You may recognize the spell you were hit with, but that has nothing to do with recognizing the casting of said spell.

Which is not the issue, because you couldn't do that without Spellcraft anyway. It's all just "obidae blablah" until you see the effect.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said, just worded differently.

I could not for the life of me before find a helm I was told about. Supposedly there is a skull hood one with the option to remove and replace the hood and/or skull portion? Is that true? And if so, how do I pull it up in the toolset?

Hello all & hope you are all well! :)

I feel a bit dumb asking but how do you update your bio ingame? I done a search option on the forum and someone mentioned /s f_bio command. (Don't quote me exactly but I copied the spelling lol!

So I tried to update my bio and wrote the paragraph of description and entered it.

However it came back with : "updating your bio: invalid command".

I have tried to add brackets before and after the bio but still no luck!

If anyone could do an example of how the command SHOULD be that would be great!

Thanks in advance everyone!! :)

Replace "command" with the command you want to use. They're in your in-game journal. R (Revert), B (Linebreak), N (Replace everything with new text) or A (Add to the end). "Additions to standard NWN".

A- Add. Adds text to the current bio.

B- Break. Adds a break in the current bio. (Enter equivalent, use it twice to split paragraphs)

N- New. Overwrites the current bio.

Nearly everyone I've spoken to.

If your Paladin knocked someone down then started to kick them in the nuts while they can't defend themselves, it's going to look bad for a Paladin who is supposed to epitomize being good and honourable.

Not by me (or the canonized article on paladins of Baravar). The arguments against Rogue levels and Sneak Attack have always been extremely weak, IMO. How is it better to knock someone down and slit their throat from the front, fair and square? Sneak Attack is a critial hit of a kind that you get from flanking, no different from any other tactical advantage in fair combat.

Sneak Attack more represents striking vital areas.. but i do agree with Paladins that should refrain from striking downed opponents. (A few exceptions aside, like knocking them out nonlethally with the express intention of taking them in alive you might get away with but that would really need to be done as it was happening if possible)

Well, to me the distinction seems hypocritical. I do not think a paladin should surprise someone, knock them down from behind and then stab their back. But Knockdown is a straight combat manouvre, as is Sneak Attack. If the intention is to kill your opponent, like most of the time it is, it should be valiant and chivalric to do it as efficiently as possible, with minimal risk to bystanders (and yourself, as pledged property of your church and god). When honorable battle has been initiated, the idea that you shouldn't strike the vital areas of the enemy you're trying to kill is at the very least silly. "It's OK to stab his chest and cut his head off, but striking the kneecaps, kidneys or balls is not cool. Also, you can lob their sword-arm off and then finish the job, but if they trip you have to help them up before you kill them."

I appreciate there's some archaic silliness to the paladin's code that isn't actually justified by reasonable morality, but rather by formal ritual. Also, there's some difference of context in a knightly duel and a gruesome battle against monsters. Nonetheless, it's not the kind of universal rule that all paladins should feel compelled to adopt just because.

I can agree with both sides, so I just figure it should be based on the paladin's personal beliefs and morals. If they think it's unfair to knock someone down, they won't, etc

You just made me laugh so hard I terrified some people and also peed myself a little. Suddenly I conceived of the best tactic to thwart a paladin: free action, drop prone.

Personally I dont think the paladin should help the blood mage back up after striking him down so he can kill the paladin and then continue to murder innocents.

I also think a sneak attack while the mage is down is well warranted for a paladin.

The paladins first task is to protect the innocent and if he can so do chivalrously he should, if not, so be it. I think saving hundreds of lives by killing a monster such as a blood mage outweighs showing self destructive chivalry in combat.

Thats my take on it anyways.

Questions!

PnP wise
Can you dual wield shields and does it need a feat to do so?

NWN wise
I assume you cant dual wield shields?

DM wise
How do staff feel about a person dual wielding shields or a defence based weapon not really meant for combat Parrying dagger/deflecting weapon(because one cant use two shields).

P&P: You can, but the shield bonus would only apply once and wouldn't stack. You'd need a feat to shield bash.

How useful is Brew Potion for early level mage-ing? Is it worth it to nab at like level 3 (opposed to a Spell Focus) to make your own potions? Is it cheaper to do so?

Also, I know it was said before but I can't remember where: What's Amia's formula for potion and wand costs? I know the NWN wiki numbers are wrong, at least for crafting wands.

Yeah I do, too, I just completely forgot about that section haha.

Looking at the numbers, to does indeed seem like Brew Potion would be really helpful for a mage in the early levels. Ability (and Misty) potions at a higher CL that are cheaper than store ones, backup Mage Armor/Shield, Endure Elements and such, plus quick-draw See Invis and Iron Horn for low level monsters.

