so i'm assuming the animal companion is a panther, and do i use katana + shortsword, katana + katana, or katana + something else?

It's usually best to focus on a single weapon, because most weapon feats are specific to one weapon type.

DUAL KATANAS!!!!

oh, and what should i do for stats

In my opinion:

End with Strength 26 (you need 25 for devcrit).

Start with Wisdom 14 to be able to cast all Ranger spells. (You could get away with Wisdom 13 if you had an amazing plan for that attribute point, since Blade Thirst and Greater Magic Fang are the most important ranger spells and are level 3.)

Use the rest however you like. (As an exotic weapon user you may not have enough feats to get Improved Knockdown, otherwise I would recommend Intelligence 14 as well.)

KnightOfKelemvor:

It would make sense to change Cleric 25 / Fighter 2 / Monk into Cleric 26 / Fighter 2 / Monk 1, especially since your feat selection already uses the level 26 cleric bonus feat for Great WIS.

Well, since my internet's being crappy and I can't play I'll just post this - and here's to hoping it goes through.

I want to make a shifter, methinks. What are general build ideas for a shifter? As far as I've always understood, a shifter tends to do best build-wise when it gears its feats and such towards amplifying one or two specific shifted forms (such as Dragon, Risen Lord, etc). Shifter being the only class I've never in all my years of NWN messed with much, I sortof need some help and instruction on this.

I love the concept. Just seems like a whole nother world of rules and things to remember about what gear does and doesn't merge and what that means, etc.

Halp?

bog standard shifter build should be like, 8 10 10 with 8 on either dex or strength... and 18 wis 14 int 12 cha...

to get dragonshape you need to take great wisdom 5 times and buff wisdom from level 1 to 30. this will get you 30 wis pretty much -at- level 30...you can get all but dragon if you decide to go a slightly less wisdom buffing route and pick the feats at the right time.

also you need 5 druid to even begin shifting, and the alertness feat. and if you hit shifter 10 before epic levels you can't carry on, and this would land you a 5 druid/10 shifter/5 more druid, at the least.

considering that, like pigeon said sometimes people go CoT for the bonus feats at this point.

10 druid / 20 shifter is as pure shifter as you can get, but other variations are more AB/fun/have more wide skillsets. which is why i'm trying to make a more firepower druid semi shifter build at the moment.

I have read monk is a good cross class aswell, 5 druid 20 shifter 5 monk? shame about amia is you don't get monk AC added to your shifts, but similar to if you take at least 9 druid, you can have disease immunity, like a druids poision immunity.

shifters themselves are pretty melee oriented aswell, you could shift around some stats, grab yourself cleave, not grab metamagics, it depends imho on the RP not your ganking dreams.

most important tip, buff wisdom, every time, until it hits 30, if you want dragonshape. also I really do suggest test this one, and read <-- sidebar cause there is alot of new additions to the class.

um, also the reason you don't really need to buff str dex con...is cause they change once you shift. but, if you need it to be 13 for a feat then do it, just don't drop wisdom from 18...

--

ed: 16/13/1 didn't work either *face monitor* I guess I -have- to have a max of 7th level druid spells to get dragonshape aswell...hate bioware so much...

ed2: I gave up with the utterly day draining attempt at a middlish druid semi shifter, and am going with 9/1/20 druid wizard shifter, for some reason 12/1/17 didn't work even though 13/17 did before...so I give up, i'm going mainly shifter, to hell with druids I'll wait for my pure build. I still have no idea why some get 8 feats and some get 5...in epic levels...even if you go full out shifter in epic you need the bonus feats at the right levels to get enough wisdom...

Thanks! :D

So, to end with 26 strength, would i have to start it at 18? Also, how much Dexterity should i have?

And, what feats, besides the dev crit ones, wep focus and spec (katana), and kd and imp kd would be important? (if i can even take anymore after all that)

Okay I have racked my brain but I have come short. I beseet ze builders to assist me with an elven epic dodging, dex based, paladin.

That may or may not use divine might/shield for added wonderment. + Spells? Maybe? Am I asking for too much. I am perhaps open to the idea of subraces.

It is possible to start lower, but that would mean you have to purchase Great Strength more times in epic.

Quote:
Also, how much Dexterity should i have?

I recommend 8. (You'll probably want to have +2 DEX on your gear. Having DEX 10 before casting Cat's Grace lets you be sure of maximizing your AC with full plate. Another option is spamming potions until you roll +4 or better -- you have a 50% chance of getting that each time -- if you don't mind doing that.)

