I agree but in princple it's beginning to sound like a good concept.
I'm guessing there's enough flexibility in setting the 'objectives' that things which would in a realisitc battle be vital would be selectable ?

Disproportionate Spread of DCs:
I was impressed by the suggestion of someone in the other thread who said that you could just do away with DCs altogether. Let's face it, DCs are currency for special, powerful stuff. As well as RP stuff. Usually both at the same time. If you gave out things solely on roleplay merit, you'd see the culture change considerably. Gravitation towards DMs is, I figure, largely related to the chance of scoring DCs. I've always hated this and veered away. Now if every single request could be paid for with ample screenshots of roleplay and a satisfying forum post, you would see much less of this forced spotlight syndrome and more people connecting amongst each other.
I got my first DC fairly soon after I started in 2005. My Cleric just sat down and had a conversation outside the old Cordor temple. About where she's from and all that. So backstory basically, nothing great, no twists and no character advancement. Back then, the simple fact that you were roleplaying with someone else and pulled it off reasonably well was enough to score you a DC if a DM was watching. Today the requirements are cranked up way higher.
The Server Feels Outdated and Areas Get Real Boring Real Fast:
I don't see this at all. The server is huge and quite detailed. Even too huge, you could argue. So many intricately made areas and not enough people to fill them with. I feel it would almost be beneficial to sack some and shrink it down a bit.
Partying and Level Ranges:
Yeah, most people know this. But let's face it, if we're not max level and we're out hunting, we want to be rewarded for doing it. Otherwise we could just sit in the tavern all day and spank waitresses. So an inconvenience, such as a guy tailing after us who breaks the level range and gives us 1 XP per kill, is not worth it. Instead of having this inconvenience, how about we find a way to have no penalty, but to make the high level guy have less of an impact?
IF IT'S A RULE, MAKE IT A RULE!:
Makes sense. I'm a big fan of slashing bureaucracy though, so this kind of conflicts. I haven't been on the receiving end of rule violations in a long time, so my perspective on this might be a bit rosy.
Not Enough DM Quests:
You may be overthinking this. You need a unified approach only insofar as the DMs need to be in sync for the big happenings so nothing odd or immersion-breaking occurs. Other than that.. there's probably a whole bunch of DM styles. Whether that's actively creating something and making players come to you, or observing something that's already happening and just let the inanimate world come to life to help. Doing very small things like taking control of an NPC to interact at the right moment, or doing something gutsy like seeing a Drow raiding party and deciding they look promising enough not to get stomped brutally by NPC guards and barred by immovable gates.
The wording alone.. Quests, Plots, Events.. that all rings of things that run separately from the regular program. They don't have to be. I get so happy when the NPC world comes alive for little things, when I get the feeling that there are people behind the wheels who are in dialogue with us, the players. When players come to expect that the world is alive and reacting, you bet they'll stop charging fully buffed through the town and start walking.
Amia Needs a Major Plot Arc:
Sure, those are always fun. Don't be afraid to break things.
Make RP Hubs RP Hubs Again:
Yeah, I mentioned this before. IG common sense starts to become a luxury when you have a player number problem, and your main hub is being made very uncomfortable for people to hang out at.
Over the years, restrictions on locations have been creeping in. Hard-locked gates, rules that OOC bar many races (meaning you can't even sneak in without calling a DM), No-PvP zones. Restrictions and impossibilities reduce opportunities for both RP and PvP. The typical succession goes like this: 1) Freedom is in effect. Some people complain about it. 2) Freedom is taken away. 3) Success. The people are happy with how tidy it is now. 4) Boredom. Things get stale.
DM Behavior on the Forums
Used to be much worse. I hope the realization of a game without players has sunk in a bit. That doesn't mean you have to take shit if it is given. But the ideal is that we're all standing at the same height. On that note, I'm glad for these reflective threads lately.

I've been biting my tongue for a long time, but I sometimes wonder if the dms here are gun shy when it comes to mixing things up with newer players. Now I certainly don't have the best time zone but I play over 6 hours a day 7 days a week, which is a phenomenal commitment for most people, and I don't spend that time just leveling, nor most of it. I understand my style of role play is more the type of thoughtful insular discussions between individuals, but with my newest char I've been making concerted efforts to get my finger in nearly every pie I can. That being said I am often wandering to all the cities I am allowed inside of and find them ghost towns, common enough and I'm sure what can be done is being done about this, but I see DMs on, I see players log in when they are on and log off after they leave. But I see -none- of it. I've never ran into a controlled npc, I've never seen a monster that isn't scripted to be there, heck, its only because of shouts that seem to be mostly inside jokes I don't get that I know you guys exist.
Now I have played here for sometime under another log in so I know some other players out there and it just seems like the same people keep getting most of the attention (Dusty I miss you in the UD, it was the only time I got DCs). Certainly you look for consistent roleplay and just plain playing time with those you guys invest your hard earned stories in but part of the job is making life interesting for even us less known players. Anyways I am not wanting to come off as a rant, nor as a blame game. You guys have made a great server and I appreciate all the work you've done, I just hope that my time and what I feel is consistent solid role play (even if it isn't a shout off the top of castle parapets type of rp) bought me at least a small piece inside your greater story.

