GAH! Stop with the misappropriation of historical events! Firstly, roleplay/fiction doesn't compare very well to real life, even though the former is often modeled after/representative of the latter. Genocide doesn't happen often enough to justify a lot of characters who are "Just evil, just 'cos". I'm not saying those characters are bad. They're great. Occasionally. It's rare that someone turns out like that (and still in the vast majority of cases, there's a reason they're so broken). Well-motivated evil however can be a lot more compelling. It's also some hard work and more difficult to accomplish though, so I can see why the other kind may be favoured.

But still, no. This is fiction, that's why we can have "Just Evil" characters. Not because it's well-represented in history. The examples are the "vocal minority" of historical events

No. The US were manipulating trade which made it impossible for the Japanese to not attack. Their ultimate success was intended to cripple US forces and minimise their contribution to the war. The US were not fine just sitting back.

But it does illustrate the point, in a weird reverse: no one attacks Tarkuul because Tarkuul doesn't give them a good reason. If for instance they allowed any evil faction to take prisoners there, eventually enough players would try and throw their weight at it. I can't speak of Tarkuul's motivations but doing this does reduce risk. And they probably also don't want non-affiliates using the prison for non-Tarkuul business anyway (Also for that it's worth I've never needed a prison to imprison someone. Kidnapping and holding works just fine, and if your character is careful and resourceful, 98% infallible).

Highlighted these 'cos I know about them a bit better, but they aren't really good posterchilds of evil and they don't even have a great deal to do with gods. Yeah, even the holy wars, they were pretty political (something of a social cause to it as well, but I guess part of that is religion). The atrocities were soldiers/mobs losing their humanity and succumbing to base instincts (massacre in Jerusalem, some parts of the French Rev). Afterwards they more or less went back to being people. When you talk about an evil character with an evil god, you seem to mean "All evil all the time!" or near enough, and none of those real life examples really come close (though it's not difficult to argue Hitler/Stalin as evil particularly later in their lives, one may blame insanity however). But for the rest it really wasn't all that bad. Just regular wars fought by regular people who, afterwards more or less got on with their lives (if they survived). If your point was just that evil acts (and the rare "evil person") exist in real life, fair enough, but it probably goes without saying.

That said, yes people with evil gods are probably pretty likely to be "Total Evil", but this reality is so far removed from your historical examples that the examples aren't really very supportive. I personally feel compelled to try and make evil characters who aren't crazies (people who do things without a good reason are generally considered crazy). For me, it's only interesting to read "total evil" *sometimes*. Dark Knight's Joker worked *BECAUSE* he was the ONLY ONE who did what he did just 'cos. That's what made him special. ALL the other villains were in it for revenge (Two-face), money (boring gangsters), social upheaval (Liam Neeson). The Joker was special. A faction of Jokers is kind of boring (though I'm sure people like to try, because they saw the DK Joker and liked it). But that's just me, and I'm not here to tell people what to play.

Sorry, I wouldn't have posted at all (especially since the topic has started veering away) but the historical examples bugged my inner history nerd.

see so the DMs do listen to everyone and do thier job, so the 2 pages of the people bitching about nothing is a load, as proved by your post here..

It would be nice if you stopped invalidating their thoughts based on two sentences that I typed in only one singular subject out of many in this thread. In your own way you actually are proving what many others are saying about some of the player base on the server.

I can see that.

Bob "DM I mined up 1000 units of Mercury, I want to dump it in the water supply of Cordor,Dale, Uhm,Wharftown...ect and give them all Mercury poisoning"
DM "why do you want to poison them, and what will you get out of it"
Bob "because I'm MEAN, and poisoning people is MEAN, and I want to prove I'm more MEAN then the other MEAN people."

There are methods to the madness, even if they are difficult for someone to see because they are not all knowing of another's character, but there are people out there who also like to make things around them suffer for the sake of suffering, as much as an Ilmater follower may wish to help for the sake of helping.

But really, being a rp server, a character who wants to perform a terrorist attack on a town has a reason to want to do them, a matter of faith is a very basic answer, then you get into the reason why the character wishes to adapt that faith...and there are gains actually expected from doing a terrorist act; even if the 'gain' is not material or imagined validation toward another purpose.

like maybe if it was something more in depth like, you were destorying farmland and live stock so the town or maybe the island at large
would have a famine and look who happens to have a stockpile of food they might be willing to sell for a inflated price.
something where you have a clear reason to want to do it because you have something to gain.

