Perhaps it's time to again remind folk that the tedious *Tears down poster* is actually rather contra productive, And somewhat 'Gay' in lack of a better word.

It's just bad forum conduct, In my opinion, because it doesn't add anything. The author just need to write two lines to null the action. And before you know it -its spiraling out of control.

So. Umm... yeah.

It's only tedious if it's repetitive posts back and forth. Saying it's torn down and continues to be torn down (when posted by someone with authority) is legit and any response saying they are put back up is the OP making themselves look stupid. If it's 'torn down repeatedly' by someone without the authority to do so (say in the wilderness areas) then the OP states they are just put back up, any post after that is pointless. However if one person just says they are torn down, then they are put back up, it's not a big deal.

It's all in how far the posters take it, lol.

I want to make a character who runs the Amian Kinkos, so we have an explanation as to how all of these posters get put up and replaced so quickly.

Also, how the hell does anyone notice when people notice their posters and reply/tear down/mutter incoherently/think loudly near their posts in multiple locations?

So it's gotta be a combination of some kind of printing press shoppe, and mystical effects that make it so that when people approach one notice board they can see what's going on at the other ones via illusionary magic...

I detest this kind of forum Roleplay. When somebody writes what your PC says or THINKS near a poster. And more then often it is something blatantly Insulting towards the other PC.

Which is fine; Mind you, If the other PC had a chance to REPLY to said insult.

On a serious note, the DM team can handle this when its inappropriate as Glim did in the most recent case. I do agree in principal with Naiv that authority figures in civilized areas, whether PC run or DM controlled should have greater leeway. I'm biased of course. :D

I will tear down and continue to dear down posts anywhere my character has legal authority and reason to do so, and if the person continues to post after being told not to, I'll bring it up to the staff. That said, I don't generally do the repetitive teardowns outside places my character would have the authority to do that, though they do occasionally take down one of the notices for various reasons, usually filing along with a report of some kind to whatever faction that character works for.

Additionally, if someone leaves a point of contact in a post, but someone posts that point of contact is blocked or locked, please actually RP trying to get ahold of the person by meeting them IG or the like rather than just post "A message is sent" and then the OP responds via messages of their own, if your contact point is locked, the correspondence through that point is done unless the OP changes the contact point.

Here's an idea. Start your movement in game rather than lazy IC posters on the forums. Problem solved.

Given the numerous amount of "invisible" noticeboards across Amia, it is rather difficult to take any meaningful IC action against posters, since I know of very, very few people who actually visit certain areas just to emote posting a notice on a board.

Man, if only there were some way that people could post their messages IG so they were a real and tangible thing with definite locations to be attended at. Some kind of painting that painter could produce, or a transportable sign that a carpenter could make, and some kind of way to scribe the message onto some manner of placeable or drop-able object...

If only there was some kind of system of jobs that we could be provided with to do these things for ourselves or ask others with relevant ability to do so for us.

At least in Kohlingen, Southern Cordor and the like there are proper boards, actually.

Yeah most of the cities now have a placeable describing it as a notice board and telling you to check the forums to find the information on them.

Post subject:  Re: Tear down; Put up. - The infinity game.

By 'invisible noticeboards', I had been referring to those posters that are temporarily stuck up in random locations; such as on trees, on walls, painted on cows, stapled on the back of a road-warden or wherever people creatively put them. Those in particular are where we see most of this 'infinity game'.

I dislike forum roleplay in general, so I'm in support of the general notion of creating in-game alternatives for public notices.

That's not necessary, Derk.

Anyway, this topic has been here before, and I'll impart some wisdom that was said by someone in the last one. There is really no need, since you've already posted it on the forum, and no one can make you edit your post to remove the message from being "out there." You've accomplished your mission, so there is no need to go and continue to post putting them back up, unless you're bumping your own topic.

Are you joking me? Forum RP is what i love about this server. I can write long dwindling posts and colour them as i want, put up some pictures and what not.
You can't do that in-game.

I can read people's personal RP in the PC story forum and watch characters evolve and rise! Or crumble and fall...

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. From his perspective I doubt he is 'joking' you, nor do I believe that Forum RP is shit. Personally I find it uninteresting, and for multiple unnamed reasons, I do not read or pay attention to most of it. There are only certain necessary things I keep track of.

Post subject:  Re: Tear down; Put up. - The infinity game.

To clarify my position:

There are two kinds of forum RP. One is fine. One is not.

Story posts (backstory, off screen stuff that lets out some of the character's personality that is sometimes difficult to portray in game, off island story stuff) are all fine. They're good for fleshing out characters.

