Articles from Rico Ondenfare's various research in to the Shadowplane. Unsorted and sporadic.

Some of the pages require a light source to read.

"Estimated date: 16th of Tarsakh, 1378 DR.

~It has been two days since I last drank, the pressure my body feels in this section of the Shadow Plane makes me feel as if I'm being pushed head-first in to the ground. I have been lucky to not encounter any Shades the day before, as the encounter of the 14th broke my Shadesteel Shortsword, so I'm having to cope with using only my Banshee's Breath.

~A small Oasis lay before me, however the water is very tainted, moreso than others I have drunk from in recent months. I collect a small vial of it before cupping my hands and drinking at it. By Yondalla is it foul, it tastes like still, stale ale going down my throat, burning me somewhat during the journey. After a few more drinks, I feel disgusted, but my thirst is quenched. To encounter such a tainted water source, perhaps it's best if I inspect some of the landmarks nearby to see what the similarities would be to the Prime Material.

~
Not far away from the Oasis, I find a small mountain with a rather foreboding cave. It would not be a keen interest of mine if it were not for the small trails of water leaving the mouth. Scaling the mountain seems an adequate goal.

~It was a mistake. I stand roughly half a mile away from the mountain now, barely escaping with my life. There was a monster in there, one I had not witnessed before. It walked on all four limbs, had a long, sleek cone-like head... it was large- no, huge. A couple of shadow tendrils flung themselves wildly from its body, a body of which composed of a very dense shadow. One detail I will not forget were its joints, glowing with some sort of energy, as if they were so heavy or perhaps weak for the creature, it could not walk without them. Lastly, it had dim, white eyes that seemed to pierce through the darkness, some form of True Seeing I believe. It lunged itself forward at me, it did not have to think about who I was or what I could do. This attack threw me completely off-guard, I had to dodge and weave to avoid its deadly claws, ones I could tell contained the same properties as many of the shades here. I was unprepared, it has been a while since I drank a potion that protected me from negative energy, so I could not risk getting hit.

~
I began to scale down the mountain fending this beast off. Its tendrils made up for the distance its claws could not reach as it tried to maintain balance during its descent. If it were not for a loose rock upon which I stepped, this monster would have killed me. I instinctively kept running, though it did not pursue me any more. I am left exhausted and confused, I need to sleep this off."

~If yesterday's fiasco did not scar my mind with the visage of this beast, today certainly would. I decided to visit the Oasis again to drink before moving on, where I was greeted with a Cow. I had not encountered such a scenario before, but it's one all to known to the inhabitants of the Shadow Plane. Sometimes, a wild animal may stumble upon a Planar gate to the Shadow Plane, unknowingly walking to a land of its demise. I, however, found this to be an omen of good luck. I withdrew a vial and began to milk the Cow whilst it drank from the Oasis. I knew the faster I could drink the fresh milk, the more I would feel less sick from drinking from the Oasis. I also knew that this was the first piece of untainted meat I have encountered since I left Shadowscape, I would have to kill and eat this animal before something else does.

~And it seems they did. Upon milking the Cow, I walked back to my Backpack to inspect the contents for anything I could carry raw meat in to. I was greeted with a push of wind behind me and a fearsome low growl, followed by the squealing of the Cow I had only just turned away from. As I turned to see what happened, the sound of splashing water was muffling out the sounds of a struggle going on within the Oasis. It was the beast, the tendrils were the first and only thing I saw about it today, they all rose at once and flung themselves at the Cow, displaying a powerful burst of negative energy much like my Shade Lord would do upon impact. I turned and fled, being unarmed without protection from such a thing would be suicide to stay. I decided not to stop this time, I simply ran in a north-westerly direction until I knew I was far, far away from the beast."

"Estimated date: 12th of Flamerule, 1380 DR.

~Research goes smoothly today, however my appetite does not. I have not eaten for a while, few animals have crossed paths with me, however this changed as morning would brake on the Prime Material. A Cow stood before me, one that I discovered to have not bred. As I put it out of its misery, scraping away the hide to get to the meat, I recalled the monster that I fought two years ago.

~It was powerful, it was a Shade of no other I have seen since then. The Phane was one of even more power but... why is it my thought process wishes to end that sentence with "even more power than I can control"? Do I desire a shadow whom is powerful enough to overwhelm my enemies? The beast is less powerful than the Phane, but a powerful one still... Perhaps looking in to the summoning of this beast would prove to be benefiting."

"Date: 7th of Nightal, 1381 DR.

~I revisited this journal to find some information I wrote on the geology of the Shadow Plane when I was reminded of the beast. After my journey yielded no evidence of my father's whereabouts, I seemed to have forgotten that I was, at heart, researching the environment for my studies too. The beast remains one of the mysteries I have since pushed to the back of my mind... however, as I stir from the libraries and desire to practice my dancing techniques in the Prime Material, perhaps it would be best to see if I am able to summon the beast should it still dwell and thrive in the Shadow Plane...

... what was the incantation again..."

[A large thesis lay on Rico's desk, wrapped and bound. It simply has the title: "Shadowbathing" labelled.]