...Your advice does not help here, because there have been things requested to this effect.

Little bit of a history fail, the analogy is pretty weak.

You see the Japanese (because "Japs" is considered a racist term, cracker) were nuked because they did not know how to surrender/lose, culturally it was unacceptable. (there was more to it than that but that's the simple version..and come to think of it, the US hardly has a LG alignment if you are trying to make it fit a DND analogy.)

...and the US was not exactly "sitting back". (The US had been already been opposing Japan's affairs since the start of their take over of northern Indochina, the Japanese expected to greatly hinder the pacific fleet and prevent further intervention in the conquest of the remainder of Indochina.)

Not sure what that has to do with Tarkuul or NWN in general, but nice try.

It might be best for you to play an evil character and actively get involved in the rp so you have an idea of what you are talking about instead of biased observation please.

Neither DCs nor DMs are required to affect change on Amia. All you need are a group of fun roleplayers and a common directive. Remember that it takes time for your character's directives and goals to become more established. I always try to make a character I'll have fun playing, one who has strong viewpoints or very strange quirks that will likely conflict with someone at some point (ie. innocently munching on the severed leg of a kobold victim while wandering through the dungeon behind comrades). I find there are followers and leaders on RP servers. If you want to be a leader and initiate interesting roleplay events then you have to think of a unique cause and inspire other players to join it. When my petty villain was humbled and humiliated, having been captured by Kelemvorites and put on trial, it set him off hellballing badgers into oblivion and instead inspired him to start up a group that ran around the island capturing good guys and putting them on mock trials where they were accused of wearing unfashionable apparel or helping too many grannies cross the road, etc ... it generated pretty hilarious RP most of the time and even when the captured folks wanted to leave we still had fun putting their (imagined) "corpses" through ridiculous persecution.

It also helps to have some sort of adversary. Adversaries really make roleplay so much more fun if both sides are not OOC whinging at everything that happens is their disfavor (tip: avoid these adversaries at all costs). What would Harry Potter be without Voldemort? Just some kid with a magic stick at a fancy boarding school. Where would Frodo Baggins be without Sauron? Probably still stuck on page 1 of The Fellowship of the Ring smoking his pipe and watching the hair grow thicker on his unshaven feet. Unfortunately while conflict between PCs usually makes for the best RP some of players here take IC loss very OOCly. So choose your adversaries wisely. When you find a good one then try to interact with them as often as possible, be polite and let them know OOC you had fun.

You also always want your character to always have a twist. Perhaps your wandering character finds some sort of cursed item that possesses him/her at night time, causing them to run around muttering to cutlery while stealing peoples mail... or something like that, which will generate mystery and inspire rp for you and those around you. Also, if you are feeling bored with your wanderer then you might want to try a different sort of character or alignment. How about a cleptomaniac gnome who has a overpowering conscience that makes him want to return everything he's stolen five minutes later?

the point was.... Tarkuul is not stupid because its run by a someone who thinks of the well being and safety of the city.... mind you its alive so it cares.

I'm not the living city so I can say I 100% know how it thinks and works but its logical from what I can tell, and logic says...
the living city does not let people go out and by your admittance go out and do evil stuff because they are evil and might just want to do evil stuff for the hell of it...

its not going to let some group hide in it after a PVP rampage for the sake of rampage, even less so if they are draging people back with them , unless there is some pay off(like the living city sent them out to do it or something.)

as for making a evil character, dont really have much of a want to destroy amia right now, but if I do I'll get right on that.

It has let people done all of these, but there's things you need to do first! You can't just do it willy nilly! I want to stress that this is all doable, but I can't give away how to do it or it's no fun for you guys. Tarkuul is definitely evil. No spoilers there. :)

If you don't mind some helpful advice to get a more active evil presence? As a DM and admin I've found that evil PCs thrive very well with the carrot on a stick method. Write up some fairly powerful NPCs for Zanshibon, Shadowscape and Tarkuul. Have them recruit evil PCs as minions, give them concrete goals and tasks, that are both reasonably doable and require discretion and subtlety. Offer some modest rewards for success and a heavy dose of ass-kicking for failure. Outsider servants of evil deities also work well, really give those clerics and blackguards reason to go out and lay down their God's will. I promise you evil will bloom, actually form decent groups, and good will do the same once they have a legitimate threat to stand against that doesn't revolve around mindless PvP :)

Well, I kicked a couple of PMs off to DMs.

