I like the idea of having vendors in Cordor accessible to only people who proved themselves, possibly through quests, which come in at every so many levels, to give you access to items at a similar level to your character.

Also, yes. I think one of the major aspects is lack of story. Maybe there should be two or several major factions of Amia, and players can opt to either remain neutral, or join the legions to assist and the like.

When I suggested moving the spawn point into a more crowded location, the effect meant to be achieved is exactly what you just described. The idea of - "the streets were covered in "We Want You!" and "Beware The Traitors!" propaganda posters." Is exactly what I'm talking about - getting new players immediately involved in the plot, immediately being a part of the story. I know I would want to be a part of a huge story like that, and I believe new players would too.

In my opinion, getting new players involved in the RP and storyline just as they log in is the key. If it should be done through technical changes of moving the spawn point or enhancing the plot in Cordor entirely I'd honestly prefer the latter, but the odds for that to happen seem pretty slim to me.

Though a shameless parapharse of my previous suggestions; I do believe it would benefit the server a lot if more of it's players were aware of what the current plotline actually are. Not every detail of course, much should be secret, but at least being able to get an overall idea of the environment they jump into. That is something I do find quite lacking today. Perhaps a new topic could be stickied in DM events: 'The Political and socio-economic situation of Amias settlements'? A topic that would have an updated collection of information that is publicly known, such as who is in charge, who are at war, who are have trade dispute, who trades, population, crime, etc. That would, I believe, make it easier to make and tailor characters to what is happening, and thus partake in it.

Excellent point. I'll gather some of the most important things I've picked up in the past few pages:

1) Revitalize Cordor as a hub. There were many good ideas to make it more important. Trade, crafting, party finding, travel connections, quests, faction presence, diversity of areas and opportunities (develop a new slums district in the sewers, a touch of lawlessness?). Possibly get rid of some areas and merge their functions into one metropolis, not as tightly governed as the current Cordor. A large city has room for all sorts of RP on its outskirts and underbelly.

2) Place the spawning point better. That's not to say in the governmental square, but in some rowdy, neutral territory adventurers could flock around. The docks are very barren. The city could do with a redesign anyhow.

3) A master narrative to involve the entire playerbase. Create a counterbalance to Cordor, and make both sides more important. A land-grab, a cold war. Scripted possibilities of participation, diplomacy and politics, close DM interaction with factions, rewards for joining either side, things to involve new PCs the moment they step into the island. Options for advancement in DM and player factions to increase your influence in Cordor and the other place, which gives a reason to hang around and interact. Cordor is a huge bureucracy, more openings for PC involvement can be developed. This requires some IC work to make adventurers more welcome and to intitiate other changes, but changes as big as this also need DM support to confirm it's the direction we're all determined to take. "Do something IC" is cool, but something of this scale needs a unified will.

4) Inform players of recent plots better. I think the Know Your Leaders topic was pretty nice (can't find it right now though), but many of the DM topics are a bit too long and confusing to get a good idea of what's currently relevant and known.

5) If the DMs have realized the need for a unified direction as Yossarin implied, let us know. Give us a mission statement to adapt to and get inspired by. A vision for us to work together to achieve.

Several other players PMed me about Cordor and the big story, so there's definetely interest. I think we'll be talking to Yossarin in the near future about some possibilities, but permanent change won't happen with just player enthusiasm.

Perhaps B should be merged into A, at least for the time being. Both servers would have immediate access to each other. The player limit on the new, larger server could be increased to sustain a higher number of consecutive logins. Unless there is a stability issue with that.

I believe that's not possible. AFAIK, there's only a certain size your module can actually be and Amia A is probably pushing it. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

I will say that IronAngel has some good points in his posts, but then again; alot of people do. Who doesn't like being part of a epic story?

I also think that revitalizing Cordor might not be enough though, seeing as how alot of people have just been indefinitely banned from there since the beginning of time.

Restore portal rods in Cordor and change spawn point to Waukeen temple. Please. Please. I will start a citizens watch group with my level 4 and assure the council that citizens will be protected from porting level 30 baddies, somehow, anything.

South Cordor/Docks = criminal area is a great idea. You'll get black market stalls it's dangerous but tempting to visit, for better equipment.

The big hooks are when you can GAIN something concrete through rp. A position on a council, ownership of an area. A group of evil PCs who want to do more then one-on-one pvp, but (like the recent plague) create a big situation which has lasting impact. Some kind of entrenched warfare between factions which isn't decided by pvp, but rp and influence, allowing mercenaries to set up camp without it having to be an immediate pvp fight. Then you're picking sides based on what your character *stands for*, not whether their deity insists you pvp that person. And if you win, you drive them right out of the area and get a safe stronghold.

