Now I've had this in my mind a long time and I can't decide. I have a Ogrillion Barbarian and I can't decide whether to have him worship Tempus or Uthgar. I thought Uthgar originally, but after reading about him I don't understand what he's even about besides just being a barbarian. Anybody have a bit more information? Everything I read just tells me that it's different between each tribe. That's all I get really. It doesn't explain in a way that I'm getting it.

Tempus is the God o War. Ye can be a barbarian, a noble savage as a worshipper of Uthgar, as a Tempus follower you're merely dedicated to slaying on the field of battle! 8)

Northmen really really hate Orcs... So Uthgar should be out of the question. Hell Tempus kind of is too...

You're an Ogrillion, be a real one, not a 'civilized' human wannabee. Worship Gruumsh and be proud of your heritage!

But seriously now, folks. As to the original question: Uthgar is a war god much like Tempus, yes, but he's moreover specifically a patron god of the Uthgardt people, a race of humans. Worshipping him as a non-Uthgardt would be odd, and as an orc-blood even more so. It would make about as much sense as your ogrillion worshipping Moradin: there's no rule against it, but it would be a bizarre cultural anomaly.

Are you absolutely against it, or willing to give it a try?

It's been my experience that the overly perfect and unique-by-background (not personality) character concepts I play fail, but the simple ones surprisingly blossom. If the deity isn't that interesting to you, maybe make the character interesting by investing more in his personality? Or switch it up and play a plain human who happens to be Uthgardt?

Just some ideas. Hope you have fun :)

Not necessarily. Tempus doesn't really have much of an interest in race so much as your ability to uphold his dogma and to do battle with honor.

Baghtru is the main one in the orcish pantheon that ogrillons or more savage orc tribes gravitate to. He is one of Gruumsh's sons but refuses to wear armor and uses this claw like weapon that fits over his hands as he sees using armor and shield as weakness. What you could do is say you worship an orcish diety and then as he meets people he slowly adopts a human god perhaps tempus as a patron.

That would work, I mean I'm kinda worshipping Tempus at the moment (Don't have the actual deity in my deity box), but he's seeming to be the best at of everyone I think of. I've tried different roots and it always leads back to Tempus. I know it's not what a regular ogrillion would do, but that was kinda the point. He's a different Ogrillion than most and that was his original selling point for me to play him, and I've had fun with him, but the Deity thing was bugging me a bit. Only thing now is he's settling into Tempus too fast or something. Idk If I feel like I don't have enough freedom with him or something, I'm not sure. Right now I play him as an Ogrillion who speaks in simple phrases and grunts because he dislikes having to speak in common, even though he has no problem doing so (Not a low intelligence ogrillion). He's does mostly what he wants but tries to stay honorable, but he was a wicked temper particularly to those who think he's stupid or insult him, though he's heard it so much from elves he's learned to shrug off their insults a bit more than other races. I'm not sure if I should back pedal him a bit and start with an orc deity first, or just keep heading straight to Tempus. If Uthgar doesn't like orcs than that's completely off the table.

I'd start with considering his breeding and ask why he isn't at this moment being used by some orc tribe? There has to be a reason for that. Honor is a thing that to me is not exactly attached to the whole good or evil thing. You can be an honorable warrior and be evil as a Balrog of Morgoth. Maybe say you give at least lip service to an orcish god or the whole pantheon as a whole and maybe find a tempurian to have them take you under their wing while you struggle with your old convictions. I sorta did this with Dirgesh although it was an easier thing for him being from Sigil, being a bleaker, and also not an Ogrillon. As far as Tempus accepting you I dont see why he wouldnt myself.

In all honesty, Tempus can be fine with orcs, Uthgar not so much. I'd go with Tempus. He's a very common, very stereotypical (Re: easy to play) war deity, if you're not sure of what you want.

Alternatively, worship Garagos and slaughter anyone you meet that doesn't pay tribute to you with food. I'd love to see that.

Pantheons in the Realms are racial and regional. Sure, you can worship foreign gods, but I don't see why you would. Ogrillon is half-orc, half-ogre, so the two relevant pantheons are the orc pantheon and the giant pantheon (ogres being giants).

For the giant deities, you will want the 1995 book Giantcraft. Some googling should lead you to a copy easily enough. I am not at home so I can't check, but there might be something in Faiths & Pantheons too.
