A thing ive been wondering a long time is what the server stance on science is, terms such as blood type and genetics seems to be used widely on the server despite its very modern nature scientifically speaking, bloodtype being from 1937 and genetics not really taking a foothold in science before around 1915..
Just seems abit like adding automatic weapons to the 1400's..

Well... I wonder if wizards themselves although masters of the arcane stumble upon elements of science perhaps? And maybe a new "class" for engineers that base their talents upon science!
Interesting topic though!

Interesting topic though! Gunpowder is seen as extremely high tech for enginners in faerun....blood type is eons after that in the scientific race...genetics even more so.. Even at that, Gunpowder (Smokepowder) is limited to the city of Lantan in terms of production as is deemed illegal in many city states across faerun. In terms of Blood Type, in a high magic setting, there'd be no reason for it to exist. With spells like Regeneration able to regenerate blood and the likes, blood transplants and thus the need to know blood type wouldn't even be considered.

BhaalsFavoured07, this topic is often surfaces on forum. dig deeper. afair, no reliable conclusion was drawn. so, as good rule of thumb, imho, touch those things as less as possible. too many have different opinions and too ready to fight for them.

A server stance would be nice, it is extremely out of charater when you run into people and using terms that requires a electron microscope to even half comprehend.

I have never once on the server met anyone discussing blood type, nor do I recall anyone mentioning genes or genetics. Heredity is discussed, but that's not exactly a high concept idea there. I think it's just the people you're hanging out with.

This was something I wondered about as well. Not because I've heard anyone discussing it but because it was actually part of a DM run event. There were pirates attacking Uhm/Wharftown and they ended up using cannons (blackpowder) to shoot these weird balls that released a blue mist that affect people's minds (nerve agent?).
So yeah.. kinda curious about any staff comments on this topic.

So magic is actually just another particle (foton, electron, proton, graviton, meowtons, apples, etc) and the more badass you are the higher is the attraction towards magic parties. When a sufficient amount of magic-particles blub up you get magical effects, blackholes, gnomes and whateverelse magic makes. I base this hypothesis on nothing.
On a more serious note. Don't think the black poweder you'll find in Amia's universe is developed to be strong enough to fire anything other then big cannons or keg-explosions, if even that. Don't think there is a way to determine bloodtypes either, there are however means to determine who the blood belonged to. Don't quote me on any of this.

Regarding bloodtype, perhaps it doesn’t need to be so literal. Bloodtype could refer to body fluids like blood, bile and phlegm, and their relationship to the four temperaments (sanguine, melancholic, choleric and phlegmatic) and then by association, the four elements. Just a thought.

Having now read the post in which this topic spurred from, it's best to wait for a DM's response and maybe even said player.
Blood Type knowledge is very blurry homebrew stuff right now, as with all homebrew things wait for a DM to give it a thumbs up or down.

Just a thought. More of this, please. I have given people the benefit of the doubt because this particular real-world theory might not appear as such in the Realms, but you really can't play a pre-modern medical character if you're not at least aware of such holistic schemes of explanation that underlie the more practical surface level of medicine. Now bring in the fact that the Elemental Lords are actual entities in the Realms, and the possibilities for healing rituals become all the more exciting.

Considering the source, of anyone to have developed a concept behind blood type it does make sense. I do not wish to spoil them but the DMs are likely aware as well.

Doesn't seem a big deal to me. I'd have probably invented something more along the lines of what Irish Eyes suggested, but reading something like that doesn't shatter my ability to be immersed in the setting. On the contrary it just gets my brain thinking about the multitude of ways such a designation for blood might have developed organically in the setting. An intellectual exercise.

I don't think you can apply semi-modern ideas about science in a setting that is about as equally modern as our medieval ages. Especially where magic is considered a real thing, very real in fact, in Forgotten Realms. If you consider the FR world being equivalent to 13th and 14th century Earth then you would have to figure that's 500-600 years before we knew what blood types were.
Fitting in with this time period the compound microscope wasn't even invented yet which would allow for cellular analysis. This would have come into existence in the 17th century.
Black powder or something similar is very believable as that was in wide use in parts of the world before this time, but people would be as confused and scared as to what it exactly was.
And a little something I read from a book once which I found amusing: German miners often blamed the mythical kobold for their "poisoning" of the rock they mined, which would have caused health effects to miners. The shiny metallic portion of the ore, which was a method the miners knew how to identify it, was cobalt.
I just don't think the complexity is there in this setting.

