Why would your companion become legendary when your character is obviously not.

Yeah, no. Those are too strong. You want one, you request it.

I'm still against making any animal companions anything non-animal. There are plenty of animals to play with. Use a snake, a stag, a polar bear, etc. But for the love of god, please no non-animals...

Sorry, white wolf, not the frostbreath breathing kind. But that'd probably be a DC reskin anyway.

I have to say I do like the concept of a "construct"....its very RP too...mages should be able to have 'golems' or something like that.

I'm not saying make it where they can get the uber ones...but I kinda like the idea of not having to take Mummy Dust and still have a construct. Maybe not as good as the one with Mummy Dust or something...but still...

Something like with the normal summon you get a flesh to iron golem....but with mummy dust you get into the Mithril and Adamantite golems....something along those lines.

Rp making one, use the DC's from that rp to reskin your mummy dust summon.

Its a thought but what about the casters that don't go 21 caster levels?

I mean, one thing I was thinking was 20 wizard 10 PM for a necromancer that has a Bone Golem as his summons.

I dunno...its doable either way I suppose....

Casters without 21 Caster levels can reskin something else, or they can just not make a golemn. Probably takes a bit of magical skill to make such a powerful and combat ready golemn anyway.

I would think so...in the example I am thinking, they are powerful..I mean they get level 9 spells...and they have "maxed" out their Pale Master.

I was thinking you could reskin your familiar for your construct. Maybe a smaller version of the bone golem.

But again, unless you take a caster level...how are you going to change your familiar?

There's a rule in the request forum. It says "The new skin must make sense, be somewhat close to the original in size, power and properties"

I think it's fairly logical, really, in this case. Golems all have construction requirements laid out in the monster manual. The caster level needed varies by their power. Some of them are fairly weak - I believe Clay is at the bottom of the pile, a level 10Wizard/20something might be able to have his best summon (Which will be something crap) reskinned to that without too much fuss. But...if he wants a Mithral Golem? No. You're going to need a lot more casting power. And if you've got that, you can summon something nice, with Mummy Dust, or Gate, or whatever. Which would be a nice fit.

If you're limiting yourself as a caster by multiclassing, you're limiting the power of your summons, and by extension, the golem you can create. I know its technically not really a summon, its a creation, but its a logical counterpart, as a display of your caster level.

I'm not sure about the particulars of a Bone Golem, where it fits on the sliding scale of golem awesomeness. Its not in my pdfs or on the SRD. Flesh Golem is there, though. A level 20 Wizard could easily make one of those. And theyre cooler, anyway. No IG monsters look like them, and theyve got that whole Frankenstein's monster thing going on. Which is nice.

PS. You dont need to take a level to have a summon reskin. Thats not how it works. The DM creates a creature that looks as you specify, and stores it on this little gizmo. Then when you summon your familiar, it (after a split second) copies what it reads off said gizmo and changes appearance/bio/portrait. You would only need to mess around with relevelling if your underlying summon was wrong. Eg, you had a Pseudodragon (for some reason.....), but the Undead one has more appropiate properties for your reskin. You'd probably have to change it. Dont know if that would be free.

20 Wizard 10 PM would probably reskin their undead summon to Bone Golem.

For me there were two options when I was processing the two new familiars.

One was the Undead Familiar the other was the Construct. I chose undead because simply put: Undead is used more often in RP than Construct and I want to avail the Palemasters and Wizards with necro focus of a familiar that made sense and had undead immunities and vulnerabilities.

You can reskin an Undead to a Construct and it still works since the templates are fairly similar.

Okay...that is great.

But my original question was this...

Let's say my character is level 30. Here is how I progressed...

Level 1-20 General Mage
Level 21-30 Palemaster

No Epic Spells because I never went to 21 Wizard as I wanted the crit immunity and "final" level of PM.

I now sit at 30..can not level up and to change my familiar I need to take a Wizard level.

