Hell, here's an OOC hint, the Grove do the same but can't cover the whole forest easily. Wait for Dale citizens to walk up and devour them! Uh huh. Lets just send all the evil baddies to RP in the cesspool derived exclusively of other evil baddies. A place that's so far out of the way, that it's not even on the same plane of existence. I mean, you can't be serious. Have you even been to Tarkuul? It's always empty, and even if it wasn't, you don't even have the weather to talk about! I mean, the people there are literally dead!

That would be one solution, sure. But as I said before, I think the answers lie in the direction of more simplicity, not complexity. Landscaping the whole terrain of the Dale isn't a thing that's just going to happen without a preposterous amount of IC labor. And even if it did, it's still not solving the problem, it's (literally) just bypassing it. The problem isn't the road, it's the assholes.

That said, if your character is banned, it's kind of expected you take the OOC hint as well. I have no banned characters, from anywhere. But that's not the point I was heading toward anyway. The server in it's present layout has a poorly defined central RP zone, that being Bendir Dale right now. It simply is where people go to meet up with other players on the server. Cordor is just too big, and is much more effective at banning people as RuffTuff was getting at. Bendir Dale is just the next best place for desperate evil baddies to go to to get some amount of RP in. I'm not saying they should be allowed there, far from it. RuffTuff is doing everything he can and should. The issue is there's no where else for these players to RP! Now I admit, I'm an outsider in this server, I really haven't played all that long, primarily because of this reason, but don't let that obscure the point I'm trying to get across. I heard that once Amia Forest was the place everyone gathered to do stuff. Sadly, it suffered from PvP issues, and obviously that will drive off a huge population of the server from going there. What I want to see is a return to something similar in that a neutral zone is the central RP-zone for the server. Ideally positioned right between, or very close to, places like Bendir and Cordor. Except that there was something in place to help mitigate PvP. I came here from a server called Astoria, it died several years ago, but the itch left over by it's 'good old days' hasn't been scratched by a game yet, so I returned to NWN along with 3 other OOC friends here to Amia in hopes of scratching that itch. Astoria had it's one major city, and just 2 zones away from it was Silverbark; the place everyone on our server came to RP. Right there on the crossroads was Redbudd, owned, ran and mediated by a player. Now, everyone on the server was welcome at the Redbudd, regardless of their race, deity, past, smell, or attitude. Just about everyone respected the one rule - don't kill each other - and any fighting that was to be done was taken outside away from the Redbudd. But the Redbudd itself acted as the refuge for anyone not wanting to get attacked. Anyone that did attack, got their protection voided, and all the server could crush them without remorse. I'm not going to say this wasn't without it's trials, but it worked for the most part! But this place being in Astoria allowed a spot where the tension was always high, conflict was abound, everyone could join in on it regardless of your character type, and stuff happened. Amia does not have this. This is not a reasonable or realistic 'want' in an IC perspective, but it is needed for players (or at least for me). tl;dr Give that bitch a neutral sanctuary, bitches love neutral sanctuaries!

Its a great idea-- So go make it IG! Build a tavern or make some guild hall in the middle of Amia.
I think this topic, though, should stay on the Dale's issues, in respect for their current concerns. I'm glad to see people brainstorming solutions for Amia's problems, however. Go find some other aspiring folk and put those creative juices to work.
Mm. Creative juices.

