Please please please use common sense when selling things to merchants, particularly job system items. Aside from in Tarkuul, I'm pretty sure no merchant is going to buy mummified corpses from you, so don't sell stuff like that to the merchants. I've seen that three different times now in Cordor.

DMs say what is accepted and isn't, not you.

And as for mummified corpses, think of what Hil'rash is.

Hilrash is an upstanding human merchant of the Commonwealth and does not traffic on bodies and corpses. No merchant in Cordor does save 1.

He is right.

Then why is there no information on this? I've never had a single DM before tell me not to.

Because it's common fucking sense. Why are you selling mummified corpses to a guy in public?

Oh, I understand the point - use sense when selling to merchants. The only thing is different people have different opinions as to what makes sense, and unless the DMs say what is true, how are people supposed to know?

Well, good for you I just told you in this topic you should not be selling dead bodies, in public, in Cordor. Now you can stop, both selling bodies and arguing senselessly. I shouldn't HAVE to tell you not to do thjis, much like I shouldn't need to tell you that murder Is A Bad Thing. Common Sense.

The DM's say what is and isn't true in the end:

This said. there should be SOME MEASURE of Common sense. An Evil arcane trinket of some sort might slip under Hil'rash's radar.

Mummified body? not so much

To be completely honest, I thought Hil'rash was a necromancer and would trade the bodies, so yes you did have to tell me that.

TormakSaber wrote:

Murder is a bad thing? It's what adventurers DO! We go out every single day, hunt down monsters and MURDER them. I accept what you say, that these people to not transit bodies, as true. What I do not accept is that it should be perfectly apparent to anybody and everybody. DMs decide what people can and can't sell, since Common Sense is different for every individual.

I think we're meant to forget about the Axis Shop, just like we have to pretend that Nes'ek was never really on Amia.

No, it used to be Axis. But now it is the Cordorian Merchants Guild. Hilrash has always been human. I'm not sure what the issue is here. It is common sense.

I agree with OP and will definitely start thinking more about what I will and will not sell to NPCs.

Oh right. For some reason (not sure where it came from) I always imagined Hil'rash to have no real face under the helmet. A skull of sorts, like a lich perhaps. Of course, until the Market Hall came into existence.

Not that I'm in any way bothered by this.

Actually its common sense for our day and age in RL but not in the setting your speaking about now. A mummified corpse would be a boon for any merchant, a advertising play even for them, make up a story of who or what the mummy is and cash in on all the people coming to see it. I am sorry but saying use common sense is only correct if you try and use real life sense instead of a fantasy games sense.

Even still Godo, DM's have said to the effect he wouldn't really accept them, thus..

And in the past, a mummified corpse wouldn't likely be something people'd wanna go around and sell..

Everyone should think about how and what they sell or buy to and from NPC's.

I always find it funny when I see corpses with the priestess of Waukeen or with Jayek -- who is a Paladin of Yondalla by the way. Think about what you're doing. When you buy or sell from a merchant NPC, you don't suddenly go into OOC mode, it's all IC. Think.

Sorry Tormak, you are incorrect in saying its common sense. It’s a fantasy game where actual common sense on allot of issues goes out the window.

There are limits even to fantasy. Some common notables still exist, such as gravity, even in a highly magical setting. Opinions can be considered mediæval blended in with modern concepts.

And at the end of the day, if a DM says it is common sense in a setting, then it overrules the opinion of the player.

News flash, its a fantasy game modeled after a roughly medieval setting that includes dragons and magic. More common sense from the real world still applies than you are willing to think. Not to mention regardless of what YOU may think, and what I may think, Tormak is the staff member here so whether you agree with him or not his ruling stands.

And to Yurell telling me not to dictate the rules, I did say please, and this was a request. I was in no way shape or form trying to order people to do what I felt was right, I was just irritated and asking people to exercise a little common sense.

You said to use common sense. What is common sense in this case? Common sense shows that mummies in Egypt were often used for as shows, being unwrapped for tourists and as fuel for trains. Common sense can mean any number of things.

Common sense is whatever the DMs dictate - in this case, the DMs have decided not to allow selling mummies in Cordor. I would, however, like to ask who the one exception is, so I don't sell any to the wrong person.

The merchants can't limit what kind of item they buy mechanics wise, unless they refuse to buy type X.

They don't care if it's evil or not mechanics wise.

