Reverring the Spider Queen
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This set of documents can be found in the library of Ultrinnan, though parts of it might be discovered in the Underport or Zanshibon, as well. It seems to detail various rituals to be performed in reverence to Lloth, such as the following:

The Wicked Devouring

Hear and take heed, sisters;
The words of the Queen of the Demonweb Pits!

“From My will you were made, My wrath is your spark
And my hunger – it is for you to satisfy”

Her will be done. Each year, during Flamerule, the ceremony of Wicked Devouring is to be organized. Lloth is the Goddess of malice, and we celebrate her neverending hunger and hatred for all that is weak during the Devouring.

Her thirst for blood and hunger for flesh is without boundaries, as is Her power. This is why each House is to attend, bringing all Her people into Her temple. From every noble family, a priestess is chosen to take part in calling rituals. The lowliest of houses will provide a dozen sacrifices, the second at the bottom will provide two dozens, and higher houses provide the amount that is appropriate for their status, following this equation.

Once the houses have brought their sacrifices into the temple, the drow are to remove any and all clothing. We show our respect to the Queen who has made our figures perfect and we are not ashamed to show ourselves unclad before Her. That is right and proper.

Having undressed, the priestesses will light the braziers in the temple and begin the summoning rituals. Each of them will call forth a servant of the Goddess from the realms of chaos. Beware, those of weak minds! Those who have seen Her true form are terrible to behold, and many a yath’abban has broken before one such fiend.
Having called and convinced the demons to stay, the priestesses make the Offering – Each house will gather their sarcifices and give them to the demons.. These abyssal servants then devour the offerings’ flesh and thus feed the Goddess.

The drow present sing praise to the Queen of Unending Hunger. The priestesses chosen to perform the ceremony will use the remaining blood to paint upon themselves the mark of the Goddess and bless the whole congregation. In some cities, it is traditional for the Yath to mate with males at the end of the ceremony. This I witnessed in Menzoberranzan.

Pray that you have satisfied Her hunger with your offering! She is merciless in Her wrath, and will not accept offerings too small or too large. Know how many you must give, and She will be pleased. If She so pleases.

Lloth tlu malla!

Practical notes for the verger:

1. There must be eight braziers set around the chapel. Their correct positions are vital. Refer to the “Manual of ritual gates”, by Waerva of Cheth Rhinn, for detailed instructions.

2. If the inceses and oils used are originally from the surface, they must have gone through a ritual of cleansing: A fortnight of exposure to Faerzress and the appropriate spells cast by one of the Yath.

3. The offering used to call the outsiders must consist of 1/8 black diamonds, 1/5 obsidian pearls and any high-quality gems of choosing. Quartz crystals must not be used, unless the summoner is particularily fond of meeting an angry myrlochar.

4. To light the braziers, use coal. If you intend to use oil, do not put the gems into the braziers long in advance. They will be spoilt by days of exposure to the liquid.

5. Always use Darkfire when igniting the braziers’ contents. Profane means are not a proper way to worship the Dark Mother.

6. A clarification to the correct amount of sarcifices: If there are five houses in a city, the First House will provide the ceremony with five dozen sacrifices. If there are twelve houses, the First will offer twelve dozen sacrifices. House rank is to be reversed and multiplied with a dozen.
