Where do they come from? I mean, There are no mythal mines... They just appear in looted monsters. What's their source? Do they fall from the sky or phase out of another dimension?

If they're crystallized pieces of weave I imagine they just sort of condense in places somehow, probably more likely in areas with a lot of magical activity. But feasible in any area that isn't a dead magic zone.
I wouldn't know for sure, though.

Mystra blessed Amia with them from her ample bosom, I thought... I am maybe/probably wrong though.

The Amia Sidebar! wrote: About Amia: Mythal Crafting System ("The MCS")
Release date: July 26, 2006. | Updated: March 12, 2008.
The year is 1372 DR, and the heroes of Amia have chased the seemingly benign Red Wizards from its main towns. Clerics of Mystra have taken back the mythal crystals, from the Frostmaiden's lair, and have split them into smaller shards and harnessed their power with crystal forges. These crystals may be used, like a magnifying lens, to focus a fine strand of the Weave into a material item, such as a suit of armor or a ring, and thus there is crafting potential.

I wouldn't know for sure, though. Sounds like the most logical answer.

If Yoss doesn't answer before tomorrow, I'll type it up before work or something. But there's a lot to it.

Quote: Tale Thirty-two: Miss Widgern's TaleI've found some mythral crystals on my way, But since it seems a hundred stones they weigh, I go to Kohlingen to craft some rings, And forge a couple other magic things! I go into the magic forge tonight, To see the forge aglow in magic light!
But unlike all the other times before, I feel to learn a little mythral lore, Instead of handing crystals over to, The Mystrans then just watching what they do! I ask the Mystran woman standing round, Just what these mythals are that so abound!
She said that long ago on our fair isle, There ruled some Red Wizards dark and vile, And with them vile Winter Queen's dark cult, They plotted then and brought a dark result, They crystalized the weave in solid mass, Into these Mythal crystals weave did pass!
But word reached Mystra's Monolith in time! The wizards vowed to stop this awful crime! The mystrans marched to Forrstakkr to fight And bring the Thayans and the cult to light, And there they found the cultists' dark machine, Still robbing Mystra's weave! A vile scene!
The Wizard's March defeated their dark plot, And to their dark machine destruction brought, But for a reason that nobody knew, The Mythal shards today still form anew! Did their dark plans a lasting change instill? Or could some dark machine be running still?
At any rate the wizards quickly learned, That energy in shards could be returned, To Mystra and the weave from where it came, And quickly this became the Mystrans aim! They take the Mythal shards that they recieve, And release magic back into the weave!
But in this process they discovered too, That if the Mythal energy goes through, An item as the power is released, The power of the item is increased! The Mystrans saw potential for new art, And so their crafting business got its start!
Then of the minor details I ask, About just how she operates this task, But she would not reveal them to me, There's danger if it's done not properly, And so our conversation reached an end, With new respect the forge I then attend!
 Shameless self-quote!

Pfft. Just ask Beldor if you want to know about mythals. >_>

Tbh, Miss Widgern's tale is accurate. Of course, there's a teeny little bit more to the incident and its aftermath, but only a couple of characters know anything about that.

Yup. Interested characters should do the footwork Ic, because not everything is laid out in a book on a public forum.

Something as important and frequently used should have a little more description then "find out IC"

It has plenty, and if you are paying attention, you will see that it has been given. You asked for history and intricate detail. These aren't being given. This is not the place for arguments.

I think what he wants is the "current up do date magitechnical analysis" of mythals as it appears in Scientific Faerunian. The history is more or less already here in the thread.
Fact is, I could give that, but I'd be stepping on the toes of actual player characters who have published research about mythals.

Yes. I was sort of looking forward to a in-depth and intricate explanation made by one of the DM's on the subject. What i am mainly concerned about is that if the Mythalshards we PC's collect from monsters and other locations appear OUTSIDE amia, too, or if it's amia only related. Or are there mythalforges outside our little playable isle?

Mythal as it appears in Amia is something unique to the islands of the Trackless Sea, but the resources are slowly spreading to areas connected to those islands (like Khem) where, if found dropped by monsters or bandits or other unsavories, is assumed to have been taken from the corpse of a slain adventurer who visited those areas.
If you do your own research about mythal you will uncover that there are such things as Mythal elsewhere in Faerun/Toril, but they are quite different from the Amian (I should say Forrstakkrrian) variant that proliferated in the wake of the Wizard's March on the Aurilite caves north of Howness. By different I mean ridiculously more powerful with far more awesome capabilities. The Amian "magic crystals", which is supposedly what they are, were probably dubbed mythals in order to drive the consumer market by associating them with their epic namesakes.
People who are in the know about Amian mythals should realize that they are, frankly, a finite source. One day the source may be depleted, to make way for some other convention of enchanting.

I will confirm that the only forges that exist are all that exist, can exist, and will exist, unless something happens.
