia that they forget to play in/enjoy Amia.
I've been steppin' up my DM time myself people have been contacting me and times are being set. I'm actually quite excited to be working on stuff IG again.
If it weren't for important stuff being posted on certain subforums, I'd be off the forums completely. I'm getting tired of people bitching about DMs the way they are, looking for a purely IG reason as to why, even if some issues I see myself with the DM team, I'm echoing this loudly:

Can we all just drop it and talk to the DMs if we have problems with them? Thanks and goodbye, I'm getting tired of meta threads and then the meta threads about meta threads.

If there actually was some super serious rash of DMs being abusive assholes, all this hysteria would be understandable. (Not enjoyable, but understandable.) But there doesn't seem to be that. 99% of the complaining lately seems to be about nebulous "server culture" problems that have no cause, no specifics, and no solution other than just "please be nice to me." I'm not so much bothered by it as I am just simply mystified. It's a bandwagon, a vicious spiral, like we're all stuck in an echo chamber and all we can hear is everyone else complaining, so we assume we should be complaining too. I too am ready to be done with all the drama.

I'm with Laktavian on this one, no idea where this is stemming from. I've never had trouble talking to the DMs, any of them at all. They've always been helpful

I'm still in the new boat - I'll keep it saying it. This is the best server around and I've been around the block more times than a four dollar hooker in the NWN world.
Every server I've been on - EVERY ONE - you will at some point get ignored by the DMs or feel you're not getting specific amount of attention etc.. <add grievance> Amia's no different. I just got chaffed by a DM on Sunday - it happens. Until you get one DM for every player it will happen.

The best advice I have seen here all week. Hear hear!
This is also why factions seem to get so much attention. They are full of people who actively create content. The DM's just need to fill in every now and then when the content touches the surrounding world.

Oh my god, this made me start thinking and it was far from this trend I wanted to start with my original post! just hope it wasn't what started this all.
Amians, we're here to have fun, and the DM's are here to help us having fun (while having fun themselves) as well, I think everyone should just remember that there's another person behind each login that all have this same goal, and if you remember this I think things should go alright eventually.
Never meant my post about DM plots to end with this, I managed to start a discussion and it ended (not trying to take the credit for it) with a discussion between the DM's and the war knights, leading to a small blossoming for them, I am satisfied.

As warm and fuzzy as it is to see all the posts in support of the staff and saying "why can't people stop worrying and just play" I do feel that I have to point out the those posts also serve to inflate the matter and ensure it's continuance. I don't mean to sound ungrateful here but
I'm actually surprised these kinds of topics have taken this long to materialize on Amia. I've noticed over the last few years that every MMO I've play has forums FILLED with complaining from the unhappy 2% of that game's population. The advent of social media has made it perfectly viable to express EVERY complaint, take EVERY situation personally, & immediately air it so the like-minded minority can pile on. It was only a matter of time before that mind-set took over web forums, as well.
While I haven't played much lately (but have spent my fair share of time on the islands over the years), I can say that I've not had a bad experience with a DM & few bad experiences with other players. I've played characters from now 'defunct' factions (including characters who wore black & green clothing *gasp*, hung out too much with dead things, & one hailing from a country that rhymes with 'Say'...) & have seen very little to deter me from playing ANY type of character, getting involved in ANY situation, or deterring me from enjoying Amia in ANY way.
Glim is right. While I agree with the gist of the message - it is generally easy to deal with DMs - this is one bandwagon going in the opposite direction that's a little too easy to hop on.
Expressing criticism in public has its upsides and downsides. I'm sure we all know the downsides, but it enables players to cross the threshold without facing the team privately, behind the scenes. You can imagine it's intimidating to challenge, in PMs, a team of eloquent, authoritative veterans who, presumably, stand behind their collective decisions together. There's no guarantee a private message ever even gets acknowledged and discussed, because it disappears into the depths of the DM forums out of player sight.
So yes, while it is generally more efficient and productive to deal with DMs personally, I can see why people who either do not have faith in the team, are intimidated of standing alone, or want to influence and address the opinions of other players as well, would consider public topics a better medium. Sometimes people go too far or choose the wrong medium for the occasion, but dismissive shouts of "shut up and get in game" are equally bad at solving anything.