niXed.FEAR wrote: Give that bitch a neutral sanctuary, bitches love neutral sanctuaries! Actually, this reminds me of another potential solution to the issue. Many moons ago, when the elusive creature known as GothicSauce was still a Bendir Dale DM, he had a pet project tavern known as the Fools Rush Inn. It was just a little hobbit hole style building with a spawned entrance near the little waterfall, and it was a neat little RP hub that only appeared when he was in the DM seat. Something like that could very easily serve as Bendir's "Rosebudd," so to speak. The primary issue with things like that is for the most part, Amia's RP happens outside. I've been around the different inns and taverns around the server, and while you do occasionally see a couple of folks inside them, for the most part they're empty save for the NPCs. For some reason, Amian RP tends to gravitate toward open areas like Cordor's square, or the corner by the Bendir carts. Even inside Bendir, we have the Hin Inn right there. But for some reason, even in the rain we can all be found sitting or standing around the dale square like turkeys, while warmth, shelter and booze lie just a few steps away. I'm afraid that adding something like that to Bendir would just be another ignored sideshow. On the other side of that, however, is The Broken Arrow in Cordor. A player-run whiskey bar operated out of a converted rentable house. Every time I went in there it was full of people drinking, talking and having a good time. Y'know, like taverns and bars are supposed to be. Depending on how we chose to work it, a place like the Fools Rush Inn might actually help with the issue assuming people would actually go inside. Especially if it was a no-PvP zone. That way, folks who wanted to gather in Bendir without risk of being wrecked by power builds could go into the inn to do their peaceful RP, and the PvP settings of the Dale as a whole could remain as they are.

As a Tarkuul player I feel I can comment on this. There is a healthy mix of players from other timezones. There is also a post in the know your leaders topic in the lore section that might shed some extra light. And I assure you, there are some PCs who are alive as well

Liz wrote: Just out of curiosity, since I've never played any other server for more than an hour or two... how exactly does an active NPC guard like you're describing determine who to attack? Is it just "pound whoever throws the first punch"? If so, I can agree that could be situationally problematic; Daisy has thrown the first punch in several fights, in response to people prepping themselves for a fight by casting non-offensive combat buffs. How do "smart" guards distinguish between legitimate preemptive defense like that, and someone just throwing punches for no reason? Sorry for the late return on this one Liz. The basic script found in a lot of NPCs out there is not very smart at all I am afraid. Basic flow would have the NPC look for nearby PCs that are PvP flagged and in combat, walk over and nix them both/all. A basic "you are disturbing the peace so shutup" kind of thing. From there it can grow into anything the code monkeys want it to be. Advanced scripts can indeed look for who threw the first punch and even take things into account such as race, class and alignment if they so choose. Taking advantage of the citizenship script it could check to see who the outsider is even and target the other parties involved. One of the best scripts I have seen would "knock you out", move to the the city jail, rez you and then hold you for a short time to let you cool your heels and then (if there was no PC guards on) release you outside the city gate. It made for a great opportunity for some great RP actually. @Hack: I respect that view however of buffing the guards. Even the smartest script I have seen for these types of NPCs leaves much to be desired on a IG level and only mention it as a excessive measure without exceeding to removing the option of PvP from the area. For a generally well behaved RP server player-base the removal of the option to PvP from a open area is a serious immersion break and I hate to use it in any case that a IC solution can be used.

Unless you have some mechanism to keep such troublemakers away after first infraction, they will still succeed in their intentions, no matter whether they win or not.

But after it was rebuilt, it was pretty active. With all kinds of people there (behaving, even). For like a week. Then it suddenly became dead again. Really, though, this whole need to fight all the time really baffles me to no end. I really don't get it.

People fight because they know their build is superior and they're in a Party PvP zone. They don't fight because it's "role play" otherwise they'd actually care about, and take the time, getting a DM to possess NPCs or whatnot.

I would like to point out, that yes; while the "evil" chars come to the dale and start trouble... there are also a bunch of supposed "good" guys at the dale that instigate as well. I am talking about the self appointed "Stop your evil doings or I will kick your ass" characters, and we all know who they are.
They are as much the problem as the "Evil" ones are. and for clarification, I am referring to the ones that have no business butting into Dale politics... but do so because their Chars are bored, or whatever.
So really... you need to deal with the issue as a whole, and not just the selective ones if any suggestion, or compromise is going to work.
OOCly, my toon is evil... but IC he does not put himself in the open, because he knows you have to go along to get along. There is a difference between being evil, and just being a douche... but on the other side of the coin... their is a difference between good, and being a righteously arrogant high and mighty douche.
There are always going to be assholes... thats never gonna change.