In short: to make level 2-20 players feel they can compete for real recognition/achievement, and to make evil vs good exciting and long-term instead of 'then we have to kill them.'

I know I've seen Yoss say it before- work at it IC and present viable reason IC for Cordor to make the change. If I'm wrong on this, I'm sure he'll let me know.

It's not like Cordor was a hub of quality RP before, though. It may be empty now, but we certainly don't just want to restore the way things were. We want to take the current serious story further, involve more people, etc.

I'm in a bit of a helpless situation myself: the PC I would involve in Cordor politics and who's interested in making an impact has interests and goals contrary to my own. He'd probably work for nice things for everyone, but that needs to be counterbalanced by some more questionable developements. Things most nice characters probably don't want to pursue but which would add a lot of dynamics and excitement. That's why I'm appealing to the DMs and to everyone's collective agreement on "this is where we'll go" instead of just play towards them IC. Before I can start pushing my PC's agendas vigorously, I need someone or something to counterbalance all the positives. We certainly don't want Cordor to be all sunshine, tolerance and unity, even if that's what our PCs want.

I am struggling not to reveal too much of my hand, and have been for years, but now I am seeing that Iron and Phearnun appear to be intuiting what I've been up to.

Theander and a few others, I apologize if it seems like I'm ignoring your points and suggesting the way it is is how it will be. That's not true. I believe your points have a lot of validity, and what I have wanted for a very long time is for Cordor to be the players' city. However, the original Cordor (pre-revolution) simply did not have an existing structure that allowed for that. When Leggomi introduced the revolution story, I swooped in and carried it into something much larger, and suddenly realized that if I build an infrastructure that can be "taken over" (by force or fierce diplomacy) by the players, Cordor would be able to be the kind of area that would address a lot of the things players have wanted to address since I first started DM'ing. You want a powerful hand in the fate of things. You want a level of responsibility that encourages you to RP with others, and them to RP with you.

Now, had I gone straight from point A to point Z, as in, just thrusting the players there, the players would not have a solid idea of the infrastructure, of how to use it, develop it, manipulate it. They wouldn't have a solid notion of their responsibility...because they would not have had to earn it. They would not care about it as much, because they did not have to earn it. I have always believed that if you sacrifice and struggle to earn something, and it is given to you, you will care for it and thinking about it a lot more than if it is handed to you after minimal effort.

Cordor, City of the People, has always been a cheeky hint buried beneath the IC - it can be a City of the Players, too, but not after a ton of IC roleplay to make that happen.

I am going to point at Xaviera. I did not simply appoint Xaviera into a position of power and authority in Cordor (and she is well-liked, and regularly NPCs recognize her and cooperate with her, and she's even been responsible for curbing some of the less favorable decisions the city's council could have come to). The player worked at getting the Temple of Love put together, showed genuine concern for the people and the city, and this got her elected when elections came.

No, elections are not on any set schedule. At the moment, they only happen when enough pressure is placed on the Council to have them. :)

To answer the fears about permadeath (as in, no one is going to risk IC permadeath to get the changes they want to the city), that is where I have to put my foot down and say, "Tough it up." That risk is part of the reward. The individuals who have their claws on the city have a very tight grip on it and there is risk involved in trying to change it very much from their design. There are plenty of players who have been willing to risk it, and do, and these individuals also happen to be of a caliber of character that makes me feel good about them one day potentially having influence over how other players experience a part of the server.

Besides, that permadeath that is threatened isn't exactly permanent forever no matter what you do you will never in a thousand years get the character back. In DnD, there are always ways around this. What it means is you cannot on your own for free respawn and be somewhere else. It means you're "locked away" somewhere and somebody has to try to find you, or that your body is ash and someone needs to find a way to True Res you. Which is something DMs oversee and we micromanage and sometimes invent some difficult additions to how it must function in a given situation so that there is a level of sacrifice or RP that must be made to balance things out.

There's a lot more going on here behind the scenes, by the way, especially since this topic started, but I'm not giving out any of those spoilers. But let me just say a couple of players are coming to conclusions and suggestions mere hours after we came to them ourselves, so those people may be pleasantly surprised.

Also, QPR, that is a good idea, and I actually had done that for everyone a while back. Put it all into the Rules & Lore forum.

And then the hacker hit us and it was all gone. And I was so torqued because I had just finished it all recently and never had the drive to do it again. I might still, but until then, the best way is to ask direct questions utilizing the Lore forum.

So the moral of this story, you want something to happen, you do it In Game. You want Cordor to move to be more adventurer friendly, you start lobbying for it IC. You want to be able to use the portal rods, you convince the council. You want permadeath... start researching a spell that will break the permanent hold respawning has on this world and destroy/destabilise the peace and tranquility it claims to have.

Hell, that's three internal DM events that players can put in the making right there.