I feel sure you weren't referring to my comment at that, because I think people can and should express themselves in whatever way they want to, but also expect to reap any consequences that come from doing so. But I just wanted to make sure that my statement above is just a worry that I have, not an imperative statement to players.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular, which is probably a bad generalisation from me. I fully agree with your point. It just seems that people are eager to band together in what is ultimately a good cause, but don't notice that in doing so they're collectively dictating what are appropriate topics to discuss and acceptable feelings to express. Noct'uul's post above me was a good example of a well-meaning post that I think nonetheless has potentially darker aspects - supposing that dissenters make up a 2% minority, or saying that we should collectively move on to more productive things. I reckon we should be mindful of the flipside.

I've been a part of amia for a very long time, and this current batch of DMs is one of the most transparent and accessible group i've ever seen.
Thats not to say there were problems with former DMs, and I've only ever had a problem with one based on a twinkling disagreement (I don't remember the specifics now, it was like 5 or so years ago, sizeable gift to a new quellar member to get them on their feet, no prior relations. Made IC sense but broke ooc rules, punishment was given and all parties moved on).
But my view has always been that the DMs are volunteering their time for our enjoyment, and no matter what happens we should be grateful for that.

While I don't disagree that it is wonderful that people are willing to take on more responsibility for others to improve the game as far as I see it that is also what faction leaders and many players do. Further it is for our enjoyment sure, but lets be clear on a few things. Its not something any DMs are forced into doing or even have to do if they don't want (I say this because often times it is seeming to be made to seem like their is some great sacrifice being made when there really isn't).
Further on the point of the volunteering... it really isn't though, well at least it isn't unrewarded volunteer work as they are "paid" in DCs (at something like 1 per 4 hours spent on the DM client if I recall?) further it is a position that allows for a great deal of reward in terms of getting to run plots, tell stories and do RP on a large scale. It seems like there is a sentiment that you can't like DMing or it is a sacrifice that is being made and so nothing negative should be said because of that.
People play because people like to play, people DM because they like to do that too, its really as simple as that.
Do we enjoy what we do? Yeah I'd say most of us do, wouldn't be here if we didn't. However, there's also the fact that part of the job is dealing with a lot of things we -don't- enjoy, it is work, and far more of it than a faction leader deals with. If a player doesn't feel like logging on one day, no problem, they don't have to. As a DM we have obligations and commitments to adhere to, even on the days when when we'd rather not be here.
As for the payment, to me at least it amounts to little because I have nothing I care to spend the DC's on, I could honestly go without it and not be affected, Others may have a different take, but that's my stance on it. So I'm not here just because of the DC's and I doubt anyone else is either.
The job is a sacrifice that is made, because we want to help better this community and are willing to work to do so. If that wasn't the case, no one would turn it down.

A choice yes, and one that many would and do not choose, but it is not a sacrifice (or at least it should not ever be) if you are saying that you feel you are giving up more than you are getting back by being a DM, that is is something you are sacrificing then maybe (and I don't mean this in any negative way) you shouldn't be a DM, but rather do the thing you like doing better instead. There are many who would far more happily take up the mantle I'm sure and who would not view it as a sacrifice.
I'm not certain why you are the authority on this. Seeing as you have not to my knowledge been a DM on this server, and have a quite limited perspective on what it is we actually do with our time as is evidenced heavily in the bulk of your postings within the various improving Amia threads and so on.
Seeing as you are more than willing to offer criticism, despite or in spite of your limited perspective, I would ask quite sincerely and without intent to mock or jest, why you believe yourself to be an authority on these matters to the extent you have displayed thus far.

