What creatures are typically classed as 'Monstrous'?

Monstrous humanoids, such as gnolls, minotaurs, Rosie O'Donnell, etc.

Yeah, what Gers said. To clarify: "Monstrous Humanoid" is a mechanically defined creature type, like "Outsider" or "Giant" or "Dragon." Officially, they're "similar to humanoids, but with monstrous or animalistic features. They often have magical abilities as well."

If you're a ranger in Amia, I would suggest that you took some other race as favored enemy.

Better place for this.

Not at all. This is boring mechanics and has nothing to do with lore. I'm moving it back.

Tormak is being bluntly objective, as befits a DM. =3

That's not the best way to judge. Amia has custom built and custom skinned creatures of all types. That's only useful when looking at single player.

Indeed you have, and it's very nice. But since I own one of very few level 30 pure rangers in Amia, I made that statement out of experience. Favored enemies become really useful from level 21 when you can take the bane of enemies feat. For that reason, if you want to make a powerful ranger, you got to see what you hunt in epic levels, and monstrous enemies are not that many compared to other races. I'm deliberately vague to not drop any spoilers here. I'm not saying that monstrous is a completely useless choice, I just say that there are other epic monster races and PvP hungry players with different races out there that might deserve the choice of "favored enemies" better.

Or maybe you could pick what your ranger would hunt and hate instead of building purely for mechanics.

Furthermore, you get to pick plenty of favored enemies to accomodate some mechanical efficency without sacrificing your character concept. It's not an either-or choice. You will get by more than fine even if you start with some really strange and gimmicky Favored Enemies your concept involves.

I wouldn't advice any ranger to be to take: beasts, construct, dragon, fey or shapechanger either, 'cause you can't have all races as favored enemies and those that are least useful must go, if you want to make a self sustained ranger. All of these races have some use but none are something I would classify as a good choice. Then, you can of course play a ranger in whatever way you want and don't think about favored enemies or anything that make rangers special, just like you can have a wizard with intelligence 8 or a fighter specialized in using fists to fight with. It's just different ways of playing NWN.

Thank you for telling people what to do to get a mechanical benefit in your eyes. I'm locking this since the answer was given to prevent further silly comments.