This sort of thing stems from people actually caring about their build and how 'powerful' it is on an 'RP' server, which I still can't wrap my head around. It's also encouraged by the 'build thread', which I also can't wrap my head around given we're all on an 'RP' server. It's a vicious cycle. Powerbuilding will, and I mean WILL lead to pvp eventually. And the RP'rs, with their 'RP' builds either won't be able to do much *or anything* about them, or will stick to their guns....and actually role play *not roll play*, and not give the powergamer the fight they're picking. and round and round we go. I think once we all get on the same track, and that is to 'role play' first, and have any player to player conflict* be the by product of our RP, then we will see less and less of the trolling. *Note: Player to player conflict: This does not mean 'my build against your build', or any sort of actual fighting.

And if you're actually serious with your question, Zedrik, I'll give you an answer.
Out of all of my experience with Amia-- From playing on both good and evil, from watching as a DM, from watching as a character in the shadows, and from being rather close with a handful of players: I can honestly say that out of the huge lump of people that everyone gets so upset about, maybe 2-3 were actually trying to cause trouble OOCly. Were actually doing it to grief Dale players. Most characters who fight (And I presume you mean Evil folks who stir trouble at the Dale) are not doing it to be like: "Come on guys, lets fuck up the small kids." What they're trying to do is stir conflict. It might not be received as such. It might feel like it has a lack of consequence, or that its consistently ruining your RP. But I can honestly say that from all the people I've observed and spoken to, its just a matter of differences of opinions of quality Rp. Evil and conflict comes in many shapes and forms.
And to answer Loynis's generalization: I have a more powerful build than your character. But I don't fight all the time? Having a more powerful build does not necessitate constant violence, and surely does not necessitate griefing other players. And vice versa-- constant violence is not a factor of having a better build than someone. There have been quite a bit of villains in my time that were really, really poorly built. And they started all kinds of trouble-- and got their asses kicked every time. Its much easier, realistically, to be frustrated over losses than victories, as 'victims' of conflict. But isn't that just natural?
You want my solution? Its just as you said earlier. Fair consequences. I'm fairly confident that no one would complain if the typical Dale aggressor came into the Dale, fought, and killed people-- and the NPC's of the Dale were drastically affected. Villagers killed, funerals held, council meetings arranged to address the problems-- But also! Consequences for the aggressor should he or she fail! Like jailing, or a public trial, or executions (Who knows). A lot of these things... admittedly.. were kind of out of the hands of the players. And I feel somewhat responsible myself for not helping to create consequences to these conflicts. That's why I'm really excited to see Dale DM's. From everything I've seen on this thread, and heard from people-- its not that players dislike that fighting happens. Its that they dislike that it happens with little consequence. Without such consequences, it feels repetitive. Pointless. The same people could be doing the same things, but if we were able to add dynamic consequences to it all, it would be a lot of fun.

Yeah I would not say having a powerful character means you run around PVPing all the time, I have not gotten into real PVP for like 2 years, but I will agree people who plan on PVPing focus on having a powerful build so they can win, so it seems as such to some people. ((Side comment)) With the ever increasing power of monsters you can't blame people for focusing on mechanical power in game.

As to the "how to make the NPC guards script work"...... Another server I played on had NPC guards and PC guards. When a player's character joined the guard, their faction was set to that of the NPC guards, therefore, in a fight in that area, the NPC's would only fight hostiles that were not guards. That solves the problem and solves vigilantes from jumping in where they have no right to as well. Now, I know nothing about coding, so.... take it as you will.

Yeah the Wiltun kill script was abused by trolls a lot who would make a lowbie char, attack you forcing you to auto attack to one shot them and the script would kill you...... I had to keep turning them to stone in wiltun/killing them in the starting room till a DM could log in to deal with it. So I agree pre-coded things tend to be abuseable by trolls....but have we had really any troll problems since the gamespy server list went down?

Honestly, the number of times this happens is....so ridiculously low anymore. The bonus to this game being as old as it is is that the people who were going to do this have (mostly) done it by now.

