I have my first sorcerer PC, and I'm trying to understand how equippable items affect spell castings.

He found silken gloves that give +2 Cha. Each time he takes them off, his spell castings drop until he has none in the levels affected by the ability bonus.

Is it supposed to be that way? It just doesn't make sense that his castings would drop below what he would normally have without any equipment bonuses.

It doesn't work that way with wizards, who simply gain/lose extra spell slots, but don't lose the spell slots they innately have.

More charisma gives more spells per day.

This counts for int/wis based casters aswell.

So removing the item will result in less spells

easy fix: dont take off and add +cha items over and over.

but on a serious level - its been this way for years, dunno if its fixable. sorcs have different spell system than wizards. wizzies memorize a spell, and when they lose INT they lose spell slots to memorize. Sorcs have a set number of spells they can cast, and removing decreases that number. So, if you can cast 10 spells, cast three, now you are down to 7. remove +2cha item, max spells you can cast is now 9, you already casted 3, now you are down to 6 left. It gets murky here, because the game counts it as if you have 6 left to cast, so remving and adding items decreases the number further.

OK. I figured it was some sort of glitch in NWN.
I'll just have to take it into account with Cha gear.

It's a glitch that happens with bards too.

it's always been that way since as far as I can remember, I don't think it'll ever be fixable, if it was...probably would have been fixed by now

It's not a glitch, it's simply how it works. If you wear something with magical properties, you get the benefits. If you take them off, poof, bye bye.

It is a glitch. Say you have six spells remaining per day. Your item gives you a seventh, you still have six remaining, because you haven't rested. You take the item off ... you now have five spells remaining. Why? Because it got rid of an active spell rather than an empty spot. If you keep putting on and taking off items you'd watch your spells per day drop to 0.

Then why do the spells go down to zero? It doesn't do that for casters with spell slots.

It is a glitch, an unfixable one with sorcs and bards.

Its not a glitch, someone pointed me out a link to the Bioware threads explaining why it wasn't a glitch.

I'll search it out and pass it on.

I found it sort of glitchy since, yes you should lose the first spell slot the first time you take them off until you rest.

You should -not- lose more and more and more because you change the modifier of 22 to 20. You should only lose that one spell slot and not get it back until rest.

But the way Bioware applies the spellslots, It's "New CHA Spellslot, oops its gone remove, new, oops gone remove another." Not actually giving them instant bonus slots based on actual CHA, Just... I want to call them temporary ones at rest based on CHA that will never come back until a rest.

Unlike Wizards that simply forget that spell once remembered there. But putting the INT back on instantly gives that slot back blank, taking INT off removes the blank slot.

(Sorry if all this sounds stupid and confusing, tired and it sounded smart to me.)

OK, I guess if it's an unfixable glitch, I'll just have to live with it. I noticed the same affect occurs when polymorphing, which removes all gear. Once the polymorph was canceled, bonus spells were lost.

Pity it works this way. But so be it.

Question: Why does it happen for the first time the character logs into the server, X bonus spells are lost as if some equipment was stripped once?

Personally I think this is a small loss compared to the natural caster unlimited spell bug abuse.