Taking Blindfight is essential. If you don't have enough feats to take both IKD and Blindfight, I'd take Blindfight instead.

Its possible... You are going to need 13 rogue, 10 sd, 9 monk 5 sd.....

Any of those...
Could go
16 paladin 13 rogue 1 Ranger
20 Paladin 10 sd
18 paladin 10 sd 1 ranger (1 subrace)
16 paladin 9 monk 5 sd
14 paladin 10 monk 6 sd

There are other combinations that give paladin just as a flavor class, my recomendation is to not do it. Consider maybe using CoT or Cleric instead.
My opinion is dont do it.

Pally16/Rogue13/Ranger1 or Pally15/Monk9/SD6 or Pally20/SD10. The latter two are the sneakiest versions, but the build is so gimped already that sneaking is actually not your main weapon.

They work just fine. Pigeon's a woman.

I had the 16/13/1 version. On a Gnome. Damn near indestructible, had Divine feats too, and could sneak just fine against the saps who hadn't invested in detection skills, but I just wished the buffs lasted longer and I had more spellslots. I'd consider the 20/10 or variant thereof for better magics (IE, more Divine Favour), but you might miss the skillpoints of the Rogue heavy.

Which Elven gods would support Paladins of such skullduggery, btw? Its an important consideration!

Hey everyone.. My first time posting please go easy on me. =) I had a quick build question.. actually two if you don't mind =)
My first. How would you make a pure casting druid? Is it possible and how would you? I kind of want to try it for fun purposes =)

My second. I have a level 22 "pure" Sorc I plan on keeping her pure.. I have always played Sorc and love them. "on single player I'm new to multiplayer" What are the most crucial spells to have? I chose the feats. Spell penetration and greater. and spell focus/greater focus Evocation.
Empowered spell, and maximize. and mummy dust. at lvl 21. I started with 18 cha, now 23. with items its 34. I was hoping someone could give me a little guidance maybe save me from doing anything more dumb =) Thanks guys your wonderful! :D

I am looking to create a Swashbuckler/Thespian type character. I want high skills for RP purposes, I want him to use the traditional Italian Duelist style, "Rapier and Dagger", or "Rapier and Buckler", and I would like him to have a relatively generic, stereotypical, textbook quality of swashbuckler to him. He will either be Human or Halfling. He will utilise a crossbow, if parry wasn't broken, he'd put skills into that - but I may want to utilize the taunt skill.

I just want to brandy a textbook Swashbuckler! And IMMEDIATELY! *Eyes the screen in wait*

Depends what you want with the caster. It's important to plan out your focuses early on. You're not a wizard, so you can't choose schools (which I totally do!), but I would suggest... For spells - Hellball or GR definitely, simply because they are both devastating. Hellball moreso. I am assuming, with the better spells to use, you want to know about what has High DCs against PvP and PvM. So I will discuss school focuses.

Evocation (Bigby's and what's-it's-name-spell), Necromancy (Wilting, and that other one), Enchantment (Domination and Charms, plus that groovy thingy with the thing) and Abjuration (Banishment) are my favourites. Conjuration for the Mummy Dust and EDK, if you go that path. But you really only want to be EFS in two schools of magic, and potentially extending the third ONLY to GFS. Taking another epic in epic is simply stupid. You'd want to take, for your Sorc, greater charm, at least three times. You may want to utilise an Epic Fort feat, as that will save you from the dreaded Dev Crit.

Sounds like the classic Rogue17/WM7/Fighter6. Go Rogue8/WM7/Fighter5 pre-epic, don't bother taking the TWF feats. There's a dagger with TWF and Ambidexterity when you need to dualwield.

Have a go at it yourself and let us see the plans before actually making the character. We'll tell you how lousy you are.

Meh, I failed. From the beginning the character seems to be flawed with abilities. I tried to give him this:

12
18
12
8
12
10

But obviously you need more intelligence to gain expertise... So I gave up.

Drop dex to 17, or transfer points from str or con to int. In either case, you should be able to net epic dodge.

I hate you. CHA 10? Sure, if you want it so for RP reasons. Then just drop a point from STR or CON for INT. Uneven numbers may look ugly, but think it positively: it's effectively +3 save or +5 skill. Don't drop DEX.

So I gave it a go. Terrible. I cannot make builds that aren't casters. These were the feats I took - no doubt it's the reason why it failed miserably.