On the topic of DCs
Unless you are going to do away with the special requests all together (which seems unfair unless you retcon stuff people already have), I don't see how you can make their approval "fair" under any other system. As it stands now, any DM that happens upon a PC doing something worthy can fling them a DC. Players can then bank those DCs as "proof" - hey look I do RP - to be shown to the other DMs which may not have the opportunity to see that player in action.
I see the point, that the areas that always seem to have DM interaction are going to see more PCs get more DCs. But by what other means will PCs stand out? I see the suggestion of forum posting & screenshots, but to be frank, I don't have time to post screenshots from all of the time I spend in-game, and even now I have several "back posts" that I want to make on the forum for things that happened IG but I just haven't had the time or energy to write them up. So in short, this method would appear to only favor those that spend their times on the forum, while penalizing those that are actually doing the roleplay in-game.
What is the solution? Well, I think if the DMs police themselves and move around a bit the current DC system will be just fine, and cause the least disruption to the players and staff alike.
NOTE: I'm not knocking the DMs, or how they spend their time, I'm only offering my 2 cents on the idea of "doing away with the DC system".

Wow, now hold on there a moment guys...
Wow, just...
What did i just read? Am i the only person who finds this disturbing?
No offense to Disco and anyone on the team, but what you guys just disclosed...
The predecessor of this here thread, that has grown to enormous proportions, was a wailing wall for the community; i haven't read it all myself, i tried, but i know that the Team most likely had to get through it. This is bad, i think that the thread did more harm than good; hundreds of different opinions on all possible topics in one place is not the way to get accurate feedback. It was a false alarm, it should've been locked or moderated, because the only clear message such threads convey is - we're doomed.
And now you're pulling a "battlegrounds" idea out of the hat, how is that going to help? I have officially joined the panicking party of Amians.
There was a sandbox vs theme park argument in the previous thread, discussion what Amia should be - this or that. There were also possible reasons why people are leaving given, among others - new and better games being released, like GW2.
Dear Team, i urge you to reconsider, i urge the community to see reason and back me up on this. You can't possibly make Amia better than GW2. If you focus your efforts on doing so, hell, even if you actually change the mod a lot and make it close - then people will really move to GW2.
Pvp battlegrounds is not the way to go, you must see this. There are -no- substitutes for real cRPG games like NWN, there is no roleplaying in mmo's. That is the sole reason places like Amia are popular despite their age.
Don't break Amia's spirit please.

I'm a little surprised that you consider the message of the previous topic "We're doomed." Rather, most of it was very positive and encouraging, and certainly gave me a lot of energy and ideas.
Anyhow, Disco's idea is going to be glorious. New toys are never bad. Too bad chicken ball never got properly implemented (tough I always thought the lore was tacky). Nothing will replace plain face-to-face, text-based role-playing, but updating the game every now and then will certainly help maintain interest.
I don't foresee this as some persistent PvP zone where people duke it out day and night, anyway. What it is, is a great tool to facilitate faction conflicts and big plots. Especially if Amia is to move towards some major conflict at the center of its storyline, we're going to need ways to realize it in game.

Don't break Amia's spirit please. We're not breaking Amia's spirit, don't be so alarmist, we're adding another feature to a server. We have quite a few players that split their time between Higher Grounds (or whatever the new arena server is nowadays) and Amia. If players want to engage in battleground roleplay we should cater to them, we're not forcing anyone to charge into the arena, and the arena is remaining strictly IC. As Iron said, there is conflict on the horizon between settlements/factions and we do need a tool to make it easier to facilitate the conflict. @Lioncub, it can be very hit and miss when it comes to DM interactions. I know this because I was in your position for around 3 years before I ever had the chance to put my finger in the pie so to speak. Even then, I didn't get very deep! If you see a DM online punt them a request about what your character might do, if he needs to interact with an NPC, etc, etc. If you've got an idea for a plot PM it to one of us and we'll make sure the right DM gets to see it. We're doing our best to facilitate the roleplay the characters create so don't feel put out just yet.

