Is much appreciated. However, myself(Drekgar) and my friend(Blinki) are roughing it on brand new toons as this is his first foray into NWN. I have showed him all I know but thats not much. So while the extra 50k in gold would be awesome, or the +3 daggers you all tried to give would rock we just want to earn them ourselves.

Thanks

Well, it's a good job you never accepted the 50k from whomever offered it as it would be against the rules.

o x o So is a +3 dagger to a newbie because I'm pretty sure that's not in their level range...

Yeah, probably right. I wasn't sure how much they are worth and didn't think about the level restriction. :)

A plain ordinary +3 dagger with nothing on it is a Level 10 item.

This topic has left me wondering about gifting of magical items to lower-level characters and whether or not it's possible to have the level restriction of the item (ie. the minimum level at which it can be used) retained in the description once you've exceeded that level. I know there are a few occasions where I've tried to give something to a lower-level and been told they can't use it, but of course I couldn't tell because the minimum level was no longer visible to me and so I had no idea what it was.

Is this hard-coded and unchangeable?

Regarding the issue of twinking, the rules state that "Twinking constitutes as follows: giving another player items or gold that they did not deserve. Gifts are allowable so long as the person will be able to use them within 2 levels." So the only way to find out if it's twinking or not is to actually barter the item (though they don't have to complete the transaction) or drop it on the ground so that they can see it and tell you whether or not it meets the 'within two levels' stipulation. That is, you can't look at it in your own inventory and decide in advance, ie. without consultation.

Well, this isn't at all easier than the methods you suggested above but you can always launch NWN toolset, add all the properties on it, and see what level it is. It corresponds to what it is on Amia.

When in doubt, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Or take my approach and realize that a higher level PC gifting a lower level PC with something even remotely questionable is patronizing. Just like if you were standing outside of a Starbucks and some Wall Street asshole walks by and throws a handful of change in the frap you just bought.

Curious I randomly have been known to buff lowbies in Cordor for doing little missions for me. Is that alright? Never thought of it til now.

Yep, that's fine, Charles. Just don't follow them around and do that from outside of their group. Babysitting is against the rules, but buffing people without nannying them is fine.

Is how it should be when epic PCs pull that crap.

That would depend on the character, really. Personally I'd say 'Thanks for the help' and go on my merry way.

Also, IIRC Bells asks the lowbie if they want a buff first.

Oh, depends on the buffer too. If they are haughty and 'You can't do this without my help' people have a right to go 'Well screw you!'

:( Or it could be like. "Oh thank you for increasing my chances of making it back alive on your quest of going into the sewers killing rats and undead for a reward. Since I may likely die without some form of aid, and death is something terrible so whatever help I can get I will surely take."

And yea, I don't buff without asking. Not like I give everyone every single buff for willy nillys and no ic reason or sense.

If a lowbie character of mine got buffed by someone who can quickly and without pause cast a dozen protective spells on me, you can be sure that character would be too stunned to be so self-righteous and ungrateful that they'd chew the mage out. In fact, they might be scared by the sheer possibility it presented to them. Can they kill as easily as they protect? Could they just as easily turn me into a rock and let me live the rest of my days as a skipping stone?

A typical level 2 PC shouldn't be so stupid that they'd spurn the assistance of a powerful mage, especially when they sure as hell can't cast such spells in either strength or quantity. I certainly hope they wouldn't be stupid enough to think that they absolutely don't need any help. Some people might like getting hurt and proving themselves stronger by making it out alive without help, but most people are sure to be grateful for any help. I know I'd not turn help away if it meant a few less scars.

And just think! The powerful mage casts on someone who happens to be fascinated by magic and that poor level two in turn tries to pursue an apprenticeship with the mage who so selflessly helped him! It's a conduit for RP and shouldn't be so ruthlessly bashed OOC simply because there are people who need to prove something to themselves IC. It's IC. If you think it's poor RP for a goodly mage to assist new arrivals on a mission he gives them himself, then that's fine. I don't. To each their own.

I just want to say that Yossi meant his post as a joke and my brain simply didn't read it as that. It was probably the "pull that crap" part at the end that made me think he was just bashing Charles. I was wrong about that and I acknowledge my mistake. So I want to apologize to you, Yossi, for making you out to be the bad guy by claiming that you were attacking Charles in any way. I really didn't hear any humor in my head when I read it. In my defense, I had a really long day at work and was already irritated by other people who are a bit stupid and self-righteous.

That said, I think your response to my post was very much uncalled-for. Name-calling between players (and DMs) should never happen, no matter how upset any one party is. I don't think you're stupid or self-righteous and I didn't say you were in my post. But I'm sorry if you read it as such. I had no intention of insulting you as a person, which is why I stuck to "It's IC" and said that the character would be stupid or self-righteous - not the player.

I try not to go out of my way to insult people, least of all people who do a lot of work to make everyone's experience here better in some form or another. So again, I am very sorry for misconstruing the intent of your post and for replying to it in a way that made you think I was attacking you. It was not my intent to do so.

A Shaundakulite (?) can guide and make sure that the people arrive at a certain destination, right? As long as there is a destination that isn't combat related, like a boss or anything. I was primarily thinking the Gauntlet and such.

"Aid those in need."

As long as no rules are broken (babysitting lowbies in higher level areas, twinking, and so forth etc), it is legitimate to aid lower levels as your character's conscience and/or religious dogma dictates.

But Ulir specifically stated Gauntlet, which is an Epic Store.

 <--- (Humor hint)

Apology accepted, but ultimately not necessary. Apology on my behalf made, and you know why. Same for Charles. Not for Brown Blur, though, I was never referring to you at all!

a comment about generosity... I think its a bit unfair we have to under pay lowbies for something we would pay a higher level much more to do RP wise just to avoid this "twinking" stuff.
