You know when you click multiplayer on the start screen and the game hangs because its trying to contact the server? Then you wait like 20 seconds before it tells you the server doesn't exist and you can go on?

I thought I read somewhere on the web that you can modify a file to skip that process.. which would make the startup time much faster.

Anyone know anything about this?

Open up C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

Open up "hosts" (not "hosts.msn" or anything else) in Notepad

Add the following lines to the bottom of the page:

0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com

0.0.0.0 nwn2.master.gamespy.com

I didn't think I cared about the wait time, but since changing I can say it's much nicer now.

Try using Windows Search to look for "hosts". There's no extension to the file, but if you're on the web, it's there.

alright, didn't find the etc folder first. had to search for it. But still doesn't work after adding the lines. Sure they are the right ones?

0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com

0.0.0.0 nwn2.master.gamespy.com`

Looks like they might belong to nwn2 maybe?

Yeah, just remove the 2

Is what worked for me, at least!

Hm.. no luck..

also tried

0.0.0.0 nwn.master.bioware.com (instead of 0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com)
0.0.0.0 nwn.master.gamespy.com

there's no certain amount of space or anything needed between them?

I'm taking it as if this works, once I press okay at the login screen I should directly be able to login to internet games without waiting for the "authorizing player name....."

It worked perfectly for me. I can check what I have it down as exactly, in a bit, but it does work!

Strange, it worked out with "0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com 0.0.0.0 nwn.master.gamespy.com" on my other computer. Will try fix it later on my laptop.

Thank for the help guys!

Huh... I copy&pasted the same directions I used... but that's not how my hosts file looks now. At the bottom of mine has a line for local host, and "0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com". I have no idea how that translated from the directions I followed (which obviously included the '2')... But I do have a terrible habit of messing with my computer files after polishing off a bottle of whiskey.

It does work. Operating system may have something to do with it, since I'm old school WinXP. I'm guessing the hosts file might be elsewhere in other operating systems, but also make sure you look for the 'etc' folder, THEN the hosts file.