For the most part, yes. The caveat there is that if you emark on a campaign to change something in such a way that we, as DMs, feel ultimately hurts the server overall and cannot be used to improve anything, well, we'll tell you in advance not to bark up that tree so you don't waste your time.

But that rarely, rarely ever happens, so it is hardly something you'd need to worry about. And it doesn't apply to bad things happening, like trying to burn down Kohlingen, in spite of what some people will say. I yearn to see the Holy City crumble into so many stones and broken bones. Let their theocracy be preached in the death rattles of their men and the lamentations of their women.

HEh.. I agree, Yossi has given a LOT of room for Cordor to be influenced by Players to be honest , as long as they understand the following axiom:

"You can't, always get what y'want.. but sometimes you just might find.. you get what you need!" -- Rolling Stones, "You Can't always get what you want."

He's going to make you work for it, he's going to make you think, and be ready to accept the consequences of what you want to do. But, he will give you the chance to do something interesting with Cordor. I speak from personal experience and am thankful for the opporotunities given in past by him to have a hand in shaping Cordor in it's revolutionary era.

but that wont fix B after the fact if split again. maybe if they are focusing on A-mia to fix its RP player base with hubs they should just move mindflayers, beholders and Actand over to Boss-mia and we give them....Frozenfar and or the underdark.

yes A-mia is large, but atleast your on the same island and RP/events...ect can spread out, B-mia is not as lucky.

That's well and good but it doesn't really solve our "problem." It's available for dedicated PCs who are already active in the game. Our potential to influence the world doesn't directly bring old players back or new ones entirely. It's a great start and something I may use to push some ideas, but you're kidding yourself if you think the dedication of a few PCs can create a master narrative that involves every player on the server. Yoss's post is encouraging, and I await to see what else the DMs have in store, but the conclusion of this topic should not be "If you want something done, do it IC." That's only one step. We are, after all, talking about an OOC problem here, and that requires OOC action to rectify, a shared vision we can all partake in.

But one thing we should absolutely take from this is "Come to Cordor, it's cool." This topic certainly made me log on again. I'm struggling the urge to make a new PC to realize all my plans, but perhaps I'll instead badger others into doing the dirty work and stick with one main.

This. I know in a significant way, DM's are required, but the more you can drive things as a player, and there are tons of ways to do it, Do it. :) It's not as obvious playing a good or neutral PC because you may not be inclined to more power, more money.. that guy looked at me funny kind of motivations, but with some work and an agenda, you can become a nexus for RP for others. Something very important that needs to be addressed is the issue of level disparity. If you can employ a lowbie, without making them feel like a minion, you will keep a player active and dedicated.

Thanks for these bits. I hope people are now at least a little encouraged. Permadeath is not the end, it's just food for future roleplay.

I just thought I'd throw my two cents into the pot here and suggest that most of the power gamers left to power game somewhere else. We have thirty people on right now, as I type this. And those people are, in my opinion, thirty interested role players who've made investments into the plots their characters are involved in.

I'm okay with a slightly smaller community if the quality of that community is higher, to be honest.

I mean, let's be honest. I some of those guys to death, and they're great people to level with. But they don't contribute much to role playing or plots beyond causing trouble on a whim. And I feel like a large number of those people sort of scooted onto other things. Are they welcome back? Sure! But are we going to chase after them for hours on end? Doubtful.

I'm not using a blanket term by any means though. I know there are some great people missing too, but I'm trying to keep things sunny over here in Tarkuul!

So.

When are we going to properly advertise about Amia? And where?

Someone care to make a banner that can be put into a forum signature? I'm pretty damn active on some other forums, might as well advertise there.

We can always advertise on a PnP RPG site, like Pen and Paper Games. I've used their forums a couple times to find gaming groups, and though it's mostly North America, it's still a pretty significant player base. And being able to drop in on a persistent RP server is highly attractive to gamers who are having a hard time finding a group to join.

This. This is exactly why I love Amia. My old gaming group is mostly broke up and Amia is the perfect place to get my fix.

Clean for fifteen years? Fuck that, I'll mainline this shit for life :D

1. servers seems to be built for experienced players, my toons die as there's no clue on what lvl should a territory can be visited. I doubt a guideline will be more disappointing than a toon who dies every time by entering to an unkwon territory.
2. PvP vs RP: the PvP punishable while players who try to fix their low RL self esteem play VERY offensive, abusive toons. Please, if I was a well armed, trained warrior, I would not let a a li`l ***er harass me or talk to me like I was a dog! (Just because the gods will kick me in the *** for slapping him!) So, I solo most of the times then I face the 1. point :(
3. to play evil is frustrating because of the self-righteous characters (who are not better, LG paladins played with an LE attitude) so no evil toons and/or they not played fully ---> no plotting
4. no DM`s or at USA times only, they seem not to interact too much
5. spellcasters can easily beat a same lvl warrior anytime thanks to their powerful summons
6. new players need some extra attention from DM team so they'll feel more welcomed and not as an NPC

1) That is supposed to encourage asking around. Unfortunately, if no one is around them who do you ask? Cordor being dead most fo the time doesn't help.
2) What? Like, seriously, what?
3) I find it unfortunate that you have come to that conclusion. It makes me a sad panda :(
4) Nothing I can say about that.
5) They are mages, it's part of the game. But there are ways to counter that.
6) See number 4.