Besides, I started working on this on August 11, which is ten days before the WTF Happened thread started. We got constructive feedback via PM's and I noticed a running theme in there: lack of 'something to do'. I am not a DM, I am a programmer. This is my answer to that question. Quote: The predecessor of this here thread, that has grown to enormous proportions, was a wailing wall for the community; i haven't read it all myself, i tried, but i know that the Team most likely had to get through it. Haha, I certainly didn't. My forum attention span is about 5 lines of text. Another reason why I'd not be too afraid that I am having a panic attack. @Iron: I got another request to start working on Henball again, who knows...

Especially if Amia is to move towards some major conflict at the center of its storyline, we're going to need ways to realize it in game. This. Absolutely, this. I'll admit, my initial reaction to this news, back when it was being discussed-- I panicked a bit too. But I have full faith in the DM staff. I think, at the bottom line, if you don't want this to be a doomsday/GW2/death-to-Amia PvP Arena, then simply play it differently. It's been emphasized over and over that the power is in the player's hand. Don't panic JUST yet. I think there may be an awkward taste in the mouths of players, because the only Arenas or arena fights we're used to are messy, awkward, and in many cases, more OOC fun than IC driven. HOWEVER, this is something new. Something fresh. It's a means to play out large scale factional conflict. To have synchronized and objective-based DM epic battles. It is -NOT- simple PvP Arena. This is very much going to be a tool to push conflict in the server. Something many people are begging for. And make no mistake. This tool isn't a replacement for conflict. Fighting may -happen- here, but with the frequency of a DM event (I would imagine!). The majority of conflict Rp is going to happen right where it has been. Don't panic just yet. In echoing the words of Tormak, this DM team is the best the server's ever had. I trust them to handle this with the thoughts and opinions of the players in the forefront of their minds.

O, but we will certainly ban all other violence and force everybody to join the Capture the Flag matches. To make things a bit more bearable you will also be required to wear pink underwear and speak High Latin only.
... isn't that a cunning plan?

You can't just cover yourself with "don't like it - don't do it", it's a disgusting part of the mod that's meant to be for everyone, but in fact is only for the "strong willed" -_-. Really, we'd be better off if you'd at least just nuke the damn bosses. Grind would stop, cities would flourish, DC's would flow and people would spend them on RP requests for items. Yes. Lets just remove content that people do to play the game. That will improve the game so much.
I have a secret for you. Everything spawns infinitely, even you, when you're dead. That's not even a valid argument.
If you don't want to build a character without dev-crit, don't. Dev crit isn't required to make a good build anyways. In fact, using any build, you can practically do anything on the server if you play right anyways. That's what most people don't understand, and will probably never understand. PvP for the most part is less about your build, and more about your positioning, and how well prepared you are to counter your opponent. Unless you made your character deliberately bad, it should do alright, if you play it properly.
As far as epic loot goes, you have quite a few options.
A) Don't farm them, and don't care that they exist. B) Don't PvP, since on Amia you have 100 chances to prevent it. And you will never remember that they exist. C) Make IC friends with someone who can kick people's asses for you, with their awesome epic lewt. D) Occasionally go find them, going on an IC adventure to do something, you know, like D&D. E) Trade gold for them, or start an organization to rip people off to obtain them.
Or, you could just complain on the forums that you don't have any, and therefore, everyone who does, is probably just a bad roleplayer.

I roleplay, the same as what other people like me do, I'm sure. I see people hitting bosses often, but guess what? I see them more often not doing doing that. You cannot make a blanket statement that hitting bosses is killing the server (because, let's face it, that is the connection you are making when you state 'Really, we'd be better off if you'd at least just nuke the damn bosses. And if you honestly think it does, well I don't know what to tell you. It's irritating, but hell I gained Lucious' last two levels doing that, mostly because I just felt like it. Boss grinding is boring as [EXPLETIVE REDACTED], and frustrating, so if someone wants to do it, let them. I used to have gripes when I saw the epic loot people were tossing around but I got over it. Would you like to know how? Of course you do! I'll be happy to oblige: I remembered it's a [EXPLETIVE REDACTED] game. So what if X character has Y metric tonnes of epic loot? As you liked to point out, that's an OOC quibble. In regards to 'hey let's give everyone epic loot', no. This is coming from someone that has a few characters with epic loot that may or may not get used. Would you like to know how I got it all? Luck and roleplay. I have seen exactly two epic drops. Both were in a group, and both rolls were lost. Guess what? It's annoying but big deal. Solo boss hunting is the worst, so do you want to know the easy way of dealing with it? Get. A. Party. Oh, holy Jesus, that's a crazy idea. Find some other people IG that want to help? Oh man, then you can roleplay with other people while doing it! That's [EXPLETIVE REDACTED] brilliant?! Believe me, actually chatting and RP during any kind of hunting is freaking awesome and makes the time go by faster. Also, this. Needled247 wrote: Stuff was said here. This server is pretty middle of the road, and will hopefully stay that way. People with various preferences have been adding to it, and it shows. Is that a problem? I don't think so, and a lot of people can feel at least a bit at home here because of it. The place is big enough to evade the stuff that you don't like, you know.