So...do I need to delevel 11 levels and relevel those 11 levels in order to change my familiar?

Or do I just need to delevel 1 level of PM to do it?

Or do I need to do the 11 levels via a DC request?

Won't be for me..and thank you Sune for them...

Now the only issue will be which one to choose...lol.

One quick question...did the P Dragons get nerfed on the True Seeing?

You're not allowed to de/re-level Palemasters anyway. I think you will need to totally remake the character. Same goes with Dragon Disciple, so dont feel to bad. :D

There's a problem with this line of thinking. Familiars are supposed to be squishy. Mages and sorcerers are not pet classes like druids and rangers are. They're way too powerful and their spell lists are far too useful. The familiar is an RP prop, an agent, a triviality, and in combat, a liability. Not a capable combatant. If anything, you're supposed to want to keep your familiar as far from combat as possible because "very bad things" happen to YOU when it dies. Unfortunately NWN has trivialized that to the point people use them to trip traps and other unRPish nonsense. Mages and sorcerers definitely don't need more power, nor do they need 'free backup tanks' imo.

If any change to familiars is made, it should that their deaths should be very painful to the owner.

P Three wrote:
I have to say, the idea of unbuffed familiars makes me cringe. Unless that's being changed rather than dropped entirely.

One of the things I've always liked best about Amia (because I generally suck at combat) is that the familiars are actually /useful/. When I'm lvl 3, I have a familiar that can actually help me level, rather than taking a hit and poofing.

Pick the right familiar. Low level familiars are borderline overpowered if you chose the right ones. Both Fire and Ice Mephits regen and have a pretty hefty DR for low level, almost never dying. At high level, some familiars are far too powerful to be called anything close to a familiar, the beholder is an example of this.

I'm fine with familiars having 'roles' and uses, so long as none of those roles replace another party member like the default pixie making a rogue in the party pointless and none of those roles whatsover resembles 'tank.'

Mostly due to their knockdown bolts, yeah.

By the way, palemasters are fine to delevel! It's just RDD because of their ability changes.

All right. Just try playin' on Amia solo with low level mage without familiar and with 15 mins CD on rest...

Wouldn't really be doable IMO. The buffed familiars and summons are necessary to spread out your spells over the 15 minute wait. I'm sure someone will chime in with a contrary response, but this goes for the averagely skilled player that doesn't know the server geography very well, like myself.

Any idea when the undead familiar is done and working? I just chose it with my lvl 25 sorcerer and noticed that its still level 1. Thought it would be working since I saw the groovy new phase spider receiving levels with my lowbie wizard.

You might want to double check. I tried it out myself on the Amia mod offline a moment ago and it gave me the right skeleton familiar level.

Since the Palemasters have gotten some love with necro spells, I was wondering if the undead familiar would gain levels with PM as well? Seems logical that they would become stronger with PM levels as the PM focuses on undead, necromancy and all that. They probably don't now, but is it feasible you think? (Kudos for the PM changes btw. Cool stuff.)

Since Mummy Dust isn't necromancy but an epic spell, it shouldn't be affected by PM levels.

I don't think this is actually doable thanks to how familairs are hardcoded, but I don't know for sure.

IMHO if you have PM levels and take EMD I should think about giving them something different from the standard with an exception that won't let the Alt summon scrolls drop.

Then what about Divine Casters with Epic Necro Focus? Considering the most common are Divine, and the most powerful use a combination of Divine and Arcane.

Also, PM's already get their own Winterwight summon.

(Note, i do not have EMD with my Divine Necro's so this does not benefit me, it's just logic.)

While the issue of familiars and balance is being reviewed, it would be nice if familiars had alignment checks of some sort... >: Or strict OOC ruling much like certain items found in game or the deity idols.

Normally, familiars have to be an animal of some sort to be converted into a magical beast in the process of becoming a familiar, so alignment isn't much of an issue since all animals start out as True Neutral, but in NWN, we have a whole assortment alignment associated with many of the familiars and it really doesn't make sense what a lot of people have as their familiars based on their alignment.