Mm. Creative juices. I am a little confused about this. I saw a need for a TRUE neutral zone and desperately wanted to make this happen. But when I asked a DM, I was told it wouldn't be allowed. The response I got was this: "Hey, it's felt that this would be too similar to an area in the module for a single PC, which we don't do I'm afraid. You are welcome to do something like this with one of the rent-able areas, however!" I had huge plans when I came here, and I worked very hard involving as many people as I could while secretly getting things established. Then I got this response, and I lost a lot of steam. I didn't see the point in taking it further, when the highest my ambitions could take me was to open up something in a rentable house. At that point, frustrated with hitting a wall, I wanted to just give up on the whole "secrecy" and "diplomacy" of my character. I was willing to just throw it all out the window and try to go blow up Bendir Dale because if I can't play the evil I want to play, and can't get where I want to get with it, then why not do the only thing left? Kill people for the interaction I want, even if it completely destroys the character I had worked to make. Luckily, I decided to just stop playing that character rather than see them destroyed due to my OOC frustration.

Ah, hrm. I can't recall anything specific, but typically, we won't build taverns, bases, or areas for one PC, even if it was intended to house RP for others. What that means is, rather than outright, "No, this can never be done," it means "Get more people doing it with you, and we can work on something." With a tavern, that's looking at staff, security, or other management.

I'm confused at how you could possibly be confused, Tomato. If you read the post you quoted carefully (or even casually) you'll read that no, Coconut isn't saying that the character just went around killing people because it was fun. S/he retired the character instead.
And the if original thread was about looking for things that can be done about all the griefing at the Dale, then one player's explanation for why they were tempted to go grief the Dale is pretty much as on-topic as it's possible to be.

And I'd add to that by mentioning that Coconut was not going to grief the Dale, it was that she'd let her evilness out in a more direct manner IC, since the other option had failed. It's a good example of how OOC motivations may contribute to the problem, but doesn't point toward griefing.

I suppose griefing is a pretty loaded word. Call it "motivated aggression," then.

I also think that "powerbuilding always leads to PvP" is, basically, BS. Because I know tons of people, including myself, who like to build, but rarely is it ever for PvP, and even if it is, it's to gain something later on throughout that characters RP. For some of my characters, the build IS the RP. Good building is just something to fall back on in case shit gets real, only true asshats build just so they can kill people for fun. And I find it immensely hard to RP a badass who can't even hold his own against another PC. Some people even build for PvM, which I know lots of people who have builds that can kill anything on the server in PvM but they can't even kill a KC in PvP. So "good building" or "power building" is a rather flexible term.

Relax Tomato, relax man chica! This is a pretty dynamic thread, with a lot of points, a lot of input. If Coconut wants to continue discussing solutions to her specific issue, she can PM me. There's a way to keep the thread on topic without sounding mean!

Sorry my post seems to have hit a nerve, but I am having trouble understanding why it is upsetting. Nothing I posted was hostile or meant to be taken offensively, but I apologize all the same if it was taken that way. I said I did not attack or kill anyone. That is not something my character would do. I did, however, say that I was frustrated enough on an OOC level that I wanted to do it, but didn't. As I said, I simply stopped playing the character when I realized my goals were not achievable on this server. So I made a different character with different goals that were more realistic to something permitted on the server. But it is relevant. This entire topic is bringing notice to people who attack and metagame at Bendir Dale. I was simply stating a personal case where I was frustrated enough at one point for not being able to get anywhere with this particular character, and when I noticed I was considering finding other outlets for entertainment that were toxic to both my character and to the server, I stopped playing before I got to that point. Others might not come to that conclusion, and might start "trolling" and doing other actions that break character because they are frustrated with not being able to get anywhere. Just looking at the problem and saying "Hey, people are trolling and attacking Bendir Dale and it needs to stop" is easy to say but offers nothing to finding a solution. What people need to start looking at is the underlying reason as to why people troll and resort to pointless pvp. And this applies to not just the "evil" characters but the "good" guys too because there isn't trolling being done by just one side or the other. I've seen plenty from both. For me, it is finding a faction that is completely player driven. It becomes frustrating when I spend a large amount of my time waiting for a DM to sign on because I do not have the power or authority to do anything. Other players might feel the same at times and therefore get bored or frustrated, and instead of signing off to do something more constructive, they attack or lash out. That is the point I am trying to make, and I simply thought there might be other players that felt the same way. If my opinion is not shared and this isn't an issue for others, then I will stop wasting everyone's time and just assume this is a personal issue.

