How is it that people get their plots going? I've been having trouble getting "big" RP going, as I'm not part of any faction or player groups that can help. How can a single character with an agenda start to get other people involved? The character whom I'm especially working on is more of a seedy type, and as such you can't very well go about broadcasting your plans to the public. Is it just me, or is it hard to get the ball rolling with sneaky-evilish-plots? Any suggestions or advice would be awesome!

Join a faction.

Factions have more in game resources available to them than individuals, and thus more opportunities to generate RP.

There are small groups of subtle sneaky people around, that aren't necessarily a faction. Naturally, staying true to themselves, they're subtle and difficult to place but do some snooping, maybe try to do some small-time stuff, and they could contact you. Pull you into the fold and what not.

Alternatively to joining a faction, you can always form one.

Alternatively, invoke conflict where conflict is of interest. This does not necessarily mean that your character be directly involved. It can be an attempt at misdirection, miscommunication or the insinuation that this faction did this for this selfish agenda.

Conflict of interest within factions is something that begins player interest. When you have player interest, you can then begin your marvelous schemes.

While some appreciate this, others really really don't. Though, I wouldn't say don't do this. I don't recommend it either.

Have to second it.

I don't mind conflict if it has a good enough reason, but conflict just cause you want conflict is really just bleargh to me.

Personally, I like a bit of ambiguity in my seedy types. Do some good things for the good people and some bad things for the bad people and never let your true allegiances and motives known. I have played a character like that for going on two years now and, while I never start anything "big" with Alanna, every little interaction further serves to shape who she is and what she really wants.

Well, considering this for a moment, a few IC issues come up. How does my character know the faction leader? How does my character even know about the faction itself? I feel these are valid questions when you are dealing with secretive factions. A good secretive faction should have no reputation or paper trail. I don't even know some factions on an OOC level.

If you are truly interested in joining a faction, then I'd wait around until a faction crosses paths with you through the course of your dealings. Yes it is a bit more tedious than simply asking to join OOC, but I think the RP is better that way. You'll have a legitimate reason for being in contact with the faction and thus more of an IC reason to join. Saves you from making excuses for your character's motivation later on as well.

I do however disagree that one must join a faction to get involved here on Amia, there are many other opportunities to become involved in serious role play, and our DM team plans out events both minor and major fairly consistently. If you stick around, RP will come to you one way or another.

The IC forums are a legitimate method of contacting people to avoid going OOC, too. Of course they have risks, such as being public, but it's worth a shot if played carefully.

As a few others have said, joining a faction makes being the evil-sneaky-underhanded type a bit easier, however, it is in no way the only way to get things going. The biggest adversity when trying to get the RP-ball rolling is time. This is true for the goody-good and the nasty-nasty characters. It takes time for your character to interact and network with other characters and get to the point that they can actually have a bit of an impact on events. My advice is simple... don't fret too much, just keep RP'ing your little heart out and opportunities will come your way.

You need a DM to do it. You also may need co-conspirators. You will never be able to do much alone. You don't need to join a small group, but its likely at the very least you'll need someone doing something for you.

The big time turner is a DM who is interested in making you apart of their event, perhaps even the central figure, or finding your plans interesting enough that they take up the mantle to help you push them foreward. This doesn't mean spam the DM with random idea's till they cave in or ban you. It means do something that catches the eye, request permission to do stuff, and you'll eventually catch the eye of one of our resident DM's, who may decide to help push your plans foreward for a bit.

My advice is simple: make a character concept and stick to it. I see a lot of cool characters around, but some of them are really lacking aims and ambition. While that is fine, because it does reflect reality, it will not get you into the RP you desire I suspect.

You see, I once had a monk of...i think it was the salamander. Basically it is a lawful evil order of kossuth, the fire deity, that seeks to renew the world by essentially burning it, basically burning books and lore. Myself and a few others wore bright orange robes and basically walked around like hare krishnas burning books and stuff. While we didnt stick to the characters, they got a lot of attention very quickly because they were both something different and because we had clear aims: burn lore, etc.

Befriend a group, any group, good or evil, by hunting regularly with them. Shared combat builds brotherhood. Then twist them to your nefarious ends. You need contacts to do evil, but they don't necessarily have to be evil contacts, willingly at least. For example, you could befriend a group, then tell them that someone has captured your love, and get them to help you rescue her. Meanwhile, your real purpose could be leaving some kind of horse's head in the bed message to a business rival.

I don't like the majority of responses on this topic, for one particular reason really.

They all adhere to your perspective of, 'Don't ruin other people's idea of RP by not treading on anyones toes.' Stuff that concept!

Have balls and stick to your concept. If your concept is to, as a seedy rogue type, create conflict (which it most definitely is), then you do it in your way. You don't need to befriend anybody, because I hate that word. Befriend. It suggests that you most compromise yourself in order to achieve anything in Amia. Play by the status quo that has already been established.

Wyjyn's example was really good.

It does tend to be easier to get things done if people don't hate your guts OOC, though, and seeding conflict for the sake of conflict tends to get you just that from the people who hold the attitude you don't like.

Yes, a good point.

