It seems that AOES such as fireball don't affect party members but the caster here on Amia? My "helper" insisted on playing a wizard and has been doing pretty good so far (insists on getting into melee though - bad).
Anyway! She threw a fireball at some wererats yesterday, no problem! Wait, your character is dead! The log says "Character kills character." "Character is dead" I laughed but wondered about that.
Somebody playing "Gregory" helped her back up while I was frantically porting to town (but couldn't port back for some reason eh.. another thread?) for scrolls.

Should hit all. Maybe those who did not get hit either reflex saved or spell resisted it.

They don't affect party members.
Also you should put these questions in the general questions thread.

Correction, dont hit other players or their summons (hellball exempt). The caster and his or her summons can be hit, including dominated monsters. Which is always fun for the squishy char next to it.
I believe it was made this way to stop people trolling their party members.

To avoid trolling party members is the sole reason?

No need to be sorry - trolling is a process of being a... problem, to others, for fun.
Example: *casts fireball killing all party members by "missing"* - Sorry! *laughs*

I'm attempting to think of an example of "trolling a party member" where an AOES would be necessary to damage the spell caster?
On another angle - I'm thinking that if you wanted to go for total "realism" (as far as a fantasy game goes) - all AOES would affect everyone in the radius. Fireball for example would affect monsters, party members - anyone caught in the radius. Just like PnP.

Yes, but then it would be so very frowned upon no one would bother going blaster mage in PvE. It's not a matter of avoiding realism, but to avoid griefing and blaster-casters being unplayable due to friendly casualties.

I play blaster-casters.
I also play buffers, crowd-controllers and all other various kinds of arcanists. :3

Yes! It was more to illustrate a point of variety.

Of course not every build works well with every type of spells, but it does not disallow you to cast them