Have you read all of the posts? Almost everyone has been trying to put forth their opinion in the hopes of solving these issues. Some people focus on the results, some people focus on suggestions to change, some people focus on identifying what is happening, and others are explaining the issue from their own perspectives. We really need all of this together in order to get a more clear idea about how to come to a solution. Easy steps: Identify the problem, Devise a plan, Carry out plan, Check that problem is solved.
We need to take on a more positive tone, consider everyone's viewpoints, and try to find something which will help. Hackums has said he will help out, and also bring along other DM's to do the same. It's a big step toward this problem going away!

A few comments and suggestions. Comments first, then suggestions.
1) Pony and Zedrick are right, we do not want to change the essential atmosphere of Bendir Dale as a welcoming town. We like the aspect that it’s an RP hub and to Ruff’s point, having evil people able to mix there (as long as they play it smart) makes life interesting. Thing is, it’s not a welcoming and peaceful town. It’s the murder capital of Amia. There is no deterrence. Banning is a paper tiger. So what? It’s a piece of paper. Banned people can just return, get pummeled or pummel us all while following server PvP rules. We give them an out which is basically, “Leave our township or I’ll be forced to remove you”. They give us an out which is basically, “Take a walk back to your hobbit hole or I’m kicking your ass”. It’s all totally legal as far as rule breaking is concerned. It’s also exhausting and repetitive and frustrating.
2) I get the metagaming concept but let me play devils advocate for a minute. Some characters will simply say they would return and take on the NPC’s too, because they are just that badass. Let’s say someone comes along and wipes the floor with the PC Militia, something which has happened before. They get banned. Whoop dee doo. They will tell you that no puny Hin or Gnome is going to get in their way, they proved it yesterday by whipping an entire squad of pipsqueaks. They will go wherever they please and kick the NPC’s asses while they are at it. Is it reasonable to expect some hardened bully to back down because a guy, who looks exactly like the one he just punted into next week, is standing by the gate? Is it really metagaming if there isn’t a PC or an NPC anywhere in Bendir who could possibly stop him? I know it is by server rules but stay with me. I’ve seen the Bendir NPC Militia in action. They are OK but any PvP’oholic with some slickly crafted build can take out a bunch of them without breaking a sweat. Back to this in a minute.
3) What isn’t fun is an all day pissing match where visiting PC’s argue with every resident, trolling and baiting PvP all day long. If they lose they are back the next day. If they win they are back the next day. How did Cordor deal with it, aside from when it was no PvP? They have Law Knights and a DM to possess them. In addition to “serious mode” if you bust something up or blatantly break the law, the Law Knights trot out and rip you a new one. Winning isn’t in the cards. It’s very dissatisfying to someone seeking PvP if the outcome is already known and you have to warm up your impersonation of a corpse before the blows even begin to rain down on your hapless self. In Bendir, while that’s a remote possibility, it’s also possible you will monkeystomp every person (including NPC’s) in the whole town in the space of a couple of minutes. Ohh the thrill. To paraphrase Pony, all those Cordor idiots are now in Bendir.
We can do stuff to make the problem move, but that will just make it someone else’s problem. I’m going to propose something bolder and server wide that I think will also help Bendir Dale.
We still haven’t heard any suggestions about “Consequences” except more DM oversight, maybe that’s enough, maybe not. This is about consequences and some modicum of respect for civilization and moderating behavior when PC’s are in a settlement populated by both PC’s and a greater portion of NPC’s.
Server Wide Suggestion: Any PC who is PvP killed by a DM Controlled NPC town guard has a timer set at the time of death. The PC shall remain dead and unable to be raised for 48 RL hours from the time of death.
The IC reasoning for the timer is that the town in question is investigating and documenting the incident. The body isn’t released until the investigation and paperwork is complete.
Player PvP rules remain unchanged.
Bendir Suggestion:
Make the existing named NPC’s the “Elite Squad”. General Nof, Skit Gwil, and Holl Silvereye. Beef them up ability, skill, level, and gear wise so they can handle putting down a riot. Skit and Holl are already Militia Officers. Make General Nof the “General of the Militia”. If a DM needs to put down their foot on someone’s neck, we at least have some NPC’s who can kick the crap out of the troublemakers. Use this once or twice in combination with the above and watch things quiet down when word gets around. Rationale? These guys have all been here since forever. If some punk who arrived on the island last week can get to Level 30 imagine how tough these bastards are. There’s your IC rationale. No need to parachute in some faked up Elite squad from god knows where.
Summary What does this accomplish? Well first of all, this provides a deterrent but the control remains firmly in the hands of the staff, where it belongs. The same applies to every town that has NPC Guards. If a DM is forced to possess NPC’s to portray an organized civil response to a riot, crime spree, mass murder, or other serious event there are no more consequences today than there are when you have a fistfight between two individuals out on the frontier. This will only need to be used a couple of times before word gets around and players start respecting the town NPC guards.
All this assumes there’s a DM or two assigned to Bendir Dale on a permanent basis. Without that, this doesn’t work. I mean, it’s not Guldorand, there are actually PC’s here all the time. Right now you can PvP everyone till your hearts content, inside town, outside town, DM’s present or not and as far as I know there’s no cooldown timer. You will still be able to do battle out in the wilderness and maybe once in a while in town if you are lucky or clever or both, but if you mess with the civil authorities too much and they bust out the big guns to put you down it’s gonna hurt. This isn’t permadeath, it isn’t serious mode, but if you need to deal with a banned individual repeatedly flaunting, baiting, metagaming,or trolling there’s at least some negative consequences.