But spreading conflict IC should not seep through to OOC. Even if it does, it will be quickly ammended with a few tells. Conflict IC (and executing the conflict you are aiming for correctly) shouldn't earn you minus points in the social ladder. If anything, it will boost it.

Bad publicity is better than none at all.

I agree with lathandier. Fantasy worlds run on conflict and conflict alone. (read: not huggles in stasis)

I am not sure what exactly you are trying to say there, Tormak. My assumption is that A. You either dislike me because you are TormakSaber, or B. Others dislike you because you are TormakSaber.

If A. is the case, which I highly doubt because everybody likes me, then I am cut deep. Real deep.

If B. is the case. No. Just no. Because even if heaps of people think you're a douche on the forums, it is safe to say that Torin Starfall is respected IC.

What I am saying is that fantasy worlds need conflict, and conflict arises interest (depending on what defines that conflict. I mean, it's safe to say that a breka up between two characters because of a love triangle is not of interest to the entirity of the server, but more specifically to those three involved.) amidst the players of Amia. Without conflict, you have no intention. Without an intention, there lacks purpose and development.

So, no. I do not think conflict will induce negative effects in the playerbase. Idiots do that.

I meant the publicity bit. I'd rather have no publicity than bad publicity. Bad publicity on the internet never goes away. Ever. No publicity means everyone's just this nebulous neutral to you. If you start conflict over and over and over just for the sake of it, sure, you might have some supporters, but don't be surprised when you get the bad publicity you expect, and don't be surprised when bad publicity starts affecting you adversely, is my point.

Also: Fantasy worlds run on conflict but behind the conflict is meaning. Conflict for conflict's sake just wears people thin. It's a big reason why most larger villains are LE, and the CE ones are flash in the pan.

Well of course have substance and purpose to your conflict!

I assumed that was a given considering we're all on a roleplay server.

Hahahahahaha.

Sorry, its that assuming common sense on the internet thing again that always makes me have a good laugh.

Funny how what you're pressing for in this topic as a suggestion is also what you do continually as you as well as your character, lathandier.

Not always appreciated.

Of course, by me reacting, you're probably rolling around on the floor with victorious glee trying not to wet yourself.

Alphawaves thinks I'm a troll.

Despite whether or not I attempt the craft on these here forums, I do not troll in Amia. Only ignorance would compel you to suggest such an abhorrent thing.

I see no intended malice in what lath's saying. I'm not even sure how it's possible to take seriously any sentence that includes the words "on/in the internet". I'm sure I'm not alone in saying this thread could do without personal jabs.

He's a self confessed troll, even though he's currently denying it to get a reaction.
His approach to trolling on the forum is precisely the thing he's trying to suggest others do in game. That was my point, and is entirely in-topic.

Agreed. Perhaps it is unclear with what I mean by conflict.

Even the most stupid of conflicts have a purpose, whether it is a miscommunication between two factions that begins a war, or whether it's idiotic propaganda for a Deity to make the presence of that Deity on Amia or in the fantasy world known.

Take soap opera's for example. Nobody likes them, except for an elite few, and the majority of the show's storyline is revolved around conflict after conflict. Is it redundant? Maybe. But pointless? No.

If I am to use Meldrium as an example, even if it may be ridiculed, he doesn't necessarily create conflict for the sake of creating conflict. He has a definite objective, that in his eyes, is completely justified and worth the time and effort, even if it jeorpadises his integrity from other peoples' perspective, or upsets some other person's social norm.

Ninja Alpha is Ninja: I do not agree with what Alpha just said, but what Logicality was saying.

And I am strictly NOT promoting trolling in game. If you believe so, take it up with me personally in a PM. Trolling in game can get you banned, and furthermore makes a joke out of our server that others have worked so hard to develop.

It's redundant, but that is purely because his objective has not been reached and he perseveres. Has it aroused attention? Yes. Has he offered RP, whether one OOCly thinks it is insubstantial? Yes.

The point is conflict creates interest. I do not mean conflict as in Hellball Amia Forest. Because that's just ridiculous.

My golden tips for not getting your arse rejected when it comes to RP plots:

1) Start off small so people can witness you role playing, but keep your head down. Tormak is right, once you get a bad reputation it never goes away (trust me, I know. Budly does as well). Neutral deities such as the Salandrans are great for this because you can witness both the good and bad sides without resistance so you can make your mind up if you wish to join a faction or ride on solo.

2) Definately be an arse with your scheming plots, but think of others when your doing it. You want to benefit all parties who are involved, not just yourself and that will be the selling point when you put your idea towards the DMs. That includes accepting that losing is a possibility so don't apply your rage face when it happens.

3) The stigma that RP doesn't start until you're a level 28 - 30 character isn't true. However, I've been in enough PvP, PvM and DM plots involving killing spawn after spawn to know that it surely helps. But, the main point of this point is that you don't have to be level 28 - 30 for RP to start.

Madrik has a huge story going. Won 2009's Best Story (if that means anything to anyone - not, most like) but it just takes time. I subtly include people into Madrik's story and they respond. Many people know it just through RP.

Think of something. See it through.