Commenting here, since my name was mentioned. Naivatkal wrote: First of all: Zelly. I won't say I've never taken her hunting or anything, but she never did get an epic loot drop. Still hasn't. It's quite possible to work the "epic loot system" without grinding, but I do acknowledge it's difficult. That said, a lack of epic loot items should have no impact on your enjoyment of the game.

I believe Jes has stated before Zelly has acquired her massive resources through RPing rather than grinding and boss hunting. This is true. Thanks for clarifying, that is what I was trying to get across but I left out a few key words on accident haha.

I am doing just that, i have been doing it for weeks now. You might say that i'm the perfect example of a miraculously cured player, that was addicted to grind and stricken with alt-itis, and ran into a point of realization, that this is not fun at all.
As for my methods, they might not be gentle, but ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) Y U NO MAEK STUFF BETTER1

Really the post was more directed towards others with the same issues. Trying to point out ways so they don't just get disgruntled with people grinding and feeling 'left out'. Best to remember it's a game and don't worry about it Unless your character is worried, in which case you still shouldn't be worried OOC XD I figured you were on the right track with it yourself.

Or! OROROROROROR!!!!!!
Get together a coalition of disgruntled PCs that boss hunt together to try and gain epic loot (also through RP means, of course, not just grinding!) in an effort to drive down prices! Just think about the positive and negative RP that would be generated by the ticked off merchants and the happy consumers!
Just a thought for someone that wants to go for it XD
.... I think I will put this in the concept thread, actually.

Aeqvinox wrote: No matter how good your "justification" for repetitive boss hunting is, it is an OOC action every single time after the first. The epic loot system promotes OOC and enables grinding for wealth. There's merit and a flaw in this. The flaw is that because it's a static module of a cRPG, it cannot be changed each time we do something. There's a strange attractor at the heart of all the monster fighting we do, since I'm fairly sure it's totally impossible to level by hitting each dungeon only once: nothing changes. In a tabletop game the GM would invent new bad guys, have you go off on a different adventure, be able to switch things up from level to level, but that's just never going to be feasible, so let's not scrutinize the OOC aspects of killing the same thing over and over. However: Nav wrote: That aside, I know I am not the only one that spends a finite time hitting bosses. I spend a half hour, maybe an hour every other day going after a couple of bosses, maybe more if I just feel like it. What do you think I do with the other one or two hours I am online? I roleplay, the same as what other people like me do, I'm sure. All action is IC. When you're fighting bosses you are role playing. this is the merit to Aeq's point, that we use OCC information (x% chance of loot dropping, I know this boss will be there, know spawn point is here etc) to prompt IC action (going out killing). We could invent very elaborate justifications for why we do it - rumors of amazing treasure falling into (INSERT MONSTER'S NAME) have come to your attention! - but come on now. Would our characters even need epic loot? Would they risk life and limb going out for something that may or may not be there when they're already hideously wealthy? Glim wrote: Too be perfectly honest, the best way for you to do this is to get IG, interact and RP with other players and characters, and breath life into the world from inside the world itself. This isn't wrong but neither is it correct. People need to put themselves out there, but there must also be people open to new and unexpected experiences in character. I've met some people who are totally down to talk or get swept up into whatever I'm doing with my character, but I've also met plenty of people who totally ignore it, which makes the proposition rather moot. Telling people to get out there and start social RP after they've banged their head for a few days exacerbates the frustration. Speaking from experience.