An eyeball familiar is not going to cooperate with a sorcerer paladin, and neither is pseudodragon going to aid a mass murderer. Hell hounds aren't going to be following Chaotic Good elves around and it would be equally absurd for a character claiming to be good aligned to have a skeleton familiar.

I'd say that commnon sense will rule it all out. Particular being good and having an undead familiar. You'll get a nice lil visit by the Kelemvorite Church. And get killed by Druids, paladins, etc.

The most common necromancers are divine/clerics? Nah, not on Amia.

I fail to see any logic. Because PMs got WW, it means what exactly? You seem to imply that PMs shouldn't have more alternatives, because they have one unique summon. Clerics have their own unique undead summon as well you know. Seems like you forgot..

Ulir. You just made me facepalm so hard.

Lorewise, Necro-clerics are far more common than other types.

What i basically said that, if PM's get more alternatives, then why shouldn't Necro-based clerics?

On Amia ALL familiars have DR and Regen. A Fire mephit will get taken out fast in the sewers by the cold damage wielding Water Elementals and zombies. The ice mephit is immune to them but gets taken out by the fire dealing spell casters of flame strike in the FoD. The "beholder" is not a "beholder" but a floating eye, a very weak version of a beholder. And at low levels, its a joke. It tries to zap things with the few rays it has, normally watching them fail, and then gets a pathetic bite attack.

At high levels, the summons that a mage gets far outwiegh the familiar. An example is the slaads versus a familiar of your choice...and those are MID LEVEL summons.

Familiars certainly can't 'tank' anywhere near as good as a player. They don't get all that fancy equipment, they don't get those nice feats like Dev Crit, and they certainly don't replace a rogue worth his salt. A pixie? really?

yeah, if you want to open locks and disarm traps...but let's see the pixie doing sneak attacks...or scouting for the party.

Hell, one of the best damage dealing familiars is the panther and it gets taken out quickly because the BEST AC it can have is like in the 20-30 range. So me a level 20 PC that is still in the 20-30 range and I will show you someone not wearing their best stuff.

My mage, who is 14, has a 25 AC unbuffed with a 16 dex and with very small buffs, gets over 30. The best familiars can get maybe 33...nothing compared to the summons.

I tried the skeelton last night and its okay, but it certainly is NO tank. Not like a PC. I will drop any of my familiars for a PC any day of the week ending in Y.

I'd say that commnon sense will rule it all out. Particular being good and having an undead familiar. You'll get a nice lil visit by the Kelemvorite Church. And get killed by Druids, paladins, etc.

Common sense, in the case of familiars, have not worked at all. I can take a screenshot, if you'd like, of good characters running around with Eyeballs for the knockdown, or the horde of notorious murderers running around with a pseudodragon on the island for the blindsense ability they have.

Dragons have a very clear cut view on morality unlike mortals. They are not wishy washy about the lines between good and evil, and this is true even in cases of neutral dragons as they are resolute in their neutrality. While aberrations are not necessary evil, eyeballs are most definitely evil creatures. Yet I see them being summoned right by the Dale gates and no one seems to think it's a problem.

People getting killed in PvP for having the wrong familiar is not a solution. A good character can't possibly be good and have an undead familiar at the same time, just like a psueodragon won't aid causes of evil. Beholders have known to work with Red Wizards and such but they simply wouldn't serve and further a cause of good.

It's not that having a drastically different alignment creature is the problem in terms of how they are received by others. The problem lies in the fact these creatures would simply not work with people that are so off their alignment that it's equally absurd as a druid running around with a palemaster to go leveling.

Ulir. You just made me facepalm so hard.

Lorewise, Necro-clerics are far more common than other types.

What i basically said that, if PM's get more alternatives, then why shouldn't Necro-based clerics?

Because Palemaster is the prestige class and cleric is not.
