I did that and unfortunately the evil players I managed to rope in didn't really step up to the challenge, that and, they were up against a rather genius egomaniac who was determined to be a hero!

This whole argument is rife with hostility. To be honest I'm going to interject with my own point of view and say that since its already fucking happened that yelling and complaining about it is going to go nowhere fast. Just my two cents.

Doesn't mean there won't always be more PCs willing to try :)

I apologize for bothering you enough with my comments that you felt the need to litter this topic with these personal problems, Needled.

Easy folks, this topic is kinda steering off on a tangent but as long as the topic creator is ok with it. On this newly created topic I'd say I've definitely seen very interesting and simply great evil rp from various people on the server during my dmtime (banites included, you were great in the events I've had with you) and in addition one of my two pcs is an evil dude.

As for all those things going back I don't really know much about them, many of them were before my time and not something I was directly involved in though do know that the dm team always take care to ensure nobody gets unfairly treated and its something we discuss in great lengths.

People roleplay for fun, not for the sake of it. Look at the fucking server. NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY EVIL ANYMORE. Why? Well, most people don't enjoy getting shit on with no payoff, I hear. They will continue to get shit on unless there is a change in how Amia is ran. It says something when the majority of DM interaction with evil people is them trying to fuck them over. After the fifth metagaming accusation it started to become funny.

This deviates from the point I was trying to get across. The DMs can't change how we [The players] can play our characters. I can't really say too much about DM interaction with them, because I've had 2 evil characters 1 being a drow and another being an assassin/ hired killer who haven't really gotten anywhere (mostly because I've been working on other characters). In any real story, good usually wins over evil. The bad guy winning happens but is rare.

The point I'm trying to get across is, there is no real conflict. Nobody is a bandit who robs the roads, nobody is a murderer, etc.
The payoff for being this would be good RP. I remember being a drow and attacking an elf on the roads. I lost that fight and the elf dragged my body to bendir. Did I get anything out of it? No not really but it generated good RP and a bit of excitement and I honestly had good fun with the aftermath of OMG a drow just attacked me.
There are only a few people I've seen do this kinda things who I give props to because it makes things more interesting. Again, not saying there is no evil here, just saying there isn't much real conflict between good forces and evil forces whether it be faction based or not.

Well, yes, that's my point of view as well, but as a DM my job is to resolve problems and issues, even if they're 3 or 4 or 200 years old and been brought up twice, two dozen, or 35,000 times.

Quote:
I visited a locksmith. Actually involved rogues in the RP to lock the place under Cordor. After the RP was done and largely approved by a DM, 2 months later, it wasn't in the module, and random people stormed into our new hideout and took everyone prisoner in Cordor for 3 days.

O, yes, that. There are cirucumstances you aren't/weren't aware of regarding Cordor at large in that incident. Your base was locked for that RP: It didn't matter, it was overcome like PCs overcome many challenges.

Mago's ban had nothing to do with Ron. Let's leave it at that, ok? As usual I dislike talking about bans in public simply because I can't post everything. Even with your permission. It's DM forum stuff and I can't post that in public.

Your last comment is inflammatory second hand jabs again like a lot of Lucky's post. If you're trying to give positive discourse, I'm not sure the point of that remark or why you'd make it: It certainly doesn't help relations at all, or make you look good. Nor am I really sure what the anecdote has to do with going to Lally regarding problems on the server, you just cite a situation where she showed up. Doesn't have much to do with going to her to help solve a problem?

Quote:
You were indecisive as a team to get involved in any of those requests until it became time to blow our place up.

I wouldn't say indecisive. It looks like that to you because you couldn't see the 5 page topic where we were at each other's throats over things. For you it looks like a passive indecision, for us it was a very heated argument over a lot of variables. Guess there's not a lot of differnece but I hope it helps for you to know in some small wya that you weren't ignored. Yossarin and myself were the two biggest proponents for bumping the topic DMside and getting SOMETHING done.

Quote:
If you don't mind some helpful advice to get a more active evil presence? As a DM and admin I've found that evil PCs thrive very well with the carrot on a stick method. Write up some fairly powerful NPCs for Zanshibon, Shadowscape and Tarkuul. Have them recruit evil PCs as minions, give them concrete goals and tasks, that are both reasonably doable and require discretion and subtlety.