We'll see if its worth the investment level I am willing to do to make an "evil" faction or if all this "evil is not worth playing" is the truth.

As I said, I'm a old hand at NwN and DMing...not here mind you..but I am more then willing to work within the gaming world to further evil ends and I think I have a good angle on how to do it.

Now the question is going to simply be...is it worth it or is it as many are saying here...simply a waste of time and effort?

I won't use my Simeron login in...I will start with a brand new login...new clean slate...start fresh from scratch.

I have a few players willing to do this with me (I think)....

We'll see what happens once I get some DM feedback on it being worth me investing the time and effort to be a faction leader...I've done it before other places...so I am under no illusion about the headaches this is going to be.

I would like to have 10-15 active evil players that can and will be able to follow the tenants of the faction because, frankly, if they can't they are going to send it down in flames. There is just way, way, way to many "good" factions out there at this point.

I mean seriously..what "goodly" place is still in ruins?

I know Wyrmhold, Banite temple and the the Keep are all still rubble....however, I know Tarkuul has been given a little bump too...so I have hope.

I have seen the evil factions pretty much gutted though...so I dunno.

I will tell you right now...this is not going to be a "let's PvP our tails off because we are evil" faction...there will be PvP mind you...but in very controlled, more then likely DM oversight, ways...

So...if you want to make an evil character, kick me a PM here and we'll work on things depending on the answer, if any, I get from the DM team.

I really would like to have at least one or two DMs kinda be the faction "overwatchers" as I am new to the whole Faction Leader stuff here on Amia and I want to be perfect on this so that there is the best chance to be "fair" to all concerned. Good or Evil.

If the good folks can nail us...great.

But I want to be able to nail them too and leave them going HOLY CRAP.

Maybe I am being an idiot here...wouldn't be the first time and probably won't be the last. But I am willing to try.

Now its up to who is still willing to try with me, the DM staff and the community.

If there is not enough interest...on anyone's part, that is fine...I'm enjoying Krugan's RP good enough and there is plenty for him to do too...got a few alts I play also...but if there is enough interest, I will be putting all of that on the back burner (not abandoning it) to work this.

Now, the offer is out there...let's see what comes of it...

Peace out.

Simeron

You were arguing the validity of means because they were not logical to you as a person. You think that it doesn't make sense, therefore it can't happen. You're saying something else now, but I'll humor you.

Why do mass killings happen for seemingly no reason? Why did millions of hate crimes happen and continue happen. Why did the DC sniper teach his son how to kill people on a highway? Why Did the Norwegian guy kill tons of bystanders on an island. Why did the Virginia tech shooter randomly shoot up his school.

You can try to justify each one by responding, but by doing so, you will be proving my point. Yes, you can classify some of this shit as insanity, but is insanity really a reason to do something, or merely something you do because you're nuts? Kind of a stupid argument, tbh.

I differ to the forgotten realms, where there are many evil deities who pledge their followers to kill followers of another god without any political or otherwise discourse. As a follower of that god, you have the option to try and follow their dogma putting all of your personal morals aside.

If you want a historical example of religious zealotry, look up Galileo Galilei. Read why heresy was more important than facts and science.

There's always more than one reason to do something, following a dark god that wishes a certain not so nice deed is one reason, reasons for following the dark god usually includes the reasoning why to do the evil deed.

And just like in real life, people make decisions based on more than one reason too, even simple actions:

Ex: I go buy a pizza from the store...

a] because I'm hungry.
b] I feel like eating pizza.
c] I like the taste.
d] it is quick and inexpensive.

It's silly to think someone legitimately: I WORSHIP CYRIC SO LET ME KILL EVERYONE IN SIGHT, and that is the end of it. A character older than three months alone will develop more drive and reasons behind his or her actions on their own based on rp experience.

sorry needled, your fighting a dead battle and those here agree with me that there is more to action than just the action. if you cant read between the lines than it appears that all thats left is shallow appearances for you. trust me, there is a very deep world in psychology, one that you would be happy to study as it sounds like something your interested in but maybe dont know enough about.

I think what the Needler is trying to say is that there are some out there who don't actually need a reason, and there are some out there who do things just for the sake of doing them without any concern for others or repercussion.

There are some characters who can do evil things because 'there is no reason NOT to' rather than a reason to do it. For example a Lolthite Drow, given the opportunity is going to destroy the Eilistreaen Drow shrine because there is no reason not to, and worshiping Lolth is THE reason to have.

