Take heed, Scholars of the Arts and Sciences, Wayward Academics with Accreditations and Writers of Non-Fiction:

The Amian Herald is pleased to announce the heretofore unprecedented publication of a special Traveler's Guide edition detailing one of the Amian island's most notable locales: the Holy City of Kohlingen. A destination for pilgrims as far away as the distant mainland, Kohlingen has long since left its footnote in our local almanac. It had been my wish to begin this special edition series with a Traveler's Guide for the Commonwealth of Cordor, but in light of the city's recent history of social and political upheaval and its even more recent tragedies, I feared that a Guide detailing the city of Cordor would risk reading as an exposé or, worse, an obituary.

Thanks in no small part to input from the Roadwarden Society, much of this special edition has already been set to plate. However, it has occurred to me that with the dearth of serious academic journals on Amia, this Traveler's Guide may simultaneously boost its content and credibility by seeking contributions from the scholarly community.

The Amian Herald is seeking articles of interest covering a broad range of topics related to Kohlingen and the environment near Kohlingen, such as:

    -Histories
    -Heraldries
    -Local Flora and/or Fauna
    - Local religions and holidays
    - City Management
    - Social Stratas of the Holy City
    - Architecture
    - Business Community
    - Trade Laws/Practices
    - Articles of Arcane Science relevant to Kohlingen
    - Culinary Traditions
    - Fashion
    - Spoken, Written, and Plastic Arts
    - Military and Justice Systems
    - Philosophic Overviews
    - Taxations
    - Travel Tips
    - Tourism
    - etc.

Please do not send the Herald unsolicited articles. Write a convincing query letter instead stating your intended subject matter and the thesis of your article and deliver it to any member of the Roadwarden Society with a return address where the Herald may contact you for commission. We will select a handful of candidates from the query letters.

Final submissions shall be no more than 3000 words. Commission to be determined upon acceptance of the query letter. The Herald will accept previously published articles, provided they meet the criteria for the Guide and the editor's approval. Citations and relevant sources must be included. The Guide is scheduled for press in three tendays.

Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Mr. Herald
of the Amian Herald

If your character is interested in submitting a small article related to one of the topics above, write me a small "thesis statement" and a brief overview of your intended article, which is essentially what a "query letter" is, for those unfamiliar with the process. If you have already done something in the past that you have posted in the Library forum that you think would be a good addition, you can link me to that in the PM. That would be "previously published material" that may be acceptable. If I think the article idea sounds like a real winner I'll PM you back an approval and then you can scratch something up and I'll include it as a part of the ultimate release. Note that the best of the articles will actually try to tie a subject in directly to Kohlingen. If given the choice between an article about the history of the Red Knight and Tempus and an article about Red Knight influence in previous Kohlingen military campaigns, I will certainly go for the latter. An article about herbs is nice, but an article about herbs found around Kohlingen and what Kohlingers generally use those herbs for is what would be accepted.

Do not be frightened by the "citations and sources required" comment. You do not have to provide that as a player, but if you submit an article it is understood that serious research was actually done and the article has sources that can be checked and verified. Otherwise, the article would not be printed!

Length is not a big issue, and usually the more succinct, the better. That's why the max of 3000, but you can have some real winners that are between 1000-1500, honestly. Everybody writes with differing levels of interest and excitement.

No, you will not be judged on your grammar/spelling/command of the English language, so all of our ESL players are welcome to participate as well if you have the interest. You will notice the acceptance I use is based on THE IDEA in the query letter, not the actual article itself (which I will be editing for you and putting out there, so anyone who has reservations about your own command of the language need not fear because I fix it up for you.) I really wanted to stress this because there are a lot of players who have really great ideas about original lore-related stuff but they get anxiety over writing about it because they fear they are not a "good writer". You don't have to be a good writer, just pitch me a good idea, and if I accept it, then put in a little time to draft an article written by your PC and I'll edit it and include it.

I do want to try to have this all "published" by late July or so, but note that if you have a really good idea for an article but feel you need more time to put it into words because your life schedule is hectic, FEAR NOT! The Amian Herald's Special Edition can be "reprinted" at a later date (aka, edited on the forums) as a kind of second or third release that may contain more content...including your own article submission! I also wanted to stress this because, let's face it, we all have busy lives and I don't want anyone to feel pressured about anything. This is just a fun opportunity that you can take advantage of at your leisure.

Don't expect incredible commission, either, btw. The real reward is having your article published and displayed. :)

// I think this is a great initiative. Though will articles go trough some form of fact checking to ensure they don't conflict with existing lore or with each other?

The edition makes its way into print, with the promise that future reprintings of the Kohlingen travel guide may include original articles from local authors!
