I'm looking for some opinions on 'good' languages to take for one of my (rapidly becoming main) characters. He's an assassin born in Calimport. Common and the Calimshan dialect are obvious choices, but I'm looking for 4 more. If I assume that he'd know languages that allow him to negotiate the highest amount of contracts, Undercommon &/or Drow are good options. Any suggestions for the other 2 or 3?

Calishite people speak Alzhedo. Elven would be a good choice, since it is a trade city, and he'd probably learn it to get in good with elven merchants, since many Calishite traders will learn Common to make a better connection with traders from outside the area and take advantage of that fact. Auran is also a good idea, since Alzhedo is actually a sort of 'descendant' language of Auran, and if your character is planarly-inclined, Auran would be the one he had most access to, due to the djinni occupation within Calimshan.

I would suggest knowing only a couple. Even if your INT score lets you know more, you have room to learn them in game.

I agree with derk, also consider knowing the elven language only partially and probably with a strong accent. It takes decades to study the fine details of elven language and most humans either don't have the patience or skill to master it, also their lifespan is too short.

If you have a total of 4...figure it this way...

Native tongue (common but Calmishite it looks like to me.)
Racial if you are not a human.

I could see a selection of the following:

Elven, Dwarven and Halfling for trades.

Drow if you are of the darker nature.

Mulan based on the trades.

Just my 2 copper thumbs.

Alzhedo is the common tongue, but because it's a trade city, nearly every single language there is to know is known by someone in the area. That said, the more common languages known besides Alzhedo are: Auran, Chondathan, Chultan, Draconic, Ignan, Shaaran, and Tashalan.

Gnoll, learn Gnoll, you will find a very small but amazing demographic in which that language appeals to.

This is like a powerbuild thread for languages.

"What languages should my I choose for my PC to give him/her the best advantage OOCly?"

Learn the languages your character would want to, or need to. No more no less.

Overwhelmingly this.

I don't know how I missed this thread before.

Just a quick note, in terms of the Drow/Undercommon part. If choosing to go with one of those I highly recommend undercommon over the Drow language.
Logically it makes far more sense for a character (that isn't some scholar needing to know obscure languages) to learn a trade language over a dedicated racial language.

As undercommon would basically allow the ability to comunicated with almost any of the UD races it is a far wiser and more fitting choice for a merc type.

Also this seems a perfectly fine question to ask if the character would ICly ask it himself and try to find the the most beneficial languages to learn for his trade (and this seems like such a case).

I still say that my idea's the best one.

Hell, my 28 base int wizard knows Common, Elven, Sylvan, and Draconic (though her pronunciation is atrocious). Why is there a need for more languages to start the game with? If she needs to learn, say, dwarven, it's a great opportunity for roleplay if she were to seek out a dwarf to teach her.

Draconic, elven, Drow and Infernal.

That way you'll understand every common language of adventuring characters on Amia without any difficulties.

(sarcasm intended if you didn't get it)

Everyone should also learn to speak Train.

I was asking for opinions...that's all. This is like trolling the build thread telling people to 'take the classes your character would want to, or need to. No more no less.' Not everyone is looking for every possible advantage, all the time. Lock this down, please; the productive posts I've seen jive with the choices I was considering anyway. Thank you, folks

This is a thread asking for metagamed info actually. Regardless every character gets a base language/free language based on several things.

Ultimately those telling you to 'Do what your character would do.' are not in the wrong. Or figure out what the character would have done/known, its all about depth building. It should be obvious from where they are from and their history, what languages they would know.. even if it is illsuited to Amia. They are simply suggesting you expand on your character's story/knowledge from an IC way. Just because something does not parrot your point of view does not make it an 'unproductive' opinion. Unless you view productive as telling you what exactly you want to hear.

No, it really isn't. Its an OOC thread created for the purpose of finding out what languages exist and would make sense for the character so that languages that actually suit the character can be chosen.

He is doing what the character would do in that he asking, "Hmmm, now if I want to get as much business as possible what languages do I need to speak to do that?".

If the characters knowledge would span into things that you the player are not aware of then it is most certainly not metagaming to ask for information to deal with that.

The more common tongues spoken in Calimport have been stated already. Nothing more is needed.

Locking, as per the OP.