And just because you could sell evil necromantic items to the Kelemvor temple's food guy, didn't mean you should do it ICly.

Just because you can sell stuff that should be sold in Tarkuul, to Hilrash.. doesn't mean you should do it ICly.

And if you sell something to somewhere it shouldn't belong, as it's not socially accepted.. I'd expect either a DM or a player to react to it, and get whoever sold it in a crap load of trouble. It'd be fun, and whoever it was would learn to be more discreet with such items.

I wish Cordor still did those crackdowns where they search people and make note of stuff that can be counterproductive to Cordor's citizens or guards. They were fun, and weeded out people strutting about with 20 corpses or bags of explosives or whatever.

Common sense in this context would mean "Do what the people that live there would do" I imagine.. The people of Cordor dislikes Adventurers strongly.. you think they'd pay gold and want to buy some sort of dead corpse from one of them? If they wanted to see dead corpses, they'd go down to the sewers with a guide. (ooooh RP idea)

That's a flawed argument. Amia is not Egypt. Not that you can just run around in Egypt and sell corpses like it was a hat anyway. Corpses aren't sold at the flick of a wrist, there's a process that you go through.

You don't take a mummy or a corpse to your local jewelry salesman, gun shop or pawn shop and sell it, right? There are regulations on the trafficking of body parts in the modern world.

In old times, you could damn well expect to be stopped by guards in a city for trying to sell corpses. Not to mention, I doubt most highly reputable merchants of the time would risk their reputation by trafficking corpses.

NPC's are pretty much the equivalent of creme de la creme merchants on Amia. Sell your corpses in Tarkuul. Or how about actually doing things the way the job systems intends? Whats the point in selling it to a merchant who'll only give you 1 gp anyway?

Wow...Its at times like this i appreciate just what it takes to be DM when you have to deal with *conflicts like this*. I read the arguments for selling (which basically revolved around some rather warped idea of common sense) and the arguments against which were much more fleshed out.

In conclusion, I'd have the agree with the OP and Guns. Just because the game mechanically lets you do something, doesn't mean you should. Remember...that with great insight there must also come great responsibility :D

Corpses aside, why wouldn't the priestess of Waukeen buy artifacts even if they are evil? I mean it IS Waukeen.

And on another matter as well, if it's RP were talking about (not that I'm disagreeing with OP on his point) but shouldn't we also consider that the seller may not know what he's selling? PCs without lore would not be able to ID some things and would require the aid of a merchant or someone in the know how to do so. In the case of the merchant perhaps that merchant offers to take the item off the PC's hands to dispose of it or some such.

Point is if your talking RP there's just as many reasons you can come up with as to why a merchant would buy something compared to why they would not. That in turn makes this whole argument rather moot, yes common sense would suggest that you not sell corpses to someone unless they have a reason to buy them, but RP also suggest that you could come up with a reason why they would.

Eg. my character comes across the corpse of someone, he takes it to the temple's priestess, she thanks him for bringing it to her attention and says that she will investigate the corpse's identity and notify any next of kin. She also gives him some coin as thanks for the deed.
DMs aern't always around or available to RP that sort of thing with you, so if you ask me selling the corpse helps simplify things, plus corpses are pretty heavy to begin with yes? carrying them around would be a burden on someone more then anything I'd imagine.
So in closing, my opinion is that if your character can RP a decent reason for doing something, even if it does appear unreasonable at first glance, then it's all good.

I carry a corpse around allot on one of my characters, he's an undertaker. Sides the guards would likely ask you to take it to the temple after some questions anyway, since that's where healing/restoration/raises/ect. would take place, or to just leave it at the guard house and give you a reward (is there a guard merchant?). Again it's pretty much implied RP since there's not always a DM around to do it.

As I said, can pretty much find a reason for anything RP wise, for or against, only real question is, is it good and is it believable.

well in medieval times a popular remedy against all kind of things was a product called mummie. For the poor just your regular dried corpse bits, but the wealthy actually could afford real mummie. It was ground up and eaten in small quantities.

Why would people charge for folk remedies when they can get free and complete healing at their local temple.

It's far more cool to RP some complicated remedies and healing rituals, than it is to dip your head into a pool of water and have it all magically removed. Might even get you some XP or DCs as reward!