Pre-Epic
Weapon Focus: Rapier
Weapon Finesse
Weapon Specialization
Blind Fight
Dodge
Expertise
Spring Attack and Mobility
Whirlwind Attack
Improved Parry
Improved Critical

And I think that's all...

Epic:
Great Dexterity
Epic Weapon Focus
Epic Weapon Spec
Epic Skill Focus: Parry
Improved Evasion
Blinding Speed
Knockdown

I think that's it also.

A swartsbuckler isnt exactly a weapon master IMO, more a rogue with more fighter abilities than most other rogues :)
I would forget the WM and go 19rogue/11fighter (12/8) instead and take kd and imp. kd instead of Whirlwind and Spring Attack. All the extra skill points will come handy aswell...

Um, you won't hit a barn door even if you take the feats for throwing axe. Just keep it as a precaution if something's out of reach. Just go EWF Battleaxe and Armourskin.

To get Taunt? CHA 6, INT 12.

Why wouldnt I hit a barn door with the throwing axe? Would have same ab with any other weapon. Or do you mean I wouldnt hit it very hard?

The idea I had was a character that could melee and ranged with strength based. Have 1,000 hp or so while raging and being buffed. As much EDR as I could toss on. Be a barbarian. I was hoping if I focused primarily handaxe it would be unique. EDR + Terrifying sounded like a lot of fun ranged.

You'd need either DEX or WIS for it. All ranged weapons do. Do you have DEX or WIS? No.

point blank shot instead of improved power...imho its a useless feat unless your not being attacked (thus why in faq's people say power attack is for doors not combat... -10 ac is a fair peice.) as is expertise improved because you can't hit squat yourself...good for tanking but you -need- backup.

infact I take that back, wheres cleave? I was going to say overwhelming crit but the prerequisites don't fit.

Thanks! I wasnt aware of that. Was under impression it was strictly a str based throwing weapon. Appreciate it Op.

OK, I have an idea. Looking to make the 1st character I intend to play for a while; I've explored the server some, and Amia seems a good place to spend some time. I've been kicking around the idea of a Duergar hunter-type for quite a while now, and here's what I've come up with. Tear it apart, please

Duergar

S 18
D 15
C 10
W 10
I 12
Ch 4

1-9: Ranger (Dodge, Toughness, Mobility)
10-16: Dwarven Defender (WF - shortsword, Imp Crit - shortsword)
17-24: Shadowdancer (Blindfight, EWF - shortsword, Armor Skin)
25: Ranger (bonus feat: Epic Prowess)
26-28: Dwarven Defender (Epic Will?)
29-30: Shadowdancer (Uh...some other feat)

Skills would be max Hide, Spot or Listen (which is more productive?), 30 Tumble (der...), some UMD, Craft Armor and/or Weapon...not sure what else.

I'd take 1pt in Dex, all others to Str, so:

10 Rng / 10 DwD / 10 Shd

S 24
D 16
C 10
W 10
I 12
Ch 4

Am I too gimpy? Will the PvE and PvP world eat me alive? Discuss

imho...epic prowess, no, you have a focus. buff strength for overwhelming crit and maybe even dev...epic will, no, grab an +5 saves amulet later on for the same effect and more feat options, which will buff all your saves not just will. unless you desperatly need a different amulet.

also I know why pigeon is sadness =( I admire the choice of classes for its variety but your missing out on perfect health and a bunch of useful feats, and -all- dwarves should have some con bonus, the same way -all- nymphs should have ridicious charisma rolls.

um...you should also test weather you can fit luck of heros or something at level 1 instead of toughness, and get that later, +1 to saves and you can only get it once. or maybe even dirty fighting, i've never seen one person on amia with that feat yet xD. if you need help testing it let me know, its not too bad at first glance but to be honest the idea of a DD shadowdancer is confusing me.

Luck of Heroes I can do: just noticed I didn't spend my level 1 feat. I play on a different server that allows for crazy feat / skill choices based on level 1 feats, and I'm so used to NOT specifying that feat that I forgot it. As far as the remaining feats go, I would only be able to get PA, Cleave, and Great Cleave if I drop EP, Iron Will, and the 1 I didn't take, so OC / DC isn't an option without completelty re-working the build. I do like the idea...just not sure I can get there from here.

