While I've been playing Abd-al-Hakim for a while now, he was only created to explore Amia and eventually get to level thirty, which I never managed to do when I played between 2005 and 2007. But now I want to make a character who is better suited for role-playing and I find myself out of ideas.

So, I'm hoping that if my fellow players could tell me what process they go through when creating a new character, I can apply some of those ideas and get the creative juices flowing again.

I do know that I want to play a Halfling, because Bendir Dale always seems to have some good role-play going on when I walk by. In terms of classes, I'd rather play some sort of caster because I've been doing the Fighter thing for a while now.

Cheers,
Psalm

Halflings are great!

Personality is important. It's probably easier to connect when your character has similar traits to you as a person.
Just a quick list that has helped me as well as what I've seen from others which makes a good character:
-Hobbies
-General mood and how your character is represented on the outside + Inside. It could be speech and -appearance.
-Faith and how religious + How does deity influence your character as a whole
-Quick summary of background story, you might find it easier to go with the flow after that. Or you could plan a whole big background.
-Goals
-Why has your character came to the island? Or if your character has lived in the Dale, why has your character decided to involve him/herself outside the walls.
-Likes and dislikes.
-Pros and cons: good and bad habits, fears, weaknesses... so on.
-Dilemma and secrets.
-Many more I might have missed.

Going 'too by the book' might restrict you from having fun, being flexible helps.
For class, anything that suits you really and your character. Maybe your character likes to help people out so you're an cleric... or something! I dunno, whatever you feel is best. :)

Just to urge the importance of planning before IG, you don't want a shortlived character.

Make the character, think of a good name, and flesh the rest of it out in game.

First off this thread is pretty damn amazing for anything Hin-related, I always recommend people who play or even just want to learn about Hin in general to read it.

On top of Elyon's really good list of questions, I'll also add that it also depends on which Hin you play.

To make the Subrace list easier on the eyes, there's:

Standard Hin

Lightfoot Halfling
Strongheart Halfling
Ghostwise Halfling

"Ancestoral" Hin

Aasimar Halfling
Air Genasi Halfling
Earth Genasi Halfling
Fire Genasi Halfling
Tiefling Halfling
Water Genasi Halfling

Cross-bred Hin

Elfling.

Most Hin, especially Lightfoot, make for some amazing Sorcerers and Wizards!

Again, read the thread I linked! It's amazing and full of Lore.

Not a really constructive post I'll put up but bendir dale and it's players ALWAYS keep it real!

So yeah just saying +1 to elyons and Kaminas post being honest!

My process is:

What race do I really enjoy and like playing the most? Too often people pick a race -purely- for their attribute bonuses and have no idea what the actual culture is like except for a few snippets and those they stick too stubbornly not realizing it's a generalization.

Then you decide what kind of build, what you want the characters strengths and weaknesses etc. Then I write a somewhat in-depth backstory after researching a specific area (For instance, Rosie is from Shoun in Luiren) and writing a story that makes IC sense to bring my character -to-amia.

Then I just give them a personality and go from there!

The fact that I start with the first sentence being "What race do I really enjoy playing" is why I have 3 halflings >.>

You also sometimes can start with a class you like playing too or you want the "knight in shimmering armour" and all that good stuff.

If you're really interested in playing a halfling, read the thread that was posted above me a couple posts and feel free to ask ANY questions of us halfling players. We're the friendliest bunch on the whole server!

Edit: That thread made me fall in love with halflings when I read it and attributes to my character list being full of halflings and me playing through the single-player campaign as a halfling! Just saying!

Go for halfling, and you will have fun! It's a great way to get back into the server, and hopefully you will like the character enough to continue on. Elyon and Kamina's posts are spot on, and very informative. Check out the Bendir Dale forum for some insight into the community, as well.

Thanks, guys! Especially Kamina for linking that thread, good stuff. As well as Elyon, using that list of questions now.

I've got some ideas going with this new character now, just need to spend some time developing the concepts.

Cheers,
Psalm

I don't want to change the course of your thread, but if you're looking for something more interesting to RP than you 'exploratory' character it may behoove you sometime in the future to develop it in new ways. No character, given thought and care, is poorly suited for roleplaying.

That said, I've always wanted a Hin but just can't bring myself to do it.

Mercedes is wrong, if you run a hin, it won't have hooves ...unless you request it. :P

When I make a character, I ask myself what type of character do I want to play. Once I said I want a quick, flighty, little guy that probably talks too much but is always in good spirits no matter what comes his way, and loves to poke fun at those that take life too seriously. In this case, I made a halfling shadow dancer that followed the tenets of Brandobaris. Once I said I want a stoic, grim faced veteran warrior that isn't afraid of a fight but might be reluctant to start one. In this case, I made an earth genasi weapon master.

I describe the character I want to play, then I pick a race that might match the desired personality, then I make a build, then a brief backstory that might explain why the character is the way he/she is with some goals, fears, insecurities, quirks etc etc. This will get more details as you "discover" the character's personality more fully in game. Then just stay true to your character.

I very much like building characters and coming up with back stories so I have A LOT of characters...

Halflings have always, to me, come off as the stereotype jester. While most aren't created to be - They eventually become. :|

Now I am not the person that have most alts or have ever made many characters (just 2 above 20), but what differentiated Earalenia (my current character) with my older and now retired character, is that I made Earalenia with the intent of making her as a completely different person than me (though she has matured along with me and become more in line with how I am during my time as playing her). It's also important to set goals for your character that aren't unlikely, but reaching them will be a long road and hard to achieve.