I never claimed to be an authority, nor do I think myself one, however I do have a fair amount of experience with DMs and DMing in general (Amia isn't the only server out there nor NWN the only game). And it is from my own experience that I choose to offer what are my own thoughts (I do not think that I have tried to portray them as anything but that).
And my own thoughts are that if you don't like doing something, feel you are sacrificing for it, feel in any way like it isn't worth it, then you probably shouldn't be doing it (and that applies to all things).
I'm not saying that DMing is easy or that it can't be a pain in the ass. Frankly you have to put up with a lot of shit that you might not care for, but all the same there are still people who like doing it and don't feel like it is a sacrifice. It is those people in my opinion who should do it.
I don't agree with all The Great Equalizer said, but it's true that the common "Just be grateful that DMs volunteer at all" is a poor excuse - even though it does mean DMs deserve to be cut some slack and treated respectfully as fellow humans. But it's worth noting that it isn't something I often see DMs saying - they seem well aware of the complexities of their situation and don't portray themselves as martyrs. (If they do, call them out for it, no problem.) Rather, it's a comment usually thrown by players who want to express their support. I think it's tasteless cheerleading, no matter how good the intention. The DMs can stand up for themselves, they don't need players making crude simplifications of their status to defend them. Maybe that's just personal taste, though - I get very awkward when people try to stand up for me, because it feels patronising and as if they're putting words in my mouth.

I admit I raise this issue to make a point, and that point is very simple. Despite what my forum tag tells you, I have actually been here on this server in one guise or another pretty much since it split from Arelith. I have seen these concerns raised many, many times. Mostly from the perspective of a player, since that's where the vast bulk of my time has been spent. I admit, even I was guilty at one time of the "Us vs Them" mentality. Much has changed since I've been here, recruiting standards for DM's have improved drastically, the very real abuses of the distant past were done away with a long time ago. Despite this however, the same thing keeps happening, over, and over, and over. It is only natural to feel that way when one group can exert apparent power over another, it's human nature. But it is very important to realize that we are all of us here because we enjoy this game, period. We have common interests, and very little to truly be divided on.
I realize that you are making your own points in an effort to do what you yourself think is best and right, but please understand, we could make all the changes in the world, bow to every concern, but as long as the DM's hold power over the players, which is how the game is played, this recurring issue will never go away.
We are a community, there is no "Us" there is no "Them" just "We" and until that fact is fully realized the cycle is never going to break.
I realize that you are making your own points in an effort to do what you yourself think is best and right, but please understand, we could make all the changes in the world, bow to every concern, but as long as the DM's hold power over the players, which is how the game is played, this recurring issue will never go away.
That is absolutely true and deserves emphasis. You can't do more than listen to concerns, weigh the arguments and do what you think is best. Many people are wired to fight the power, and it's not complacency to admit that someone will always be unhappy. (Of course, that won't stop me, personally, from pushing when I know I'm right. )
Anyhow, I am getting rather far from the original point, which was contact with DMs. I can see the merits of having another player speak for you, confronting DMs privately, or posting in public. No reason to stigmatise in favor of another.

i think my opinions are clouded by the fact that the DM staff actively engages drow players and has people devoted to the underdark, rather than having some members who actively hate it and refused to work with them (from what i understand, a lot to do with how some players treated the DMs, but it was a 2 way street)
So with that, theres no way I can be unhappy with the current DM team compared to how it was in the past.

Hehe. You may not remember, but you said something almost exactly like this to me once and at the time it shut me up. I thought a lot about it over the years. Just thought you might want to know I remember and also thought I could point out to others that you've been very consistent with this opinion for a long time.