We got those already. By and large in my experience: Evil PCs don't tend to want to work for NPCs, they normally want to work for themselves. Kind of the perk of the evil shtick, you get to be your own boss and smush anyone who tries to control you.

I've once had illusions of grandeur of a tiefling rising in power through all odds, overcoming adversity while being consistently punished for escalating acts of banditry, murder, and eventually cult activities-- Grand set on the highly unlikely goal of gathering a following that is not based around harassing paladins and halflings, but overthrowing Paush and gaining a piece of power in the abyssal layers.

Might still try some day, if i see a big gap and/or opportunity in the world for such a thing.

Edit for Clarification: Evil characters can fight OTHER evil characters and institutions for a lot of dynamic RP, since evil characters are likely to have the sort of power you'd want to control yourself. I have an epic Fighter/BG/KC of Orcus who runs around slapping the blackguard competition of lesser deities.

No, they were not the 'same thing'.

Quote:
got quite a bit of support

If by support you mean the occasional "Hi I'm an npc and you guys need to make Ballistas, but any attempt at making Ballistas is to be denied, then 'sure'...support, right.

Quote:
we as DMs came down on them a lot (we came down on both sides) for PVP issues

By that, you mean banning players for ic actions instead of possessing some npc's to handle the issue ic on one occasion, ignoring a few complaints of rule breaking because "you are playing an evil character and you were in the area where pvp was expected." Sure. Yes, that did happen, which then caused me to complain about rule breaking less and simply ignore it.

Although I will say I was grateful to the DM team for handling an instance where I was getting harassed oocly because a player was trying to get me to do or say something pissy and get myself in trouble. The problem was handled very swiftly and appropriately. Thank you.

Quote:
but that's pretty standard far for a large scale plotline that involves PCs on both sides. PvP issues are the standard, not the exception. So despite the frustrations I had at the time

It is true that any plot where one faction or group of pc's is set against another faction or group of pc's usually will result in hostility on any server. That happens. But what pissed me off the most is the plot that lasted for eight months was simply dropped: "Thank you for playing, you may go now."

It was literally a waste of time. I understand DM'ing takes work, it is not always enjoyable, and IRL happens or interest is lost. I've DM'd myself on multiple other servers over the span of five years. I know how it is. But why waste everyone's time and even your own if you have no intent on finishing a plot, or actually generating rp from it? Isn't the point and pleasure of DM'ing being the ability to make things happen and watch what PC's will do, very much like a movie and then keeping the ball rolling as long as possible to see the later effects?

If it's not fun, then don't even start the plot, because you are just going to end up frustrating everyone involved and the server as a whole, anyway...the end result being that players are happier when you don't get involved or DM.

Quote:
But to say they "got shit" seems.. .well, untrue. Shadow and Mahtan were basically at your beck and call for the entire length of the Caraigh plot, and after that...

Do not circle jerk or lead players around in circles just because you have no ideas or desire of what to do next. If you don't want to run something then don't run something. The experience is much better off that way than attempting or even doing things to make changes and it goes ignored.
It seemed like the DM's involved felt 'obligated' or forced, long after they lost interest. If the interest is gone, or irl is too busy, wrap it up and move on.
It is perfectly acceptable, but much like what was said already.

Quote:
I'm not sure what you mean by "Got shit on" in such a case. The Slavers did get kicked out of Underport once, but it's not uncommon for people to get kicked out of Underport if they're causing groups of people to come wreck the joint.

By "getting shit on", it is meant that we were banned from every town--even if nothing occurred in said town.
So we were openly in essentially 'public' or 'open' areas, because that was where we were able to rp in: outskirts, pass of despair, forest of despair, etc...but because of this there was much pvp to be had, (most of which, speaking strictly for myself here and not the others, I had more people initiate pvp with me than me looking for it with them, but the slaver group as a whole 'collected' the most amount of slaves because we were being attacked while attempting to -leave- an area and avoid a fight and others did not want us to leave)

So we had no choice but to rp in various rental houses, and be incredibly difficult to find. That is what we got out of the rp, sure, rp consequence, and I've always been perfectly okay with that...

What I"m not okay with is because you ('you' being the one I quoted) delivered the consequences, knowing the results as much as I, and instead it amounts to 'we are bad rp'rs because all we do is pvp and/or hide' and you are annoyed by that 'shit', when those were the only options handed to us by you--and all other attempts to create more options were essentially roadblocked.

