hey all, playing about with the MDL files, can anyone one point me to a program that works to decode the MDL files into something usable by rhino, or autocad.

I have NWNveiwer, and it seems to work fine, but the NwnMdlComp to convert Mdl's into ASCII files doesn't seem to run on this comp with Win7.. just loads then crashes? any help would be awesome, as I would like to make some custom weapon files, and can use the 3d programs if I can get a basic object to play with for scale and orientation.

Cheers

Pretty sure 3ds can do .mdls.

Thanks for the reply, I have found a working solution so far using Gmax, with NWmax plugin, my first overide Mdl file works in the toolset but I just need to reduce the polygon count.. (takes forever to load in), sort out a texture and color and adjust the positioning.. but very exciting.

I don't think many people here know much about modelling, myself included.

I dabble in modeling and I've tried to figure out how to import models into NWN as well. My setup of 3ds max didn't work, haven't tried Gmax though. My best advice would probably just be to nose around with NWN explorer to see how things work. I know there are a few tutorials on the vault as well. Oh, and it may be worth checking out the guide to custom content on the vault as well (I think it's just called Custom Content v3).

Ha, yes looking at that tutorial was what got me the into this whole mess in the first place, but it is essential.

NWmax and the cryptic tutorial are what I needed, and it has a version that works with 3ds max as well, Gmax just is a much much older free version I think?

Now I just need the vacuum cleaner to suck up all this hair I have torn out...

I highly suggest you make use of the Lexicon. It helps, particularly with things like recommended polycount, texture layers, naming etc. Its very very useful.

I don't have any experience in the actual modelling part, just some very basic editing and animation for NWN, but the file side of it I can help with, as well as ascii editing, ascii to binary conversion, How to save the file with GMax etc etc, Texture creation and application.

NWMax sadly lacks a lot of useful information. I've nutted out Gmax in terms of most of the stuff that doesn't require actual skill in 3D modeling and animation, so I can probably help there.