Would our characters even need epic loot? Would they risk life and limb going out for something that may or may not be there when they're already hideously wealthy? 'All action is IC' is my point. Yes, parts of it is OOC driven, but that's because we are playing a game. The very fact that our characters are there is driven by our OOC want of being here. Now, some people run bosses because they have an OOC need to gain epic items (inferred, based upon casual observation of the propensity for certain player logins to consistently strike bosses many times, as well as observation of party chat from select said individuals as well [read: not all of them in the first group I referred to]). Most of the time, it is IC driven. You are underestimating the greed of certain characters. I have seen it through IC interactions, and it's obvious. Also, you comment assumes all epic hunters are already wealthy. Lucious, my spellsword, is not greedy however he spends time hunting bosses. Why? Because he is looking for a longsword (of course, he has also posted notices stating he is looking for such to purchase, to try the RP avenue as well). There is no other real reason. A +5 shield might be nice, but for the most part he is seeking a new sword. There are a few other miscellaneous items he has heard of, and so he would gladly trade gold or items for one of them as well. Is he wealthy? Well, technically, as he has broken the million mark. But again, he's also generous in that he has donated money, and items, and plans to do more. I'm not selling him as a philanthropist, merely showcasing that character's specific example of not being greedy. It's just a facet of his psyche. In another example, I'm pretty sure I have heard of one character that has been around for a while that will, after amassing a certain level of wealth, gets rid of a great deal of it and started over. Or maybe they only did that once. I swear I heard the player mention it. I could be crazy, as well.

One could also argue that there would be a finite number of mind flayers in the flayer dungeon. Or beholders. Or bandits on the frontier. Pirates on the coast. It really comes to the same thing: Suspension of disbelief for the sake of being a game

This thread is beginning to get quite argumentative and not very on topic, either. I'd really like it if you guys could keep the tone civil and the discussion more on topic.

Not trying to be inflamatory, as I understand Disco was just trying to be transparent in his original post, but what exactly is the point of this thread? Are we supposed to analyze and discuss Yoss' points? Is it a thread where Disco keeps the playerbase up to date on the progress of his new concept? Really? I don't know. If it is the first then I don't really see any difference between the "What Happened to Amia" thread which was locked and this one. Asking for discussion and analysis will generally lead to these types of philisophical disagreements. If it is the later then shouldn't only Disco or the DM team post in the thread.
Also, I agree, pretty much word for word, with everything Xordae wrote.

Just an idea, and I am sure this has been discussed internally, but it seems many dms are very inactive or retired, with many of the timezones and "regions" (the UD comes to mind) left with very sparse coverage, perhaps there are some new ones being looked at or openings that can be filled? Granted a new dm is a risk, who knows what you'll end up with, but it seems the few that are here often have their hands quite full. Maybe some of the "one offs" and small stuff could be taken care of by a newer crew without such an investment in huge story archs and certain players/factions/cities? P.S. I also love the term "fun"gineer. It speaks to exactly what a DM's purpose should be.

*nods* We do constantly evaluate potential new Fungineers for the team and we are definitely aware of certain timezones that get short-shrifted and try to remedy that.

I wanted to split Yossi's post from the 600 posts in the "What happened"-thread because it deserves his own attention. I also wanted to get away from "what has gone wrong" and look at "what can we do right", and head in a somewhat more positive direction. Less bickering over dead donkeys, and that sorta stuff. So, analyzing Yossi's points is fine, and nobody's saying there's a problem with that. It doesn't mean you have to bash somebody's head in over an opinion, however. Xordae's post is an excellent example of what I had in mind. My own contributions are merely explanations of a part of Yossi's essay. They're also up for comments, although you may as well wait till you see what you get.

Kobold paladins exist; usually not in the traditional sense as their society is different to that of a humanoid one, but they still exist. More likely if they're dragonwrought and thus brought up from a more 'noble' background. Back on topic: will be interested in seeing how these implementations play out. If worst comes to worst then can always do away with it in favour of something else, but I think it sounds somewhat interesting, atleast. Would hate for someone to get caught in the middle of it all, heh.

The way people build their Paladins is irrelevant to the way the server will improve. What Disco described sounds a lot like 'Capture and Hold', something I am quite fond of if implemented correctly. Something I'm definitely looking forward to concerning large faction conflicts.

Correct on both point. I haven't said anything because I am waiting for the implementation (I always miss the testing times haha). But I like the idea, it seems to be highly interesting and something that will be used for flavor, not everyday occurrences. In addition, if I read correctly, if this can be applied as needed to areas, it will aid in showing the impact of conflict on certain areas of the server. Ooh rah

Something I would like to know for a true "What happens next" is... How are we going to bring in more players?
What can we do? For X or Y reason playerbase is moving on. I for one would love to struggle to get into A again.'
Why I might have suggestions on how to keep players here, I have none for how to get new ones.

The problem is there really /aren't/ a lot of new players to bring in. Because of the game's age and the already limited playerbase, our rush of newbs has slowed to a trickle.

If they would actually craft a real NWN3 it would be good but ... it would likely be done on 4e or 5e mechanics. I think I have read some good things on 5e changes, at least.
But, yes, bringing people in will be a struggle, it just takes more effort. When it comes down to it, though, NWN is the only real option for a multiplayer RP experience like this. NWN2 is wonky with servers, and the toolset, and there is a lot that can be offered in Amia.