Why complain or smear someone for doing what you are wanting them to do, and then not give any other option if it so bothers you?

That's a good way to define 'being shit on'.

Quote:
Illithid do get testy after all.

In regards to this, sometimes there is a medium between the obligation of creating genuine npc reactions for the sake of pc environment while still figuring out a medium that the environment is still fun for players. Yes, sometimes players think 'differently' or 'abstract' where common sense is not common. But that doesn't mean it's the players are lost and therefore it is okay to snub them--why bother dm'ing in the first place if that is what it is about?

This is not a campaign where you are dealing with six or so players and they can watch the world change if they miss a detail. This is a persistent world where if a scenario you invented for pcs fall short, or they go left and you say right; they will never get the opportunity to fix their mistake, much less see the results of their actions and therefore receive no secondary nudge to go in the correct direction.

Quote:
As for the Cultists: Well, to my knowledge, Caraigh is still filled with extra undead, and Ceyren's Mill is still pretty down and out, with the exception of like one lone PC working on things. They also caused Castle Blackmoor to be whooshed off by Orcus' Avatar. I'd say that's all a pretty decent lasting effect.

'They' didn't cause anything. They were circle jerked around and then attacked by their own npcs that gave instructions. Sure "Orcus is chaotic, welcome to it" does fly as far as an ic explanation with no further rp, and no explanation or fairness, but just because someone plays a chaotic character does not mean it is alright to dismiss that you are still dealing with real people and players behind the character.

--all in all it is quite easy to say "I did everything I could, the problem must be YOU", because your reception of plots that you have spent time and energy in, was not as you expected. But maybe it's better to talk instead of yell when things blow up, or remember that at this point the majority of nwn players are adults instead of children these days, and perhaps there is a reason why players are upset beyond a temper tantrum.

Maybe if you don't feel like running a plot or something is not fun, talk to some of the players to get some ideas of how to fix this, and explain your own feelings on it so there is a better understanding. Maybe if you just ran a plot and everyone is pissed off, talk to them to find out why...and sometimes as a DM, there is occasionally the instance where a situation has concluded and people are upset...even if it does seem like they are 'whining' or in the rare case sometimes there IS indeed a group that is whining because something did not occur the way they wanted...(anyone who has run table top campaigns has experience with that case) but if the majority of players are pissed for whatever reason even if it is not agreed or understood, changes still need to be made. Otherwise you might as well quit because you have successfully turned it into an "us vs them" and pitched camps.

Lastly, maybe if two groups of players are having issues and not getting along, or having some false assumptions with each other and it has gotten too out of hand ic, then mediate between the faction leaders so they can be more sensitive to each other for a more enjoyable experience instead of just treating people like shit because it is not working the way you expected.

Since we can't just metagame the NPCs, i believe that's where your effort and planning is shown and proven to the DM Team, which may be why there's a lot of apparent hostility in the thread regarding the banites.

If you want to raid Tarkuul and somehow infect the living city with some magical/alchemical something-or-other, start small, get people involved, and the DMs are the final and best people to have in on your plot.

Whoooa whoa, i'm answering the problems of my own topic. I love you guys.

I think somewhere this has gone waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy off topic!

As to creating a character with a long term possibly impossible goal.... my Shadovar Bard hopes to eventually be able to shapechange to a shadow dragon, she started with no cohorts.... no companions, she met one, then another, only one is aware of her goal. She hints of what she wishes to become... dreams of the power.... is she PvPing anyone.... no! Is she actively subverting and manipulating... You bet! Is much of her initial RP slow and somewhat lonely.... yes... will it stay that way.. hard to tell.... is her goal impossible? Time and RP will tell.

-This- is how RP on Amia works... just like real life... you aren't -normally- born with everything all set up for your enjoyment... you have to explore and find those things. Flip hamburgers at McDonald's for 4 years while you study to become a rocket scientist... nothing in RP, or the world happens over night.... just doesn't. -You- have to make things happen if you want them to.

the biggest and longest running rp scenario that still to this day has consequences after about 3 years was only achieved after several months of rp planning and then about half an hour of actual carrying out. in that short time my character made connections with dozens of other characters and advanced a number of personal plot lines. the point being, in order to do anything in the world YOU have to be PROACTIVE and actually go do something. but, the flip side of that coin is that you also have to spend the required time rp-ing it out so that it doesnt pass over as another random act of tom-foolery. Get it?