Me likey.

Well, it is. Potion levels are fixed, so you do extend the duration of the buff for a bit of money.

Where are all the publicly accessible 'free rest' areas, like the Cordor Arena? I heard there was one on B, but I don't know where and if there are more. Potion-making really bites without having one around.

Is there one in the UD? I doubt it, but it would be nice to have.

According to page 132 of the Libris Mortis, a Wheep is actually able to speak common, but the description, and the opinion of other players, has lead me to believe otherwise. Is there a DM ruling over this?

I know there's going to be an overhaul, but it'll be nice for clarification!

My understanding is that it's available, but only via DM, not the toolset.

What's the highest enchancement bonus can you put on a bastard sword?

And is enchancement effects affecting the damage scale such as 1d10 + 1 dmg or does it simply increase the chances of high end damage of the scale?

Also with elemental effects (sorry if I got this wrong) is the highest damage on elemental effects 2d6?

Always wondered that.

Highest enhancement on any weapon is +5.

+5 provides 1d10 + 5 damage, do the range is 6-15 instead of 1-10.

Highest elemental you can mythal on is 1d6 (2d4 on 2H). Don't know what the highest out there is off the top of my head.

Can a DM/Dev explain how skin changer widgets work in this certain context?

Is it possible to have more than one skin stored on a particular summon category, for the sake of argument a familiar, and them switch at will? So Freddy the Magician can summon his baby Silver Dragon familiar or his pet Dog?

Lore-wise yeah that's silly but I'm on about mechanically!

I have a couple questions, one of which is relatively simple.

1: How do I edit my character's bio?

2: If I had lore for my character that's not consistent with canon lore, and I wish to change it, but some of it has been used ICly (but is not wide-spread, i.e. people aren't actively discussing my character), how can I reconcile my accidental mistakes with canon lore/rules/whatever for the Forgotten Realms?

1) Is explained in your journal somewhere. Its a bit of a search but its explained quite nicely. (I know that isnt helping now with the server down but you have to make the changes ingame.)

2) Your toon could have been delusional/drunk/joking when stating things. Ic problems are often explained the easiest ic I feel, just think of why the character said the things he did and then run with that. If you stated something ooc that proved to be impossiible just explain the mistake ooc'ly.

Many thanks! I'll go with the drunk part, that's a pretty good one. I can even make it a side-quest, I can pretend he's an alcoholic (I think I have made the same lore mistakes many times...) Could be a fun character flaw that he has to overcome now that you've given me that idea :D

I have a question about this hiding thing. If a mage is hiding, like going to another plane or sth, and I accidentally run just near him and mechanically I see the guy, but should I see him really IC?

Not sure if I described that properly :)

You mean using greater sanctuary? Thats the only hiding magey spell ingame as far as I recall.

I think that spell is changed on Amia so its not hiding on another plane so I think WYSIWYG is the answer here.

If you 'see' someclose only when close chances are the person is invisible and then you'd notice him or her because you hear something or see a shimmer in the air or somesuch. (Just not 'see' him or her unless you have see invisibility or true seeing)

"The caster becomes ethereal. No other creature can detect the caster. Attacking or performing a hostile action will make the etherealness vanish."

Only the stats on our spell change for balance purposes.

I don't think we've ever accepted the ethereal aspect of GS on Amia. It's a NWN spell so there's no canon ruling anyway, but it should be thought of as what the name implies: a greater version of Sanctuary. It doesn't even make you invisible, mechanically or lorewise. Only enemies are under some mental compulsion to ignore their perception of you.

The homebrew Haven does mention etherealness, which is a bit silly, though. I guess it puts you on the ethereal plane.

I've seen nowhere stated otherwise about the etherealness or a different definition for Amia. If there is/was a DM stance on that, I think it would/should be indicated somewhere easy to find, like the "Spells" section of "Modifications".

When making a mage character, why should anyone choose anything but generalist? Does picking anything else do something beyond restricting your spells? I never understood this.

+1 spell slots per spell tier, and +2 to identifying spells of your specialized school - at a -5 penalty to other schools. Given that the DC to identifying with Spellcraft is fixed and easy to surpass, the latter "bonus" is negligible.

re: Etherealness. Yeah, it probably should be stated somewhere. It used to be pretty well-known. But the spell doesn't even exist in D&D so there's really no appeal to canon to be made. The thing is, actually planewalking to the Ethereal Plane has all sorts of complications that the game can't account for. Namely, moving in any direction (flying) and passing through solid matter.

I understand and agree with your concern. I think it's just the easy way to say you don't detect anything, because ethereal.

I would do it only for RP and future DC requests like custom spells. It seems to have no mechanical advantage, in fact its a mechanical disadvantage.