...But the arguement is kind of pointless because even then there are a number of reasons for taking on that mentality. This is pretty circular and pointless!

you can explain it, its called opening up a textbook on the subject, flipping through it a few times and learning about it. fair enough to say that not every detail of the human mind is cataloged and there are plenty of variations from the norm, but those are just that. variations. mostly every character you see in game can fit one or more descriptors of personality.

im not saying this to discount your ideas on how you should play ,mind, im just saying how it works in real life. every action has thought behind it. even senseless hate crimes and killings have reason behind them however inane. thats how police track criminals, with motive and psychological profiling. nearly everyone fits a nice neat package of how we behave.

sociopaths may be antisocial killers at times but they still have beliefs that drove them to action. no one wakes up one day and decides to kill a whole bunch of people. even if they believe in some dark god that is telling them to do it, there is still the psychological 'paper trail' of thought processes. nothing and i mean nothing is random. things that appear random only appear so because the perpetrator is making them to be so to throw the pursuers off his trail. any good detective knows that there is always a trail to follow. if you cant trace back the action to the basic thoughts than there is a broken pattern and the action doesnt make sense for the characters MO.

example: my goblin maggot (for ease of familiarity on my part) loves to be not nice. he likes to squish paladin heads and eat what comes out. why does he do this? because hes a goblin? because he worships maglubiyet? no. the reason he does these things is due to a long and intricate need to feel fulfillment in his actions and appease a higher power. there is a mixture of fear and resentment and self loathing.

and for the record monstrous races that are inherently evil such as goblins should not be rp'ed without an evil bias due to a difference in their brain patterns. some people are born with the predisposition to evil doing but in humans we call it disorders. now, that in itself is not enough to justify the actions but it plays a part just like everything else.

the sum of the action is made up of all the different parts, reasons to why things are done. only the most most most basic instincts are done without thinking, such as eating and sleeping. anything else can be evaluated at length and if your character doesnt have anything to evaluate more than a few lines of text than its shallow and ill thought out.

"There are some characters who can do evil things because 'there is no reason NOT to' rather than a reason to do it. For example a Lolthite Drow, given the opportunity is going to destroy the Eilistreaen Drow shrine because there is no reason not to, and worshiping Lolth is THE reason to have."

these characters still have reason. a lothlite has a life time of fear and dogmatic oppression drilled into her mind. destroying her perceived enemies is second nature to her only because of her environment, and because drow are monstrous by nature (part of their curse i believe but dont quote me). the individual has reasons to issue the attack, be it lust for power, greed, and of course the biggest in this scenario i think, fear. drow are intricate social creatures, they wouldn't just DO something if it wasn't at the precise calculated time that it would best benefit them. its dangerous to think that they would just randomly attack someone if they hadn't thought long and hard about it. that is what makes them LE instead of CE. see, the actions have justification in the alignment but that isnt the end all be all.

Morality (from the Latin moralitas "manner, character, proper behavior") is the differentiation among intentions, decisions, and actions between those that are good (or right) and bad (or wrong). A moral code is a system of morality (for example, according to a particular philosophy, religion, culture, etc.) and a moral is any one practice or teaching within a moral code. The adjective moral is synonymous with "good" or "right." Immorality is the active opposition to morality (i.e. good or right), while amorality is variously defined as an unawareness of, indifference toward, or disbelief in any set of moral standards or principles

Do you think human beings are inherently good or simply brainwashed from the beginning to follow the moral code in existence? What if you don't believe in the same morals? Are you still able to be judged by someone who does?

Mind you, morals vary from region to region, and in forgotten realms from deity to deity.

this is a good question and it shows that now your thinking about the actual problem. to me, humans are inherently evil but thats an opinion. the common problem is no one can agree. philosophers and psychologists alike can never get to the root of human nature. are humans evil? are humans products of society? what is evil what is good what is life? hard questions. luckily this is a game and i take my ideas of good/evil from the sourcebooks. what the BoVD tells me are evil acts i attribute to evil.

as for personal morals and judgement. some say that we can only be judged by god. some say we should adhere to laws agreed upon by our government. some dont agree on either. this is what makes everyone unique, we all have different views.

When she was asked why she did it, she said "I don't like Mondays." quoting a song. That's because she was a sociopath, and some people actually can be born that way.

probably but i also said that there are variations. only variations, it is not the norm and cannot be treated as so.