I agree entirely, though it was more to make a point. It's very rare I ever see DMs actively playing as the NPCs that populate the world, but granted I'm not often in the "evil zones" because...there's no one ever in the "evil zones", creating one of those viscous circles. I remember we had a long conversation about finding any Sharran NPCs, Tormak that didn't yield much fruit. I know you handle Tarkuul, but the "Living City" doesn't seem to do much. There's never any NPC activity on the forums, or IG as far as I can tell. I'm all for finding out stuff IG, don't get me wrong, but the DMs are always so busy with mundane stuff that you can never just walk up to an NPC and start chatting.

I should clarify that it's more like finding an NPC you want to approach and then getting in touch with a DM. Not just willy-nilly going 'Hey! Give me a NPC hookup!', heh.

But, yeah, I don't see much NPC-possession either but I figure it's understandable with everything else the Team has to do.

In fact, there's a few things I'm going to PM the Team about later tonight in regards to some of the things I want my characters to do.

i dont know about that guys, almost every time i log in i see the dms doing something fun. and what is this talk about "evil zones" or "areas"? i dont get where thats coming from. sure, kohl could be seen as IC only for good aligned people but arent you all forgetting about the grey zone? the unsure parts of rp where you are neither good nor evil?

seriously, characters are not defined by the tiny line of text that says "chaotic/lawful blah blah blah". too many people are acting like alignment is the end of rp, the last stop on a characters thought process. it isnt! alignment should barely ever play a part in the daily life of a character. evil people still go to the store. evil people still have friends and go to fancy dinners with them. whatever! you arent evil because you enslaved 'moar' people than X group. your true colors show through your smaller actions like personal choice and the words you use. you can be a neutral or even a good aligned person and still get caught up in a bad situation, that doesnt make one evil. just the same for good.

my character is full blown non repentant, monstrous minded evil evil bad guy not nice fella... but sometimes that doesnt instantly show. sometimes he isnt in the mood to flay the living. sometimes he just wants to get some mythals, or a new spell, or just talk to someone. not everything has to be drastic.

i guess what im trying to say it that if everyone was less focused on how evil or good or whatever they can be and be more intertwined with eachothers rp, we could generate a lot more rp! dont snub each other just because your characters might appear to be enemies from some after school movie, instead, play with one another and develop more intricate hatred and story driven rp.

ask yourself, how often do you have to refer to what alignment your character is to make a decision. if you find that alignment is the basis for more decisions than say, personal goals or personality or environmental variables then it probably means that your character needs more depth. alignment is just a tiny tiny itty bitty little part of who your character should be.

I respectfully disagree. My character makes decisions and roleplays her alignment and god to the best of her ability at all times. Every interaction is a reflection of her persona. What got her to where she is. That's why she is the alignment she is.

"chaotic evil"
"diety- bane"

Okay done! ive rolled up my toon!

as a disclaimer im not personally singling out anyone, just in general this is how i feel in relation to this discussion.

Considering that it's highly unlikely that any Banite is going to be chaotic evil, I don't see how that example even makes sense.

Also, when I roll a character, the first thing I think about is background, then god, then I can draw alignment and decision making processes based upon those variables. They're all connected, for whatever reason specific to your character.

Also, when I roll a character, the first thing I think about is background, then god, then I can draw alignment and decision making processes based upon those variables. They're all connected, for whatever reason specific to your character.

to be honest i had no idea what alignment bane even supports so your little clarification just comes off as snobbish.

not to mention, you dont have to be directly the same alignment as your diety. that right there is what i mean. A+B=/= a character. its more than just alignment and diety. a banite could be good aligned (though not a cleric) if the circumstances are right. a good hearted person could be born into a bad family or whatever. i think its just becomes too black and white for most people and that leads to stale rp.

Remember that a lot of god's dogmas can be interpreted, and mis-interpreted as long as you're not breaking core tenets, pending mostly on the god and actions present.

The gods are pretty greedy for followers, as i've heard stated around here many times. Are you playing an "evil character", or are you playing YOUR character who happens to be evil?