A more interesting point: Waukeen I could see charging for remedies (albeit not excessive amounts unlesss t'was truly needed, and knowing them the charge is integrated into the ritual somehow: Not a slight against Waukeen just a comment based on some nifty RP with Tristana) , but Lathander? The basic services I could see them extending freely. (Although also mind, they are probably not as common in Cordor, thus not as availible)

Mechanically speaking, NPCs do nothing without DM intervention.

Roleplaywise, you are not supposed to ignore the guards when you roleplay. Why would you ignore the merchants as well?

Because they do not trust the temple and their religion or perhaps they trust their folk remedies even more?

My points before was not in that it should be allowed but rather do not suggest its against common sense thus degrading those who have sold such a item. All that was needed is to say that the DMs decided it is not something to be done in such a setting like Cordor. There was no need to try and degrade others by suggesting they had no common sense.

I'm going to get myself in trouble by agreeing with Yurell.

Hil'rash is a mage and mages use all sorts of weird things in their spells. No reason why he wouldnt stock things like mummy dust or mandrake root or (way back under the counter) the hand of a hanged man.

For all their posturing, adventurers are (mostly) just looters and killers. Prior to the mid 20th century or thereabouts, looting Egyptian artifacts from tombs and selling them to collectors or museums was SOP. This continues around the world even today (eg. Central America).

With Amians accepting the wholesale slaughter of practically anything that moves, sacrifices to evil deities and mass murders just outside the city, I dont see the occasional merchant balking at purchasing the odd dead body.

Still, Tormak hath spoken, and the message seems to be that one should ICly consider what NPCs would or would not purchase when dealing with them.

That's all well and good, except it was already stated that you shouldn't be selling corpses to NPCs. If you reeeeally want to because it's a part of your RP or some plot, grab a DM. Without DM's around, just don't do it.

While the black market existed and still exists, you don't just go to a prominent "goodly" city, to one of thee top selling merchants around and sell corpses. That's just silly. Is it possible? Anything is, sure. Is it likely? I would go with no.

I wouldn't say Amians accept slaughter, sacrifices to evil gods and mass murders. Not generally, anyway. Adventurers have their own ideas on the subjects and commoners have theirs. In a world that's mostly neutral and good, I would imagine it's more a sense of helplessness and submission. These things are the reality of the situation they live in. It's not that they agree or accept it, it's that they can't do much about it.

A bit out of context: "common sense" is subjective, I had none of this Amia common sense when I first started out. It came with experience and guidance.

A bit out of context: "common sense" is subjective, I had none of this Amia common sense when I first started out. It came with experience and guidance.

My argument exactly. 'Use Common Sense' isn't so strong a statement. 'Don't sell corpses to NPCs in Cordor' is a clear instruction that can be obeyed.

How about, do what the DM says.

We aren't contesting that, Dwagin - DM says don't sell corpses in Cordor then you bloody well don't sell corpses in Cordor. What I'm disagreeing with is being insulted for not using Common Sense despite having done so and arisen at a different conclusion. Common Sense is subjective, not objective. An order to not sell corpses in Cordor is objective - it's the same for every observer without room for interpretation.

It all boils down to if you're not fine with merchants buying everything and anything create firmer rules as to what they can and can't buy - don't just say 'use common sense' and then be upset when someone else's common sense is different to your own.

They use to hang/chop heads off/ dunk in rivers with rocks around their ankles, people dealing with bodies in any other way other than burying/burning them in the middle ages.

Anatomy was dangerous and taboo, trafficing in corpses was a capital offense. I assume that the general ideas similar to those are also carried forth by the normally 'decent common folk'. How screwed up do you really think someone has to be to be selling BODIES. Much less buying them.

There's a huge difference between the Tales from the Crypt old Asian guy in some dusty allyway selling a monkey's paw, and Hil'rash, a predominate merchant on the isle with a completely upfront, open and popular shop trading in questionable goods.

A merchant, wether PC or NPC has one thing that goes for them: Their reputation.

In the immortal words of Warren Buffet: "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to lose it."

Need I do more than point to Toyot(d)a Corp at the moment?

You're tossing up that 'Hey my Logic pwns flag again'
Dwagin wins,
Yurrel gets a larger post count.

The world keeps spinning. Tormak has spake as the other DM has stated. I suggest a lock if DM approves or Dolphin does?

From here on out it will jsut degenerate into hairpulling and insults, Dont sell bodies, think... others might watch you do so, you get thrown out of cordor. IC consequences would be great, to hard to inforce.