Pthree I'm assuming there is a technical scripted solution to keep the body from being revived in any way until the timer expires. I'm no code monkey so I will leave it to the experts as to whether its feasible assuming its even deemed acceptable conceptually.

True Resurrections require a DM, and a normal resurrection requires there to be a piece of the body taken after it's death. Hide the body for 48 hours; problem solved!

"But my (Wife/friend/compatriot/evilbuddy) has X taken from me, so they raised me, so this timer is crap." better we think of it ahead of time than have to listen to it after. Me, I like the idea, and I think it should go for all settlements.

Let me clarify. The intention is for it to be mechanical and scripted. Once the DM Controlled NPC kills the offending PC raises and resurrections WILL NOT function on that PC until the timer ticks down to zero. Since a DM is present they could simply emote as the NPC guard. *takes body to city hall* or some such. End of story, have a nice day. The player will have no reason to complain to other players and OOC bitch to us, as only DMs can possess NPCs.

I agree with Mags post about consequences and solutions... but I think it has to go for "EVERYONE".
I have seen on a number of occasions.. the "authorities" in bendir, allow their IC friends say and do whatever, while someone else gets mollywhopped.

I've never seen that; it may be that if you see it you should alert their superiors (ICly, of course). Before we take ooc steps against something that's a wholly IC problem.

Yeah corruption and lack of oversight is perfectly IC. Or maybe I'm too used to playing a Jarl Warden and a drow and a criminal >_>
Also a script that allows DMs to temporarily force a PC out of action for a given amount of time wouldn't be a bad idea. It shouldn't be entirely automated because that's just absurd, but it would be more efficient than relying on the players to enforce it for themselves (because if a PC bucks the ruling without going through the proper channels, it will lead to reporting, and then DMs will have to go and handle it, and that will take time etc etc). AFAIK this is basically the system already in place - ie, if you get taken down by DM involvement, they can imprison you for an indefinite length of time (as opposed to the 24 hour rule, which should actually be more than sufficient for PC militia).
Also I guess you guys should get a jail if you don't have one already.