My evil character doesn't go to the bathroom or read a book in any specifically evil way, her every action is not and shouldn't be a constant drive to do ______ or the representation thereof.

Yes. That's why -your- alignment as a player CAN be -different- than the alignment of the deity.

Also, mundane tasks and bodily functions hardly equate to being specific of one alignment or the next. You simply -need- to do them, in order to survive. The difference could be that you harm other people in the process versus doing it all by yourself because you need to. I don't need to go in detail, I'm sure.

I can think of a lot of ways to read or deficate in an evil way, but i think it's a rather poor and childish way to go about living. To each their own, i suppose. Is this all going to elaborate further into a large discussion on the philosophical of "What is Evil?", complete with quotes from the southpark movie?

I'd really it rather not go down a river too deep to talk in without drowing folk.

That doesn't even have to be the discussion matter. For example, if you want to read a book and you don't have it, do you go to the library and borrow it? Or do you go to the library, kill everyone, then take all of the books.

That's your example, mind you.

see so the DMs do listen to everyone and do thier job, so the 2 pages of the people bitching about nothing is a load, as proved by your post here..

they dont care if your evil,good,fat,ugly....super shortbus.. because by your logic of the DMs hating on random people for ________ (insert reason here) they would have dismissed it.

if people dont like playing something dont play it... and did you ever think maybe stuff gets put on the back burning because its pointless and nothing was to be gained.

Bob "DM I mined up 1000 units of Mercury, I want to dump it in the water supply of Cordor,Dale, Uhm,Wharftown...ect and give them all Mercury poisoning"
DM "why do you want to poison them, and what will you get out of it"
Bob "because I'm MEAN, and poisoning people is MEAN, and I want to prove I'm more MEAN then the other MEAN people."

like maybe if it was something more in depth like, you were destorying farmland and live stock so the town or maybe the island at large, would have a famine and look who happens to have a stockpile of food they might be willing to sell for a inflated price.
something where you have a clear reason to want to do it because you have something to gain.

I think it's moderately .. troubling that you seem to think that evil people need a reason to act evil. Why is that the case? Why can't people be evil? Have you people ever heard of rwandan, darfur, etc, genocide, the french revolution (guillotine), the middle east invasion in the holy wars. (cite 1,2,3) the unspeakable tragedies during world war 2. Stalin.

These are REAL LIFE examples where god ISN'T EVIL in any of major religions.

Now, imagine if the gods that we worshipped were actually evil and think about the stuff people would come up with. It's wicked, yes, why is that wrong though? That's part of the story.

Just like the sith murder just about any idiot who delays them in the slightest. They murder their masters. It's as if you all play Jedi and don't know why the Empire exists.

yes but there is one thing your missing. those people arent acting evil just because they feel like it. they are acting in a way in which they thought would benefit themselves or their agendas the most. yes, that in itself is an evil act, but the motive behind a crime is just as important as the crime itself. hitler didnt have all those people killed just because he wanted to. no, he executed them for a plethora of reasons. he wasnt just trying to out evil his friend stalin.

I don't think you understand. Some people just want to watch the world burn. The joker, for example, can be closely related to the mind of Cyricist.

Some people think that any people who get in their way should perish.

Some people have an obsession for obtaining power. Do you need more examples?

Yes, sometimes they're themed. Sometimes not. But people can act crazy and do whatever they want. Just because you don't understand someone who's bipolar doesn't mean they aren't allowed to be crazy.

look at how the japs attacked the US, then the US nuked thier ass. they were fine sitting back till someone pissed them off.

you notice how noone attack the living city.... because they dont want to piss it off for no reason, and from what I can tell IC, it does not want to piss anyone off so you leave it alone, it will leave you alone.

also you have to think, everyone has said the server is like 95% goodly.... so its safe to assume the NPCs that are not monsters... would be the same, so its logical for evil to have a very limited pool to draw from.
so in the case of banites... its not like you are taking all evil... your only taking banites so thats a percent of a percent.

but the living city.... evil cleric or spell caster...take a seat in the library, palemaster make yourself at home, card carrying undead, Welcome home brother.
they have pooled everyone into one location so the place is protected.

I'm not going to bash anyone's roleplay, especially that I haven't seen, but, as a player who is no longer involved actively in any evil faction I can certainly say "faced" evil and conflicts between players like LifeSpeech described is nearly non-existent.