Just my initial, thought-out reactions to what you brought up. Nothing above is be being a jerk or anything.

That's chalked up to RP. And your generalization about the people that play such characters is offensive to me, and I do not play any 'cock, bossy characters'. I do, however, know that there are a good deal of players that are not 'trying to fix their low RL self esteem'.

I saw people do it a lot a while back when the server was more populated, though like I said in my other post with Cordor being dead (and the server in general), it's hard to ask around.

I've gotten one on one time with a few DMs before. You just need to take your own initiative sometimes.

Well just to clarify... There are times when DM's are active more often and when they are not. Which is completely all right given the different time zones. That's what I was trying to say...

But then again, so what? The server I was playing on before Amia was an Australian one. I did not meet DM's at all except for weekends. And quite frankly, I did not mind. I see DMs as a bonus, a little cherry on top, but the cake itself are players.

What's the icing on top, then?

See?

By the way, have you noticed the DM in the left corner? Not a coincidence.

I placed an ad on the nwn forums on the Atari site a few days ago, informing people to contact Gunz for information.

Power gaming and role playing aren't mutually exclusive. I'm not going to lie, I have trouble enjoying characters with weak builds.

Hey kanordog_again

Your mentality appears to be based on hack and slash, I'm going to agree with the prior points but in order not to sound like a jerk I'm going to explain why.

1. Servers are built for RP. In real life if you walk into South Africa away from tour guides, the Masai kill you, or capture you because in wartimes white people equal money. A better equation is walking into gangland territory in your local suburbs without knowing. Unknown territory in real life usually means asking around or die/get injured. A guideline in the map room might be nice, but it's not mandatory IC, and IC you can ask people where is good to hunt, otherwise called asking for directions. Guidelines are things you find in a hack and slash server, not an RP one.
2. That is VERY true on hack and slash servers, and CAN be true on RP servers, but is not universally true, especially around here. Most of us here will pick an abusive character to roleplay at some point, but often it's about watching the interraction (and half the time it's about seeing other characters beat us down, we find it hilarious). Though more to the point, it's about the RP. PvP abuse and punishment is based on if they do it Outside of RP, if they abuse you IC, and challenge you, or they get offended IC (and it's actually IC), then they are doing PvP abuse.
3. All paladins are Lawful Evil, they commit genocide on any population that doesn't follow their creed. Seriously, how much more evil can you get.
4. DMs have their own life, I still think we need more, but then it's a huge commitment and though I stuck my own hand up earlier, I did that on the basis that a fair percentage of this player base have met me and gamed under me in real life. No matter how enthusiastic who becomes a DM is based on demonstratable involvement in Amia and dedication, not how much they say they will be. The fact that 1 DM has to deal with 30 players and can't do all of them at once, and that they are rarely around, means we have too few DMs, but a recruitment drive won't necessarily fix that automatically.
5. Warrior, take a level in rogue, UMD. Warrior, drink a potion, kick arse. Warrior, get some see invisibility item, wizard dies.
6. Though I don't disagree, see 4. Also how exactly does one tell if a player is new and not just attention hogging (unlikely, but still a point).

Honestly, if you're going to play evil, you need to accept the fact you will have losses, and some major ones at that and that you will not always get what you want. There is a balance of good and evil that needs to be maintained, and any one who pokes their head above the radar, of course is going to get put down sooner or later. (Imagine how much shorter Gunz Talonite plot would have been if the antagonists were leaving secret messages conveniently on desks and obvious 'suss' activity around the isle)

If you want a major win, put in some major effort and don't run around wearing black and whatever with your Banite/Cyric/Shar/whatever symbol so blatantly obvious that it attracts attention to you and your plans...

Well, thats my two cents anyway... feel free to shoot me down!

If I'm being honest the whole player-driven struggle between good and evil is getting tired. You need a new challenge! *pokes a screwdriver in your gas tank and starts a leak*

So I'm thinking of coming back and playing a new character. Take that, diminishing player count! *POW* Thing is, I realised that the more lore that I know, the less confident I feel about making a character that fits. Learning these things a little at a time, usually through my backwards and ignorant character, is the way for me to go, I think.