I'm not understanding your point here, effectively it only appears like you are trying to tell people how to rp because you do not like it or understand the reasons of what someone decides to do with their own character?

no, im mearly saying that characters should have depth to them. if they dont then what can i do other than try and voice my opinion? i know many players with in depth characters and its a fun mystery trying to unravel the story behind them. if you just want to have a pvp bot or rp that doesnt go past
"nice day"
"yes it sure is, thank you"
than who am i to disagree?
im not trying to force any one to rp any way. im mearly discussing the matter at hand

Everyone who has played their character for longer than six months believes their character is deep.

Unfortunate and true.

So after all that, you recant your entire argument and essentially just dissent to "that RP concept sucks because I don't see how it could work."

Bob "because I'm MEAN, and poisoning people is MEAN, and I want to prove I'm more MEAN then the other MEAN people."

Change the answer Bob....

Bob, "Because I want to make all living things sick, especially the guards, so that the defense is weakened and there is a health crisis. This will hopefully cause the do gooders to send aid including some of their own people and guards. Then, when they are busy with this mission of mercy, we are going to take the undead horde we created from all the dead monsters we killed over the last RL month and send them smashing into the weakened defenses of Kohl with orders to kill, burn and destroy everything which attacking the Grove with diseased animals all to cover up the real attack on the Dale where once we burn the place to the ground we intend to take several tons of salt and grind it into the fertile farmland and then run back to whatever hole we came out of. Now, how can we make all this happen? We got the undead, the salt, the mercury and the infected plants that have blight in them? What is the time table to get this puppy in motion...let's sit down and discuss this with the DMs that would need to be involved."

THen, when you are told its too far reaching, impossible or what have you...either limit your scope, change your plans or ask the DMs what IS within reach and possible.

Then roll with that.

An adviser or support character is just as important to an evil faction as anything else. You need someone to generate supplies, bounce ideas off of and what not.

A general rule of thumb I think is you need 3 support for every 1 field operative more or less.

If you feel like discussing things, kick me a PM and we can chat...sadly I know RL time is a killer.

Being a good Puppetmaster is always nice in this matters...look at the Emperor from Star Wars...

I am now thoroughly convinced that the atmosphere of evil on the server has changed, and the older evils are having difficulties adapting to it.

You'd never be able to pull the violent, evil world dominator in today's day in age (RL), and instead you would have to do so through subtlety and getting powerful people in your pocket.

This is... interesting to watch play out?

Bella Rose and Needled247 I think you might be better suited for a arena server if you want to just gank people for ganking sake or WoW you could shank lowbies in Ashenvale... or any FPS game.

because the second PVP rule is
"2. All PvP must have a role-playing reason. PvP without a sensible reason is not allowed. Your character's alignment is not a valid reason for PvP. Summons, such as undead, are a valid reason but do not excuse you from the below protocol."

and thats the main reason you keep bring up, and that overruled by the rules so, thank you please try again.

Arena servers aren't worth it, and the only server in which you could really make someone cry by smashin' their face in has been gone for a while now. :(

What the hell does this have to do with PvP?

Did you even read the thread? This is about character development, morals, and why characters act how they act. As far as I'm concerned the PvP in NWN is such shit I don't even factor it in anyways.

I guess you weren't trolling . . . *facepalm*

Yes, it has changed. People stopped playing the first one.
That's the only change.

It's all good and dandy being evil and nobody knowing about it. But whats the point if you're not doing anything except acting good? Maybe once in a blue moon you will do an evil deed or manipulate someone to do something bad. But that isn't generating much conflict RP at all, now is it? There needs to be an evil with a face. People constantly go on about how they want evil to be secretive and smart, but i've yet to see any RP Generated through such a method.

To which this addresses, and then you finally see why this thread had a discussion..

your kind were stating you cant win, DMs ignore you and you can never do anything.

I was pointing out that maybe if you tryed something more indepth then....."I R EVIL I WANT TO SMASH CUZ I IZ EVIL". you might get abit more love because if its in the rules they dont like stuff without a sensible reason and the claim of your character's alignment is not a valid reason alone, maybe they view thier DM time in the same regard unless its a slow day.

Rofl. If you think that's all evil does while they roleplay then I don't have any hope of reaching you. That and your ignorant comments about how you would never play evil because you dont want to "destroy" Amia. And you wonder why this thread exists.

Not sure I am understanding this right, but drow in general are at CE end of spectrum.
