I'm not saying it would be lesser, I'm saying it would be different. "A server where people go to accommodate a fetish" is different than "a server where people go to RP." Extreme graphic torture is, I believe, not really seen as RP. It's seen as indulging a fetish. That may not be an accurate or fair perception, but I believe it is the common perception. And a server can't have both reputations: it's either a "social server" or an "RP server." Catering to fetishes would dilute our core mission of being an RP server. There's nothing wrong with being a social server. If you're asking me to say why I think being the kind of server that allows graphic torture is "bad," I can't give you one. It's not bad. It's just "other."

If people just start whipping others in the street... or knock someone down and begin to pull finger or toenails off.. then ban them... but in a secured environment... between two people who are willing and set parameters, is that so wrong? If it is not seen by those who do not want to see it... is there an issue? It already happens and we all know it... so really nothing would change other than people would know it might be happening somewhere at that present time.

I just wrote that whole post saying that "other" is not "bad," and the first thing you ask is whether "other" is "bad?" It's not bad. It's just different. It would make us be seen as less of an RP server and more of a social server. I think Amia is better off positioning itself as an RP server. I feel like I just said all this.

You could just aswell say the very same thing about the cybring rule then.
The thing is people can claim they are of full age. There is no way to know if it is true or not.

And to be honest. While I am not against any of the rules, I think it's all fine as it is. I personally find the thought of two consent adults having sex a large bit less disturbing than someone pulling stipes of skin off someones flesh. But alas that's just me. <.<

It's not a fetish. The kind of graphic torture preformed in the Amia setting comes no where close to being snuff. I know these things, trust me. I've spend years on a snuff fantasy writers forum, till it got shut down by the us government. This just all sounds like a fear of the unfamiliar and that should be no reason not to indulge those players who want to deepen their role play and explore the extends of their creative writing. Allowing it has nothing to do with being unsocial and it won't lessen, but enhance our reputation for all round inclusive role play. Most people actually have a wide and accepting view of the world.

Honestly I don't see why anything should be forbidden. Everything should be up to the players decisions. If they want to lie about their age, that isn't our fault. We shouldn't refrain ourselves from performing certain RP just because someone -might- be under age. I thought people were more mature than that.

A poll is entirely unnecessary unless Disco himself specifically says he does not mind anymore.

Disco's said in the past that he didn't really care so much. Does something like this happen as a DM team decision, or just Disco's?

I bet this isn't really about torture, but about realistic detailed descriptions. What if torture isn't allowed? Then what detailed description is to follow? The beauty of child birth, tending a wound, having a disease? Or simply playing an unpleasant looking and behaving character in all its glorious detail?
Anything can be to much for some. Are we really going to be ruled by the weakest stomach or the lesser detailed mind? Knowing some people I can easily be to detailed in anything and everything without putting a conscious effort into it. Am I and others really going to have to mind each sentence we type in an effort to have some quality role play?

This rule is not changing, and that's the final word.
Disco is not only the host of this server, but a primary school teacher. Being linked to a server with possibilities of graphic torture and sex would not be good for his career.
Besides that, the acts themselves aren't banned. Two PCs want to have a romp in the bushes? Great. Just don't RP the act itself here.
Want to torture a captive? Go ahead - just don't go beyond the boundaries of taste. Whether you're emoting pulling someone's nails off or outright describing the crack and tear of flesh, it's the same result to the PC - just one is appropriate here and the other isn't.
That's how it is for this policy, and you'll have to like it or lump it, basically. And for the comments of "But what about horrid diseases or RPing childbirth?" If we're mature people, then we should be able to gauge boundaries of what is and isn't appropriate ourselves.

I can respect that explanation, especially the part about Disco's career. I still think consensuality should be the basis of all roleplaying limits, so let us know if our host decides to pursue another avenues of employment!

Although I'm disappointed by "the final word," I do understand the part about Disco's career. I certainly wouldn't want to take part in risking his job or reputation, so if this would do that, I get it. That said, I would ask that, in one way or another we get some clarification on the matter. Where does the line go? I know Sune just gave an example (and I actually thought his example was illegal as is, so yay!), but I'm not sure if I'd be able to use that to hit the right balance in a torture-RP situation. As for my comments earlier on in the thread, I apologise to those I might have offended. I stand by the meaning of what I've written, but I do realise that I've come off as quite a bit of an ass, and that's not how I want people to think of me. So I'm sorry, differences aside I do fully support that everyone has a right to his or her oppinion, and I understand why my comments might have pissed some of you off.

Well... we finally have a definitive yes or no either way... but there is still an issue. As dako said, we most likely are going to need a deffinitive line of what is "too much"; because as we all know... everyone has their own ideas of what is too much... and while one person may be able to only stand a minor amount... there are others who can go a lot farther. Just my observation

If you really need to describe how you skin someone instead of just typing "skins him alive" then you need an adult forum to express this in, I dont mind this personally, I find it an interesting form of rp in some aspects. I know there is children here and describing a Schwedentrunk in details to a child is not something I will do, nor support doing.

Unless there's a legal side to this all whereupon the server is legally bound to prohibit graphic torture, I do not see why would we refrain from it. Horror movies tend to be at times rather graphic, and I was quite young when I was watching those. It's up to parents to prevent their kids from viewing certain content.
That's my opinion. But I understand completely what Pally said and I'm bound to agree that he is right when it comes to Disco's career.

This is the most popular anything I have ever said has become, whether people agree with it or not, I am still happy.
I doubt this rule will change much RP, especially if torture is still allowed, but I definitely think that some actual boundaries should be stated as to the 'boundaries of taste' part Sune mentioned. People have different interpretations of such a thing. It is a common problem with most of the rules on Amia, really. They need to be less ambiguous.

No need for further definition. If a player says you're going to far or a DM then you know the limit. It will be hard to put to paper without typing several paragraphs of examples of acceptable and unacceptable torture. (If we are doing that. Can I write the unacceptable ones?)
