Just looking through some dead subraces, and fell upon the Mulan. I ran into a few questions and problems with Mulan lore, and I'm hoping to clear some stuff up with this thread. First, I was attracted to this subrace because of the deity Nephthys, who's clergy are all female, favored weapon whip, and the deity herself animates undead creatures. All so hawt to me.

Here's some questions about Mulan culture I have:

Are their marriages polygamous or monogamous, or unspecified?

(I am asking this because if I play a female, I want her to be one of many wives of a noble male from some rich family. Why? don't ask why, just go with it.)

I know that Nephthys openly opposes the red wizards of Thay.... But does anyone know why? I can't figure out why they would oppose them... other than the fact that the red wizards of Thay are EBIL!

(Or should I just not ask why and go with it?)

Here's a problem I found:

Forgotten Realms wiki says mulan do not wear expensive clothes so they don't outshine their gods, but it also says Nephthys priestesses wear the most expensive equipment they can afford when going to battle. HALP!

Mulan are not a dead subrace? Also, they are based off ancient Egyptian culture, so might want to check on that for marriage stuff.

As for the expensive part, I'm sure that it more means expensive-looking rather than expensive-cost. Different things.

Also viewtopic.php?f=2&t=66304 and viewforum.php?f=148 ;p

Well, yes, but I didn't want to base my character concept on an inaccurate stereotype of an ancient culture. (For instance, the premier Egyptian historian says ancient Egypt had no slaves.)

I couldn't find the answers to my questions there. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough?

The book you want is called Old Empires. It's a second edition sourcebook but the lore itself is fine. Faiths and Pantheons has further information on the Mulhorandi pantheon. The wiki is a horrible place to look for any information. Nephthys would not tolerate traditional necromancers, nor would any of the Mulhorandi deities (Set notwithstanding) except in super narrow, niche circumstances. The Mulhorandi Empire, and its Pantheon, has been at war with Thay for centuries. If you want a Mulan Necromancer, look towards the Red Wizards. You're pretty far off the mark here.

There is a General Questions thread to avoid needless spamming of the General Discussion forum.

Marriage among the Mulan was a pretty equal situation, the husband gave his wife status, she brought him more wealth, both polygamy and monogamy were practiced, either would happen just as often as the other in wealthy or comfortably well off households.

Slavery among the more accurately termed Mulhorandi, was a thing of honor, The Gods owned the slaves and they were cared for and rights upheld by the temples, unjust treatment of the slaves entrusted to your care would carry with it hefty fines and even ostracism. If a slave committed a serious offense when under your care you took that to the temple to be seen to.

Frequently poor men or women or even the Freemen would "sell" themselves into slavery to pay off heavy debts so as not to make them into a burden for their families, since Mulhorandi slaves could accumulate wealth, generally they'd pay off their debt first and what little was left went to help the family. Slaves could eventually buy their freedom. But going from slave to freemen was not necessarily a desired thing, Slaves were cared for, all their food, housing, education and medical needs were taken care of by the temples, Freemen had no such privileges, they had to work to provide their own and often gold came up short.

Mulhorandi also do not have nobles as like would be found in Cormyr, all Priest/ess were nobles, Primogeniture was strictly practiced, the eldest son got 2/3rds, the second oldest got 1/3, the rest were reduced to freemen and women, with the right dowry a daughter could help elevate the family's status among the nobles, but it was considered far too expensive to do that more than once.

Hope this helped a bit, its a portion of the lore a number of us spent a lot of time researching while the Djedet events were going, and we freed Anubis so he could turn and fight Set for his freedom. Ma'at chose a number of highly honorable people from the community there, a significant portion of the Chosen of Ma'at returned, but a few that will be remembered did not, one other has been returned, but this is her story to tell.

Good luck in finding more information....

Thanks! That helps me a lot.

NinjaClerinet is right about the undead thing. Even though he didn't describe the super narrow, niche circumstance that would be appropriate for the creation of undead, I am starting to begin to imagine it: as part of the magical wards used to protect the tomb of a wealthy noble, a faithful bodyguard, that died in service, is animated as a mummy to guard the tomb for eternity. I would also imagine that that particular "warding" technique was rarely used, so yeah, a Nephtys priestess that goes adventuring with an army of undead almost certainly does not happen... unless they are looking for a particular object or objects that was stolen from a tomb that the mummy was guarding? ... hrm... but then that would leave anything left in the tomb unguarded... so... yeah, a little far fetched.

For necromancy in Thay the most skilled ones are the Red Wizards who specialize in it. That being said even clerics employ their kind and it is a known fact Thay has the largest standing undead army.