MOD To nip this in the bud before it blows out of proportion, the cannons used in this event were not blackpowder. I'm saying this with less concern of metagaming, and more out of an attempt to reassure the players that the DM's are enforcing a general concept of scientific development. What would a DM stance on this matter even look like? Should we list out every scientific development that isn't allowed? That seems tedious and over the top. At the same time, we can't exactly say, "Everything beyond this point in science is a no-go." Because that's exclusive of a lot of things that might have developed quicker due to Faerun's magic. Realistically speaking, this just isn't something (In my DMly opinion) that we can really put a stance on. There are specific examples that are fairly common that we have put stances on, however. Things like "No Blackpowder", for example. If other examples crop up, we'll address them as we need to. Its just too unrealistic to put a blanket DM stance on things like this. If you have problems, bring it to the Dm's attention. If you have questions about your own level of science-- Bring it to the DM's.

So if someone invents a copper-wire circut then fixates it throughout Cordor and then casts a lightning spell on it, can that be the invention of domesticated electricity?

It's not bad taste to criticize someone's writing constructively. It's neighbourly love. Positive feedback is nowhere near as useful. Once you've made your point, it's out of your hands, but I would imagine most people are happy to have their information corrected.

I would think that would be in the interest of all of us, before we start using Lee-enfields and airplanes.

I know so much that were I more creative and geeky, I'd definitely use every bit of my creativity and geekiness to my advantage in order to create something unique and exciting. I'm always glancing at that sort of stuff with dreamy-eyed inspiration and envy. Innovation is something people should never shun on Amia, be it your own or somebody else's.

That's just a case in point of my ignorance, ugh.
It's a fantasy game, we can come up with all kinds of explanations, even if they were bad or even really bad. I guess that was more or less said already, but hey-ho. Anyway, I leave it to the inspirated lot and sponge it afterwards like the leech I am.

Maybe I'm reading('hearing') this wrong but I kinda felt like my questioning something with the rest of everyone else, is kinda being admonished I wasn't asking for a 'stance' on anything, and particularly not this one incident I mentioned. I was just using it as an example of the kind of stuff that people might want to know about. It is all somewhat sciency if you think about what occured in a certain way. I was actually not overly concerned with the 'black powder' but more curious about the supposed 'nerve agent'. Of course it could be attributed to magic mind affecting spells, and I found it interesting to consider just how such was 'captured' into a vessel to be expelled at a later date. Basically I was just thinking out loud, not really expecting a definite answer, and most definitely not trying to 'oust' any DM plot thingy going on. I don't feel like I am owed some explanation or that I demanded one. Sorry if I came off that way. I guess I'll just keep my curiosities to myself since I"m not going to bug the staff for every random thought/question I have. Apologies. MOD

You'd be correct in assuming that blood type isn't something that just about any PC or 99.999999999999999999999999999999% of NPCs should know. However there is a very specific group of NPCs that does delve into stuff like that...
I'm not giving any spoilers though!

Suffice it to say that it is IC that the blood types are indeed listed on that bit of info there, but just because you the player knows OOCly what they are, your PC wouldn't. Perhaps they might chalk it up to some esoteric notation, or indication that the writer might be a bit off their rocker or something of that sort.

Nothing like a good old mystery-group appearing out of nowhere that no one has ever heard of before who conveniently know everything! Anyway, I think it's a matter of immersion, rather than a 'is it possible' issue. If someone walked up and started talking about cast iron blocks that could withstand consistent small explosions that enable a cart's wheels to spin automatically, i'd punch them in the face!

Yeah, I mean they've only been around and involved in that research for years and had their names touted like bogeymen...
... Wait, is that a spoiler for people?

There wouldn't be a point to saying "no spoilers" in regards to the Arcanum since they're practically a public forum. Even 8-years young Joe Blogs who just got off the boat knows all about the Arcanum!
