It may just be me, as my characters seem to be the first ones targeted. Maybe someone out there hates me. Who knows or cares, right?

Still, I feel I must warn you guys, too. All right. Basically, there are new characters being made, here and there, that look like any ordinary low-leveled models.

They're not! They're hacked!

They'll start walking around aimlessly, not saying a thing, then begin to "dance" in front of you (Using the side-stepping motion).

All of this is to provoke the "victim" player in smart-mouthing the attacker back. The attacker won't say a thing. It will just continue to walk around aimlessly, bumping into the character again, then vanish behind a building. It will come back, as though shadowdancing, in front of the victim and do an unarmed strike of three-hundred points of damage.

Like I said, it's happened to me three times, already. This last one, today at Wiltun, killed me in two hits. The finishing hit on me, he got past Greater Sanctuary. The guards killed him, naturally, yet he was able to get back up and "shadowdance" away, again. Other players portalled in, role-played seeing my character dead, and were also attacked by a surprise Hellball. So, that tells you something about being hacked....

That is all I have to say. So, watch out, people, for newly-made, strange-looking characters acting rather goofy and whatnot. They've even got it where you're not allowed to respawn if slain by them.

Hacked characters have always been a problem, though Disco tries his best to block such things. If you see someone you think is hacked, just tell a DM and ask them to check. Hacking earns you a quick ban.

And it was quick, once someone told me.

Did you get the name of the player by any chance or did you miss that part while you were posting up this thread?

I actually met a person that did this kind of stuff at a party once. He was 18 and was boasting about how he made a cool virus. Punched him in the guts. I get so many damned virus problems on my laptop. Felt great, right in the guts. Little wanker had it coming.

I don't generally support violence, but virus creators/spreaders should have their fingers broken. Slowly.

This actually sounds like it'd be hilarious the first time it happened.

I remember when one of those was in Wiltun. He wasn't very happy to find out my Drow could crit for over 140 and did so three times in a row.

Good fun.

it would be a shame if one of the hackers got blocked in by god mode alters and people and flooded him with PMs of LOL.

Hackers are the good guys who point out flaws in programs or security, crackers are the one with malicious intent, also known as Black hat hackers.

However this asshatery doesn't deservers a hat at all, leave them be hatless, its the greatest punishment of hackerdom. *sagenods*

Also, in wiltun is that only possible because its a pvp zone?
So, Cordor would be safe. Right?

Heh, I remember the ones that got in before the split. One of them was trying to bribe me with a weapon so I wouldn't say nothing, it must of had 50+ properties on, though they were all set as Temp properties, that is probably how they got them in with no problems.

As for killing these ones, you'd of had a hard time, DM speed and probably items that make them invulnerable or such. Wouldn't be surprised if they had come from that Local vault server, the gamers table, or one similar.

They got banned the same day though, after screenies were sent in.

Yeah, unless they had a way of being recognised as NPCs, then they wouldn't be able to touch any other PC.

You know, a very popular method of torture in the early-mid 1900s in japan was shoving bamboo under the persons nails. World War II soldiers were told to beware of this, because it was extremely painful.

We can follow up on these things even if the player isn't online. If you believe you've found a PC who uses hacks, report the login or even the character name to any DM.

And let's not forget about so-called subtle hacking, or hacked characters with stats adjusted just a little bit, in attempt to fly under the radar of most people (sheet-checking DMs included).

Don't try it, you'll be busted and excuses won't save you then.

I always feel a little bit bad about the subtle ones. Like the guy I busted whose only crime was adding +1 charisma to his cleric, and changed it so his character started out with a katana instead of a small mace.

But it's hacking, so he's teh permabanned.

Im glad I have no computer knowledge... some people are just silly.

I certainly don't feel sorry for anyone who's willing to go and break the rules like that, knowing full well what the consequences are and that they're there for balance.
As for starting stuff, you get a few hundred gold of the delivery quest, you can buy whatever you want.

Well, it's more of a "I can't believe you bothered hacking one point of charisma".

Ya! 1 point... you know that makes all the difference tormak!

1 point is the borderline between smart enough to be subtle and almost smart enough to not hack the game.
At any rate, I'm glad that the no-tolerance approach is taken with this.

Clearly the motivation there was (as with most cheats, really) was the 'buzz' of doing something they shouldn't, and 'getting away with it'.

I guess he thought 1 point wouldn't be noticed.......or maybe thought 'these gullible idiots wont punish me harshly for just ONE POINT'

I got no sympathy at all....

Or maybe he just did it because he could? :shock:

I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to Hacking, most I know is how to help prevent people Hacking into my computer which is enough for me. Don't see why people would go through the extra trouble/work just to hack into a game, myself.

I see it like you play a game, and say complete it, you decide to play again with an invulnerability cheat, it just makes it soo boring, what's the point in playing a game where there's a chance you can die, but you use a cheat so you don't? It just takes away the whole point of the challenge in the game away.

Well, some people (myself included) suck with the technical bits of a game, but are interested in the story and entertainment a game has to offer. I can't remember a single-player where I didn't use cheat codes, simply because I get stuck after the first scene and keep dying. I buy the games for entertainment, not to compete with a stupid computer to the point of frustration.

That's obviously not the case with a multi-player, that lacks an advancing, single storyline and where you're not dependent on your own (lousy) coordination skills but can play multiple roles in combat situations instead.

Hacking in games like Amia is all about competition and beating others, is my guess. There's no point in doing it, otherwise. I guess the people who do it lack confidence in their own skills and have to boost their little egos by cheating, so they can beat everyone else with their 1337ness. Which they couldn't, otherwise.

I'll put it in a way I see it from my perspective.

When you play a truely horrendous game such as Fallout 3 and really think the game is utterly disgusting, you feel that after wasting several hours of your life learning how to play the game you might as well finish it so you know what happens at the end and brag to your mates you finished it first.

Bang goes in the cheats and then you finally get to the end where you find out you die because your radiation immune mutant friend doesn't want to do it for you. When you look at the ending, you'll say "well gosh that sucked. Good thing I didn't waste those extra 10 hours doing it legitimately. I want my money back."

That's a fair point, from both.

But, I myself wouldn't find it fun if my characters on Amia suddenly became indestructable, or super strong is all, for me that takes all the fun of your character earning the power.

That's likely because I don't care too much for OOC competition between me and other PC's, nor do I for completing a game before everyone else because I usually like finding all the little side things in games and getting 100% completion, but obviously not everyone sees it the way I do as proven above.

It I thought I could get away with it. I suppose I would totally get me epic characters munny so that I could actually AFFORD some of the stuff that people seem to be able to auction, a dozen at a time.

In the end, what it comes down to is what is expected of a person (or a player) in a social environment (which an online game is, essentially). You can mess around all you like in a single-player game, just like you can do pretty much what you want in the comfort of your own home. The moment it starts affecting others, the rules change.

I had a nightmare about this! :shock:

I actually have encountered hacked characters before on another server. I can't remember where. Oh. They think they are so invulnerable sometimes, and then they fall to a dev crit. Hehe.