I am reminded of Plutarch's disgust with democracies, and the question of why any sensible government would have the wisest and most informed of its citizens debate the best future for the people only to have the lowest common denominator make the decision for them instead. (Not that I'm comparing DMs to the wisest and most informed, but your statement made me think of that, anyway.)
1sac·ri·fice noun \ˈsa-krə-ˌfīs, also -fəs or -ˌfīz\ : the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone
: an act of killing a person or animal in a religious ceremony as an offering to please a god
: a person or animal that is killed in a sacrifice
Sacrifice...a very old word that over the centuries has taken on many meanings and can be used in many contexts. Choice, is it not a decision over another? Time, is it not spent in one way or another? For every action is there not another? In a sense of the words meaning today we sacrifice many things. The word sacrifice in most of today's society holds no true meaning to what the real meaning derived from. Ex: Dm and PC's have a event planned on a certain day. In RL DM gets a call from a friend who came in town they have not seen in a while. Well, seems like that DM has a decision to make. Does he say fuck it, and go hang out with buddies and reschedule event for another day? Or tell his buddies tomorrow night there free? Sounds to me like a DM has a choice to make. Golly gee folks! What will the Dm decide? What will be there final choice!? Who's fun shall they sacrifice?
Sacrifice- the act of giving something up...
Whether it be PC or DM, both sacrifice something each time they to log in on Amia.
This will be my last chiming in towards any of this, i'm done adding fuel to the fire. Keep twisting and bending words i'll have no more part in it.

:p I remember that, and I'm glad to know that it had some impact in it being something that you seemed to take to heart. And that at the very least I managed to convey my meaning, even if my phrasing might not always be clear. It was meant to be and still is meant to be words not given out of malice but out of wanting people to consider what they are doing and if it is what they truely want to be doing.
I'm going to regret wading into this one, I know it...
I like the DMs. They're good folk. Generally good-humoured, not so stuck up their own ass they can't see a point. That being said, there's one thing that pisses me right off that you guys seem to do with regularity:
Make people feel ignored.
Stop. Stop typing. Stop formulating your response of "this has been said before, they are busy, blah blah blah". This is a problem, and whatever the reasons or justifications are, this problem exists and has been cited by more than just myself. Problems need to be resolved and not explained away or justified, and to do that requires an adequate exploration of the problem itself, preferably with examples. The DMs are big boys and girls, they can handle constructive criticism like adults.
I don't like being kept waiting for days, weeks, or even months (all actual timeframes I've experienced) in getting a response. I doubt many people do. It's frustrating beyond belief to have a character's actions hinge on interactions with a DM and then have that DM space on you for a few days before getting around to your questions. It annoys me when I send DMs messages about followup for things that happened that night and don't get a response for three days- it feels like my desire to play and contribute isn't being respected (I know it's not the case, but it's still damn frustrating).
Are the DMs overloaded with spam? That sucks, and I'm sorry to hear that. I can't fix that, however. All I can do is point out extant problems and explore them as best I can in the hopes that those with power may find my analysis useful or stimulating in resolving those problems.
I'll give a couple examples, and I'm going to ask that you do not respond to these specific examples to tell me why I shouldn't be annoyed about them- I am posting them because they annoyed me (they do not annoy me now- really, don't try to handwave them).
1. Corinn's potion widget update. Sorry Glim, I can see you rolling your eyes. I'm going to disclaim again: I am not presently annoyed about this and am citing it as something that did cause annoyance and should be taken into account. It looks more than a little bad when what is literally a fifteen minute copypaste script job can't get done in four months. It makes the team look incompetent, though that is not the case. It also drives people (me at least) up the wall when other simple things like this take weeks or months to get done. It's especially annoying when I get reassurances like "It'll be in the next update" and it doesn't happen (also something that occurred)- that's just straight-up lying to me and smacks of sloppy management somewhere along the line.
2. The utter lack of response on offering to work with the team as a 3d modeler. I know for a fact you don't have someone that can do what I do on the team, and I've offered repeatedly (and been sponsored by developers) to join the team and actually take on specific projects and requests to make custom content for the server. It drove me insane that I was cranking out free high-quality player heads one after another to try to show you guys how much I wanted to contribute and yet got absolutely no response to my inquiries for months (or ever). It was, frankly, insulting and made me feel like I was not valued. It made me feel so unwanted that I left for a few months.
Why did these things annoy me? Because both were borne out of my investment in the server and my interest in contributing. These are by far the most dangerous things to ignore- goodwill scorned/ignored makes people far more upset than calling them out for being a jerk.
Are the DMs very busy? Sure they are. Communication is a big problem, though, and you need to fix it (because I can't). I don't know how, either- your server environment is particular to you and my solutions or suggested solutions would be more ill-informed than those you could suggest. However you decide to fix it, I feel that leaving players feeling ignored to an excessive extent is the worst option and should be avoided.
As an aside, players should also try to respect that the DMs are busy as hell. Nowadays I try to send a preliminary request like "I have some stuff that needs a response, can I send it to you?" to give the DM a chance to say "No, I am busy, send it to someone else" or "I am busy, don't expect a quick response". I'm fine with either of those and really appreciate getting that feedback, even though it's not what I'm looking for. I encourage other players to do that as well.
Zanthair wrote:

Being a DM is a commitment to the players first and foremost. If a DM (or in this case a DM team) is pissing off one or more players, then that DM or team may need to adjust what they're doing (assuming the player is pissed off about something legitimate). Ignoring or handwaving those problems doesn't cut it because it just lets the problem (and resentment) fester unchecked. DMs don't get a free pass on action or inaction because they're DMs (they know this, I'm saying this to players), and I'd think more than a few of them would be annoyed if they did.
Communication is one of the very worst and most nagging problems of servers like this (in my experience anyway), to the point where I actually had a communications manager position on staff when I ran a PW (it helped). It does need to be dealt with directly and assiduously or you're going to keep seeing annoyance, ragequits and forumspam because of it. I'm not trying to call anyone out here or comment on my own pending communications *shifty eyes*, so please don't take this in any way as an attack post. I am quite fond of the DM team except Nivo, he's a poopyhead.

I dunno about anyone else but I would be a lot happier if I got any response at all rather than none. "Sorry but I'm busy" "Sorry I/we can't do this because x", "I'll get back to you within ___, if not poke me." I realise this is genuinely easier said than done, because often one looks at a PM, decides they'll give such and such response shortly, and then it gets lost in the shuffle. But it would be nice.

Definitely what I've thought has happened. I don't know how many this applies to, but I found my personal attitude got a lot better once I started assuming the DMs have legitimate reasons to not get back to you quickly or that it's simply an honest mistake. I kinda doubt anyone (well, almost anyone) is overlooked intentionally. Funnily enough, once I started treating the DMs with much more patience and humility on my end the day-to-day interactions and continued plot involvement got better as well. I still get grumpy if it's unusually or unreasonably long, but I do want to urge players to not fall victim to the idea that you're being ignored on purpose or that the team has so little account for you that they're not going to respond. That'll just make things worse for you, really.

If you are waiting on a reply and think it may have been passed over, poke us for an update.
Remember that we DMs are outnumbered by players and the work load at times can be immense behind the screen. Things can often fall by the wayside without us realizing it. Amia's continued success as a server is largely the reason for this. Lots of players and everyone would like something at some point.
My advice is to keep on us and be patient, a simple reciprocation of our own actions with the playerbase. I think relations will be fine in this regard if this is done ending in an even higher ratio of over than we already enjoy as a community.

Actually, I've been cursed out directly by the DM for doing that, which is why I don't. I still consider said DM a friend, so no I will not name names.

NC: If you wait a week and hear nothing back from any of us, feel free to poke.
A week is generally not an obnoxious amount of time to wait for a reply or to poke someone for an update if you haven't heard back. Also, it is not meant to be a fix-all, but as with all social issues, a fix-all does not exist. It is just a way to simply improve relations.

If it was along the lines of 'eff you, I haven't done it yet' - consider it a joke

You should name names to the DM team because it is not acceptable.