Auction notices, warning signs, posterboard preaching, etc are all shit (this is my -opinion-, if that isn't clear). They do not enrich the character's personality. They do not engage other players. They do not tell a story. They do not foster various forms of relationships between characters. In short, the only purpose that they serve is to control the roleplay how you like it. Want to put up a sign in the forest? Make a sign in game. Want to make sure that people don't tear it down? Stand there and defend it (or hire someone to do it). Want to sell the massive amounts of loot you found? Use one of the awesome market stalls that we were provided with in game.

The whole point of using the forum notice board is to reach other people outside your time zone. Not everyone has the ability to log in every reset to put up their transportable signs or paintings - or have the time it takes to get those scribed with all that information. If I have limited time to play, I shouldn't be told I'm doing it wrong simply because I want to reach as many people as possible and don't want to kill myself with the tedious job of scribing a long message on a PLC, especially when I'm being driven by my desire to foster more RP in-game.

That's my take on the notice forum and all such postings. I've used them a lot.

You don't need to be a scribe to grab a piece of paper and write on it. Scribe is much more in depth than that, so unless we are going to say you cannot make a poster unless you take that job them that's not feasible. For signs, obviously, and paintings.

Bolded some of the relevant-to-me and also important parts. This is why, and it's been said before, that forum posts are necessary. You cut those out and you alienate the 'non peak' players.

For some people, being "lazy" means that they actually have work or something else to do, and are contributing what they actually can rather than just mysteriously not being around. It's also about sharing roleplay that might involve your character(s) with more people than you might be able to find ingame when you're playing.

Oh I missed this gem.

As someone that cannot get IG at the drop of a hat and that has limited game-playing availability I am offended that you are calling me lazy because I am unable rather than too lazy to get IG. Opinions are one thing, but what you said is blatant dickery.

I am disappoint. And that's all I'll say on that thought thread.

Next time I'll quote, because my response was primarily in reply to:

I am not saying that forum RP or notice posts are bad. I think you'll find my actions, use of it, and previous posts on the matter speak quite to the contrary. I was and am saying that there is a way we have available to use to be more sane about the 'infinity game'. If it's a matter of silencing or un-silencing a post that is going back and forth, there then are ways to work with that. You can pop IG when you have time and get a sign made, and put it up where your character is posting. And then it is there, being seen. And then when the person who is vehemently tearing down postings finds it, they can literally demolish it. Or not. Maybe it turns out they didn't even know where the posting was in the first place. I certainly don't canvas every square inch of the module every time I log a character on. I'm sure, if not for being able to read posts on the forum, I would never even see the majority of IC posts because I simply don't pass by the noticeboards in game all that often, with a few exceptions like Kampo's or Cordor, where it's right next to the spawn-in point.

Basically, it's just another way to deal with it, which doesn't have to be used exclusively - in can, in fact be used in addition to, and help provide a location as to where these things are actually posted when it's "on the road on X map".

I think you may be reading Derks post wrong. To me it looks like he's not calling anyone lazy, but saying that there is an incentive to be lazy - eg some people could think "why bother to log in and go to an extra effort of in-game rp when i can just type up an easy post and hey presto - result. I sold my epic sling with minimal effort" etc. That's what I read from it anyway. If you choose to read it as a personal attack and take offense, that's your right I suppose.

No, that's how I read it as well. But to say it gives the incentive to do so is akin to stating that people that take said incentive are lazy. It's really not separate.

I didn't take it as a personal attack, I was just illustrating a point. Personally I don't care what anyone thinks about me RPing on the forums :3

Except it is separate.

What do you perceive as better for the Amia community, Naivatkal?

A) More players in game, roleplaying and interacting.
B) "Puts up posters" "Tears down posters" forum posts.

Alternatively:

A) More players in game, roleplaying and interacting, congregating in a market area to sell their wares.
B) Bosshunting solo and pausing for 5 seconds to make an auction post before going back to bosshunting solo.

My point is: The wrong activities are being incentivized.

I don't care one whit about time zone issues. I play late at night (Eastern US time) when all the North Americans are in bed, when all the Europeans are in bed or at work, and before all the Australians hop on. I rarely see more than 20 people online these days.

So what if you can't maximize your target audience by doing things in game? I'd wager that 20 minutes spent roleplaying with 2-4 people in game is more rewarding than typing a post about putting a poster up and getting 20 responses that half the time involve someone walking up and thinking about the poster while offering no form of interaction.

The problem isn't exactly forum RP alone. It's when it is not used as simply a supplement to in game RP that is the problem. Crow's post about warning people away from the Shekat Valley due to spider attacks is a good example. That supplements in game events. It's not used in place of in game events.