First off, as stated above I do not think defeat itself is an RP-ending result, and I don't think that letting evil win will fix the problems of the server. They need to be given a chance, though. When plot requests are ignored time and time again without any communication DM-to-player side, plots that players genuinely think are neat and put some thought into, they will feel snubbed and they will feel frustrated. When the people in charge flat out shut something down, why not talk and at least try to work with the players instead?

So why the lack of communication? Why does it feel like trying to work with DMs on Amia is a series of hurdles to jump instead of a fun, enjoyable experience like I've had elsewhere? Is it a lack of DM staff, or is it because of restrictions imposed for whatever reasons on the staff itself? I honestly think it is the latter. There are a lot of creative people DM-side and yet most things seem to be so rigidly railroaded that it feels as though the creativity has been sucked right out of the server. You would probably know the answers to those questions, though.

With such a heavy importance on DM supervision its no wonder that people get upset when their attempts to contribute to the plot of the server are ignored.

DM-player conversation is suicide. We've always suffered cries of favoritism for talking to some players without talking to every player equally, and it has recently been shown that even the DM Team will turn on itself and make baseless accusations of favoritism if a DM happens to enjoy conversing with a player. That's why I don't fraternize with players and keep some extremely strict and often railroading guidelines to follow for myself. Therefore, I ignore a ton of stuff unless it is absolutely relevant, because no proper defense can be mounted against a claim of favoritism. It is Amia's red scare.

Servants of evil gods, such as Banites or Malarites, should always have some form of reason for doing blatantly evil activities-- You are not granted powers through your various gods to be... well, God who walks amongst mere mortals. You are their servants, and are to push their mortal agendas. Whatever flavor you choose to do this is up to you, of course.

I didn't realise that it was common to use a dark god as an excuse to do bad things, rather than your reasoning.

Tbh with a hundred players running around(not necessarily at the same time) there will be those who work for things and will receive attention in a way that others who have just started to work for things have not so it will look like favoritism when it really isn't..I'll admit it did to me but then I actually did think about it and think quite the opposite, now.

Yeah, erm.. not much NPC possession?

Interesting but... I have to disagree.

Yes, I admit i'm probably one of those keeners that strives to do things and thus tries to get time with NPCs (even if at times I'm shy about it). Yossi's got a lot on his plate and he does work fairly for what it's worth coming from me, having been one who worked in Cordor a fair chunk as two PCs (Bryce and Christophan specifically).

A good bit of advice:

There's a song that sums up a good attitude to take when it comes to dealing with DMs, and I'll quote a bit of the most valuable lyric portion:

"You can't always get what you want.... but sometimes, you just might find.. you get what you need."

With the understanding things are not going to always go the way you expect, or even entirely want them , you can still strive to do quite a bit.

With Warrick and his bit of influence on Cordor's path , he didn't get to from the get go do what he did. He had to work his way in , and jump on an oppritunity which was shown to him by random happenings in Cordor.

Paying attention and being willing to jump on openings that show up can be a great boon. Admittedly, it doesn't always work out exactly how you want (Yeah, Warrick had no plans of dying incidentally), but .. if you find the openings offered and you try to play as the DMs advice which is pretty simple.. you can do quite a good bit with them.

Thank you for the feedback. I can't really explain lack of communication except to admit it exists and that it's something we need to fix going forward. I'm not sure I can answer your questions. Generally the requests we get from evil players are things like... "i want to take over this entire city by force" or oher large, grand scale things. These take a lot of time to deliberate and one tiny wrench in the works RP or otherwise can cause it to all tumble down. From your persepctive it looks like a wastte. From ours, where we see it all, it's all we can do to explain things to yo without revealing wat actions caused a change or etc, because we can't metagame the actions of others to you to exlain why something didn't work.

The essence of DnD in the end is DM supervision. We require it to affect the world because without a DM to play the world, how can you say you affected it? I mean that in a broad sense, mind, simple day to day RP and PC to PC plans affect the world, of course they do. But I hope you get what I mean when I say that.

Well it's true! It's just my day-to-day observation, though, and not meant to be a crack on the DMs or anything.

Though, I think, I've seen you do it most often (from what I remember, and that's just Cordor stuff so I figure that was you).