As to the '-all- dwarves should have some CON bonus' goes, I was looking for something that doesn't feed into any stereo-type while still remaining plausible. Everyone likes to be 'unique': I'm sure there are evil Aasimars, good Tieflings, and everything in between; why not a dwarf who's more nimble than hardy? I even have an RP justification: this character will be LN, and was tortured and exiled from his Underdark homeland. He never completely recovered from the damage done to him...so low Con (health issues) and Cha (scarring). His favored enemies will be Elves (who he was originally taught to hunt) and dwarves (insert torture scene).

Please, continue. I have a few days before I settle in and have never posted this build anywhere else, so I'm looking for all the 'holes'

I guess its the drinking thing mainly, even half dead dwarves can drink til their eyes fall out, compared to say a halfer who also has 0 bonus >_> thats all im sayin here, I know steriotypes make no sense most of the time, but, its a dwarf!.

I nearly forgot you need great cleave -_- um, mayhaps a bit of epic toughness for bonus hp.

also, I totally recommend rouge not ranger, unless you really really want the animal friend for rp, umd is more useful to sd's than level 2 druid style spells. as is sneak attack. and epic dodge...and etc.

ED: I nearly forgot my own question, can you weapon focus mage staffs and if so how???

ed2: lol google links to arelith on that question >_> they reckon no without a not easy modification.

Yeah...the more I think about this build, the more issues I see.

I do have a question, tho: how is it that some builds get the Ultimate-Eye-Roll-For-Being-Cheesy (F/Brd/PM, RDD splashes for stats, etc), yet virtually every build recommendation I see for non-casters ends at 25x/4F/1 Ro? Isn't that formula a great deal of mozzarella also? :D

Fighter / Bard / Palemaster doesn't get much eyerolling, nor does Fighter / Bard / RDD, as long as the levels of Bard are significant. The stereotypically frowned upon builds are (some were due to balance updates):

Sorc 28 / Pally 1 (or Blackguard) / Monk 1 (Or Rogue 1)
Bard/PM/RDD
Cleric/Monk combination of any kind
Druid/Monk or Druid/Shifter/Monk combination of any kind
Cleric/Bard/Palemaster
Cleric/Bard/RDD

.. and so on, but I feel lazy.

These builds are frowned upon because they forego reasonable RP and/or are often not roleplayed at all. They are used/abused for their power, and that is all. Also - most of them suck, in all reality.

I'm looking for a caster build. Having grown slightly tired of the melee figher, I'd prefer a non-spellsword build as well. I've looked at many of the base casting classes and have no idea where to go on any of them (Skills, Feats, Spells, Companions). I'm hoping to avoid a Druid and PM if possible.

Reading back on this, it is WAY too broad for this topic, so I'll attempt to narrow it down a bit more:
1. I would prefer a Wizard or Cleric.
2. Subrace can be any, though I would like this one to be a Gnome (Either Rock or Svirfneblin).
3. PvP is not as important as PvE (though I don't want to get demolished in the first hit  )

I know this is still a bit loose, but wiggle room is always nice :)

Svirfnerblin just screams dex cleric to me. Trickery for sure, if you read their lore. Its a must.

Hmm... A dex cleric seems to be more melee-oriented. Is that a correct assumption?

Svirfs gain +2 dex and +2 wis. If you go melee and focus on dex. You can have 6 str if you really wanted to and be fine. Thanks to divine power. You could go caster build and buff that natural wisdom bonus.

Since their rp is all about hiding you could do something with 20 wis and maxed dex. Or max wisdom.

Keep in mind that svirfs don t really have any set religion and little exposure to other races religions. Their clerics are not so powerful like other races who see clerics as the uberness. Svirf clerics are more or less there to do little ceremonies and final rites.

((Yes I was wantingto make a svirf recently))

Ok, so would a few SD levels be lore-appropriate? Maybe make a HIPS caster?

Very much so. Problem is if you go heavy caster you need more levels. And 6 sd takes away from that. Plus you have the issue of +2 ECL to overcome.

Would need to decide you want cleric as a main class and take it to epic, or do you want it as a minor class and use it only for spells. You could also forgo SD and make a fabulous corner sneaking cleric.

Something along the lines of 26 cleric 1 rogue 1 ranger. Focus in dex, pick up a handaxe or something nice like that for little midget gnomies. Could even do something like 21 cleric 6 monk 1 rogue. To take advantage of wearing cloth at sacrifice of cleric awesomess.

Possibilities are endless. Also you said wizard and they value wizards very much.

I'm leaning more toward a wizard build (since Clerics are more of a religious thing). Any recommendations that would work wonders for the lore of the Svirf?
